These engines are notorious for eating away at the timing chain guides producing a whining noise, I took my vehicle to seven different repair shops. I highly recommend Modern Engines for having your engine rebuilt. I have a 2005 Chevy SSR and unfortunately it stopped on the 101 fwy on a Tue. and had AAA take it there. I was given a time line of 7 to 10 days by Vahan and the following Tue. he called and told me it was ready for pick-up I couldn't have gotten better service. My local mechanic told me it could take over a month to have the engine rebuilt and I would be better off finding a rebuilt engine. I didn't mean it and I've been going back-and-forth to the shop for a year trying to get my jeep fixed. I gave these guys a ton of money and they never fix the job. Believe the bad reviews. They are my experience ONE HUNDRED PERCENT. I didn't do my research on them and got burned -- BIG TIME. Don't make the same mistake I did. Go anywhere else. Excuses, excuses, excuses. (They are excellent at those.) Promises that my car would be done come and go. Weeks and weeks go by. But they have your money, so you're stuck. The rebuild quality is terrible. Had major issues in the first week back. And you better hope they get it right the first time (they won't) because the warranty is worthless. They will take the car back and just sit on it, doing nothing for weeks. The warranty itself (which they don't show you until after you pay in full) is a total get out of jail free card for them. Exceptions for EVERYTHING. I had a lawyer review the warranty and he burst out laughing several times. He said it's "a gumbo of legalese that looks like it was written by a 7th grader." Its purpose is to just scare you into not suing them. But it's all unenforceable nonsense. There are way too many bad reviews citing the same shady behavior on MANY different sites for it to be a coincidence. As they say -- once is a mistake, twice is a coincidence, three times is how they do business. Go anywhere else. Honest mechanics do not do things like this. read more

I highly recommended Modern Engine for machine work. I had to get a valve job done on my B20Z head for a restoration project I have going on for my 1990 Honda CRX Si. Hector helped me out over the phone and quoted me a very reasonable price for the job. We bonded over the CRX platform and he told me of the adventures he had in his when he owned one. Gotta love the car community for that. As for the work, the valve job included hot tanking, sandblasting and resurfacing of the head. The head had bits and pieces of old headgasket on the intake side when I gave it to them and it came back like new. The job took 3 days, but I couldn't be happier with the results. Being a novice at rebuilding an FZJ80 engine for my Lexus LX450, Hector & Vahan provided excellent service, technical tips, and advice. They sold me parts and gasket kits that I needed at excellent prices. They performed a complete rebuild of my cylinder head. This service was amazing. They cleaned and polished my dual overhead cams. Clean, lapped, machined, the valves, lifters, rockers with precision. In addition, they cleaned, decked, honed, my engine block. After experiencing their cleaning service and brought all parts in for cleaning. The cleaning service is outstanding. In addition, they were very sensitive as to the surfaces that needed to be protected and masked where is was needed. Working with Hector and Vahan felt like and extended team on my project. I'm sold on this company and will filter all my repairs and rebuild through them. read more

First impression: Five stars! Knowledgable, responsible, and honorable. The guys at Modern Engine have been true to their word so far. I had a classic 1970s Cadillac v8 500 rebuilt with them (a nice test of their skills, since the engine could hardly be considered modern). They also installed an aftermarket camshaft for me, which didn't phase them in the slightest. I had the engine installed by a separate shop because that's where AAA originally towed the vehicle. After a few miles test driving the newly rebuilt engine, we experienced an internal knocking. The installer advised I remove the engine and bring it back to rebuilder, so I brought the engine back to Modern Engine towards the end of business hours (5pm), they stayed open past 5pm to receive it, and told me they'd let me know their diagnosis the following day. Sure enough, I got a call from them the next day saying that I had some squeaked bearings, and Vahan asked me to bring in my oil pan and invited me in to see the internal state of the engine. Sure enough, there was some major damage to the pistons, and there will need to be some significant work to get the vehicle back on the road. Vahan took me through all the possible causes of the issue, and expressed his desire to "ensure this doesn't happen again." He also said "don't worry, we built it and we will fix it." I'd recommend having them do the install for you if they do your rebuild, so that they can oversee the process from beginning to end. I believe they will stand behind their work and their warrantee. They certainly know their stuff, and looks like they have a huge volume of engines coming in and out, which suggests you can count on Modern Engine for their expertise or experience. You've got to be wary of Yelp reviews for mechanics, good and bad: sometimes shops seed their yelp pages with positive reviews, other times, it's only the unhappy customers you hear from. I will update this review once the work is done and I get my vehicle back on the road and running, but as of now, I'd say despite the haters, this shop has been dependable, fair, and willing to work with me to ensure a pleasant customer experience. read more

Let me preference this by saying my first encounter with Modern Engine and Armond, dates back to February/2021. My daughter's BMW wasn't even a year old, we bought it new-used and it had a warranty which also came w/the referral of Modern Engine. Cool no problem, yet the only thing was parts at that time were so hard to come by that it took Armond nearly 4 months to repair my vehicle. Although not entirely on him, the push and pull in getting her car repair was more than a notion. But admittedly, Armond was BEYOND patient w/me and did above and beyond to finally get our repaired in time for my daughter's then high school graduation. During that time, and because of the care and service he provided Armond is the only one I trust to repair my family's cars now. He's since then done 2 oil changes, repaired lights, done a complete tune up and most recently, handled/repaired a ding in my daughter's car door. Because we live in the View Park-Windsor Hills area, Armond will either open early or stay late in order for me or my daughter to get to him, just to help us avoid traffic. If getting what you pay for is a person and/or shop than Modern Engine is most certainly worth EVERY DIME AND DOLLAR! I leaving this lengthy review to hopefully encourage people to not judge a book by it's cover or previous negative reviews and give Armond and Modern Engine a real shot. **First of all I want to put a disclosure that I did not deal with modern engine personality for my 89 Ford Bronco. I took my truck to world famous 4x4 and they went through modern engine. With that being said I feel confident in my review. Modern engine Installed a rebuilt long block in my truck back in july of 2018. I began having problems when I picked up my truck from world famous 4x4 Immediately. My truck has less the 1000 miles on the new engine and I have had to replace the waterpump that modern engine installed( when asked what brand, armond from modern engine was unable to even tell me) . Most recently I have had to replace both valve cover gaskets because of the paper thin gaskets are leaking a ton of oil. I decided to give modern engine a call at this time to see what could be done. I was told gaskets only have a 90 day warranty and that they used the best gaskets available...I left a negative review at that time, and was called back by Armond almost immediately. I appreciate him calling to see if anything could be done to get me to take down my negative review. I discussed the situation that world famous 4x4 told me that modern engine installed the new engine and components to which he disagreed, but did not have proof at the time. I offered to give my vin number right there to look it up and he declined and wanted to speak to world famous 4x4 a out it... We spoke a day later and he admitted to doing all the work and asked me for my vin number in order for him to look it up and that he would be willing to fix it for me but I would have to wait until he got back in town, or I could come pick up a replacement gasket from the for free. .. THIS IS WHERE I LOST ALL TRUST... I had to take world famous 4x4 to court due to their unethical buisness practices and I believe modern engine is just another piece in that. I believe Armond and the team at modern engine are more concerned with a bad review than actually doing the work correctly in the first place. The quality of work performed by this business is low and they cheat you on parts replacement. They count on the fact that %99 of people have no clue about what it takes to rebuild an engine. They were unlucky in the sense that I happen to be in that %1 category whereby I actually verified their work after the rebuild by placing the engine on a stand and performing a detailed inspection. I discovered the following: 1- Did not install water pump gasket! 2- Did not install timing chain cover gasket! 3- Installed the thermostat upside-down! 4- filled the radiator with plain water, not coolant! 5- Did not install exhaust manifold gaskets! 6- Did not reinstall water pump divider plate 7- Did not install water pump sleeves. 8- Lost/misplaced heat shield. 9- Installed fuel filter in the wrong direction. 10- Did not install carburetor to manifold gasket. 11- Did not install clip required for securing throttle cable to the carburetor. 12- Installed the wrong AC, water pump, and alternator pulley. I had to buy the correct one from ebay as the one they installed was for a car without AC. All of these are serious violations of the basics of their business which is to rebuild engines. The above omissions and/or errors are inexcusable. Also, not putting back the correct parts that were on the car and replacing it with whatever is just outrageous.Think three-times before trusting this establishment to rebuild the engine of your vehicle. read more

THIS PLACE WAS A NIGHTMARE!! Car over heated, brought it in... two weeks later they call and tell me it's ready. I leave work mid day and head over to pick it up. Car is still being test driven when i get there. THEN they tell me, after i left work to get my car, that they need to sort some more things out and its not ready to be released. WTF! Thats jus the beginning! They tell me itll be ready later that day or the next morning.. next morning comes.. no call. I give them untill noon before i call them. They then tell me the car isnt ready still and that i will get a call as soon as they know when itll be ready. NO CALL FOR ANOTHER WEEK! After a week i call them and ask them whats going on. They tell me some story about the car misfiring now and they dont know why. NOTE: the car had never misfired prior to bring it in. So they say they will need to keep the car untill they figure it out OR... get this... they say "our work is done and this is a new problem so if you like we can release the car to you and you can have someone else fix this misfire issue" .............. jus let that sink in. I say fuck no you broke my car you have to fix it. They end up replacing a cylinder that takes them 2.5 weeks to order. Finally the car is ready. I pick it up and as im hopping on the freeway what happens?? The car jsu wont go past 3500 rpm.... Take it back. 3 more weeks. They five it back... No check enghine light on runs fine for a few days, then boom, misfire, check engine light back on. At this point imdone with them doing more and more dammage to my car that i take it somwewhere else and pay more money. Im taking them to small claims court to pay for the additional work. You get what you pay for is the lesson here i think. DONT DO IT!!! read more

What a huge mistake i made using this company. My truck mechanic pulled my 5.7L chevy engine and took it to them (simple, LS 350 - any engine guy on earth can rebuild one blindfolded). Got engine back, my truck mech reinstalled engine, and he tells me it's no good. Took truck +engine back to Modern Engine. A week later - nothing. Call them, they say "Motor is bad, but we don't have anyone who can pull the motor - get your truck out of here and get someone to pull it." My poor, old truck mechanic is beside himself - meanwhile i am out my dumptruck which is costing me 1000s. These guys are really bad at what they do, and really bad at running a business. read more

I'm pleased to say that my experience with Modern Engine has been a good one. I was in need of a new long block for a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 truck. Hector quoted me a fair price over the phone and gave me an estimate of the time needed for the repair. I brought the truck in and they started the work the next day. I would never have anybody go to this place to have their engine repair or their transmission.The man told me after he repaired my engine he told me that I've seen this happen before it'll go away. The problem was that he never had all of the vacuum lines hooked up let alone the belts in the proper positions. They also did my transmission at the same time and have had nothing but problems with the transmission. I took it back to them several different times they've had it for months and never fixed it. NEW GM 3400 ENGINE, OLD PCV Valve. I wanted to wait a few years before giving a rating to see how my engine rebuilt held up. I was semi-satisfied until I pulled my spark plugs because of a misfire code on July 22, 2018. I thought tune up time. I began to take things apart for the tune up and saw a little sludge on the oil cap. I checked a spark plug and found oil on the threads. Removed the PCV Valve and found sludge. My heart began beating super fast. NOPE! Not a tune up. Worse. Drained the oil and found coolant mixed in and pulled all the spark plugs and found oil and corrosion build up on 4 plugs. YEP, gasket and all seals are gone AGAIN. I hope the moving parts are fine. I remember when going over the parts to be replaced, Vahan wanted to replace a new water pump I put in just a month before taking my car to them. They replaced every expensive part when the work was done but did not replace a $10 PCV Valve and Grommet. They replaced the PCV Hose but not the Valve and Grommet. The combustion build up in the engine from a clogged PCV Valve was the cause of a false MAF Sensor code and the erratic idling I told Vahan about when I got my car back after the rebuild, not the IAC Valve, which led to the condensation in my engine and pressure on my seals. The pressure build up had to escape somewhere. Yeah, through the seals and gaskets. Now I need all new seals and gaskets AGAIN. Polite people. Went the extra mile to tow my car long distance for cheap and stayed opened late until I arrived because I live pretty far. I trusted their work. It was just that one inexpensive missed step that ruined it all. I may have lost my car I had for 13 years because I can't afford the expensive work that it needs AGAIN and I fear my warranty has expired but I will call them to let them know and go from there. If only I had a garage, I would do the work mydamnself. Who doesn't replace a $10 PCV Valve when rebuilding an engine? MODERN ENGINE, that's who. read more

I have an extended warranty for my vehicle through Modern Engine. I'm going to be using such warranty today and I couldn't be happier with Modern Engine's staff customer service. I had a few problems with my warranty since the dealer who I purchased my vehicle from was very irresponsible and did not follow through with a paperwork deadline. After speaking with Modern Engine staff (Janet, Andrea and Armen) they were very professional and took care of my paperwork right away. The attention to detail and their concern for my situation gives me the assurance that I will get exceptional service even after my warranty expires in three years. I highly recommend Modern Engine to all those that are in need of extended warranty when purchasing a used vehicle. Update after dropping of my vehicle: I just dropped off my vehicle and Modern Engine staff continued their excellent service. I was being charged an extra $10 by J&J Towing just to use my Visa card to pay $30 for three mile of overage. I was very lucky that Armen was next to me...he came to the rescue and let me borrow $30 cash so that I won't have to pay the $10 for using my credit card. I was actually planning to pay the $10 charge since I did not have any cash with me. I was never told regarding the $10 extra charge for using a credit card.
