So's me and the family go to the "Mt Vernon at the Ship" in Saugus next to the Xmas tree shop for Sunday breakfast for my wife's B'Day. (Her parents chose the location.) We called them a day or two in advance and asked what time they open. The answer we got was "9am". Having been there before at opening and being disappointed at how NOTHING was ready for us, we decided to go a little later, we chose 9:30 for a reservation (just in case they were busy with a party or something) for the five of us. We showed up at 9:30 and were shown in to our table. Our waiter came to our table and introduced himself. He was the only outstanding part of this entire visit (Dave). He was finishing putting his tie on while he spoke to us and told us that there was no food out yet. Ok, we'll take coffee while we wait then. He apologized and noted that it was just starting to brew now but he'd get it to us as soon as it was ready. (And he did.) So we sat and chatted about everything under the sun drinking our coffee, Dave came and told us that some of the food was being put out now. So, at 9:40, my 85y/o mother-in-law (5 foot tall) decided to scope out the available food and figured she'd grab a bit of pastry while she was in there. She comes back to the table sheepishly with a few things on a plate and tells us she got scolded for looking for any of the food! She didn't even talk to anyone, just looked for it! 9:48 - Still no food, only bacon and sausage. 9:55 - Still no scrambled eggs. Ahhhh... 9:57 the eggs arrived. Obviously rescued from a flooded room. They were *SWIMMING* in liquid. I mention it to my wife who's behind me (and I didn't do it loud) and someone in the staff was smart enough to hear it and attempt to correct the problem. Minutes later, freshly cooked scrambled eggs, nice and dry, was brought to our table by someone. (Very nice touch.) Still none of the other hot items were available on the tables yet. So, all-in-all, it's 10am before we're able to sit down and eat for a 9:30 reservation for a 9am opening. And, the next customer shows up at 10:23 for a private party in a side room. Seems the word's getting out about breakfast here. The quality of the staff hasn't declined (although they did lose ?Pete? the omelet cook) but the management really screwed up again. Oh... BTW, while telling the wife of my review here, we looked at their website and it says "The Sunday Brunch Buffet includes Raw Bar, Carving Station, " which they claim is no longer being offered and hasn't been in a while. Add another negative to the mix. We're scratching the "Mt Veron at The Ship" off of our breakfast menu. The only good things we can say about it are: + It was a nice change to not have that idiotic piano player there for breakfast, last time we dealt with that we had to yell to be heard across the table. + Dave the waiter was courteous and attentive and very very pleasant as was most of the staff. (However, we could hear someone in the kitchen yelling at people to get things done.) read more

So sad to report that the Mount Vernon has changed! We came in at 9:30 pm on a Friday night (I work late). We were immediately told to order fast as the kitchen was closing. The staff was constantly coming by to make sure we were hurrying. We got the meal for two and they gave us the check and no desert. I insisted on desert as it came with the meal. So they brought it out. They never gave us popovers. We got the bum's rush and spent $75.00. The two stars are because the food is still awesome. This place made me feel like I was in their way. A male manager was strict and I don't think he liked the customers--so rude! One of the waitresses was snotty. Too bad, but I won't be returning. I have been coming here for 15 years. So it's not where you want to go if you're looking for an extraordinary cullinary experience (Bergamot would be better suited). However, if you want a decent meal at an excelent value, this place is about as good as it gets in Somerville. Recently we ate there (2 adults and a child) for $32 + tip. That was for the daily special for two ($23) which had popovers and butter (these stood out, and are truly exceptional, so soft and hot on the inside), soup (corn chowder, quite nice), a rotating entree of the day (we had roast beef on a Saturday), two sides, and a desert (custard or ice cream). A local staple especially for a local like myself. 4 of us went there for lobsters. Steve had a Mt Vernon card so we got the twin chicken lobsters for 12.99 and got a percentage off the tab. That's without going there on Monday or whatever day they offer the special. Well worth getting the card if you go a couple times a year. I attended Mother's Day brunch with 6 of my friends (all Moms) this past Sunday. To put it mildly, this was by far the most disappointing brunch we have ever attended. Not only was the food of poor quality, this meal was ridiculously overpriced. It was also confounding to us that there would be a 20% gratuity added to our check, when this was a self serve buffet; all our server did was bring us water. We wound up having to pay $48 per person for food that was worth $9.99 AT MOST. The desserts were soggy and all sitting in some sort of liquid. There were not enough eggs or bacon ad we had to wait for them to be made. The hash browns were way overcooked and poorly seasoned. I wound up eating maybe 2 eggs and a bite of 10 different things that tasted so bad, I couldn't eat a second bite. We were all very upset by this whole experience and would minimally like a refund for our money. It is safe to say, I will never be returning to your establishment. This is a solid townie place. I've been by there a million times but never stopped in. Finally, on Sunday afternoon, I had a late lunch/early dinner there. I ate in the pub area. The place was mostly empty due to the odd time of day. I started with the American Chop Suey. For $2.99, it was huge enough for a small meal, without getting anything else. It was a nice combination of macaroni, ground beef, spices, cheese, and bread crumbs, fresh-baked in a crock that was served piping hot. It could've been seasoned more, but after adding some worcestshire sauce and tabasco, it was fantastic. For an entree, I got the Stuffed Pork Chop. It was a single, large chop that was pink on the inside -- not undercooked, but juicy and perfect. The stuffing was tasty and fresh. It came with mashed potatoes, butternut squash, and a cup of applesauce. This was really good comfort food -- similar to the S&S in Inman Square. I live fairly close to here and stop in once a month or so. They serve good American comfort food, with a slight emphasis on seafood. I just had the Lobster Mac and Cheese the other day and liked it. The service is always good and the atmosphere fits the menu and restauarnt well. I have had a few items that I didn't care for, but for the most part the food is great. read more

I went there about 4 times, and it was always magnificent. The twin lobsters are so good, and an amazing price. The popovers are purely delicious, and they also have a very nice selection of craft soda. I went with a large party, and we always feel very welcomed. The pub service was nice, but the front desk at the Vernon dining was not polite to customers. Instead of being respectful, he was rude and refused to tell us the approximate amount of time we needed to wait or the number of tables before us. At the beginning he said about twenty minutes. After waiting for 25 min, we asked him how much longer, and he simply replied that he didn't know. We asked a few times in the following 15 min, and he got more and more impatient, sometimes without even replying. Finally he said 1 hour, in a loud voice and an arrogant manner, even though he said 20 minutes 40 minutes ago!!! The sides though, the baked potato seemed like it's been cooked the day before and sat out. The peas texture was mushy and were orange-green, like from a can. Ordered takeout from Mount Vernon recently. I got chicken, potato, veggies and salad. They cooked it to order, gluten free as requested. It was warm and delicious. Old time values of giving much more in value that actual cost of meal. Lovely waitress who was both helpful and funny...looking over menu there is a 2 for $22 dollar every day.....With the development of high end real estate in area it might not be long before owners figure out that more profitable to sell than run a restaurant....2 parking lots in back for free parking...seems like a "family" restaurant where owners actually care about the staff from their interactions so hopefully they will keep it going as a real hidden gem of restaurant and do go to support them and you will not be disappointed!!! I am from WA state visiting MA. We stumbled on this amazing diner. It was a little dated in decor but the twin lobster I had was excellent! Two whole lobsters for twenty nine bucks! I paid sixty nine for one at a chain in town.The staff was old school nice. The restaurant has a homey feeling. The owner was on site and even checked on us personally. The Mt. Vernon is not overpriced AT ALL. In fact - they are one of the last basitons of a true family style home cooking independent restaurants in the area. I almost always get food at the bar area - it's quicker than waiting for a table when it gets busy for dinner (usually 5-7 PM when all the old folks come by). One of the worse places I have ever eaten at! First the place is filthy, one of the worse I have ever seen. My family just had a bereavement dinner there this weekend after a funeral. The food was horrible. I have to say the service was OK can't fault them. I have eaten here in the past and never got a good meal after the third time I gave up on the place. Three times the prime rib was like shoe leather and cold! I only went this time because of the family and it's even worse than it ever was. The prime rib was over done and I got a slice about the size of a Micky D's Quaterpounder . I think i would have enjoyed that better. So many choices on the menu and the specials list, some super well priced, some a little more $$ than you'd think. While I was waiting I ordered a pinot grigio that came in a little carafe so you got about 2 glasses for the price of one. You can't go wrong with a $9.99 hot turkey sandwich with potato, stuffing and veggies tho. Turkey was maybe a tad dry but real turkey and lots of it w/ good gravy. Friend's roast beef sandwich was freshly sliced and warm. Some of the best onion rings I've had in recent memory. And of course you get those yummy popovers to start. Dessert was grapenut custard, excellent and appropriately old school. With a bottle of root beer and tax, it came to $41 and was well worth it. read more
