I'm usually a thick-crust fan, but the thin crust at Mod is delicious (even the gluten free crust is quite good). I really like the "Mega" option which doubles the crust. The red sauce is not fantastic, but the white sauce is delectable. It's great that you get as many toppings as you want (even extra cheese) for no extra charge. Thumbs up!! Now, both (especially the downtown location) is staffed primarily by grungy, unclean looking people. Here's an example: A few weeks ago, the guy making my pizza was wearing shirt covered in pizza remnants -- just looked filthy. When he reached over to grab my toppings, his shirt-covered gut would rest against the side of my pizza. Many of the workers look like they haven't showered in a while. I realize that Portland has a reputation for being trendy and "weird", but staffing this way may alienate professionals (downtown) and families (Vancouver). Also, these to locations feel dirty. Perhaps Mod's niche is grungy, un-showered staff. I haven't been back since. Recently, I wast talking with a friend (we were both big Mod Pizza fans). We both agreed that Mod has gone downhill. Fortunately, there is also Pieology in downtown Portland. It is a little further away, but I find it worth it. I hope you guys get back on track because you do make good pizza. Cool concept. Basically you can think of MOD as the subway sandwiches of the pizza world... Choose a size. Choose toppings. Wait 4-5min for cooking. enjoy. The pizza isn't going to win any awards for flavor and the toppings all lean to the bland side but overall I think the concept is a winner and I would certainly go back for some utility pizza need. YUUUUM! I am not typically a pizza go-to kind of girl, ONLY because I can never be in charge of exactly what goes on it (too much cheese, not enough sauce, missing olives, etc.). But MOD pizza allows you to customize your pie your way-they do have a menu posted on the board with all ingredients (for those of you who want a mindless choice or a fan favorite) but you can also pick all your toppings a la carte. Did my pizza have cheese and other typical goodness? Yes, yes it did. But it also had a huge array of over veggies-FRESH VEGGIES!!-that I piled on top. The best part? You pay one price regardless of how many toppings you want. Pizzas are made in the brick oven so they come out in minutes. Best pizza I've ever had. My husband and I arrived and were greeted instantly. What a great feeling. I wasn't feeling their menu so I wanted a build your own pizza. Then I got flustered because I didn't want to be a pain in the ass. There's a blonde woman working here who made me feel beyond welcome and my order went as smooth as it could have gone. Eating my leftover MOD and thinking hmm, I should review this place. MOD has super-thin crust and a super-hot oven which means you get your pizza...well, not super fast, but pretty darn fast when it comes to pizza. You can build your own or add/remove toppings to/from one of their menu options, with unlimited toppings, for around $7. It's fast and yummy, but when Husband and I went, his onions wound up on my pizza, alas. Now I'm no pizza expert, but I guess there's this thin-vs-thick crust battle that's been waging since time immemorial. Let's just say that if you're a thick-crust devotee, MOD won't change your mind. This is basically what other restaurants would call flatbread. But hey, custom pizza hand-assembled by friendly staff in less than ten minutes for $7! We just moved to Vancouver from Portland and had a sudden craving for Pieology, a create-your-own pizza establishment we used to live close to with the exact same business model as Mod Pizza. Being that there aren't any Pieology's in Vancouver, we decided to make the drive and have our first Mod Pizza experience. To be honest, we were very surprised with how busy this place was compared to Pieology. We figured because it's the only place of its kind in the area, it would be worth the wait (we were right!). The customer service right off the bat was outstanding! The young woman who helped us at the beginning greeted us smiling- something we weren't used to at Pieology. She was extremely friendly and attentive as well which impressed us right off the bat. Marty, the next pizza creator (who has the same name as myself) was HILARIOUS with a very positive, fun attitude. This guy deserves to own his own Mod Pizza because his positive energy really sets the tone for the customer experience that is truly lacking in this day and age. He was cracking everybody up! The food: Very different from Pieology, but absolutely delicious. We each created our own pizzas which I believe is the way to go. I believe the bad reviews are from people ordering from the menu because you really can't be disappointed with building your own pizza- especially when you can add your own herbs and spices. I would give this place a 4 star review for the food because it's not anything extra-spectacular, it's just really good pizza. However, the whole experience in general was beyond anything we expected which makes me give it a 5. We will be back! read more

WOW. We need these in the SF Bay Area. The concept of building your own pizza isn't new. I've seen it around, and not very many people can do it well. MOD Pizza has the craft of pizza making down! Let's get down to the how-to: Pick a size/price. Pick your toppings. Grab a soda, utensils, and a table. Pick up your pizza. ENJOY! I love that you can create whatever kind of flavor profile you want.... there were three of us with three completely different pies. Each pie looked so different, tasted so different, and there were three very happy people sitting at that table! The space has been well-thought out. There's a patio that can open up for the summer, but also stays closed during the winter. The place is clean, the employees friendly and efficient, and the ingredients are fresh. Honestly when I walked in I was a bit skeptical. You walk up, order either one of their off the menu pizzas, or you can create your own. Our kids went with the "Maddy," which is just a cheese pizza. You can order it in one of two sizes, we went with the regular size (the other size is small (perfect for if you're not sharing). My husband ordered something with heaps of meat on it. I ordered one with pepperoni, spicy sausage, olives and artichoke. Everyone enjoyed their meal. We all split 3 pizzas, my husband ate one pizza himself- they are thin crust so if you're hungry- you might need your own. The kids (little kids not teenagers) and I split the other two pizzas between all 4 of us and we all had plenty to eat- with about a slice left over. No matter how many toppings you add to it, your pizza is the same cost. They have some other menu items, we didn't try anything else, they have soda and a pretty good selection of ice tea. For our family of 5, it was about the same cost as fast food, but for something much yummier! We will be back for sure, my daughter is already planning that this is where we will go for her birthday dinner. *Note: These are thin crust pizzas, if you don't like a thin crust you might not like it. It's a walk down and choose your toppings (think Subway style on the toppings) and then it goes into the oven and they call you up when your pizza is done. *Five stars are for restaurants with kids, I wouldn't match it up against a high end restaurant. I'm rating it for what it is, as far as a good place to go with kids and enjoy some really yummy pizza, even with picky eaters- Mod Pizza is, in my opinion, as good as it gets. It was super easy to order, the staff was really friendly and helpful, the food was ready really fast. All around, it was all of the things that make it a great place to go with kids. YES! A pizza made exactly the way I want it! My husband and I got to this place pretty regular since we found it. Basically you pick the size crust you want....or even double crust. Then you can pick a pizza from the menu or make your own. I like to modify their "Lucy Sunshine". Add pesto add chicken and so on. Whatever they have you can have them add it to your pizza. NO extra charge! They have a wide variety of sauces, meats and veggies and cheese!! They pop it in the oven...bada bing bada bang! You got your self the tastiest fastest yummiest pizza!!! It's been quite some time since I've been to this particular mod pizza. But I was once a regular who would grab a bite everyday after work. The pizza these guys make is amazing. Simple and brilliant execution of a build your own style pizza place. They have suggestions if you're not feeling creative. Customer service is great. Employees are super friendly and quickly learned my name after like 2 consecutive visits. Can't quite give it 5 stars because all they serve for food is pizza. I get it. That's the place. It's a pizza place. I'm self aware. It's just not the perfect pizza place. Maybe more unique ingredients? Something to tip it over into the memorable experience that would encourage return business. All in all an amazing place and they are in the perfect location. Not super atmospheric and more of a take out pizza place by nature. I've been here a few times. Novel? Yes. (Well, it's a copy of Chipotle which copied Subway -- but I digress.) Bottom line: strip away the cool factor of getting to pick whatever and as many toppings as you like and you discover it's deep secret: it just doesn't taste like pizza. It's a saltine cracker with bland cheese and bland sauce. No amount of toppings can save it from that reality. One last thing -- it's NOT "superfast". Any kind of line means 15 minutes to order, 20 more minutes to wait for your pizza's turn to be cooked. Be advised. read more

Ok, here goes a real rant on the proliferation of fast and not so good food. First, do we really want anymore of these seemingly sterile dining places, it looks like the Mickey-D's of pizza for cryin out loud. I've been there three times so it wasn't as though I didn't give it a decent opportunity to wow me, and if you can't get WOW pizza why not just get Papas, or Winco for that matter. Why not just do it the old way, great pizza isn't something to improve on, just a good copy will easily suffice. Now the food, it's not inedible but it's not what real pizza is supposed to be either. The Italian pizza that came here ninety years ago was great, real meat, not that crap that looks highly processed, real well done spiced sauce, not tomato juice with thickener, and real crust---what can be so hard about knowing your business basics? Pizza crust IS the base for all the other ingredients, don't they know that? Just because it's thin doesn't make for decent crust, it's GOT to be good to be considered a good pizza!! Lastly, if someone opened a Mod Pizza in Milan would anybody really eat there? No, why? Because they could go anywhere else and get better, and that's what I'm going to do, go elsewhere and get a real Italian Pizza. Came for teacher appreciation day. Who can resist a free pizza? Line was wraparound long, but couldn't have taken more than 10 to get through it and maybe another 7 to get our three pies. Pizzas are very solid, awesome pre-combo'd options or construct your own. Crust is crispy, almost cracker like, and as a result, pies aren't that high in calories. 600ish for an 11" pie that I only ate 3 of four slices. Called to let them know I was there and they told me they didn't have my order anymore but could make it again would only take 10 mins. Then when I get it it was cold. Like the cheese had sat there long enough the get hard again. Which leads me to believe they did have it the whole time and had me waiting for 10 mins for no reason. For anyone who's been to Pielogy, this place is very similar. I like the concept. You can customize your own personal pizza for $7 or you can order a preset pizza from their menu. The ingredients are fresh and your pizza is made to order. They also have some salad options and knots that I'll have to try sometime. The tea and other beverage options looked appealing as well. I actually was pleasantly surprised with MOD! I work in the area and heard mixed opinions from coworkers. My husband and I decided to stop by and give it a shot. I was incredibly reluctant because they have one crust here: super thin. However, that super thin crust was amazeballs. It was crispy enough to enjoy but not to the point of it being cracker-like. To be honest, it reminded me of the Totino's Pizza's (don't judge me!) I got the "mini" size which was perfect for me. Hubby got the "MOD" sized. They have pizzas that you can order, but you can add anything you want or make your own pizza for the same price. For a drink, beer, and two pizzas we paid $25. Not bad at all. The best part was that it's super fast - just as advertised. The people working there were ridiculously friendly and helpful. I'll definitely be going back on those days that I forget my bagged lunch and my hubby and I decided we'd like to go back some other time. read more

MOD Pizza is an idea whose time is long overdue, and heralds an end to having to settle for 6" pizzas at 14" prices and 26" wait times. To avoid repetition, suffice it to say that every five-star rated review here is well-deserved. Two points I want to make: As good as the pizza (and concept) is, the self-serve drinks are more than worth the trip by themselves and, when combined with a pizza you've built to your specifications, the experience is over the top delicious. And the service is outstanding and served with a smile and conversation. No leftover teenage angst here. Admittedly, if YOU LIKE THICK CRUST THIS IS NOT THE PLACE FOR YOU, one of the cheeses Mozzarella or Asiago (I think this is the guilty party) is a tad salty, so, will order without next time, red sauce is nice & light & will ask for a little more if it next visit. I LOVE tomatoes on my pizza & MOD's were outstanding & stole the show. Very rarely have I had any tomatoes that were so juicy & sweet. What a treat! Fast pizza? Who ever heard of that before. My wife recommended that we try it. Whenever I think of "fast pizza" I think of pizza rolls in the microwave. Boy was I in for a surprise! Walk in and you are immediately greeted by the staff. Look on the wall and you see a wall of their favorites. They have three sizes, mini (6" for $4.87), mod (11" for $7.87) and mega (double 11" for $10.87). Now you can order any of their favorites. Now unlike other pizza places where you pay for additional toppings, here you can add whatever you want. Then there is the cooking time. From the time we pis for our pizza to the time it came to our table, maybe four minutes. Didn't even have time to get our drinks! Now for the taste. It is a thin crust and is perfectly crispy and not soggy. The toppings were jay right. My son and I ordered the Mod "Mad Dog", red sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, mild sausage, ground beef and we added bacon and red onion. YUM! My first visit here was during the first month of business. I was happy to go to a local MOD Pizza, since I enjoyed it in Seattle. I walked to the register, ordered, and soon had my pizza. Last night, my daughter and I walked in and there was no line. We went to the register and we were not acknowledged for a minute or so. Then an employee barked at us, letting us know that if we want to order we need to go to the other side. Um, okay. There are no signs indicating "order here" or "pay here". We walked around the corner and then stood there for quite some time - long enough to make us feel uncomfortable. We watched two employees making pizza, chatting, and ignoring us. As the minutes went by, I realized our visit that day was probably a mistake. Feeling unwelcome, I tried to talk my daughter into going someplace else. We can get a sandwich next door. Or how about some mac & cheese? But her heart was set on pizza and a decent pie is hard to find in Vancouver. Finally, a third employee (the only polite one in the bunch) apologized for the wait and asked us what we would like. We gave him our order and he asked us to meet him at the register. You mean the register where we were at in the first place? I don't know what kind of game this is, but okay. Listen, I know how to read a menu. I don't need to stare at the ingredients behind the glass to figure out what I want. Jimmy Johns wins over Subway. I know what vegetables look like and taste like. I'm familiar with pepperoni. Let's not make this weird. While we waited, we listened to an employee screech out customer's names at full volume, indicating orders are ready. I was happy to take mine to go. Besides the serious lack of flow in this place, the pizza is pretty good. I prefer thin crust, so this is a good place for that. If you are more into artichokes and spinach over a loaded meat pizza, then this is your place. It's nice to have something different besides the regular low-quality chains.
