I am so incredibly disappointed. I LOVE Morenos. I order my son's birthday cake every year since he was born. I've also ordered their delicious Cuban sandwich, amongst other things. However, they have completely dropped the ball. I called and ordered Pernil for Thanksgiving and was given something completely different. I called and even spoke to the owner with no resolution. I had to go out and buy the pernil from a different place. I'm not sure what happened, but I'm disappointed that I ordered 3 lbs of meat we couldn't eat. The meat was uneatable, and I had to spend another $30 for the right meat. I'm out $60, and all I was offered was mojo. The meat tasted like turkey, even though I was assured it was pernil. I haven't been to Moreno's forever and forgotten how wonderful it is. They have everything from lite bites to thee most incredible desserts. I went Friday evening, sadly on a partially full stomach. My eyes wanted to try everything, but my stomach settled on chicken noodle soup and a chicken empanada. O M G, it was the right choice and more than filling. The soup was thick and hearty, with a chunk of corn on the cob and chicken in it. The thick cut veggies were tender, not mushy and the broth was perfectly seasoned. I could not eat it all and had the leftovers for lunch on Saturday and it was just as perfect the second time around. As for the empanada, perfect! Thick pieces of chicken and fresh spices wrapped in a heavenly dough. I couldn't eat all of it and brought it home for a midnight snack. Still tender and wonderful hours later. The reason I could not eat all of my meals was that my dining partner and forever decided on the Swai fish with spinach soufflé and yucca. The tenderness of the lightly fried Swai and spinach soufflé was something my fork could not keep resisting. The creaminess of the soufflé left me wanting more. The yucca was tender and warm. Unfortunately, none of his meals made it home. This hidden gem is a few mere miles from home and I drive by it almost daily. Sadly, I did not try any desserts. I've had their sweets before and they are beyond delicious. I think I will stop by one morning this week and treat my office staff to their wonderful sweet morsels and do a post just on them. On this is one of my go to places for delicious treats and they have so much to choose from! This specific visit I ended up getting a fudge brownie, a apple slice and ducle de Leche Napoleón. Every was so good my son loved the brownie it was very rich with a smooth icing on top. The apple slice had a icing as well but for me the apple were to big of chunks I ended up breaking it down to smaller bites. With all of the choices and varieties of Cuban food available in our area you are sure to find highs and lows in the ways proprietors present their cuisine. Definitely the Cuban sandwich was a high. I'm sure there are many more A-plus goodies, including the taste-tempting baked goods on display! Along with the Cuban sandwich, I got a cup of the Black Bean soup. For me, the soup was a watered-down letdown. The soup base was almost clear with no viscosity to it. The flavors were not bad, but I am used to almost always getting a soup with a thicker base elsewhere. A heavier soup base carries the bean flavors so much better and gives this soup the heartiness it deserves and typifies. Judging from the incredible Cuban sandwich, I feel bad mentioning even slightly negative issues. BUT, what's the point of a review if it's not factual? My first impression, or anyone's first impression on their first visit is the person at the point of sale. THEY are the face of the place, representing the owner and all their hard work. Their interaction with a customer sets the mood. AND, in many cases, a desire whether or not to return. The girl at the register that I interacted with was quite bland. I made some hopefully positive comments about the place to which she stood looking at me like a zombie. I'd rate her customer service skills as needing some training and insight. Secondly, I simply wanted water to drink. I'd have preferred a cup so I could have gotten ice and water from the fountain drink machine. Instead, I was offered to purchase a bottled water. Not an issue, but the water was luke cool. Like drinking out of a garden hose. My BIGGEST issue? Moreno Bakery should consider some more environmentally friendly ways to deliver the food. Tons of paper and plastic handed out, so people can walk 30 feet away to a table, consume the contents, then discard it. ALL of which likely ends up in a landfill. They are not alone in this practice; it happens most everywhere. But I did find it extremely wasteful to put my Cuban sandwich in a paper wrapper, then place that wrapper into a large paper bag. All so I could walk to a table, pull the Cuban sandwich out of the paper bag, then throw the paper bag away! That's a whole lot of paper bags going to waste. Okay, enough of the negative. I'm definitely looking forward to a return visit to Moreno Bakery. This time, I will take in some of the hot food offerings they dish up family style. First time here after hearing so many good things about this place. One thing I didn't know was that they had inside dining. All the showcases full of desserts are so tempting and look delicious. I wanted to try one of everything! There is also a showcase full of hot, prepared foods for lunch/dinner that looked good. You can have breakfast sandwiches made and also other sandwiches of your choice. I opted for the breakfast sandwich with scrambled eggs, bacon and Swiss cheese on a grilled bun. We did wait a long time for it, but I was shocked when it arrived how large it was. We could have easily split the sandwich. The scrambled eggs were so light and fluffy, like I make at home, but not like something I ever eat outside my home. The cheese and bacon were a good touch and added flavor. Moreno Bakery is a place that I have loved since moving to Florida. Their bakery is wonderful. We have gotten my wife's birthday cake there, as well as a lemon meringue for mine. I had mentioned it last week to people at work as one of my favorite. I ordered a pressed cuban. My wife, who was getting over cold, asked about chicken soup. Chicken soup was listed on the menu. The person serving us rudely said we don't have chicken soup, only what you can see out. My wife and I were a bit taken aback. I paid for my sandwich and two drinks. My wife didn't get anything. We were planning on sitting there and having a meal together. Instead, we just took my sandwich to go. Now to the sandwich, it was just not great. There was VERY little press to it. The pork used to have great flavor, today it was quite bland. The bread wasn't great, which is concerning for a bakery. I am a little sad. I loved this place and looked forward to it. First timer...I was in the area with my daughter for a doctor appointment and decided to try this place for a quick lunch. I first ordered a Greek salad at the counter. The salad was a decent portion. The quality of the lettuce was very good as was the other ingredients. Surprised I did not find any onions used in the salad but it was good. It was served with a scoop of potato salad which was homemade and possibly the best I have had. After my salad I decided to order an iced mocha coffee to go as I had to pick my daughter up from an appt. It was a bit pricey and not quite what I was hoping for but good. I am not sure I would get one again though. When I picked up my daughter and told her about my discovery she wanted to go back and bring sandwiches home for her and her husband. She ordered 2 Cuban sandwiches. While we waited for the sandwiches to be made we were enticed by the bakery items. My only pet peeve with the bakery was no prices displayed and when it is busy you do not feel comfortable asking what each item's price is. I bought a iced brownie (have not had one in years), an iced cookie (sign said they were 1/2 off) and a Neapolitan to bring home to my husband. My daughter chose 2 of the small pies. The total was reasonable but when I checked the receipt when we were no longer in the area, I discovered I was charged $3.30 for a cookie... find it hard to believe the regular price is $6.60 when the brownie was $3.xx regular price. This is why I took off one star (and the lack of prices). Honestly the lack of prices at the bakery area may be to their detriment because more items might be purchased if prices were provided somewhere. The cookies are lighter than a sugar cookie and yellow in color which my daughter and I were happy with. It was very tasty for our drive home. Moreno Bakery is a bit of a hidden gem and my wife and I will be back. We stopped in here Saturday around noon for lunch. It was busy but it was one of the best Cuban sandwiches we've had. The parking lot was bustling. We parked and walked in. Moreno Bakery is more than just a bakery. They have lunch, sandwiches, a hot food bar and the largest bakery case I've ever seen. It's a little chaotic near the registers. There's no line. Just a bunch of people standing around. Once you figure out who needs to order before you, you jump for the next available cashier. My wife and I both ordered Cuban sandwiches. Hers was 9" and mine was 12". We each got a bag of chips and a drink. $26. Not bad at all. I've seen some talk about high prices but I think that is for the hot food bar. We got out of the register fray and headed towards the back of the dining area. We took a seat and waited. About 15 minutes later, our name was called. I then realized why everyone was up at the front. With no intercom system and a noisy restaurant, you may not hear your name called. The sandwiches were hefty and we dug in. These were good Cubans. Fresh toasted bread, pressed, ample amounts of ham, salami, house-made pork, swiss cheese, pickles and mayo. The 12" was giant! I only ate half and saved the other for lunch the next day. My wife had the 9" and she could barely finish that. It wasn't until I was writing this review that I realized that the 12" is double meat and $3 extra. Either way, it was an affordable, delectable, filling lunch. We couldn't leave without at least trying one bakery item. The issue is, what to choose. There are easily more than 100 items. Cookies, cakes, bars, pastries, you name it, they have it. Everything looked good and I could have taken one of each. My wife went with a linzer tart and I went with the Chinese marble cookie. Both of them were good! We will definitely be back here. For my celiac friends they make a GF chocolate brownie cookie and a series of almond based cookies. Yuuuum. For everyone else the colors and aromas are amazing and my husband is a fan of every item he has selected. The savory foods have an ethnic flair and do not disappoint my favorite is the picadillo dinner and the fried plantains are perfection. The service is efficient albeit not warm, think deli service counter in fact there is even a "take a number" process in place. The sit down areas are very like a cafeteria. This place is insane! The bakery is monstrous! I don't think in all of my travels have I seen a bakery this big, or a wider selection of baked goods and pastries. When you walk in you'll see bakery items in front of you, when you turn to the left, you'll find the deli. They have an interesting ordering system but once you do it once you'll figure it out. It seems to work for them and the multitude of regulars that visit. Let's start with the deli. I ordered the Cubano and split it with my friend. It's huge. We also ordered a small bag of Miss Vick's chips that were terrible--as if they were spoiled--but the bag was sealed. They're very proud of their chips and ask a ton for a small bag with only 1.375 ounces of chips. It's not Chanel Perfume priced but BYO Chips! Anyway, the sandwich is outstanding. The bread is fantastic. The meat and preparation are perfect. I can put away a large sandwich but this one I'm happy to split this one. The price is also quite reasonable. I also combined it with a proper Cuban coffee (we'll just call it Americano style) which was very flavorful and at the correct temperature. We took some baked goods to go and they did not disappoint. This place can crank out massive amounts of pastries yet they were not overly sweetened and expertly crafted. This is a no frills place with limited interior seating and some bistro tables and chairs on the sidewalk in front of the entrance. You can order to go. I don't know all the bakeries in the Brandon area but I can't imagine there's another one with the selection, quality, and price combination of Moreno Bakery. One of my favorite spots in Brandon. I randomly stopped here one day and I'm glad I did. When you walk in, there is a line for hot food and a line for desserts. Let's start with the hot food! In terms of reputation, Moreno Bakery is almost something of a legend in the Brandon area. This local family owned bakery serves up an overwhelmingly huge variety of foods, and not just baked goods either. They have take home sandwiches, salads, and hot foods that could please any taste and mood that you may find yourself in. In recent years, they've expanded exponentially (at least from the last time I've been, which embarrassingly enough is actually SEVERAL years go, but still under ten!) Upon walking in, I was slightly overwhelmed with the sheer size of the place and the selection, so it was hard for me to zone in and focus on what to get. Nonetheless, I settled on what I felt was a good choice. I knew I definitely HAD to get a cupcake, because cupcakes are life (at least mine), but I decided to get something more sustaining than just cupcakes (like good girl). Now, I originally walked in with a game plan to grab a personal cheesecake, since I've had one years ago and wanted it again, but one look at the cupcake case and I knew that simply wasn't an option. I mean, the cupcakes were HUGE, practically a full size cake in and of itself! Cheesecake may have to be on my next trip out here. So, I went for their mudslide cupcake, which has either Bailey's or Kahula; I don't remember which. It survived my hot car ride home without the frosting melting everywhere, which made me breathe easy. Now it might just be my imagination, but I could swear that the chocolate cake itself had the spirit flavoring to it, but I'm pretty sure I could taste it mingling with the chocolate. It had a rather rich filling inside infused the Kahlua (or bailey's), which was a nice little surprise, and was crowned with fluffy chocolate and spirit infused buttercream frosting. Delish! For my dinner, I went with some fried shrimp (because always a crowd pleaser and a good choice), gouda mac and cheese (because I'm always down for mac and cheese) , and some collard greens (for good measure while I'm trying to balance it out to make it resemble a healthy meal). The fried shrimp was very lightly breaded and well seasoned. The mac and cheese and creamy, and had that subtle, rich gouda taste I love. Collard greens are collard greens, but they did the job to balance out an otherwise heavy meal since they really loaded me up on the fried shrimp! The journey for me to get their was long and somewhat perilous as I had to use the toll lanes throughout the car ride, but it was worth it, and I as I left back home, I think I could get back there with less trouble to get that cheesecake and other goodies! read more

Moreno's bakery is such a Tampa staple. There is something for everyone's taste buds. It is important to note, there is a good chance it will be busy but their queue works fairly quickly. The service is great at Morenos, and staff try their best to get orders done and to the register for checkout. Our last visit, we got the banana crème pie, a winter cupcake, a gingerbread man cookie and a chocolate cannoli. All the desserts were great. I was very unhappy with the poor treatment my wife and I received at the bakery. At a friends recommendation we went to the store at 6:30PM. My friend my wife and I were the only customers in line. My friend is taken care of and she and the hot line server left, her server never returned. Another girl shows up and asks who's next and a darker skinned Spanish speaking lady who had just walked in put her hand up and said in Spanish that she was. I protested but was told by the girl that the brand new customer was next and started taking her order in Spanish. Now I don't care if you have a "Latin" heritage or prefer to speak Spanish if it's more comfortable for you but I was feeling the disrespect for sure and prejudice towards me felt real. The first server that took care of our friend still hadn't returned so the girl asked us what we wanted. First off I again told her that we were in fact there prior to the customer she just helped and she told me I was mistaken. She said I was being helped by the other server that had never returned. Her English was either very poor or she was acting like she couldn't understand to brush me off. Arguing just wasn't worth it. To top it off the Spanish speaking customer took the last of the Beef Stew I had decided I was going to order was taken by the lady that was moved ahead of us by the server. We selected our meals and I paid for our food but didn't leave my usual generous tip as the poor service didn't warrant it. I got to my friends table fully 10 minutes after she started eating. We found her seated the next table over from a very smelly homeless person complete with a walker/cart of his belongings. My friend said he had just shuffled out of the restroom before we got to the table. I wanted to sit a bit and enjoy my meal but it was barely warm. 5 minutes into this bad experience 1/2 of the lights were turned off and the sweepers were sweeping and they smelly person was asked to leave, he didn't, so we packed our food up and prepared to leave. I needed to use the restroom before I left but changed my mind when I walked in. There was urine and feces in the toilet and what appeared to be vomit on the floor. I waited until I got back to my friends house to use the bathroom. I now understand that the bakery closes at 7:00PM and not the 8:00PM that my friend thought it did. That 10 minutes while we stood cooling our heels while a Jane come lately was served ahead of us would have made a difference though.
