An old favorite making a comeback! After several years we went to Morandi on a Saturday evening without any reservations. We were lucky to snag spots by the bar area, it reminded me why I always enjoyed this place in the past. The bartenders and servers are super friendly!! The food is consistently good, we got the sausage pasta and the bolognese pasta. Both extremely delicious and big portions. Always too too generous with the wine pours. If the bartender likes you, they'll fill your class to the brim! I am glad Morandi is again a spot on my list when I am craving some Italian. read more

This place is super vibey! I came here Friday night at 9:30 pm. I had a reservation but we had to wait 15 minutes before our table was ready. Every single table was full. I love the warm ambient lighting in the restaurant. Service was great! Our water was always filled up and they brought us a second basket of bread when we asked. My friends and I got fries ($12) to share. I got the bolognese, which was recommended by our server. Honestly, it was not that good. I liked the bolognese from Saint Theo's more.... Debatable... I know this place used to be popular but I'm not sure what was the hype about. Food is decent but nothing out of the ordinary. It's really expensive for the mediocre food they serve. Overall great experience here. I actually felt so homey and peaceful in here with the rustic brick and decor. Staff were all helpful but not very personal. They serve their role but do not have much interaction with the customers (I can't figure out if this is a bonus or a negative). We got the margarita focaccia as an app and it was perfect for 4 people to split. My pasta was so delicious and was my favorite course. Dessert was okay but nothing too unique. In Latin, the verb form "morandi" can mean something like "to better play the fool," which, coincidentally, is not an imperfect way of understanding this lackluster West Village eatery. It starts off ignominiously, when "signature" martinis are so poorly balanced and ill-crafted that they must be exchanged for more passable negronis. Grilled octopus has become a crowd pleaser around this town, but their version suffers from, in some places, anemic coloring and, in others, overbearing char. The poorly dressed and strewn greens do little to enhance the dish's bottom line. The fried mozzarella and prosciutto balls were the best dish of the night, but they weren't fried à la minute and sorely lacked a bit of flaky sea salt and a zingy acid that would bring them to the next level. The meatballs lacked any discernible flavor aside from a light beefiness and a texture that can best be described as mush. The pitifully small portion also means this ought to be an appetizer rather than a main course. The bolognese was equally uninspiring, presenting as more of an insipid meat sauce rather than a richly complex ragú. To add insult to injury, the upcharged burrata seems more rooted in profit expansion than any earnest desire to make the dish better. The staff are amiable and pleasant. The atmosphere is loud and the crowd varied. In the end, one is not sure who is playing the fool here. Is it the establishment that (hopefully) believes it is serving quality dishes? Or is it the customers spending their hard earned money on food better suited for business class lounges and speciality cruise dining? Not Recommended. read more

Morandi was a place that a friend of mine chose to go for lunch and was a great place to go for a "scene" in the village, and he was right! The place was jumping and vibrant, and he made a reservation for a table and we were able to be sat right away even though the place was packed. Wonderful service, great food...so what's the problem? NOISE! It was so loud we couldn't ourselves think! The table beside us turned over twice with couples leaving because of the noise. It's dark and the booth seats are adorned with red leather. Molto sexy. It's Saturday afternoon and we're given brunch menus. I zero in on the Tagliatelle alla bolognese and my wife chooses a frittata special. We order two glasses of Italian wines so let the dining begin! Our wine choices are perfect, now our entrees come to us quickly. My freshly made pasta, mmmm. Perfecto. The Tagliatelle was cooked perfectly and the bolognese sauce was sooooo good. Most of them were bland and pretty mediocre. 1. Insalata di Cavolini di Bruxelles: It was refreshing and tasty, but nothing too special about this salad. 2. Campanelle di Mare: I did really like the taste of the lemon breadcrumbs, but the saffron bell-shaped pasta was a bit too overcooked. 3. Read many reviews that this is not the place to come if you're looking for a quiet dinner. So true! Nothing negative, just want to state the facts. When I arrived around 6:30pm, it was still relatively quiet. The low-beam, all wooden interior immediately gives off a very cozy and warm vibe. I do want to say that the tables are quite close together, so if you want some privacy regarding your conversations, Morandi might not be the spot. Definitely as the night went on, the noise level got louder and louder, and my friend and I found ourselves speaking louder too just to hear each other, despite being less than 1m across. For 2, we ordered the burrata to start, agnolotti di capesante and linguine alle vongole for mains. Though two pastas sound like a lot, the dishes were great in portion - the bowls are rather small but perfect for sharing so you can try multiple pastas. This is the week of "Is it better than Crispo?" As we try a ton of downtown Italian restaurants and wonder, are they better than the Italian spot Crispo on 14th? Which has now become our favorite. This one, along with Piccola Cucina in SoHo, our first two stops, have not topped Crispo. This one is solid and convenient with generous outdoor seating and delicious fluffy bread, but I feel like I don't need to come back for a while. The burrata is deliciously creamy, dotted with sweet pomegranates, but for $20 I still wouldn't get it again. The cacio e Pepe is creamy and the pasta thick and good, but not crazy flavorful or exciting, and a little dull after a while. I definitely wouldn't get the homemade gnocchi with porcini mushrooms again, which was way too mushroom heavy with the sauce, though the gnocchi itself were deliciously pillowy. read more
