Small Beef Brisket on White Rice
    Raien L.

I walked passed Modern Wok in one of the PATH's many food courts. There was a huge line up so I figured I'll try on a Friday when the PATH is quieter. I ended up getting a small Beef Brisket with White Rice for under $10. They have different options like 1 protein + base or 2 proteins + base etc. They have food in trays so you can see what they have available and you tell them your order. Somethings cost extra like Beef Brisket for like a dollar more. It's a good option if you're craving Chinese food and don't want to spend too much on lunch. E-fu noodles with fish and BBQ pork

Modern Wok is one of the only non-chain Chinese restaurants that you can visit in PATH. There's always an extremely long line up of hungry people waiting for their fix of Cantonese lunch, so arrive early if you don't like waiting. You can pick one of their specials (on the board), or make your own combo with a base and some of the dishes that they have on display. Either way, it'll be cheap regardless which is a big positive. I've ordered twice from here, and tried a number of their dishes. Some of their dishes, like the steamed fish and eggplant were cooked well and tasted nice and light. Their bases were also good, albeit quite oily. Both the e-fu noodles and the fried rice went well with their hot sauces and chili oil. Their meats were alright, but there was one recurring theme with them, and its how much fat they leave on their meat dishes when served. I've tried both their BBQ pork and their braised beef and they were both ridiculously fatty in an unpleasant way. One of the pieces of BBQ pork was almost entirely made out of fat, and that was gross. Modern Wok is just okay when it comes to Chinese food. There are much better options if you're willing to go further (like in Chinatown), but it's not a bad lunch option if you're stuck in the financial district. Just don't get their BBQ pork or braised beef, unless you like fat.

Newly renovated with a nice refresh look! It reopened today and treated their customers with some tasty roasted pork. This is in a smaller food court in the path that is a bit hidden but it's pretty well known among the Asian community. It looks like the same people are running the place and similar dishes. If you're looking for traditional Chinese dishes in the downtown financial district like BBQ duck, BBQ pork, Hannai Chicken, Beef Brisket, Salt & Pepper Pork Chops, Ma Po Tofu, Eggplant, etc, then this is the place. There's definitely a big selection of dishes and some of their dishes change daily. My favourite dish is the "Drooling/Mouthwatering Chicken in Chili sauce" - the name sounds funny when you translate it from Chinese....I love this dish! Unfortunately they didn't have this dish today. Price wise, it's not the cheapest, but it's pretty reasonable for what you get. For about $9, you can choose any 2 items with rice. The place gets really busy at around 12:30pm with a long lineup so if you want to avoid the lineup, try coming either just before 12pm or after 1pm.

This restaurant is probably one of the best restaurants in the PATH food court. You will always see a long lineup in front of this place during lunchtime. What I like: the taste, reasonably priced, variety What I don't like: small portion, long wait time, cash only The food here is better quality than average Chinese food court place. However, this place is very busy and the lineup does not get shorter during 1-hour lunchtime from 12-1. You better to know what to order beforehand. I ordered a combo of 2 dishes with beef and tofu on fried rice. Both dishes taste pretty good. I recommend this place to grab lunch in the area. However, try to avoid lunchtime.

    Hoi Nam (Vietnamese) Chicken

I kept hearing people talking about their restaurant and last week I finally found it at the PATH and decided to try it out. I normally don't do food court reviews but this is an exception, I am impress. Modern wok looks like any other food court restaurant but when you see the long lineup you know there is something special about this place. First of all, the service was incredibly fast, the long line scared me initiallt, but I had only waited about 5 mins to get to my order. They have a gigantic selection of food items, so many trays that they had to pile on top of each other. I ended up getting the hoi nam (vietnamese) chicken, it was only 6.99. The chicken was tender and juicy and the rice, mixed with chicken fat/juice, was very flavourful. It tasted like something that I could get from a real restaurant. Yes I admit this place probably doesn't deserve 5 stars on the food alone, but for a food court Chinese restaurant, Modern Wok is substantially better than the chain restaurants. Modern Wok is cheaper, offers more authetic Chinese food, and best of all, it tastes better.

Steamed fish and napa cabbage with vermicelli over plain jasmine rice - $6.75 after tax!

I'm in the middle of studying for an industry exam and I don't take stress well. The best antidote is comfort food, and of the many different kinds, Chinese Mom Comfort Food is one of the most effective. Except my Chinese mom is a 50min subway+20min car ride away from me, and I'm too prissy to get my hands dirty, especially when I'm studying. What to do? In a situation like this, I'd go to Chinatown, but I work in the financial district so it's not an option for lunch. Usually, I'd just get kimchi fried rice at Ho Ga or Manchu Wok at Metro Centre (it's not authentic but it's good enough in a pinch). I finally stopped by Modern Wok today and decided to give it a try. No idea what was stopping me, especially since the always long lines speak for themselves, but there I was. I. COULD. CRY. (of happiness) The friendly person behind the counter walked me through how to order (small box comes with 2 items unless you get fried rice/noodles, then it's 1 item) and quickly gave me a rundown of what was available. I arrived at about 12:30pm and many of the pans were already emptyish, though more food was always being brought out from the kitchen. I was super skeptical when I was told that the huge pan of beige lumps was steamed fish, but I'm a sucker for any kind of fish, so I chose it, along with stir-fried napa cabbage with vermicelli, over plain jasmine rice. It came to $6.75 after tax - so the price increased, but it's still very reasonable, especially for the financial district. The fish was awesome. I mean, it's not the same as home-made, or restaurant-quality, and it certainly looks different because they're fish chunks as opposed to a whole fish, but it was tasty! It totally hit the spot. Steamed fish is one of my favourite foods in the whole, wide world. I liked that it was boneless & skinless, I liked that they were generous with the amount, I liked that it wasn't fishy at all, I liked that it was seasoned just right, and I loved how I could shovel huge hunks of fish into my mouth, without getting poked and without choking. The napa cabbage was pretty good. It was cooked properly and while it wasn't exactly what I expected (there was Chinese preserved sausage in it as opposed to dried shrimp), it was good. The vermicelli was kind of over-cooked, but it's to be expected when it's been sitting in its own juice under a heat lamp. The amount of rice was appropriate, and cooked a little on the softer side (which is great compared to Manchu Wok, where the rice is always rock hard). I also really appreciated that the person helping me added a nice, big spoonful of green onion/ginger sauce to my fish. I am full, it was a very reasonable price, the food quality was much better than most Path eateries nearby, and my stress-frizzled psyche is soothed (at least temporarily). I'm a fan!

    Stir Fried Vegetables with Fishcakes

Modern Wok is an authentic Chinese fast food restaurant located inside a food court in the PATH near the St. Andrew station (the food court is directly across from SunLife financial). I love coming here for a quick lunch once or twice a week, $6.50 for a small rice with 2 toppings is pretty much one of the cheapest legit and filling meal you can find in the PATH financial district area. They have a large selections of standard toppings everyday with some daily special toppings which they do not make as much and it's more of a first come first serve style. As a Chinese from Hong Kong, I think it's more convincing when I tell you how good the food taste and how authentic they truly are! It's not those typical Manchu Wok or chain Chinese fast food restaurants where they always have sweet and sour chicken balls. If you ask me to recommend two toppings on rice, i personally like to have one topping with sauce and the other topping a little drier. My typical (if they have) toppings are Tofu Fish (or Eggplant with meat) and Stir Fried Fishcake vegetables on a small box of white rice. As I have mentioned before, for only $6.50, you cannot go wrong with it! (A burger king meal is WELL over $6.50!! and a salad next door which i also reviewed will cost you $10!!) I would also like to mention they occasionally have soup of the day, if you are a very traditional Chinese and is used to having a soup for most of the meals, I do highly recommend paying an additional $2-$3 for the soup of the day (yes it's legit authentic Chinese soup as well!!) Overall 4/5, 1 point off because not all the toppings taste as great, but overall a must try for all downtown workers who want some legit Chinese food around the area.

Foods are tasty. I love their noodle soup, the portion is quite plenty for $10! The only negative side is long line up at 11.45.

We tried several of their noodle soups, and each one had its own charm. The house special noodles came loaded with toppings like beef tendon, brisket, wontons, offal, and squid balls, so every bite felt hearty and satisfying. The broth was especially comforting with the noodles. The wonton noodles were a little lighter, but still very good. The shrimp wontons were huge, with a nice crisp bite to the shrimp, and the whole bowl felt especially soothing after a late night. The offal noodles were also impressive, with a very generous portion of offal and a fragrant touch of garlic oil that brought everything together. The four-ball noodle soup is a great choice if you are not sure what to order, since you get to try fish balls, squid balls, beef tendon balls, and sliced fish all in one bowl. My favorite dish of the night was definitely the fried dumplings. They were crispy on the outside, tender and juicy inside, and soaked up that savory house sauce so well. Easily some of the best fried dumplings I've had. We also tried the chives and pork blood, which is a must-order for anyone who enjoys pork blood dishes. There was no unpleasant smell at all, and the seasoning with chives was just right. To drink, the iced lemon tea and lemonade were simple but refreshing, and paired perfectly with the meal. Overall, this is a place I would gladly come back to when I want something filling, flavorful, and affordable.

The posters outside caught my eye, and I decided to come back with a group of three friends to try it out. We came a bit late around 8 PM, and most of the fish were already sold out except the original. We ended up ordering the Signature Spicy Grilled BBQ Fish ($40), a whole fish served bubbling hot with three toppings (potatoes, spam, and lotus root). You can choose between catfish and turbot, we chose the turbot fish. It looked extremely spicy, but the spice level was actually perfect. It was a bit on the oily side, but pairing it with rice balanced it out nicely. The fish was very tender and buttery, everything tasted amazing! We also ordered the Stir-Fried Egg with Tomato. The eggs were soft, the tomato sauce was rich. Not to mention the portion size was huge, we even had leftovers after eating until we were full. The restaurant itself was spacious, clean, and had plenty of seating. I think they were doing some sort of promotion so they gave us a $25 off coupon, though it expired pretty quickly so we didn't get to use it. I'd definitely come back for that grilled fish.

A few of their dishes come out on a sizzling plate with flames underneath. They are still in soft-opening mode with several specials. You can see the menus via a QR code. The Hunan cuisine is listed as "Hunan Noodles" and the Szechuan cuisine is listed as "Chopfire Menu". The Szechuan dishes are listed with 1 to 3 chilies representing the spiciness. If you can't handle spicy, then avoid eating the chili pieces and you might "survive". The restaurant decided to minimize their food offerings so that they can focus on refining their dishes in terms of quality and taste, including from customer feedback. We ordered the following: 1. Signature Spicy Grilled BBQ Fish ($39.95). 2. Home Stir Fried Beef ($21.95). 3. Bullfrog with Baby Ginger ($19.95). 4. Stir-Fried Cauliflower with Preserved Pork ($15.95). 5. Drunk Oolong (charcoal roasted oolong tea base) x 2 ($5.95 x 2). 6. Lemon Taro Balls ($7.95). We also saw the following: 7. Stir-Fried Sliced Pork with Green Pepper Noodle Soup ($9.99). First 10 customers each day, only pays $1.00. 8. Ink Painting Cocktail ($5.95). The Signature Spicy Grilled BBQ Fish came out on a huge sizzling platter. The BBQ Fish, a Turbot Fish, was very fresh and flaky, easily coming off the bone. There is no head attached like at typical Chinese restaurants but it would not have fit in the platter. The platter had a delicious sauce (soupy consistency and not sweet), luncheon meat slices, lotus root slices, and two other vegetables, along with chili pieces. The entire dish tasted great together with the various flavours. The menu listed it as 2-chili spicy but I could handle it by avoiding the chili pieces. The Home Stir Fried Beef is tender. It is listed as 3-chili but I could handle it by avoiding the chili pieces. The Bullfrog with Baby Ginger has the bullfrog cut up in little pieces; no you don't see a whole frog! The meat was actually good but most pieces have bones in it, so it takes time to eat it carefully. There was ginger slices in it but it, but we thought the slices were quite large! The Stir-Fried Cauliflower with Preserved Pork was very delicious! It came in a sizzling plate. The Cauliflower was flavourful and was not crunchy and not too soft. I've never had preserved pork slices before; it was quite good, not as salty as Chinese preserved vegetables. The Drunk Oolong has comes in a small bowl a with gin and ice. On the side, they include pieces of the charcoal roasted oolong tea leaves so you can smell it; quite a good smell indeed. You can also order it without the gin, which is what I ordered for mine (since I don't drink alcohol). It was such a nice drink! The Lemon Taro Balls dessert was pretty. In the centre was a slice of lemon. The customer service was good. There is plenty of indoor table and counter seating, including a small private room at the back. There is also an outdoor patio during warmer weather. There is pop music playing in the background. There is no free WiFi. The restaurant is wheelchair accessible, but there is no door-open button. There are two gender-neutral washrooms downstairs, so they are not wheelchair accessible. There is paid neighbourhood street parking. Review 2025-026

Fresh Mango, Coconut, Glutinous Rice Roll: nice fresh dessert. Our favourite. Frozen xiao long bao with chocolate and nut: Tastes like a mochi. Not bad. Dragonball Zen - fun name. Delicious drink. Jasmine Dragon Ball Infused Tanqueray Gin / Peach Liquor Lime / Rose Water / Mint / Seltzer Over $200 for this meal before tip. It's premium an debatable if with it. Will be back but just occasionally.
