I haven't been into salad bars lately. Still, I like eating leafy greens made by Proper Foods. Not all ingredients in the open stayed fresh forever. At least the salad bar workers had done tirelessly their very best to serve health pursuing customers like us. I had my first salad box followed by a grilled chicken torpedo sandwich, which was all thanks to online discounts from its app. I never spend much time in its spacey atmosphere since I went for takeout. Been here from time to time throughout the years. It's not bad but definitely inferior to the likes of Evergreens, Sweetgreens, Fresh & Co or even the Uk's Salad Project. Why? It's pricey and not as tasty. The usual salad shop ingredients are here. Typical proteins, veggies, dressings and the like. I'm struggling to think of anything they have that's all that novel clamored to the competition. Maybe Caramelized onions? The taste when all put together just isn't very memorable. Their dressings play a big part here as I've never had one that stood out. I just had their peppercorn ranch dressing and it commits the cardinal sin of many ranches out there - it's more sweet than herby. Nooooo Yeah. I placed an online order of the Mandarin salad for pick up a hour in advance. When I arrived to pick up my order was not ready. The cashier was able to find my order in the system but was not sure why my salad was not made. I waited about 15 mins where she made my order in between the long line of customers she was checking out. The salad was OK, I love the organic veggies, chicken and sauce was fine. The setting is modern and inviting with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating available. My review is to provide feedback to Mixt management to improve the customer service and food portion. As a regular customer of the Berkeley Mixt location, I have experienced a decline in the portion sizes. It has never had, IMO, good customer service. If you order to go, a small size of bread comes with your order, but you have to request it. They should at least ask you if you want it. Every so often, I would sometimes come to grab a salad to-go here. I don't normally get salads all the time, but I can definitely agree this is a pretty solid place to grab a box. The service here is pretty fast. The line usually isn't too long so it's a good opportunity to come and hustle something for a quick and easy lunch. They have a pretty good list of things on the menu (with preset salad choices of course), and you can even create your own custom salad as well. I usually don't have the patience to pick out whatever I want for my salads, so I usually just pick whatever they have on their menu and go with that. And the stuff I've gotten were pretty good! I ended up getting the Falaf and Mandarin Salad. The boxes were generously packed and you can definitely be satisfied with the entire box. I also really like falafels so I definitely gravitated toward that. I also really enjoyed the tahini sauce that it comes with. Overall, pretty good place. Fast, clean, and efficient. This is not it. In terms of taste, vibes, service and price. No Ma'am. Taste - go to sweet greens. Objectively a salad is pretty standard but their dressing has no flavor. The best thing in my bowl was the tomatoes and that from nature. Vibes - they provide silverware to conserve but where do you put the silverware when you're done? There was no bucket to collect used forks (also they do a real bad job of cleaning the silverware). They have a small trash can that can fit maybe 5 of their containers and then it overflows. Flies literally everywhere. Theres 3or 4 tables in the corner that can only fit 2 people each. So no big groups. Service- This is supposed to emulate a fast food chipotle style salad place. The service is supposed to be subpar and quick. Tell me why when the worker asked for the next person (and I was the next person) they served 2 white men before me (a POC female). The two white men weren't even together. Ok if it was 1 person they didn't see me. But it was 2 the first time when she said next I raised me hand and she pointed to the guy behind me. AND IT HAPPEND AGAIN. I raised my hand and they took the order of someone behind me. EVEN WHEN I FINALLY GOT MY ORDER. They rang up 2 white people before me. Fuck this place. I recently went to Mixt Downtown for a late lunch. I have been a longtime vegan or strict vegetarian. I realize plant based options are much more popular nowadays than they were when I first became a vegan more than two decades ago. Not everyone is going to be a vegan or vegetarian yet vegetable forward is here to stay as people want to eat healthier. I love the concept of Mixt for they offer customizable design your own bowls w/ high quality plant based ingredients. The ingredients on hand feature many varieties of organic greens: mixt greens, kale, butter, lettuce, baby spinach, arugula, & romaine hearts. All the other ingredients are local & seasonal except for the roasted red peppers. Designing your bowl here is an art yet luckily I had the help of manager Anchalee who gave me some helpful tips to making my bowl. I opted for purple barley & kale as my base. I chose the following five speciality ingredients: edamame, herb roasted potatoes, roasted brussels sprouts, roasted butternut squash, & roasted mushrooms. I opted to mix in the savory mix (parsley, chives, & tarragon). To dress it up went w/ Anchalee's suggestion of the lemon tahini. Went medium dressed for it per her suggestion. Been coming here years. Generally expensive but worth it. But I MUST gripe about the bacon used in (e.g.) the Orchard. The bacon is always so undercooked that no fat is rendered out of it. Therefore, it is like eating pieces of warm fat, rather than eating bacon. Just gross. I would've sent this message to them privately, didn't see a vehicle to do that on the MIXT website. I ordered the impossible meatballs and the two sides I ordered with it were the cauliflower mash and the grilled broccoli. Here's the tea: I am not a salad gal. It's typically hard for me to stomach cold raw vegetables, don't love typical dressings, and if I'm backed against the wall and salad is the only thing I can eat I'll get the carb-iest, cheesiest, toppings, and only pick at them. Every so often I become somewhat interested in re-testing whether my disdain for salads remains. One such day I decided I would try Mixt for the first time and approached a trusty friend (Sindhu I.) to copy her go-to Mixt salad. It was a build-your-own: Mixt greens, cilantro lime vinaigrette, cherry tomatoes, parmesan, garlic herb croutons, black beans, red bell peppers, and the marinated organic tofu ("you can't forget the tofu, it's important"). Boy was it actually so good. Pricy for sure, but the portions are huge and I'm filled after one salad as I would be after an alternate meal. The salads are also consistently fresh and tasty. They prep fast. I actually become obsessed. Ordered this salad a couple days in a row. Tried other salads from other stores, but nothing has beat this. This Mixt location is now my go-to for a healthy lunch when in San Francisco... my office is around the corner, so it's a quick and easy option that tends to have something for everyone. I typically design my own salad, although I typically ponder the seasonal menu before deciding. I find the salad baristas are friendly enough and great at what they do - creating large salads made to order. Some of my favorite fresh ingredients are tomatoes, cucumber, avocado, butternut squash, garbanzo beans, brussels sprouts, chicken. I typically do the balsamic dressing (medium), but should probably to outside of my comfort zone and choose something else next time. I do wish they had some additional protein options such as ground turkey or shrimp... Even without those, however, Mixt is a way better option than I can find anywhere close to my home in Phoenix.
