3/5. Walt's Transmission & Auto let me down. Perhaps my expectations were a bit high. The reviews on Google and Yelp were great. The encouragement to visit the shop and ask about the discounts listed on the welcoming, so I visited Walt. Unfortunately, I wish I'd trusted my gut and taken my Toyota Prius to a Toyota dealership. During a routine oil change at the Valvoline off of W Olive and S Buena Vista, a mechanic spotted wetness in the housing beneath my transmission (pictures below). He recommended I get it checked out to make sure that there wasn't a leak. I made an appointment with Walt and stopped by his shop a few days later. He ran a "diagnostic" on my car and at the end of it simply said "the transmission's fine." I asked if there was anything else wrong and he sort of brushed me off. I didn't have a good feeling about the work. I asked Walt if he gave a military discount, since his site encourages customers to ask. He told me that he didn't offer discounts of any kind. My bill came out to roughly $285. I nodded my head and said, "Okay, Walt." The next week, I took my car to get a diagnostic at Toyota of Glendale. The cost was $220 and I got a complete report of the multi-point inspection done on my vehicle. The mechanic at Toyota identified the problem that the first mechanic at Valvoline was alluding to. He stated that the axle seals in my Prius were worn and small amounts of fluid had been leaking out into the housing that sits beneath the engine and transmission. The axle seals needed to be replaced. While Walt was correct that the actual transmission was fine, it would have been helpful to understand what would make me go see him in the first place. Just took my 2011 Honda Odyssey in for a noise that we feared was going to be a huge expense and dodged a bullet. I called ahead of time to make sure it was cool to bring our car by, and was lucky enough to meet with Walt himself. He immediately was able to take it for a test drive and he didn't mind that I went along with him. He was great. He started explaining things to me as to what he thought the issue might be. How when he tried "this" or "That" the noise was or wasn't happening, giving me a little history on transmissions and how they work, and eve more specifically, the strengths and weaknesses about the Honda ones in particular. He and his shop were pretty slammed, so he asked me to bring the car back in a day and a half. I dropped it off in the morning with a promise to get me some info by that lunchtime. He called well before that to inform of the tensioner issue that was going on and gave me a very reasonable price. I was lucky it was not the entire transmission that needed an overhaul. When I went to pick it up, he was working on his computer, building up files for reference of info he had found online, and shared his family history of his transmission expertise (learned from HIS dad and other masters at the shop from a very young age). He then took some more time to explain more about what the issue was in my particular case. So kind and so willing to take the time to explain. He gave me some suggestions for helping to get as much life as possible out of my current transmission and did everything with a smile. So happy I went to a locally owed shop - I got really great service. I'm sure everything in the transmission world can't come out perfect, but Walt's hunger for knowledge for all things transmission (and cars in general) is pretty evident that I bet that whatever your needs are, he'll do his best to help you. And, from a story he shared regarding an issue he had once with a transmission, he shared that even though there were problems after he did his initial fix for a customer (doing it 'by the book'), he took it on himself to get to the bottom of it. Once he discovered the real issue, he did that work at no cost to that customer to make things right. We are all so stupid in this car world that I'm sure he could have found a reason to charge that customer for his time, or just walked away from the problem, but he didn't. He stepped up and made things right fixing something that was not his fault. He really is a sound guy and I do feel he wants to help. Love finding people like this in our world. My Ford F150 Transmission had to be rebuilt at 135K miles. It was slipping pretty bad. Walt's had a good rep back in the day, so I drove across the Valley to Burbank. Walt's did the job quickly, but there was a lot of sloppiness. When I picked up the truck, it was cranking VERY slowly, really labored cranking. I thought this might be that they let the battery get low, so I drove it home to charge and still the slow crank. I couldn't believe they let the truck go out of the shop like that. I called Walt and he said they might have left off the ground cable. I'm pretty good with auto repair myself, so I crawled under and checked out their work: All grounds were there, but many fasteners were in the wrong place, meaning long bolts in short holes and short bolts in long holes. Also some missing fasteners. I hate sloppy mechanical work. Messy, too. Trans fluid everywhere, but no leaks. I replaced the missing Bellhousing bolts and I replaced the battery and it cranked fine. A few days later, the transmission starts slipping again, meaning it revs up too high when shifting, but then quickly drops back. It's intermittent, so I just let it go as I don't drive the Truck everyday. I'd take it back as it's still under warranty (1 yr), but I just don't really want to deal with these guys again. I figure I'll just run it until it breaks again then I'll buy a Tacoma. I would find a different shop, or if you go there, make sure the tech who works on your vehicle is competent- Not all of them are, it seems. read more

There comes a point in time when you've tried everything you can to resolve transmission issues on your classic car atleast in my case, I usually don't trust shops to work on my cars especially something that has a value/sentiment to me. When I initially called Walt i asked for a quote on complete transmission overhaul which i really believed my car needed, So I brought my car in on a thursday really not expecting much could be done besides a complete overhaul, to my surprise Walt gave me a call on monday and said my car was ready, i was blown away! My transmission didn't need to be rebuilt there was a frozen shift valve in the valvebody. Brought my son's car to Walt's with a suspected clutch issue. Walt was very straightforward and honest. Very soon he called my son and told him that it may not be the clutch at all, it may just be the master cylinder but he won't know for sure until he gets in there. Well, he got in there and that is all it was. About a thousand bucks cheaper than it would have been to fix the clutch. The point is, he was super honest about everything. After further diagnosis, he discovered that my throttle position sensor was having intermittent problems, causing the transmission computer to delay upshifts into second gear. I am U.S. Army female Veteran so I love how this shop does not assume I do not know about trucks, or engines. (I have been going to them off and on for ten years). They are a mechanic I can trust, and have an incredible honest work ethic. My Ford Ranger is over 20 years old and I love my dependable truck! I have incredibly high standards and love that this shop will take the time to explain what I ABSOLUTELY need to get done and what can wait because I am on a budget. (If you feel they made a mistake, let them know, they are willing to hear you out, and make it right). Trick for an appointment is to call between 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday. (It's a land line phone-no smartphone). Unfortunately, they are CLOSED on Saturday and Sunday because they work their butts off all week! Your BEST bet: if you are in the Burbank area is to just stop by (M-F) (before you head to work, or come by on your lunch break) and talk about what you are hearing or need, to see how they can help. IF THEY CAN DO IT, they will help you out. (If they cannot do it they will tell you. EX: They can not do tire alignments or tire balancing they do not have equipment for that). They are usually swamped so they will tell you the best time to bring it back. YES, you need an appointment ahead of time, since there are only two lifts to lift up your automobile to see under it. They are experts in American built car transmissions. (But also know about foreign engines). They specialize in the field of classic cars and would rather work than chit chat, so don't take it personally if they are brief in conversation with you. They get straight to the point. To keep costs down to the customer, they do not have a receptionist to take calls or check voicemails. When you drop off your automobile, you will sign a paper of what they will check. They will call you back and tell you their findings and you can ask for an estimate. They are underneath cars most of the day. For me, I would rather a mechanic that WORKS than one who sits around and chit-chats or one is on the computer all the time. MILLENNIAL TIP: There is no Instagram page for this business, there is no make an APPOINTMENT-ONLINE. Unfortunately you can not TEXT them for an appointment. Please be patient and remember there once was a time before smartphones. This is an incredible family owned old school shop which is why they work on "old school" (classic) cars. Walt himself is a friendly polite old school kind of guy. I have no doubt he knows transmissions. That said this review is for the OTHER guy in his shop that does more of the mechanical work. Towed my 60s Pontiac here due to great reviews. My distributor had failed. Left it for weekend. Brought them a distributor I ordered. The guy couldn't get my car running after putting it in, and claimed the timing chain had jumped. Then after the weekend as I was about to have it towed to a different shop, he realized the condenser had gone bad. Paid these guys like 400 bucks. I drive off and the car is misfiring left and right. Go back-he says points are bad Replaces points. Timing still horrible. Guy cannot set timing or get Dwell right to save his life. Car running horrible. I go back. He acts put out -hardly tries to improv. Walks away after spending one min on it. Total attitude. Drive off-still runs like crap. Take it to my carburetor guy -and in 2 min he gets Dwell right-runs way better. Then my car dies again due to more points issues I tow back and they say I need an expert -so why did you take the job to begin with and charge me 400 I if it's not your expertise? Towed to an auto electric down the street and it runs killer now. For trannys i am sure Walt is fine but I would NOT go there for anything else. read more

Brought my 04 explorer (a.k.a exploder), to walt's in January 2020. This car has a history of having a crappy transmission. Walt however, took it in and gave it back in no time. The price was a good deal for the fix, since most of these transmissions rebuilt online run a little less than what I paid which does not include the labor for installing. A few months pass when I felt the transmission slipping again. Took it back, and he gave it back in no time. Later on in the year it started to slip once more and he repaired it and has been driving smooth. This car is notorious for it's faulty transmissions. But walt was able to repair it and honor the warranty without giving a fuss about it. I am very grateful because it's our family car and we like to drive far in it. Oh man AM I GLAD I FOUND THIS SHOP! I have an american muscle car with a T56 manual transmission. Living in LA that means almost no one has experience with my car. I looked at review after review, called shop after shop trying to find someone I could trust to do a clutch service on my car. But when I called Walt I knew instantly they were the right guys for the job. He knew my car, he knew my transmission, they had loads of experience with american muscle and could see me asap. Plus they quoted me over the phone and were more than fair. In fact it gave me extra budget to also get an oil change and replace the rear main engine seal (typical LS1 and LS2 issue from what I've read). You can only get to that seal when you remove the transmission, which requires removing the drivetrain, which requires removing the exhaust, etc. (can you see why I didn't just trust any shop with this?!) So I get to the shop and knew I made the right choice. They had a great mix of all types of cars from Pontiacs, Chevy Corvettes, Camaros, Mustangs, to Hondas and range rovers in the shop. Everyone was on top of their game too, working hard and friendly. Best part is I got the car back in record time, the mechanic John (great guy, LOADS OF EXPERIENCE) that worked on my car showed me the old parts, went over what was done and just hung out and talked. Walt the owner also was a blast to shoot the breeze with. These guys are car guys and the shop is family run, so you know it's in their blood. I literally put off getting this service done for months because I couldn't find a shop I trusted and I'm glad I did because it now FEELS AMAZING. The clutch travel is smooth, firm, and consistent. The shifts are solid and predictable, and the car just feels babied. It's literally never felt better. Just thinking about it makes me want to go out for a drive right now! :D read more

Had to add to my first review. First and foremost, Walt is an absolute gentleman. I've now had him work on both my '65 Mustang and my wife's Audi Q5. He fixed a tranny leak on my Mustang and helped me time the engine. He did a great job on my wife's ZF Transmission which can be notoriously awkward given the very specific procedure which involves 3 checks in 1 all within a set temperature range. Walt and his mechanic are very patient and friendly and allowed me to watch what they were doing as I'm into cars myself. Would highly recommend Walt to anyone and everyone.
