Located in a tucked in strip mall in Apex, I wouldn't normally visit such a place but there weren't many options on Christmas Eve so here we were. There was a long wait but the staff was accommodating. We started out with chicken dumplings, which were pretty standard had huge servings tbh and had to save it for later. Fiancé went for the beef stuffed pies which were a little oily but comfort food at best - a lot like stuffed samosas for those who are familiar with Pakistani/Indian cuisine. On our quest for good Chinese food we stopped here because WHO DOESNT LOVE DUMPLINGS!?? Cute place with a modern look and quite clean. They have many dumplings on the menu and some are available on specific days but if you ask they may have some available on the off days. We ordered veggie dumplings, beef pies and egg rolls. The dumplings were pretty, green and white dough filled with a yummy veg filling. The beef pies were good on flavor but there just wasn't a lot of filling. The dough was crispy and had good flavor too. The egg rolls were a little on the cold side so they had no crunch and very little flavor. Our daughter ordered Hunan chicken and it was a nice serving size and great flavor. Lots of different veggies but too hot for me. I ordered the chicken with mixed veggies. Also a nice sized portion and a nice sauce. Can't wait to try this place again. read more

Really good Chinese- dumplings Are well made, wrapper not thick and cooked correctly, All the items we have eaten here- has been cooked well. Not to heavy on sauce and ingredients seem fresh every time. My only Recommend- order the salt & pepper anything: (they have several options) eat in only. It doesn't travel well. Don't get mad but I generally avoid Chinese food. In the past, it just seemed overcooked, greasy, and acidic. So, honestly I agreed to go to this place reluctantly but it's not a good practice to consistently eat the same things and avoid an entire genre of food! I agreed to go. The place was clean, that was my first impression. I servers were kind, friendly and prompt. I can't speak to authenticity since no one was a Chinese food expert on our party, but it was delicious. I had the veggie dumplings which were fried and on special - lovely. I asked the server If that would be enough food and he said no, I should get lomein. I got the chicken lo mein first while my dumplings were made - dumplings seem to take a while - I was warned that it takes about twenty minutes to make them and while I waited, a huge plate of lo mein came out! I stuffed my face and then stuffed it again with the dumplings, yes all of them. I would certainly recommend this place! I really enjoyed it and I'll be back. Note: While it doesn't affect me, my mom is gluten free and it was really difficult for her to find gluten free items on the menu. So, we went here just to give it a try and I admit I was hesitant. We splurged on a smorgasbord of 5 kinds of dumplings and some chicken pad thai I didn't eat. ...for dinner. The dumplings were all very good, I didn't see any shrimp on the menu which surprised me, but the lamb/carrot combo was delicious. I mean - it was excellent, with complex flavors of 5 spice really driving it home. The vegetable was also good, especially in between the other dumplings. I would say the chicken cabbage and pork cabbage were very good, but between the pork and leek and pork and cabbage, it's a toss - I expected more flavor difference. However to my shock later that night.. the chicken pad thai was... OUTSTANDING. THIS is what a pad thai is supposed to taste like, and it puts the poor quality of Sushi Iwa directly in its place: crap. (Sorry guys, but come on, Sushi Iwa pad thai chicken? their chicken tastes like boiled rubber and the noodles burned over kerosene compared to this). Mr Dumpling Pad Thai was rich, flavorful, and tender. It's the first time I've ever *liked* pad thai in Apex. This was a surprisingly tasty meal and I will be back for more. read more

I love this place. We get the pan seared spicy noodles every time (though I wish y'all didn't change the noodle, I preferred the fat noodle as opposed to this thick one). The shredded seared potatoes, get them, you will thank me later. Spicy of course. We also get another vegetable, cabbage or bok choy. We have gotten spicy but our new thing is garlic. Wow what a great combination! We are vegan and this is our go to. We have been with meat eaters and everything they have gotten off the menu had zero complaints. 4 stars because of the noodle thing for me, also when they are busy service is slow because they don't have a large wait staff. My wife and I were looking for a gun unique place to eat, something that is not the usual fare. We decided to try Mr. Dumpling and I am so glad we did. The staff was super friendly and offered some suggestions. We ordered hot and sour soup, spring rolls, the pork and cabbage dumplings, house fried rice and the house lomein. The dumpling order had 10 dumplings. When I bit into the dumpling it was an explosion of juicy flavor and deliciousness!!! Wow, top 3 dumplings I have ever eaten. Some really great options on the extensive menu here. My advice is go with a group and try as many as you can fit on the table, like we did. Overall, it's a ton of food for great prices if you're splitting the check. The food itself is unique in the area. There are a few other dim sum options, but Mr Dumpling has some great twists and flavors that other places don't have. The portions are huge, with our entire table taking home some leftovers. The wait staff is super-friendly and except for a slight language barrier at first, very helpful. There's a TV screen over the open-area prep kitchen that runs through pictures of a lot of the dishes (though some dish names are not in English, which would've been more helpful). Take a few minutes with the menu to look at the screen for clarity on dishes you might not be familiar with - there's a lot of them. Overall, a great place for a group of people to experiment with dim sum and other extensive options without trying to figure out the ordering experience of dim sum carts (Silk Road) or hot pots (Good Harvest) - Mr Dumpling is far more accessible for the average semi-adventurous eater. read more

The gimmick here is that you "get to watch dumplings being made" right in front of you. I found that option to be a bit cumbersome as it would require you to sit at a bar-like spot in the restaurant that is somewhat in the way of other tables and puts you in an awkward position to see something that is simply not that remarkable. That said, these guys have a solid menu and they deliver on that menu. They have a separate section in the menu for American Chinese food, but the real goods are found in the rest of the Taiwanese-infused offerings. This food is hyper-Sino in origin and is as authentic as you're going to get. The dumplings were fine, but the authentic Taiwanese/Chinese is something that is rare to find in the Triangle. I will certainly return as it's really the only decent Chinese restaurant in Apex. read more

I went to this new Chinese restaurant last night with my daughter. It was a 5 for food, 4.5 for service, 4 for atmosphere, so really good overall. $15 for a huge bowl of fish and pickled cabbage soup/stew - it was quite tasty (I have leftovers for 2 days). The extensive menu had several entries blacked out, which may be them refining their offerings based on demand, but I couldn't help but feel "denied". No pictures on the menu made ordering difficult for a guy who is used to buffet or counter order service at Americanized Chinese restaurants, and I was quite surprised at the enourmity of the huge bowl of soup - really better suited for 2-4 people in a family style meal, but I did not get that info from menu or server. Nonetheless, all was tasty and seemed like authentic cuisine, and I would definitely go back again. I am happy to have a real sit down, table service Chinese restaurant in Apex. read more

This is a good place. Just make sure you ask about the spice levels of spicy. The shredded potatoes (spicy) was excellent. The Mapo spicy tofu is pretty spicy but had great flavor. The one piece of improvement is service. They are pleasant but they potentially need some organization. The vegetarian dumplings are great. Unlike steamed dumplings, these are fried. This is a new restaurant in this area. They had a bumpy start when they first opened and had some change of staff which had improved things. Their food speaks for itself though. People who've left bad reviews went once and were irritated with the wait......this restaurant is not very big and you need to plan ahead. Reservations are highly recommended and necessary on weekends. If you go and choose not to utilize reservations, you only have yourself to blame. I highly recommend this restaurant and again, the food is amazing. I suggest beef chow fun (thick noodles, beef, onions) they also make these fried (pancakes?) crispy breaded things with meat and bean sprouts or other vegetables that are amazing. Their dumplings are hand made at the time they are ordered. Give them a try, with reservation, you will not be disappointed. Maybe try a weekday first time. read more

Service was terrible. 1. We ordered food about 10 mins after we arrived, which is reasonable. The appetizers came out a few minutes later, with no seasoning or dips, I mean this pancake has no salt!!! So I try to get the waiters attention, which takes 10 minutes, and his response was 'you want salt man?' He got us salt and some dip, which was enough for us. 2. main course comes out and after this we did not get anyone's attention for close to 1 hour!!! This restaurant was suggested to us by locals. From what we ordered our favorites were the, scallion pancakes, the pork and leak dumplings and the vegetable dumplings. The dumplings were so delicious that they were gone by the time we got home and the scallion pancakes came with a delicious sauce that also tastes good with your rice. We also ordered the Mapo Spicy Tofu, but we were not as impressed with them. Different dumplings are available depending on the day of the week. We were lucky enough to go on Saturday when they have both vegetarians and meat dumplings available. The host in the front is awesome and he gave candid suggestions on what we should order and not order. I would definitely suggest this place for those in the area. read more

We went on a Sunday and was told that veggie dumplings were out and only available dumplings were pork & cabbage due to the injury of the dumpling chef. So my girlfriend went with leek & egg stuffed pies, which did not taste good. The stuffing was not fresh and leaked through the side. The wood ear mushroom salad tasted great with pepper oil but was kind of pricy for a small plate. I enjoyed the crust of the crispy beef stuffed pies but the stuffing was bland. The pork & cabbage dumplings tasted quite good and definitely better than the frozen ones you could purchase at Asian grocery stores. The size of the dumplings was adequate, perfect for just one bite, and the stuffing was flavorful. I suppose we could have been happier if we were able to order veggie dumplings and assorted dumplings. Overall, I would say this is a 3-star experience. However, I was charged 90 cents more than the amount written down on the receipt thus I take away 1 star. Not that I care much about 90 cents but overcharging any amount is improper for any restaurants. read more

We'd been to Lee Garden several times but were never that impressed so we were pretty pleased when a friend said the new place was very good. My wife and I stopped in for lunch today. We stuck to the more authentic part of the menu. We had the pork & cabbage dumplings, a spicy beef dish and a spicy pork dish. The dumplings were very good and while pricy, they do give you a lot. The spicy beef dish was very flavorful but most of the meat was fat and cartilage. The spicy pork dish was fantastic. Nice heat and crunchy vegetables. I thought the food was really good but the prices were a bit high and the service a bit sparse. But we'll go back. It's a nice addition to the area. read more

Normally, I don't judge a restaurant by its name, but I admit we decided to give it a try due to its catchy name. Now, upon arrival, you will only recognize this as a new restaurant by the banner (over the original store name) that states Mr Dumpling, so you may be just as skeptical as I was. However, the restaurant is clean, albeit cozy with French upholstery over the seats. Luckily, there were already a few native speakers seated and eating - a good sign. We enjoyed our pork and leek dumplings very much, and I would come back for these. The cumin lamb dish we ordered was good - I welcomed their copious use of fresh peppers over the dried red peppers (both were present). However, I would say that it's not quite as dry toasted as what I've seen other restaurants do (so the lamb felt greasier and was less crispy) and there wasn't as much lamb either.
