My husband and I recently moved to the Central City area. Although we enjoy our quiet retreat in the mountains, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, we don't have very many restaurant options close by. It was a long week and I wanted to surprise my husband with a romantic night out. I had heard about the Chop House in the Monarch Casino. So, we decided to give it a try! From start to finish our experience at the Chop House Monarch Casino was nothing shy of amazing! The restaurant is beautifully appointed with a very modern and chic vibe. The staff is well dressed, professional, and very knowledgeable about the menu. Our server, Charles Sailoro was so welcoming and helped us navigate the menu pointing out his favorite dishes and providing recommendations for drink pairings. My husband and I ordered the Bison Carpaccio to start. It was absolutely delicious! A truly tasty and well balanced fusion of flavors and textures! For our main course, my husband ordered the bone-in apple cider pork chop and a side of whipped mashed potatoes. I ordered the Steak Diane that was prepared table side by John. He was so friendly and put on quite a show from the roaring flame created as he flambeed my steak to the stunning presentation of the plated food. Everything was wonderful! The staff was so nice and incredibly attentive! Daniel Hoctor, the Restaurant Manager, came by our table a few times to make sure that we were happy with our meals and had everything we needed. He was so kind, gracious, and told us how much he appreciated our patronage. The dessert menu looked so good! Unfortunately, we were too full to order dessert but Charles sent us home with two small chocolate macaroons and two slices of coffee cake to enjoy. We ate the macaroons before leaving the table. Soooo good! We had the coffee cake with our coffee the next morning. Such a nice treat! I can't say enough great things about this restaurant. If you are visiting Black Hawk or live in the area and are looking for a fancier, more intimate, place to celebrate a special occasion or enjoy a romantic dinner, look no further. Yesterday was our anniversary. We ate at Monarch Chophouse. Our evening started with Eric, our wonderful waiter who served us cocktails and delicious bread basket. Then Nicholas prepared the Caesar Salad at our table. Fun to watch our salad and dressing being made. My husband had the salmon and I had wild boar tenderloin with baked potato and Brussel sprout sides. The entire meal and presentation was superb! Eric blessed us with a fantastic dessert made at our table- pear guava sorbet. Watching that being made was a highlight! I will admit there is a wonderful ambiance and the service was good for the most part. I am not afraid to spend money if the meal is worth it. our food tasted alright but the restaurant clearly cuts corners on portions , which is pretty aggravating when you're spending 50 + bucks on a meal. My boyfriend's sea bass was a quarter of a filet. My scallops were literally cut in half to make it seem like there were more on my plate. Finally , we ordered two whiskey drinks that used woodford. We figured the drinks would be roughly 20-30 max considering no drinks on their menu exceeded that price. To our surprise when our bill came the drinks were 60 bucks per drink! We told our waitress that she should probably let customers know if a drink cost (that much!) more than the average. She proceeded to treat us like we weren't the type of clientele that belonged there because according to her "it's rude to assume a customer couldn't afford that ". I waited tables through Law School and I was pretty insulted that Monarch chophouse's policy is to deliberately not inform a customer of an up charge, especially one of that magnitude. This place used to be the best. We went at least once a week. But then casino management started prioritizing the needs of the gamblers over the people that wanted great food. I'm just going to be honest here, this place is hyped up way too much for the quality of the food. The experience is fancy that's for sure, light up menus, warm scented hand towels to wipe your hands, palate cleansers between dishes, but the crab was cold, scallops fishy, the steak was over smoked and side dishes were all bleh. The server Jason was obnoxious, obviously trying to up-sale anything he can (which I get that's his job) but then was passively rude if we didn't want it. Our an entire table felt like he was annoyed with us. It was really discouraging for the entire evening and took away from the dining experience as a whole. I had originally made a reservation for 14 for my friends birthday. I called and changed it to 7 people well in advanced (the day before) to getting to the restaurant and they told me no problem when I spoke to them over the phone. At the very end of our meal they decided to tell us that it was $25 per person that didn't show up for the original reservation trying to make us pay 7×25 for the absent people. When I called and they should of let us know this policy and we would of never came in the first place. This restaurant is just a scam. The chef was voted top chef in Colorado and I really can't understand why. The asparagus was undercooked, award winning fingerlings so Smokey you couldn't even eat them. Not to mention none of the entrees come with sides. Everything is an up charge. This is the perfect example of just putting a high price tag on something and dumb people think it's good. The restaurant is located on the fourth floor of the casino and has a beautiful lobby entrance. The restaurant itself has a very sleek, modern, romantic vibe and the dining room is very open. Our booth was private and the dining area was quiet enough where you could carry on a conversation. The menus are illuminated which is a very sexy touch. The only downside to the menu was there were no oysters. Every steakhouse my boyfriend and I have frequented, they always have oysters. We started with the prawn cocktail which entailed four large shrimp over shredded vegetables. We also had the crab cakes which were slightly smaller than what I'm used to but they were excellent. The steak options were above par, offering prime grades. The upgrades were fairly priced as well, along with a nice array of a la carte side options. We both ordered filets with accompaniments, oscar and fluffed gorgonzola mousse. We also shared a side of lobster truffle mac and cheese. The steaks came out beautiful and the lobster mac... BEST I've ever had. Like I said, we frequent steakhouses everywhere we go. The truffle was so rich, and the lobster was plentiful. Huge, meaty, pieces of Maine lobster. We were celebrating my friend's bachelorette party and made reservations at this restaurant for dinner. We were told that the table is not ready for the reserved time. I think we got a table an hour later if not longer. We sat at this restaurant for 2 hours until our food finally came out. I was watching other tables that arrived way later after us receiving their dinner. Even tho it was 12 of us, most didn't order food. Some of the people shared food, but everyone ordered a drink or two. I think we got crappy service because not everyone ordered and because we needed split checks. The waiter was extremely rude to the bachelorette. It was 12 of us and this restaurant was so unorganized. I expect top service from this type of restaurant and we didn't get it. I don't even know where to start. We were treated very poorly. They said they don't have French onion soup 30 minutes after they took the order. No one ever once came up to me to see if my streak was good or to ask how everything was. My wine glass was empty and no one was around. Once they came to clear the plates I had to ask for another glass of wine which I never received. Our table wasn't set for the correct amount of people when we arrived. Once we were seated, one of the waitresses sat down a few plates topped with napkins and silverware all on one pile and left. Uhm, excuse me? We are in an upscale high end steakhouse and you want us to pass along dish-ware across the table so we can set it up ourselves? This is your job. Once the food came out after they wasted 3 hours of our night it was actually delicious. Not going to lie, the food was great. Great job to the kitchen. But the front of the house was a disaster. When they first opened, this place was amazing. The porterhouse was delicious. Not sure but i think they got a new chef, who is no where near as good. The steaks are not as good of quality as they used to be. They took several of the really good items off the menu (risotto, scallops, porterhouse, coffee cake), and the manager always has an attitude. If it wasn't for Tyler at the bar, who is fantastic, we probably wouldn't even bother anymore. Wish there was a decent steakhouse in Blackhawk. They just need to do better. The steak cuts like butter, the French Onion soup is amazing, and everything that everyone else orders gets rave reviews from them as well. 5 star restaurant if you want to feel like a movie star on a special occasion this is the place to go. From the manager to our 5 star server we were treated like Royalty. We were greeted wth heated hand clothes before dinner, not to mention the drinks were amazing 5 star bar. By the way you have to try the shoes Manhatten they literally bring it in a cage that has smoke coming out of it. We had Filet Minon to the T-bone booth melted in our mouth. The asparagus was dipped in a cause to die for, not to mention the baked potato loaded with the best chunked bacon you will EVER have. As we were waiting for our Creme Brule they offered us a glass of raspberry champagne with a blueberry in it, what a combination. The manager last no some unturned by sending us off with coffee cakes in the morning an chocolate balls filled with creme.
