avoid this place. like an other review says perfectly, with So many great, tasty, cheaper even, far more authentic spots in town, do not waste your time on less than mediocre food. I want to offset the misleading review Zagat has since I went because they said good things. FAIL.
my 1st night was such a debacle; staff constantly crashing into my chair in the cramped front area, a very indifferent waitress, in spite of whirring crowds of people and staff all around our table, no one approached us for over 10 mins(!) so I got up and asked the host stand a mere 5-6 feet away watching us for a waiter for water and wine.
my friends shrimp and avocado app was good, but my pasta 'special' (hah!) was nothing but buttered spaghetti w/re-hydrated wild mushrooms! it tasted like a kid's meal of butter n salt on pasta. wtf? at $20+, I don't think so. I ate little of it, my friend noticing, coaxing me to say something. I did, the manager came, he was busy rushing, and instead of being pro customer oriented, he looked down his nose and did nothing but defend the dish. 'simple dishes can be delicious' he said. yeah, if ingredients weren't crap, lol. I've been to Italy, my fave country, 3 times for almost 2 months cumulatively. pa-lease.
he grabbed the plate away, enter indifferent waitress, she offered up a fish special as a suggestion. I agree. it comes, NO sides, a rather small fish, some slime is on 1/4 of it, so the amount of food it was literally could fit in a 1/2 cup. the icing on the cake? the bill comes, and they took off my $20-something pasta, and replaced it w/this fish, which was about $30!!! WHAA!? I worked in restaurants in college, we all know, custom is to charge the original dish, and just 'give' the desired 2nd dish away. what a bait n switch! the waitress offering SUCH an expensive dish w/o telling me they'll charge me for it. we just left, grumbling.
I called the next day complaining to the mgr, hoping this one would be professional. instead of refunding anything, she invited me back free. I hesitated, crap food, crap service, why do I want to schlep there for an eve like that? she offered it free for 2. ok, she's trying. I accept.
we went last night, a jolly waiter was refreshing, this manager this time (from Rome, charming guy) was perfect, they really tried and customer service was better. but we were squashed in this weird table arrangement where you were literally walled into the booth side by tables that booted up to each other. moving in and out was awkward and neighboring tables next to us actually had to stand up, move out, move their tables and sit back down. what is this place thinking?
the food was better, but remarkably mediocre. great octopus, the 1 great thing, but bad suggestion by the waiter for the lamb pasta dish, way too spicy to eat, tasted like canned tomato paste vs a nice Italian sauce (here we go again). the rabbit pasta was good, the pasta a bit mealy though. and after trading mine w/my friend since it was too spicy to even eat (I'm NOT that sensitive), I found a thin, 3/4" long bone in the rabbit dish. and then a piece of cartilage the size of an M&M. gross. really. this is NOT a good restaurant. celeb chef of not. I couldn't bear to tell the staff the issues as they were trying so hard. but I will also never go back. 3.5 stars is pushing it if you have any taste. I'd say 3, hence I'm trying to pull down the rating w/1 star.
and you can tell. looking around, you know when it's an 'in the know' crowd, or a mediocre, generic crowd, w/some B&T-ers on wkends. this is exactly that. blah.
