I've lived in Denton for 7 years, and this used to be one of my favorite places to eat. However, I had a very bad experience about 3 years ago, and have only been back once since. I loved their Thom Kha, tofu curries, and spring rolls. Then, I was diagnosed with celiac disease, and at that point found this place to be very unaccomodating. I was told that none of their dishes could be made without soy sauce, and our waitress went to get her manager. She then pointed out a total of about 2 unappetizing looking menu items that were gluten free. I decided to go with a salad since I figured that would be "safe". When the order came out, there was a big pile of noodles on top covered in soy sauce, which it didn't mention anywhere on the menu. I asked my waitress what they could do, if I could have another one without the noodles since the menu was unclear. Who would assume a salad would come with noodles? The waitress brought the manager out again, and she practically yelled at me for ordering something that she didn't point out to me, and refused to make me something I could actually eat. She told me there was nothing she could do, since the new order would have to come out of the waitress's check. WHAT?!?! I had to pay for something I couldn't even eat. This was by far the worst customer service I'd ever experienced, and since I was newly diagnosed with a very limiting disease, I left very upset that day. I never eat here anymore unless there is no other choice. Please update your menu and staff to be friendlier to celiacs. That's a lot of the population. I have to dedicate my first review to my Denton love affair with Chopsticks. In my four years of residing in this town, this has been the one place that I constantly return to and have never refused. If you're put off by bearded waiters and a girl in a beanie making your sushi, then make your way back to 288. You walk in and seat yourself, they've added a huge new back section and re-modeled the entire entrance area so it looks like a completely different Chopsticks. I prefer a seat facing the door so as to see everybody that comes in or near the drink machine because it seems like my drink gets filled faster. As for food, everything that I've had has been delicious, save for the pho. Granted, it's been at least 2 years since I tried it, but as a seasoned pho veteran I'm not willing to order it in lieu of something that I KNOW is going to be awesome. Try the Tom Kha Gai, a slightly spicy coconut chicken soup with mushrooms in it. The sushi rolls have never disappointed, with spicy tuna and veggie tempura being my favorites (the bf's favorite is plain California, but still good!) I usually get either moo shu chicken thanks to my hoisin and daikon addiction, or chicken Pad See Ew with extra bok choy. All of the stir-fry dishes are good, with a choice of white or fried rice, or you can pay extra for brown rice/getting everything over noodles. As for dessert, well, I've never had room for it. A friend with a severe sweet tooth goes for the green tea ice cream, and I know they have a few other things as well. So maybe I'm a little biased since this was my second-ever Denton joint, and maybe I'm a little too enamoured with the awesomely friendly waitresses, but this place has my heart. It's a place that your giant group can go to and everybody can find something that pleases them. I've finally stopped giving this place the benefit of the doubt. The food is decently consistent but the service is more often than not very poor. The servers seem to just take random tables instead of zones. You sometimes do not see your server anywhere for long periods of time. Perhaps you could ask another server for assistance but good luck trying to figure out employees vs guests as they all wear casual street attire without even a basic name tag. Do not bother paying for a beverage as there are no hopes of getting a refill. Today our entree took 45 minutes to come to the table and yet our appetizer was still not delivered. To rub salt in the wound the server was very unhelpful when we asked about the missing appetizer. Yeah, the food is pretty good but the experience is just not worth it. This was my first time at this restaurant. The good - the food was fair to good, and the portions were large. Price was average. The bad- service was terrible. The waitress basically sat food and ran away before we could ask for items she forgot. We had to flag her down for correct drinks, napkins, more drinks, etc. I ordered Pho with chicken, unfortunately there was no chicken. I brought this to the waitress attention, and she said she would let the manager know, but he was talking to someone. He never came, no apologies, no corrected bill. If my son attends this college in a year, this restaurant will not be one we return to. I understand an establishment having an off day, but to show so little care for customer service by management and staff..this spoke volumes to me. read more

I went here last night. Major disappointment! I just could not go on and let others be mislead and think this was good Chinese food. I had the red curry with chicken. It smelled like a hot dog. If it had tasted like a hot dog it would have been better than it was. No spice and no flavor. Soggy veggies. Enough said. Wife had the lomein. It was a little better than the Red Curry but not much. I thought since this place had been here for so long and since the ratings on yelp and others were good it would be good. It is not. No salt on the tables either. This place is VERY popular w/ the UNT and TWU students. I'm thinking because of it's "cool vegetarian" vibe. I've tried it on 3 occasions and was not impressed. Food was WAY overpriced and the service was nothing great. The wait staff seemed really smug. The egg drop soup was inedible and the sweet and sour sauce was awful. However, like another poster mentioned, the shrimp tempura was very good. If I ever go back, I'll just get that. read more

A few months ago I ordered tempura shrimp (deep fried shrimp) and it came back RAW. The inside was jelly-like. The shrimp was clear and raw. I sent it back (I never send back food.. Ever) and the girl gave me an attitude and said ok they'll recook it. It came back a second time, still RAW. Raw shrimp. How? ... ?? I cut it open the second time, and didn't take a single bite. And she asked if it was okay again, and I nicely said it was still raw (news flash I'm not blind and dumb) and she argued with me saying that they cook it at a high temperature where it cooks the shrimp. TOO bad it didn't cook my food, because they gave me raw shrimp, twice... And the girl tried arguing with me then still charged me with an attitude. read more

The restaurant is way overrated! I don't know if it was bad timing or the chef was in a bad mood that day we went to, but the food was NOT good at all. But, today on the other hand I was not impressed with the customer service going through the drive-through I'm assuming her name was Mirna according to the ticket she was wearing a pink shirwas extremely rude, , terrible behavior and honesty enough to make me not want to come back. As I live just down the street, I thought I'd try Mr. Chopsticks. One of my favorite Chinese dishes is Szechuan tofu, so I ordered that as takeout with crab rangoons. The crab rangoons were okay and the sauce that came with them was great. Unfortunately, the Szechuan tofu was not good at all. It had no flavor except for salt and I couldn't taste even a hint of spice. It wasn't exactly cheap either... Not impressed :( I wish it were better seeing it is so close to my apartment, but I think I'll stick with my tried and true Chinese from now on. read more

Local place that has Sushi, Thai, Chinese and Pho. Had the spicy tuna hand roll and salmon roll. Low grade, small portion of fish. Not super fresh but this is a little dive in Denton. Daughter had lettuce wraps. Used long thin leaf romaine not iceberg so a wrap was not possible. The chicken mixture was really good but different than PF Changs. Interior is a little run down but has that campus vibe to it. Ill try again. read more

My friends and I are regulars... in house and take out. The more this place has grown the more spotty the food and service has become. And the music in the main dining area is too loud but don't bother asking to turn it down.. they can't, and the bass is stuck in overbearing range :-) Chopsticks comes with quirks. :-) Ordering the same thing each time does not always mean you'll get the same tasting food... too hot, too salty... very slow, etc. They are always willing to take back and fix... so if you have the time, you'll eventually get what you were expecting. Love the cucumber salad and the seaweed salad. I'll keep eating here because I like local businesses. read more

Did they really relocate? I thought it was gone forever! I'll have to check the new place out, but for now, I'll just write about the old location. The idea of a chinese food restaurant in an old renovated gas station is an interesting one, but it really worked. The food isn't 5 star quality or anything, but it was a nice little casual place. It was one of the first places I went in Denton, and one of the first places I went, years later, when I started dating my boyfriend, who lived in Denton at the time. Got to go at this cute shop in Denton. Ordered the fried rice and pad Thai. The service is friendly and the to go is nice and hot. I would say the food is ok, nothing that stands out. Never going here, again. Never once have a I had even decent service at best, which is unfortunate considering I don't find the food as good as the hype behind it (it's not bad food, but it's definitely not what it's chalked up to be... By any means). The last time I was there, I was there alone. There were only two other table seated, two at each, for a total of 5 people in there. I waited, and this is astonishingly not exaggerated, nearly half an hour before I was even spoken to... My waitress was very short with me to the point that I wondered if I had done something wrong or if she was mistaking me for someone... After she took my order, my food didn't come quickly. I ate it. It was fine. And by fine, I mean, not impressed. I couldn't help but think the entire time, "this is the quality of food I'm paying this much for? And for this kind of service?" The waitress never once came back by to ask to refill my drink. I ate my whole meal without ever getting a refill, and when I was finished eating, I know I sat there for another 10 minutes or so, just watching for anyone to walk by (I was seated back in the corner, near the bathrooms, by the way), and I was so frustrated and ready to get out of there, there was no way I was leaving a tip. First time in my life that I have not left a tip. I have never seen the hype behind this place, even among hearing some people say it's pretty hit-or-miss, but it will never get another chance from me to be one or the other. I'm also not normally one to leave poor reviews, because of how many people only review places if they had a bad experience, and that's usually because they came in being rude or something of that nature. Mr. Chopsticks is a great place for a chill delicious dinner. The service was quick and friendly. You can tell the people that work there are all creative. Their fried tofu is cooked perfectly that even though I'm a meat eater I've never ordered anything but the tofu! I eat at Mr. Chopstick's all the time and the food is typically good, but this evening it was not up to par. The sushi was not good, nor was the Kung Pao Chicken. Service-incredibly slow to even get water. Ten minutes before someone even came to the table. Food- hot and sour soup was bland. Nothing remotely resembling hot and sour soup and couldn't be redeemed with soy sauce. No visible chunks of tofu, bamboo or mushrooms. Just broth and pepper flakes. Spring roll wasn't even a spring roll. It was a terribly tough, steamed veggie egg roll rather than rice paper-wrapped, fresh veggies. No peanut sauce even offered. Don't bother. Perhaps it was a bad day in the kitchen. A really, really, horribly bad day in the kitchen. Or maybe the chef doesn't have taste buds. I don't know for certain. What I do know is that when I went there recently (for the first time) I had the misfortune of ordering the worst bowl of soup ever. What was supposed to be Wonton Soup (Pork wontons, BBQ pork, bean sprouts, carrot, scallion, garlic oil & cilantro in clear broth--per the Mr. Chopsticks menu) turned out to be Salt Lick Soup. So salty I couldn't eat it. Disgusting. And seriously, I had to order a Chinese style soup with no cilantro, wtf, cilantro? I know fusion, blah, blah, blah but no, just no. I tried one of the wontons before I pushed the whole mess away, and it was bland and watery. I should have read the soup descriptions more closely and noticed that every soup seemed like it had the same basic ingredients and one of them was garlic oil and the other was cilantro. Yikes. My companion ordered the cashew chicken. It was edible, but unlike any cashew chicken I had ever tasted before. One of the signature tastes that make this a great dish is the richness of unsalted, but toasted cashews. Not here. The few raw cashews we found hiding forlornly under the breaded (!) chicken were soggy and flavorless--but then, so was the rest of the gooey sauce. The portions are huge, so if you're invested in rude plenty, then this is the place for you. Maybe we made sad choices, but this seemed liked fusion with poor conception and even worse execution. Throwing a bunch of stuff into a pan doesn't magically make it fusion. I understand trying for a healthier Asian food experience but the health benefits of raw cashews versus unsalted & toasted cashews seems minimal while the tastes are miles apart. The service is very friendly if a little absent minded. They did take the soup off of the bill (as they should since it was wretched) and the server did mention that other customers earlier in the day had complained about the saltiness of other dishes. Every place has their bad days but I can't imagine that the food here is ever amazing--despite the good reviews. I suppose in fairness I should come back here and give this place another try. However, the memory of that salt soup makes me reluctant to be fair. read more

We just left this restaurant and are so happy! We were expecting "decent" sushi but were surprised that it was great! It's so hard to find good sushi. My 8 year old daughter had the honey bbq chicken wings and devoured them. We were happy with the service as well. Our waitress was very friendly and we never had empty cups! Eat here! i first tried mr chopsticks with my sister, a unt student. it's definitely a college spot. on a saturday night, my husband and i stopped in and the crowd had some variety with families and older couples. we started off with the wonton soup, which was entree sized. it was pretty tasty. the pork wontons were delicious but the broth was a little too fish saucy. i ordered the pad see ew and my husband ordered the bbq pork fried rice. i've had better, more authentic pad see ew. but my picky husband loved the fried rice and i agreed. the service was prompt during the busy dinner time. we wouldn't drive 30 minutes out of our way for mr chopsticks, but it is a strong contender when we're in denton. read more

I had take out twice from this spot and It was okay. The sushi was below my expectations be honest, no offense but after eating sushi in Boston for years I just have high expectations. The main dish I had Chicken Teriyaki I believe and it was alright. I mean I had better but I also had much worse. I wish they would tighten up the menu instead and focus on improving the quality. I'm not picky at all, and I just cannot find anything i like here. My good friend likes this place so we visit often, and I've searched the menu high and low for a dish I might like. I've even double ordered a few times to make sure I would have something to eat that my taste buds agreed with. No luck. I now refuse to eat here. The food quality and taste is just horrible. Our server Bryan was awesome. Very patient while I was waiting for my friend to meet me. He also was informative regarding recommended sake and answered all my friend's questions regarding the soup selection. I ordered the Combination platter #1 with Mustard Green Soup, Spring Roll, Green Bean Stir Fry and Brown Rice and my friend ordered the Pho, and we split a Rainbow Roll, everything was delicious, especially the soups. Great little place tucked away near two colleges. The employees and client base reflect this. It gives the place an eclectic feel yet with decent authentic foods. Can't really say that I have run across anything that bowls me over but we have been dining here 12-14 years. Don't mistake my last comment as derogatory at all, this place is way better than the cookie cutter chains or the Chinese buffets by a long shot. Plenty of vegan fare yet also delicious meat dishes too. The sushi is good, pho too, as well as Japanese, Chinese, and Thai food. We always have either the fried green beans or the tempura vegetables for an appetizer. It's a casual spot with reasonable prices, perfect for a regular stop for locals or a reliable place for visitors. So whether you're here for a four year degree, a UNT sporting event, or you live here and are looking for some variety I would recommend trying Mr. Chopsicks. read more

This place is very disappointing... My girlfriend and I were in the mood for Chinese but very hungry so we stuck to the basics and ordered orange chicken and shrimp tempura. The total was about $25 which seemed a bit pricey considering the food tasted as if it was bought from the frozen food section at Walmart. The chicken did not taste authentic. The only reason I am giving it a 2 star is because the shrimp tempura was pretty decent and Atmosphere is great and service is amazing. read more

Meh! We have been here 3 times and always leave disappointed. Their dishes are always on the bland side. Kung Pao chicken, spicy chicken fried rice, yellow chicken curry, and sushi are some of the dishes we have tried and it leaves something to be desired. Won't be coming back. read more
