Overall a good experience. We enjoyed our sandwich but were not that impressed with the guava cream cheese pastry. Also, the empanada felt a bit on the small side for the price. Glad we checked it out!
Got a chicken empanada from La Segunda Bakery via toast local by using my five dollar birthday treat. The chicken empanada was out of this world & packed with flavor. Pick up was easy and a breeze. Good job La Segunda Bakery & Cafe !
A while back while visiting Tampa, I had two foodie goals. One of them is to acquire Cuban pastries from the 1915 La Segunda Bakery. They have four locations, and we went to the one in the Ybor City Historic District. La Segunda is an institution for Cuban bread and pastries, baking 18K loaves daily and ships nationwide via Goldbelly. Our niece's BF is Cuban, and he said buy anything with guava. In the box (see photo), we bought two each of guava flip (kind of a folded tart or empanada), guava turnover, and guava flip with cream cheese. All of them are delicious! I like the flaky guava turnovers the most even though they didn't survive the transportation across the country in my backpack as well as some of the others. Even though slightly crumbly, still yummy! I also bought butter cookies, sold by the pound. Those are relatively ordinary; I'll skip those in the future. Next time, we are carrying Cuban sandwiches home! I really wish I carried them home. I was having Cuban sandwich withdrawal. This location is older but functional; there isn't seating. Their customers know what they want, and everything moves FAST. If it's your visit (like it was for us), I suggest looking at the menu online to know what to order. The service is friendly, even though I can tell he was a bit exasperated that I didn't just yell out my order and I asked questions. I honestly don't fault him. Busy places have their own pace, and the customers are the ones to keep up. That's perfectly ok.
One of my favorite bakeries in Tampa, and this is the original location that's been around for a long while. It's got such a nice feel to it, from the vintage industrial building to the Havana feel inside. What I come back here for again and again is the Cuban toast. I get it with guava and wow is it delightful. But they have tons of baked goods and a few meal items to choose from. I've enjoyed everything I've tried here. You can get coffee too but it's very standard stuff- black coffee, or latte with 3 flavors choices. Many people also come to get bread loafs to have at home, and it is so worth the wait if it's busy. Parking can get a little tricky but trust me that this is a prime Tampa experience to try La Segunda.
I have heard a lot of hype about this place over the years and needed to meet somebody just off the interstate to give them something so thought this would be an easy spot. The parking is awful. It is very small inside; it is counter service and carry out only. The drink options include coffee, sodas, sweetened iced tea from the soda machine; that is it. No hot tea or unsweet iced tea. The gal at the register did not know what pastries were included in the combo meal. The bakery case did look amazing and everything I got tasted great.

Even with that one down fall this is the place to go for either and or pastries or Cuban sandwiches. When we arrived there were 3 customers already there, but had all ordered. The ordering process was quick, but the delivery was a little on the slow side, but it's understandable as they were also filling to go call in orders too. By the time we left there was a steady stream of people coming and going. The line moved fast and everyone seemed happy with their orders. Someone even ordered 5 giant loaves of Cuban Bread. They were many feet long and a handful to carry. They must be having a party and making the sandwiches at home. What a feast. We ordered and shared the Cuban and it was delicious. So much better then the one we got off of Gold Belly, that was supposed to be authentic. We loved every bite and wished we lived closer so we could get this again. We were in Tampa only for the day and my husband found this place on Yelp. It got great reviews so we thought we'd try it out and it delivered. We also got the cherry pastry. It was delicious. It was filled to the brim with cherries. The pastry was flakey and soft and perfect. It was a perfect dessert. I wish we had gotten more pastries for later. The Yelp reviews are accurate. This really is a 5 star Bakery and Sandwich shop. It's known for it's Cuban Sandwich and the Cuban Sandwich lived up to the high expectations we had.
La Segunda is a Tampa classic, but this was my first time visiting their original Ybor location. It was already getting busy at around 8 on a Saturday so I can't imagine what it's like later in the morning! I just got a chocolate croissant as I was out on a bike ride and just wanted a quick pastry, but I've had their Cuban before which is great. It took about 5 minutes just to get the pastry since it was busy. The croissant was a bit dry and not the most flaky but I know it's not their specialty and I'm sure there are better things to try. La Segunda supplies the Cuban bread for lots of places in the Tampa area (I think Colombia, DI Coffee, etc) so I know their bread is consistent and delicious. Overall, La Segunda is a historic bakery that has stayed consistent and has good quality baked goods and even better sandwiches.
It is mainly a togo place so people quickly order and go off with their orders. Staff are friendly and not too bad of a wait when I came 15 minutes before close. Unfortunately, they also ran out of the pulled pork which resulted with adding extra ham and made the Cuban sandwich too salty. The bread itself is good. The pastries are decent and crispy too. Overall, it seems like an ok spot but I grew up in LA and feel as though Porto's was more impressive with a wider selection of items, better ambiance, and good quality too.
Small, chaotic deli/bakery. I was told this was a must when in Tampa. I didn't try any pastries or baked goods but they looked beautiful. Their sandwich bread is excellent. I know the Cubano is what they're known for, but I got the muffaletta sandwich. It was good but not epic. I'm glad I checked this spot out though because it was a good opportunity to spend some time in Ybor City and pass by the cigar plant.

It was nice place but little complicated to find parking on Kennedy avenue in Tampa, FL We entered the place and it was very easy to follow through. The menu was great and the foods look good. I had café con leche with Cuban toast with butter and Guava cream cheese pastry.
If you're visiting Ybor City, do yourself a favor and stop by La Segunda Bakery and Cafe. This historic bakery has been serving the Tampa community since 1915, and it's easy to see why it's still a local favorite over a century later. (La Segunda Bakery) Everything we tried was incredible! The sandwiches are huge, loaded with flavor, and made on their famous fresh Cuban bread. The empanadas were perfectly seasoned and packed with delicious fillings. And don't even get me started on the pastries, they're fresh, flaky, and absolutely amazing. The best part? The prices are incredibly reasonable, especially for the quality and generous portions you receive. Delivery order breakfast during our Tampa trip. The pastelito de guayaba con queso was incredibly fresh and flaky, featuring a huge and well filled crescent portion. The guayaba con queso flip was also delicious, but it texture was not quite as outstanding to me when compared to the pastelito. I am from Miami, so I have eaten Cuban pastries my entire life. I had to try the Tampa-version at La Segunda Bakery for the Cuban history and comparison. You can tell that this is a hot local spot, and they were very busy. Their employees were efficient but not chatty like I am used to in the Miami Cuban bakery environment. I ordered the pastelito de guava and queso and a cafe con leche. The cafe was standard, and the pastry was flaky and not too sweet since it did not have the layer of sugar that the Miami ones usually have, which was a nice change-up. The prices were a bit more than I am used to in Miami, however, the pastry was huge. My kids had cookies and enjoyed them, I personally found the cookies to be dry. I would say come here for the history and comparison to Miami if you are in town, but I would not run here again. Also, there is no seating on-site and parking is limited. We took our pastries to-go and ate them at a nearby historical park named Centennial Park where there was plenty of seating. read more

I must have been stuck under a rock for too long. I come to Ybor/Tampa often and Ive known this bakery was there and passed by many times. Well my bad!!! But now I know.. this place is . Probably the best Cuban I've had in a long time. Customer service is amazing and the selection of YUM.. I won't miss out again and will be on my list every time I'm in the area. I am beyond upset we didn't purchase more on our first visit. I mean I've always loved pastries but I've never had a guava cheese flip and we got a cinnamon roll and Cuban sandwich. The cinnamon roll was just okay. Not worth repurchasing. But that guava cheese flip and the Cuban were absolutely phenomenal. We brought back half a loaf for my husband's coworker and I almost wonder if we should have done something similar since we don't have Cuban bakeries in Arizona. Obviously way too late now. So now i know for next time to make sure you load up on ALL of the things If you don't have a bakery like this near your home. Or even remotely close. Don't make my mistake! No-fuss bakery serving delicious sandwiches and pastries that's been around for over 100 years. Not a 5 star because I didn't care for the coffee, it tasted burnt. However, the cubano and medianoche sandwiches are hearty and flavorful, not to mention SOLID! The chicken empanadas were packed with a lot of chicken and yup you guessed it, flavor.The guava-cheese turnover is also tasty. Place your order with one of the friendly cashiers and wait on the side. I also saw many people walk up to pick up a phone order. Parking- very limited up front but there's street parking. I had a layover in Tampa and decided to grab a bite outside of the airport to kill time. I am so glad I decided to try this place because the sandwich was one of the best Cubanos I've tried. The bread was nice and thin and I love how there wasn't too much bread for the amount of meat there was. The lechon was flavorful and extremely tender. The ham was sweet and succulent. I got the 9" and it was the perfect amount to keep me full all day. It took a little while to get my food but there were a ton of people so I was not annoyed in any way. All the workers were lovely and kind. The inside is a bit small and there are no seats, so definitely take it home or do what I did and walk over to a park to enjoy your sandwich! read more

Great historic spot. My son had a grilled cheese (on that famous Cuban bread) with fruit cup and my husband and I got a Cuban sandwich. Coming from south Florida I am always a tad skeptical of anyone boasts a good Cuban but they were worthy of the praise. I wasn't expecting the salami but it was a nice touch. Overall, a solid sandwich. The spot itself has no seating and no public restrooms. It's an order and eat in your car or take to go kinda spot. Staff friendly. read more

This little Cuban café and bakery was a delightful find! With over a hundred years of history, it's a true gem in Tampa. We started with a guava cheese pastry--huge, flaky, and bursting with flavor. It was the perfect sweet treat after our traditional Cuban sandwich. The sandwich itself was everything you'd hope for: a perfectly thin, crispy layer of bread, generous portions of meat, and that ideal mix of mayo, mustard, and pickles. Every bite hit all the right notes for a classic Cuban. We also tried the beef and cheese empanada. At first, I hesitated at the $5 price tag for a small empanada, but after one bite, it was clear it was worth every penny. It was generously stuffed with flavorful picadillo, seasoned ground beef with onions and peppers, giving it a surprising and delicious spicy kick at the end. Overall, the flavors were outstanding. This is definitely a place worth revisiting--an authentic Cuban bakery you'll want to return to again and again! read more

I have been dying to try this place, ever since I heard this is where the most authentic Cuban bread is from. I mean, if other restaurants get their Cuban bread from here then you know it must be official! Well, it was! There was a long line when I pulled up around noon on a weekday. There were so many tasty looking options that all looked and sounded amazing. I ended up getting a breakfast sandwich, Cuban sandwich, and a friggin' 36" Cuban bread loaf! Everything tasting great....plain and simple. When you wake up the next day crazing more, then you know this is where it's at! read more

How long have they been a bakery in Tampa ? I used to buy in Tampa many years ago, before I moved out of the area and have forgotten the name and where the bakery was, the bread was the best ever and the Cuban Pizza was the greatest!
La Segunda and Alessi have both been around for a very long time, each over 50 years. La Segunda is just north of Ybor on 15th, Alessi is on Cypress. Alessi is pretty famous for their Scachatta, which is pizza-like...but La Segunda sells it too.…
