While spending a couple days in Surrey, we asked folks, "Where can we go to get the BEST Fish & Chips?" Nine-out-of-ten of them responded, "Moby Dick's." And I can see why! We were told to either get there early or expect to wait in line and eat it on the beach. I had no clue what that meant, but we were determined to try this. We did get there early and were able to sit down and enjoy a great fish & chips dinner. The fish portions are HUGE! The crust was crispy, flavorful and not greasy. The fries were good, but it's that fish that's the seller. Service was a little slow but I quickly attribute that to how unbelievably busy they got within minutes of our arrival. Before we could even finish ordering, a line was forming at their take-out window and quickly went down the sidewalk. Yet, we looked at other places when we walked around later and NONE of them have NEAR the waiting line. That's how good Moby Dick's is. This is going to be a regular stop for us whenever we're in Vancouver for any length of time. read more

The little seaside village of White Rock, BC certainly seems like heaven if you're a fish & chips fan. In the space of one block, you can find no less than four 'chippies'. Since I only can eat one meal at a time, I chose Moby Dick Restaurant to review first, but I'll definitely be back to check out the other places. To start with, MDR simply LOOKS like a F&C restaurant should. The dining room is smallish and full of lots of nifty nautical bric-a-brac. Well-worn wooden floors and furniture complete the effect, giving the place a cozy, homey feel. Service is quite good. My server was a very cheerful and efficient young lady who seems quite happy to work there, and is quite proud of their product. The food is good. The fish is done in the battered style, and the fish used (lingcod) is clearly fresh. Chips are made in-house, and good as well. They serve a nicely seasoned Manhattan (red) style chowder in the fall and winter that is definitely worth trying. I had the First Mate's Platter, which included onion rings, and breaded scallops & prawns (no oysters today, so they gave me extra scallops & prawns) All in all, this is a great place to get English-style fish & chips. The only reason I'm being stingy with the stars is that I want to try the other spots (Fishboat, Montgomery's Cottage Lunch, etc). I reserve the right to upgrade this review. This has got to be one of the most underrated...usually if i'm out in the area, i try to make a pit stop here. though the hours are prob limited at this time of season. Love the batter, not too oily, and the fish just flakes off fr every bite. and really, the best part is their home made tartar sauce, asking for seconds is welcome. and i prefer the few window tables they have at the front. in the summer, they can certainly run out of fish by 6pm! it's happened a few times. cool washrooms too, but just one at a time. pretty good value, as u get a bonus piece. read more

Dropped in here for lunch today. I had the two-piece fish and chips. The fish, Alaskan cod, was overcooked and the batter tasted a little bit burned. Portion sizes for the fish were fine. You will pay a little bit extra for eating fish and chips in a tourist trap but it wasn't otherwise overpriced. The chips were standard fare. Nothing special but done as you'd expect them to be. The restaurant is fairly small and busy. Decor is what you'd expect a fish and chips shack with seating to be. The service was courteous and prompt. I guess I might've walked in with particularly high expectations given all the positive reviews but burnt batter and overcooked fish kind of ruined it for me considering it's deep fried fish and chips - not that easy to screw up. Maybe they were just having a bad day - they were very busy at the time. I'll try another one of the eight(?) dedicated fish and chip places on the strip next time around. read more

Last week I took 5 high school students and 5 adults for lunch at Moby Dicks. Off the top they were able to make all out food for takeout in under 15min. The fish is big and tasted fresh. Went here a few weeks ago because someone told me it was the best fish and chips in the Lower Mainland area and while it did not disappoint I think we may have caught them on an off day. There was a lineup outside, not uncommon for this place, and we put our name down to be seated inside. We didn't have to wait very long, maybe 15 minutes max. They seemed fairly organized at getting people in the door, but once we were inside the place was so packed that the waitress forgot us for almost half an hour. Once we finally flagged down a waitress and got our food, everything was great. The batter on the fish was excellent and the fries were really good. I would definitely give this place another try! Time to talk about another one of my favourites! Again, the only reason I have a load of 4 & 5 stars reviews is because I rig it. I don't go into too many random restaurants. Most places I enter are tried and tested by fellow yelpers. It's not uncommon for this joint to have a lineup at 4/5am or earlier and even be out of fish by 6 am on a good day. One of the best times I recall going here is when I brought a few of my friends. Everyone was starving, a buddy of mine was going to order 2 pieces, he was on a diet, I pushed him and he got the 3 piece fish & chips. We couldn't stop laughing when it arrived & it came with 5 pieces !! Mind you, normally there's an extra piece but for some miraculous reason he had been given an extra 2, must be fate! It was awesome. Anyways, I always get tartar sauce, 4/5 pieces of fish, and calarmari, which I specifically order slightly undercooked everywhere in order to avoid getting a rubber-like appetizer, it's always perfect! The fries are no normal fries either, they tower it on your plate, they're nice and sweet, taste amazing with the tartar sauce. If you can get on the patio on a nice day, it feels like you're having just the best day possible. The Good: Everything! I ordered the one piece, well two piece after receiving the complimentary piece of fish. The tartar sauce was something to reckon with, it was very tasty. My son loves poutine and said this isn't he best he has had so far! The next time I'm on the mainland I'm making the trek to White Rock. Fish N Chips soooo good!!! Best one I've had thus far, or perhaps it's out there on the top! Their batter was perfect - wasn't too soggy, or soft, or too hard and crunchy. It was perfect! I heard this place was getting a lot of criticism about it's name (which honestly it's the dumbest news I've ever read ever), but it backlashed and brought more business to them lol The restaurant itself isn't large. Space can be very limited and noisy, but the food is great. Atmosphere: 7/10; mainly because of the lighting and all the shenanigan you find one their walls and ceiling. Contrary to the first post here by Laurie R., Canadians DON'T put white vinegar on their fish and chips, it's malt vinegar. Further to that I'll provide some actual insight into this place. If you go during the warm months, you'll see that this is the most popular place on east beach for fish and chips - and it's overrated. The best fish and chips resides a few doors down at Coney Island. The fish portions here are fair. They claim to have big portions - it's not big - it's normal. They claim to have a tempura batter but it's a little - just a little mind you - too doughy to be a good tempura fish and chip batter. It tasted as good as any other good fish and chip place - in other words nothing special. The fries are OK. I thought they were a little too limp, and I somehow got stuck with a bunch of one inch fries, but they tasted OK. The tartar has a nice dill component to it, but it is too mayonnaisey for me - when it needed a little more zing. The coleslaw is a thing of preference and I hated theirs. I like creamy, theirs is not. And the dealbreaker is I like COLD coleslaw - theirs was room temperature. Also, stick with fish and chips here - don't bother with anything else especially with the seafood platter - the shrimp, oysters, and scallops where pathetic. Small, not fresh, and small. They can get away with the highest prices because they're the busiest - but busy and high prices do not mean best. If you go, sit outside if you have a choice. I literally travel there twice a year and the first thing I do is go there. I cannot even eat fish and chips anywhere anymore. Even though there are a million fish and chips place along the sea side, this place is always packed. The fish is scrumteous and the fries are crispy and salty and yummy. For those of you who travel to Vancouver, BC, I'd suggest making a quick pit-stop in the suburban beach community of White Rock. In the summers, White Rock reminds me of the Midwestern (USA) beach towns that I vacationed in as a kid. Time seems to stand still here. Food. Fish and chips. This is a simple dish, but can often suck when prepared by idiots. In the Pac NW, we are spoiled with top-notch seafood. Moby Dick delivers in the "not sucking" department. There are similar establishments that offer Salmon and Halibut as an option, this place doesn't. Fear not, the Cod here is prepared perfectly! Check it out! read more

When in Canada its polite to embrace tradition. Well having fish 'n chips by the water is tradition. But here's the kicker - with vinegar! That's right, Canadians put salt and white vinegar on their french fries. I remember having withdraws when living near Alki Beach (West Seattle) and thought about carrying my own bottle. My childhood memory is having fish 'n chips at Moby Dick's across from the beach. Trying to recapture my youth, I've been back. Well, it was pretty good. I guess I don't eat a lot of fried food anymore and I hardly ever order fish 'n chips. However once in a while, maybe on a yearly pilgrimage, I could go for it with a cup of clam chowder. This is the only Fish and chips place we go on the strip by the White Rock beach. There are several other fish and chips places but since our first time to Moby Dick, we have stuck with it. Why change something when it's working out, right? The fish is big, light and crispy. They only sell Cod which is too bad. I do prefer Halibut over Cod but halibut can be so expensive so maybe it's a good thing they only carry cod. The calamari is good as well; they are not exceptional but they are good. I do like their Tzatziki sauce because they have chopped up cucumbers. It adds a nice crunch to the sauce. The interior is interesting with lots of humorous signs and pictures from the past. I definitely feel like a tourist when I am in there dining even though I live in the area. We've also gotten take outs and eaten them by the water. I was in the area on a nice day during a day off during the work week last year. I had some friends out of town and wanted to show them a different side of Vancouver. I had high hopes for the fish and chips. The fish was okay but the batter wasn't really sticking onto the fish and fell apart and not in the good way. The taste was okay, it just wasn't as solid as expected and or eaten in the past. Because the taste was still good this observation isn't going to have any impact on the rating.
