By the time I drank my coffee, it was way more lukewarm than I wanted it to be but that's not a fault of theirs. I am in LOVE! I've been drooling over the pictures of the creme brulee latte since I first discovered this place on Yelp. I was super excited to come here to try it. This place is kind of in the middle of nowhere (compared to Berkeley) and when we walked in, we were greeted by the workers there who walked up to us and took our order. They were super sweet and told us to just sit down and that they would bring the drinks to us. The venue is super small and just has a few bar seats. When they brought the drinks to us, they flamed the latte in front of us as we saw the top of the latte harden like the top of a creme brulee dessert. The first sip was just amazing! It was super unique, and I loved the flavor of this latte. It was definitely worth the 40 minute drive from Berkeley. It was kind of sweet, so if you like more bitter coffee, then the creme brulee latte might not be for you. The workers were all super nice as we were the only people studying in this cafe for quite a while. A real special gem in quaint little Martinez. It was named as the #12 best coffee shop in the NATION for 2013 by the Coffee Review, and it's crazy to realize how this small business that just started a year ago could produce some real magic! It definitely has that small, local feel as the employees genuinely care about their customers and may take up an interest to talk to you. I always hear that this is a passionate business who cares about their coffee, and I can feel it. I went during a slow hour and ordered the Creme Brulee latte, which has to be ordered sitting-in in order for them to torch the top for you. After some sitting, the top turns into a delicate, crunchy cookie-like crust which is lovely. The latte itself was not too sweet and you can still taste the coffee. I like mine a little more on the bitter side, which I wish it was, but this was honestly a comforting and warm cup of coffee on a rainy day. I wouldn't have had it any other way! Though the place is small, it is reasonable for it being a new business, but they rock the reviews and I can see why. I can't wait to see how this company grows in my small little quaint hometown. The thing I love about independent coffee houses is they come up with unique, creative drinks you may not see anywhere else. Normally, I'm a Starbucks regular, as there aren't any independent coffee stores where I live, but on short trips elsewhere it's fun to stop by. In Martinez on a recent Saturday, and checking for coffee places in the area, I stumbled on Mountain Grounds. What really caught my eye was they had crème brûlée lattes. Now here was something unique! I definitely needed to stop by. It's located in a tiny strip mall off Alhambra Avenue in Martinez, between H & J Streets. It can be easy to miss if you haven't plugged it into your phone/gps. They have a lot of interesting drink combinations, including the aforementioned crème brûlée latte, which is what I ordered. You have to drink it there, because they come to your table to "torch it". But it's great fun to see a regular latte transformed into a crème brûlée creation! It's fun to drink as well. You poke a hole in the hard shell on top to get to the latte below, and then you can eat the cookie-like crème brûlée as you go along. The latte itself has a subtle sweetness to it, which I liked, but the barista mentioned if you want something sweeter you can get almost anything with a crème brûlée on top. For example, a white chocolate mocha latte could have that option. My son had an iced mocha latte, which he really enjoyed as well, and it's served in a glass mug if you are staying there. There are only a handful of seats inside, with more outside seating. But it's a very friendly place, the workers are very coffee-knowledgeable, and overall it's a great coffee experience here. read more

NO MORE TORCHED FLAME CREAM BRULEE COFFEE... bummer i put 4 stars so that i didn't lower their ratings. we went today 12/3/22 and am majorly bummed that they no longer have the cream brulee coffee that was torched on the top w/a flame. they now offer, i guess, what is a flavored cream brulee, but no longer the torched sugar one. that's why we would come to this shop. it's been a while since we've been here, so perhaps they stopped this some time ago, don't know... but def disappointed and sharing the info w/others. read more

This is one of my favorite local coffee shops! It's small but mighty. Each coffee is brewed individually and made to order with care. They have an extensive menu and they give you a glimpse into why they take such care with each cup of joe by sharing where they get their beans. There's something counter-cultural and unlike many coffee shops where speed is the name of the game, as Mountain Grounds takes several minutes to create your order. It's a great practice for slowing down and appreciating the process of coffee making and all that goes into it. If you're unable to wait, they have a lovely text-in option. In my opinion, Mountain Grounds coffee has gone downhill taste wise. You can trust everyone in Martinez to support this business even though their coffee is bad because the people of Martinez support everything in this town regardless. They don't really have standards for any business in this town and it shows. I've stated a few times that the coffee tastes weirdly salty and gritty. It's like they had really fine sand and poured coffee over it. My Fiancé can't even drink their coffee anymore, if I buy it for him it just sits on his desk. I've spoken to one of the guys there and he said that they've changed coffees but clearly, they don't take advice. A cute little coffee stop in Martinez! A hole in the wall with a few tables outside, and a few seats inside, you are here for the coffee and the limited pastries. Lots of regulars passing in and out. My latte was wonderful. Thick, but creamy, with a hint of that delicious coffee acidity, but for the most part was a nice smooth jolt of caffeine. Welcome the new coffee shop on the block. As a coffee snob, I'm excited a new coffee shop has arrived in the Martinez area. Don't disregard this place due to the small area, because this space packs a punch. When we arrived, we were welcomed by the owner and his assistant. Their kindness was exceptional. They took the time to tell us about where the coffee beans are roasted (BTW-in Montana). We ordered a Café Latte and the special of the day Chai Tea. The Chai Tea was amazing. We could have easily finished it all, before we even reached our car. That's how good it was. As for the Café Latte, I thought it was ok at first. The assistant made our drink and I think she was still learning on the ratio of espresso and soy. The owner asked me what I thought of the latte. I told him it was weak. There was more soy, rather than espresso. He kindly made a new latte which ended up tasting great. What I love about "mom & pop" café is the customer service. When you own the shop, you have to be twice as nice...bottom line this is your life line. You can't blame anyone for your failure, except yourself. I believe they will be successful, because you can tell they love what they do. They offer pastries from Saucie's Bakery and they also make Vegan Oatmeal and Gluten Free pastries. Call ahead to make sure they have what you are looking for. The most interesting service they offer is "TEXT YOUR ORDER". Basically, text your orders to 925-293-6872, indicate what you want, your car (i.e. red Tahoe) and when you will be arriving. All you have to do is pull up to the café and someone will deliver your drink to your car. No need to get out. How cool is that!! They also have a "$2 Honor Pay" for coffee, the cups and the carafe is on a table, all you have to do is fill your cup and drop $2 in the box and go.
