I had been taking my Toyota Matrix to El Monte Service for years. My car ran beautifully for being almost 14 years old. Unfortunately, some idiot ran a red light and totaled my "beloved" car. I wanted to buy another one but couldn't find one in decent condition. Decided just to get a used vehicle instead. Found a great 2020 Buick Encore GX. dawned on me that El Monte Service works on foreign vehicles. Well that is not the case as they work just fine on my Buick. I highly recommend. I recently called this shop to ask about getting my 2000 Honda Prelude diagnosed and to get guidance on what parts I should start replacing to keep the car running well. Instead of helping, the person on the phone dismissed my questions and made me feel stupid for not knowing much about cars. When I asked about a diagnostic, he told me, "There's only so much these computers can tell me on older cars like yours. It's like asking a doctor to tell me when I'm going to die." Not only was the comment unnecessary, it was condescending. I wasn't asking for anything unreasonable -- just a basic inspection and professional advice. A mechanic should be able to diagnose a car through actual inspection, not just a computer scan, especially on older vehicles. He didn't offer solutions, didn't want to try, and seemed more interested in belittling me than helping a potential customer. I called the shop to request a quotation for a condenser and compressor for my Honda. Due to a language barrier, communication was difficult. The person who answered the call--who I believe is the owner--was extremely rude and unprofessional. Without any clear reason, he told me, "I don't want to deal with you man", even though I was simply asking for a price quote. I hung up and called again, thinking I might reach another representative, but the same person answered. When I asked to speak with someone else, he said he was the only person there - at this point I understand or assume that he is the shop owner Overall, the interaction was very unpleasant. I'm actually glad this happened before any work was done, because if this is how communication starts, I wouldn't feel comfortable reaching out later if an issue arose after the repair. read more

I'm staying temporarily in Glendale and looked for a reliable Acura repair and maintenance shop for an old 2002 Acura MDX. Over a quarter million miles and the check engine light came on in addition to a weird clicking sound when accelerating. My son took to the dealership awhile back and they replaced the fuel cap in addition to telling him a long list of other major and minor things to do: motor mounts, front shocks, transmission, etc.. I wanted another opinion on this old SUV and Yelp reviews of Honcura were positive. I called Stanley and he said to bring it down and he'd run a diagnostic on the check engine light and test drive the SUV. He did so after a short wait and gave me an honest confirming opinion: EVAP line near fuel cap has a leak which Dealer or Smog Check people can identify better (not dangerous) and the transmission is going bad (would cost $3-4K to replace). He said it would cost money for the other parties to identify the non-hazardous vapor leak not including repairs and it's better to just drive the SUV until the transmission goes bad. I have brought my 2010 Honda Civic to another shop and they filled the freon saying there was no leak. I didn't go back because they're closed on the weekends and that's only when I'm available. I came across Honcura through yelp searching for a shop to get my AC fixed. Stanley put in freon and dye and told me to bring it back when it stops getting cold again. Fast forward to a month, it wasn't getting cold so I brought it at 8AM on a Monday. Stanley called me about the price before going through with the repairs so I said yes. My car was ready about 4:30 PM. He showed me where the leaks were. I asked a couple questions about what needed to be done with my wife's Honda Civic 2017 running on 120k miles and he suggested some things to be done. I would definitely bring it to him. I bought a 32 year old Acura and wanted it serviced by a Honda specific shop. I did a fair amount of research and decided to give Honcura a try. Stanley is a throwback to what service shops used to be... where the owner knows customers, writes names down on a yellow sheet of paper, and really cares about what he does. Stanley is all of that. He knew my car... he knew what tends to go wrong on this model and I always felt he was being upfront and honest about what he suggesting. I went in for him to have a look and then made an appointment to come back the following week... I was shocked he remembered my name! Turns out he knows everyone's name. It's that kind of place. The shop is clean and neat and the prices are fair. I'd love to give Stanley more business, but Hondas are such great cars, they don't need constant service! Unfortunately, I found out that Honcura misrepresented the work done on my vehicle. The shock absorbers are after market KYB-G gas shock absorbers. I was quoted and paid for Honda shock absorbers. I even went back to Stanley on 8/29 to ask about the brake pedal which seemed a little squishy/clunky to me after the brake fluid flush. He kindly checked it out and said it was fine. I also asked about the confusing scribbles on the paperwork and was told those were notes to himself about where he sources the product and that the parts were all new and from the original manufacturer. However, while my Honda was at the dealership for an issue related to the airbag they did the multiple-point inspection. When they mentioned there were new after market shock absorbers on the car I said they were wrong, so they showed me and took pictures. KYB-G gas shock absorbers go for about $55 a pair and Honda shock absorbers can be about $150 each. Honda shock absorbers aren't gas. Perhaps one of Stanley's employees did something shady without him knowing, but it certainly leaves me feeling unsettled. I'm hoping he will offer to make this right. read more

I came in a couple of weeks ago to get my oil changed on my Honda Pilot. Stanley recommended that my rear brake pads were due to be replaced and he could could do it in an additional 30 mins so I had him do it. 3 days later I was driving with my daughter on the freeway and traffic stopped suddenly. My brakes functioned perfectly and we stopped but were hit hard from behind. My car was totaled but my daughter and I walked away unharmed. There's not much to say when it comes to Honcura. The work is honest and the prices are fair. Stanley is more of a stoic character when you first meet him, but I know that he knows what he's doing and he definitely knows what he's talking about. I have a 1988 Prelude that has a few issues and I had no issue trusting Stanley completely. My boyfriend consulted with him over the phone prior to bringing the car in, and he answered all our questions despite how annoying we may have been.
