Good fish and chips, service was fine. But the place is small and so when it gets buzzing it gets very loud. Add that to the fact you're right on the beach, which yes is perfect backdrop for a fish and chips dinner and is lovely to watch the sunset anytime, but you definitely pay extra simply for that fact. I've been to many fish and chip joints NOT directly across from the water with just as good (if not sometimes better) food and service and paid waaaaaay less for the same dinner. If you're diehard set on eating fish and chips AT the beach, full experience seagulls and all AND you don't mind paying for the water, birds and extra tourists then by all means this is your place, but if your wallet isn't overflowing and you've seen the sand before and seagulls stealing your fries aren't your thing, I'd say check out somewhere a bit less pricey. read more

We've been several times. Do not order the coleslaw. It's boxed and brought in and awful. You would think for such a popular restaurant they would make their own fresh. The fish is heavily battered. The little seaside village of White Rock, BC certainly seems like heaven if you're a fish & chips fan. In the space of one block, you can find no less than four 'chippies'. Since I only can eat one meal at a time, I chose Moby Dick Restaurant to review first, but I'll definitely be back to check out the other places. To start with, MDR simply LOOKS like a F&C restaurant should. The dining room is smallish and full of lots of nifty nautical bric-a-brac. Well-worn wooden floors and furniture complete the effect, giving the place a cozy, homey feel. Service is quite good. My server was a very cheerful and efficient young lady who seems quite happy to work there, and is quite proud of their product. The food is good. The fish is done in the battered style, and the fish used (lingcod) is clearly fresh. Chips are made in-house, and good as well. They serve a nicely seasoned Manhattan (red) style chowder in the fall and winter that is definitely worth trying. I had the First Mate's Platter, which included onion rings, and breaded scallops & prawns (no oysters today, so they gave me extra scallops & prawns) All in all, this is a great place to get English-style fish & chips. The only reason I'm being stingy with the stars is that I want to try the other spots (Fishboat, Montgomery's Cottage Lunch, etc). I reserve the right to upgrade this review. This has got to be one of the most underrated...usually if i'm out in the area, i try to make a pit stop here. though the hours are prob limited at this time of season. Love the batter, not too oily, and the fish just flakes off fr every bite. and really, the best part is their home made tartar sauce, asking for seconds is welcome. and i prefer the few window tables they have at the front. in the summer, they can certainly run out of fish by 6pm! it's happened a few times. cool washrooms too, but just one at a time. pretty good value, as u get a bonus piece. read more

Multi-liner: We mozied down here one weekday winter's morn for the sole purpose of some deep fried fish and potatoes. I've only ever eaten Moby Dick's takeout on the rocks by the beach given how busy it always is, so it was a pleasant change of scenery to sit down inside and not have to fight off hordes of fanatical seagulls. Service was fast once we were seated and we definitely left satisfied as always. It's delicious fish and chips -- not the very best I've had, but you can't go wrong. *However* if the wait is too long, you will be just as happy (unless you need your delayed satisfaction) with the other highly rated establishments along the road. Food: Fish was golden and well-breaded though a little oily on the outside, tender and flavorful on the inside even without tartar sauce (not entirely sure what the fish is, though). Fries were plentiful though sadly a little soggy (probably from the fish siting on top -- if you order less than 3 pieces, they do not come on a separate plate) and not as crispy as I like them. Also a nice surprise was hot apple cider with cinnamon stick and lemon! It was like a "cherry on the cake". Highly recommended! Last week I took 5 high school students and 5 adults for lunch at Moby Dicks. Off the top they were able to make all out food for takeout in under 15min. The fish is big and tasted fresh. The batter was okay, but it didn't stuck to the fish very well. That's the only reason for a low score . NOTE: a 1 piece fish is actually 2 pieces. Went here a few weeks ago because someone told me it was the best fish and chips in the Lower Mainland area and while it did not disappoint I think we may have caught them on an off day. There was a lineup outside, not uncommon for this place, and we put our name down to be seated inside. We didn't have to wait very long, maybe 15 minutes max. They seemed fairly organized at getting people in the door, but once we were inside the place was so packed that the waitress forgot us for almost half an hour. Once we finally flagged down a waitress and got our food, everything was great. The batter on the fish was excellent and the fries were really good. I would definitely give this place another try! Time to talk about another one of my favourites! Again, the only reason I have a load of 4 & 5 stars reviews is because I rig it. I don't go into too many random restaurants. Most places I enter are tried and tested by fellow yelpers. It's not uncommon for this joint to have a lineup at 4/5am or earlier and even be out of fish by 6 am on a good day. One of the best times I recall going here is when I brought a few of my friends. Everyone was starving, a buddy of mine was going to order 2 pieces, he was on a diet, I pushed him and he got the 3 piece fish & chips. We couldn't stop laughing when it arrived & it came with 5 pieces !! Mind you, normally there's an extra piece but for some miraculous reason he had been given an extra 2, must be fate! It was awesome. Anyways, I always get tartar sauce, 4/5 pieces of fish, and calarmari, which I specifically order slightly undercooked everywhere in order to avoid getting a rubber-like appetizer, it's always perfect! The fries are no normal fries either, they tower it on your plate, they're nice and sweet, taste amazing with the tartar sauce. If you can get on the patio on a nice day, it feels like you're having just the best day possible. The Good: Everything! Dropped in here for lunch today. I had the two-piece fish and chips. The fish, Alaskan cod, was overcooked and the batter tasted a little bit burned. Portion sizes for the fish were fine. You will pay a little bit extra for eating fish and chips in a tourist trap but it wasn't otherwise overpriced. The chips were standard fare. Nothing special but done as you'd expect them to be. The restaurant is fairly small and busy. Decor is what you'd expect a fish and chips shack with seating to be. The service was courteous and prompt. I guess I might've walked in with particularly high expectations given all the positive reviews but burnt batter and overcooked fish kind of ruined it for me considering it's deep fried fish and chips - not that easy to screw up. Maybe they were just having a bad day - they were very busy at the time. I'll try another one of the eight(?) dedicated fish and chip places on the strip next time around. read more

Woooh Nelly! A great place to dine in White Rock. I arrived close to 2pm with a group of 9 and sat in the patio area. I ordered the one piece, well two piece after receiving the complimentary piece of fish. The tartar sauce was something to reckon with, it was very tasty. My son loves poutine and said this isn't he best he has had so far! The next time I'm on the mainland I'm making the trek to White Rock. Contrary to the first post here by Laurie R., Canadians DON'T put white vinegar on their fish and chips, it's malt vinegar. Further to that I'll provide some actual insight into this place. If you go during the warm months, you'll see that this is the most popular place on east beach for fish and chips - and it's overrated. The best fish and chips resides a few doors down at Coney Island. The fish portions here are fair. They claim to have big portions - it's not big - it's normal. They claim to have a tempura batter but it's a little - just a little mind you - too doughy to be a good tempura fish and chip batter. It tasted as good as any other good fish and chip place - in other words nothing special. The fries are OK. I thought they were a little too limp, and I somehow got stuck with a bunch of one inch fries, but they tasted OK. The tartar has a nice dill component to it, but it is too mayonnaisey for me - when it needed a little more zing. The coleslaw is a thing of preference and I hated theirs. I like creamy, theirs is not. And the dealbreaker is I like COLD coleslaw - theirs was room temperature. Also, stick with fish and chips here - don't bother with anything else especially with the seafood platter - the shrimp, oysters, and scallops where pathetic. Small, not fresh, and small. They can get away with the highest prices because they're the busiest - but busy and high prices do not mean best. If you go, sit outside if you have a choice. I literally travel there twice a year and the first thing I do is go there. I cannot even eat fish and chips anywhere anymore. Even though there are a million fish and chips place along the sea side, this place is always packed. The fish is scrumteous and the fries are crispy and salty and yummy. For those of you who travel to Vancouver, BC, I'd suggest making a quick pit-stop in the suburban beach community of White Rock. In the summers, White Rock reminds me of the Midwestern (USA) beach towns that I vacationed in as a kid. Time seems to stand still here. Food. Fish and chips. This is a simple dish, but can often suck when prepared by idiots. In the Pac NW, we are spoiled with top-notch seafood. Moby Dick delivers in the "not sucking" department. There are similar establishments that offer Salmon and Halibut as an option, this place doesn't. Fear not, the Cod here is prepared perfectly! Check it out! read more

When in Canada its polite to embrace tradition. Well having fish 'n chips by the water is tradition. But here's the kicker - with vinegar! That's right, Canadians put salt and white vinegar on their french fries. I remember having withdraws when living near Alki Beach (West Seattle) and thought about carrying my own bottle. My childhood memory is having fish 'n chips at Moby Dick's across from the beach. Trying to recapture my youth, I've been back. Well, it was pretty good. I guess I don't eat a lot of fried food anymore and I hardly ever order fish 'n chips. However once in a while, maybe on a yearly pilgrimage, I could go for it with a cup of clam chowder. This is the only Fish and chips place we go on the strip by the White Rock beach. There are several other fish and chips places but since our first time to Moby Dick, we have stuck with it. Why change something when it's working out, right? The fish is big, light and crispy. They only sell Cod which is too bad. I do prefer Halibut over Cod but halibut can be so expensive so maybe it's a good thing they only carry cod. The calamari is good as well; they are not exceptional but they are good. I do like their Tzatziki sauce because they have chopped up cucumbers. It adds a nice crunch to the sauce. The interior is interesting with lots of humorous signs and pictures from the past. I definitely feel like a tourist when I am in there dining even though I live in the area. We've also gotten take outs and eaten them by the water. Definitely a good place to check out when you are in White Rock. read more

My b/f insisted we go to Moby Dicks to have their fish ..probably to shut my complaining up. It worked. Please note...when you order a piece of fish they give you a second piece. Glad he told me this for when I ordered my one piece and it came with two gigantic pieces I was shocked and happy all at once. The fish was perfect. The batter wasn't too thick. It actually tasted great! instead of tasting like nothing coated with cardboard! Their homemade tarter sauce was SO good. lemony and tangy...yum. The coleslaw was great. not too glooped up with mayo, which everyone hates! My boyfriend had fries, fried oysters and calamari. It was really good! I do like oysters, I like them raw, deep fried and from the can...these deep fried guys were SO good. you could taste the sea. perfect. We sat outside and it was beautiful out. Enjoyed very tasty spicy Caesars and enjoyed the sunshine. They were hopping busy and had a line up even before they opened. This is a great place to come and just soak up Whiterock and enjoy what BC has to offer for food and weather. When you see a line up like they have everyday its a huge indicator that they are good....people don't wait 20 mins for bad fish and chips! We stopped by on our way home from our weekend trip to Vancouver. Originally we wanted to try the Indian restaurant two doors down but the guy said there's only one of him and he can't serve us.. He can only read our palms -_- yah. Anyways we decided to grab a bite at Moby Dick instead. Most of us got the fish and chips, the batter was really good but I thought it was a little thick. We sort of left half of the batter at moby dick. Poutine was good but I really can't compare it against another poutine dish. My fave was the claim chowder. We were disappointed. We were here three years ago and remember it being better than it is now. The batter was rather too thick resulting in it being under-cooked and soggy on the inside. The fish itself was fresh though. We weren't too hungry and ordered two one piece meals so it seemed a little wasteful to be presented with two two piece meals. Better to stick to the single piece and knock a little off the price rather than the second piece of fish that we couldn't finish. We waited almost an hour for a table after being told the wait would be 15 to 20 minutes. Although the meal was OK, it certainly wasn't the best fish and chips we have had. Far from it. Fish N Chips soooo good!!! Best one I've had thus far, or perhaps it's out there on the top! Their batter was perfect - wasn't too soggy, or soft, or too hard and crunchy. It was perfect! I heard this place was getting a lot of criticism about it's name (which honestly it's the dumbest news I've ever read ever), but it backlashed and brought more business to them lol The restaurant itself isn't large. Space can be very limited and noisy, but the food is great. Atmosphere: 7/10; mainly because of the lighting and all the shenanigan you find one their walls and ceiling. We found out about Moby Dick through other friends with British origins living in the Pacific Northwest. It was recommended as one of the most authentic English-style fish and chip experiences. The restaurant is small and has a family run atmosphere. The range of fish menu items was limited to a few, but did include burgers and various other non-fish items. Service was very prompt and friendly and costs were low. The white fish wasn't superb, but was fine and accompanied by a nice home-made Tartar. The fried shrimp were similarly ok but not great. However, the Chips were, as promised, very authentic English style - thicker, less crispy. A much more tasty experience, and provided with plenty of malt vinegar as needed. For me at least, this makes the trip worthwhile. I've not had as authentic a chip in North America before. read more
