Called last week to schedule an apt to expose and empty our septic tank. I was told that they had an apt Tuesday, June 30 between 12-4. I accepted that apt and received a call today from tech Eric at 10:19 am asking if he could come early. I returned his phone call and told him I could have someone meet him there at 11:00 am. He arrived at 11:35 am and from the start was annoyed that he had to expose the septic tank. He explained that it was a higher cost to for him to dig in order to expose the tanks. Due to a physical disability we were not able to dig the area to expose the dirt ourself at this time and told him so. It was very clear that he was not happy that he had to dig alone in order to expose the tank. Once the tank was emptied and he began to backfill the dirt the lid for the tank broke. It was 2:40 pm. I as the homeowner offered to go to his shop to get it because he was going to leave it open until "someone else from his company was in the area again". I told him this wasn't an option since we have dogs and the whole is approx' 3' deep and the dirt is on my grass. He then called his office and they said they would bring one to him. He stood aside and waited for approx. 30 minutes before a second person arrived with the lid and then it was placed on the tank and the back fill was then completed. I was charged for the lid (that is fine) and his time to stand by and do nothing (this is not okay). Then they completed the paperwork and left the job. Didn't clean up the area and left my yard and driveway looking like this. Also not okay. Can't say I would recommend or call back. read more

We've used messenger in the past and usually have good service. Had our tank pumped a few months back and the guy who came out seemed annoyed with us. We have some issues with ground water and leach fields when it rains hard and he seemed as though he didn't want to be there and was very short. He opened up towards the end but was uncomfortable at the beginning. Never had issues in the past so maybe it was just a bad day.?? read more

Decided to try a new septic service this time, no reason just for variety. I was impressed with the professionalism of the front office Cathy, and the professional service that Brad (the pumper) offered. I would say I could take off maybe half a star because they did show up approximately an hour before they said they would but hey I'm not going to take off a whole star for that. Brad contacted me told me he was coming, I wasn't able to make it to the property, but explained to him what I wanted and the condition of the septic tank. I trusted that Brad could handle the job without me there. After the service he called me and told me everything was OK, and that perhaps I could increase my pumping frequency slightly. He also told me there were a bunch of wet wipes in the septic tank, so I can talk to the tenants about it. No wet wipes please and don't poor grease down the drain. I was referred to Modern Septic after the company I had selected to pump my septic tank had a truck breakdown. Fortunately, Modern Septic was able to get out to my place within a day after I called. The tech -- Chuck -- arrived right on time, and he did an awesome job. This is the first time I've owned a house with a septic tank, and it's all been quite an education. I watched Chuck as he worked on the tank, and he explained how everything worked. I was kind of scared because, when we bought the house a couple of months ago, we learned that the previous owner hadn't had the tank pumped in 12 years. The good news is that the tank was in good shape and functioning as it should. When Chuck was done, everything was spic and span, and our tank was ready to go for another 4 years. We bought a home last month with septic. These guys have been servicing this system for 30 years. They gave us a great inspection, photos of past work, they kept records to make it easier to get the permits for our new room addition. They shared everything they had and followed up after every phone call I made to them. They also referred us to a local expert who drew our new system for submission to the county. They have maintained this system for 30 years so far. We plan to use them for the next 30 years. Because of the other good reviews, my realtor chose Modern Septic to do an inspection and cleaning on the septic tank for the sale of my home. The scheduled promptly and came on time on the day choose. Upon uncovering the tank lid, I was informed that the lid to the main tank was stuck and would probably need to be broken (made of concrete) to get it off. I understood that sometimes things like this happen, and asked if they had a replacement lid. The service person indicated that they probably had one in the "yard" and should cost around $50 but could not be sure as he didn't set prices. I told him that was no problem and to go a head. After cleaning the tank and inspecting it, he stated that there was a knock out cover missing on an unused outlet and that would need to be repaired as well as getting a new lid. I asked him about the repairs and he stated that someone would get back to me in about 2-3 business days. I then expressed my concern about an open septic tank in my yard and he said that we just put a trash can over it, which he did take on of my garbage cans and put it over the hole and then left. I figured that would be ok, it would only be a couple of days until it got fixed and sealed back up so no big deal. Well, after 2 days, I got an email with a bill for $740.00 and a list of other companies that could possibly conduct repairs. I called right away and asked what was going on. I was told that they don't conduct repairs, only inspections and cleanings. I expressed my concern that I was never told any of this and now I had an open cesspool in my yard with no estimated time of repair. I was told that the service person should have put plywood over the hole, which he did not, and that they would come right back out to do that. They never did. I had to contact a 3rd party to repair the tank that they damaged, replace the lid that they broke and could not replace and to conduct the knock out repair that the inspection found. Overall, this company provided poor service, communications and poor expectations of work from the start. I would not recommend using this company for any reason because of their bad customer service, non existent conversations about actual services provided and a complete disconnect between what the service person did and what was expected. read more

I have used Modern Septic since I moved into my house in 1993. Every three or four years they come out and pump my tank, and have never had any problems. The last time the came they told me my tank was corroding and needed to be fixed, so last week I had them come out and do the work on it after they pumped it. They had estimated it would take 5 or 6 hours and gave me a quote based on that estimate. In reality, the tank was corroded more than they thought and it took at least 10 man-hours to fix it right. They called me today and told me they were only going to charge me based on the original estimate since neither they nor I knew how bad my tank was. I was prepared to pay for the 10-hours; I saw what the guys had to go through to fix it. I didn't ask them to discount the hours, they just did the right thing and charged based on the original estimate. Not many companies give that kind of service these days. I don't Yelp often, but Modern Septic deserves 10 stars in my book. read more

Since 2004, we have had our septic tank serviced twice; both times by Modern Septic. Once the homeowner has located and exposed the septic tank "hatches" this service is pretty straightforward... suction out the contents and rinse the sludge out of the bottom. Modern offers a small variety of services as the first time I needed assistance in locating our hatches (didn't know there were two) and I needed to replace a severely cracked "hatch". We try to support the smaller companies in East Co. SD. In each instance, we found Modern's staff to be polite and professional. On a happy note, our septic is still in good shape and we'll be seeing Modern again in 5-years. read more

Very efficient office customer service, records were correct and retrieved promptly. Service was on time, friendly techs, fast clean service leaving the ground as found. We were in the process of selling a property and needed to have the septic inspected. We went with Modern Septic as according to them they had done the previous inspection in 2010. First they had to locate the tank as we had no idea where it was. Once located, they uncovered the lids, and that is where I feel the process should have ended. They will not certify the tanks because the tank tops are deformed and they cannot properly secure the lids. Instead, they did the pump ($495) and the inspection ($150) and the charge to locate ($50), which should have been a total $695, but for some reason only charged me $620. That said, I feel as if the process should have stopped if they were not going to certify the tank as now we are getting estimates from companies to replace the tank for over $4,000, and they all want to pump it too. I was on site at the time of the inspection, the guy who did the job sis not point out the problem until he was done. I wasted $620. I would have gladly paid the lid location fee and whatever charge for uncovering the lids, it is the $495 that is upsetting. read more
