The prices are slightly lower than Tachibana and they have a larger variety of Maki. The quality of the food I ordered was good, and the food I saw around me looked absolutely delicious. I saw some of the sashimi they served and the color looked great. Today I got the Roll 69 & Avocado Roll and my co-worker got the Beef Teriyaki. The Roll 69 roll was delicious with just enough spice. They add a little bit of sesame seeds to the inside of the avocado roll which adds a little something different to the really simple roll. Came here instead after finding out Ichi Ban was closed, but was definitely not disappointed! It's located in a pretty nondescript area surrounded by other small shops, but it's decorated nicely. The interior does not seat very many people, however; by the time we left, there was a bit of a line forming. While it is a Korean-owned restaurant, the sushi here is pretty comparable to a Japanese-owned place. The salmon on the sushi was some of the freshest I've ever seen, and absolutely melted in my mouth. They also have fatty tuna (which is market price; not quite sure how much it was, they didn't write the amount on our final check, but it's probably pretty pricey) which was also delicious. We ordered something like 6 rolls, 4 pieces of nigiri (the fatty tuna), a hand roll, agedashi tofu, two green tea ice creams, and a hot green tea as a drink. The total came out to be around $100, which I don't think was that bad considering the amount of food we got. They have a baked scallop roll which comes out HOT and wrapped in tin foil to keep it that way which was absolutely divine. (most places only have a sashimi assortment) LOVE the FIRECRACKER ROLL (consistently good). Always a safe bet, always delicious. LOVE the complimentary spicy tofu in the beginning, Nice touch. LOVE the BAKED SCALLOP ROLL. It is so comforting and nice & spicy. Japanese lasagna roll was just OK this past visit. Volcano roll - looks really cool but is just OK, as well. Roll 69 (spicy tuna inside and fresh tuna outside w/ eel sauce) - tasted a little off, and a little too much fishy-ness to be desired this past visit. This is my favorite local sushi spot. I stick to pretty basic rolls like yellowtail scallion and salmon avocado, and they always taste fresh. The tofu appetizer has a great sauce and is a nice start to the meal. One of these days I want to go try some of the lunch specials, or go with a larger group so I can try more things. The dining room is pretty small--maybe 8 or 9 tables + sushi bar. The service is just fine if not always super friendly. Been going to Miyagi for over 10 yrs now and finally calling it quits. This evening I placed a telephone order for pickup with a nice gentleman who took my order. Called back a couple minutes later to ask for a modification due to an allergy and was appalled by the older woman's attitude towards me. Because I was still looking forward to the food I still arrived to pick up my order. Upon arrival when stating my name the older woman rolls her eyes. I remained calm and asked for low sodium soy sauce packets which she was conviently all out of, although she was packing it for another to go order. We were also denied a spoon for the soup we ordered. Instead of trying to offer any assistance the owner butts in aggravating the situation instead of getting clarity on what was transpiring. My partner and I were told never to come back because they have other customers....wow just WOW! No matter how good the food, this type of behavior from staff is unacceptable. Was trying to support my local eatery due to COVID 19 and accused of being rude when ordering (lie) and spitefully denied things was the final straw for me. The customer service here is absolute rubbish. I went with my parents a few days ago. There were plenty of tables available and we were seated almost immediately. After that, we were unable to get served at all. Not even our drink order was taken. We SAT there for over 30 minutes and finally decided to leave, and go across the road to Ichiban (where we were eating within 15 minutes of walking through the door) I am extremely disappointed because this is not the first time that the customer service has been this horrible. The usual complaints are, never refilling my drink, sometimes randomly refilling an empty cup of coke with water instead. A fantastic hidden gem of a place! This itty bitty sushi shop definitely brings it when it comes to fantastic fancy rolls and delicious standard rolls, and it feels very authentic. I heard a couple at a table next to us speaking Japanese, so I feel like that's a particularly good sign, haha. We tried the Volcano roll and the Japanese Lasagna roll, both of which were delicious. The Volcano roll is particularly impressive (it's on the specials menu). We also got spicy tuna, eel & avocado, salmon, and some inari. All was very tasty (I especially liked the eel!) and I thought the sushi quality was definitely top notch. The staff was very friendly, and this is clearly a popular spot because it was definitely bumping when we went! The only negative, and the reason for the 4- instead of 5-star rating is that the pacing was really off. Everything came out together, basically, even the edamame and miso soup, except for one roll that came out immediately. They also were basically bussing our table as we were still eating, which gave us the impression that we kinda needed to eat and jet so that they could turn the table over. It wasn't rude, exactly, just kind of awkward to have our plates cleared before we were even done eating. I think we were in an out in 25 minutes, hahah. Maybe there's less of that "dine and dash" feeling if you eat on a weeknight or head in for lunch. read more

Jesus Harbaugh Christ is this place good. Everyone without any discernible palate raves about the Tacky Ban Wahhh place that's a nine iron away, because of course they do, but this place is SO much better. There are a few places down the Parkway into town that may beat it, but Miyagi is such a good value that I would be hard pressed to rate those other places any higher. No sushi in the US is "fresh," but Miyagi's fish tastes like it was just cut off some still-squirming pelagic beauty. Order regular old nigiri or maki and you'll be duly impressed. Throw in a special roll and you'll be thanking ME for the food THEY served YOU. It's pants-changingly fantastic. And for those who have commented negatively about the FREE tofu appetizer everyone gets, well, a hot bath with a plugged in toaster is a good option for you. No mercy was shown to me nor my dining companion (they must have studied at the ruthless Cobra Kai dojo in Karate Kid) when we accidentally ordered the wrong "dragon roll". They have the slender sushi card that you mark with a pencil, and they have a menu. We marked the dragon roll on the card, but pointed at the menu...needless to say, this was confusing, and instead of asking for clarification, they just brought out whatever it was they wanted to. I apologized for the confusion, but still asked that we get a substitution. No dice. Our waitress had the best fake smile and unwavering attitude. In fact, there were TWO Dragon rolls on the menu, and one on the card for a total of THREE possibilities. You'd think in light of this confusing ordering scheme, they'd have cut us a break. Hell no. She even went on to admit that she was confused by the marked card, and us talking about our order from the menu, but no, it didn't occur to her to ask us for clarification. Naturally that would have made too much sense. Save your palette, your wallet, and excercise good sense by taking yourself over to Tachibana which is just a couple of blocks away. Less expensive much better quality fish, and a more standardized and easily understood menu. Perhaps this is why Tachibana has won a Washingtonian Magazine food award for every year for the past 15 years or so? Also, ordered the tuna and just ate it without rice. Pure mush. A sad pink color, and limp. No snap or firmness that you find at Tachibana and other legit sushi joints. This of course would be why many of their fish dishes are cooked at Miyagi since they can then get away with using substandard or older fish. read more

Meh. Miyagi's rolls are OK but usually are sloppily constructed, cut into too-large segments, and sometimes just have too many random components. (I like interesting rolls, but it's a bit much for a roll to have cream cheese AND jalapenos AND be tempura fried AND have multiple clashing sauces on it. The fish quality at Miyagi is passable but nothing special. Frankly, it seems like some of their overly-complicated rolls are designed to hide low-quality fish cuts that otherwise wouldn't be servable. Also, I've had better miso soup out of a just-add-water packet. This restaurant was once one of my all time favorites but not since my last two visits... First- It has always bothered me that they do not list out their items on the bill so I never really know what I am paying for... Second- I ordered a roll that had salmon on the inside and tuna on the outside. They messed it up and only used one fish throughout. It was frustrating that I was paying for a lot more fish than I had received. Even after pointing it out to my server, she did nothing to change it and did not take it off my bill. Third, and MOST impt- The seaweed around a roll was chewy and stringy. I was so disgusted by this that I was forced to say something. I brought it to the owners attention very politely and respectfully and claimed that I was not going to eat it. She insisted that I was crazy and the seaweed was fine. She even went to the extent of bringing out a sample piece from the back to show me its crispy quality claiming that I was wrong and the food was fine. NEVER ONCE did she apologize, tell me that its ok, never offered to take it off the bill, never did any of the things that restaurants do to please a customer. I had to deduct one star for the appearance of yellowtail on one of my rolls. It was definitely falling apart....the fish, not the roll itself. The rolls had lots of flavor and I'm interested in trying different kinds. I peeked at other people getting sashimi platters and lunches; the cuts of fish were generous and the tuna was a bright red. It was sure to be soft and melt in your mouth. After talking to other people, Miyagi is the best place to get your quality sushi in McLean without splurging too much. I love this little sushi restaurant and have been going since I was a little girl. That's almost 30 years of meals here, and not one has been less than delicious! The tofu appetizer is bomb and I've always loved the orange at the end. So refreshing! My go to order is: Alaskan roll, red devil roll, and salmon roe. Can you tell that I'm a salmon fan?.
