I had the corned beef hash, my general test of a breakfast joint, and it was fine. My companion, a regular, had breakfast quesadilla and I had order envy. I just recently moved to Cromwell and haven't ventured out much so I decided to research what sort of restaurants are in the area. I like to support local businesses and thought I'd come here after seeing good reviews and the website. The lady who greeted me was polite and sat me down quickly. The coffee was hot but when I opened the menu, I noticed the prices were higher than the ones listed on the website. I didn't want to make a fuss so I just ordered my food anyways. I understand food costs go up but it's important for businesses to keep public information like menu prices current. When I got my food, it was not hot. It wasn't cold. Just not very hot. Lukewarm, at best. I didn't say anything as I figured maybe the kitchen was backed up. Even though I try to be understanding, I can't excuse inconsistent service. I've worked in customer service long enough to recognize when I'm not getting the same level of service as other customers. Especially when I see customers around me getting their plates cleared and they're being checked on by the server multiple times when my plates sat at my table from start to finish while they had time to laugh and joke with other customers and coworkers. I wasn't rude with the server. I was very quiet the entire time. I didn't try to take up their time. I also left a tip because I'm not the type to be spiteful. I recognize people are trying to make ends meet, especially local establishments. But if the preconceived notion was that I would be the type of customer that would not leave a tip and thats why I got the type of service I received and the idea was to let me know I'm not welcomed, message received. read more

Ok, so i'm kinda confused. Really don't know how to say this except "try harder". Friday night, i haven't taken anything out of the freezer and the kids are hungry, so i turn to the local coupon book that came in the mail and ask the kids if they want to try a new place. They say yes, and off we go. Little did i know that May 4th was mitchell's "cinco de mayo" celebration. So they had mexican specials on the menu, like tacos & enchiladas and quesadillas. The only thing wrong with that, is that they're a diner, not a mexican restaurant. I should have known better. Complementary chips were excellent, home made, deep fried corn tortillas, done right. But served with jarred salsa?? cmon guys, why take the time to make your own chips if you're gonna serve em with crap. The enchiladas were dry & soggy at the same time, i know, kind of hard to imagine. But the sauce on top was dried out from being baked in a pan then sitting, then being reheated. The chicken inside was dry as well. The tortillas were flour, not corn, so they absorbed all the sauce and water that leached from the chicken and were soggy and bloated. The rice & beans were dry as well. My daughters tacos came 3 to plate, no sides, nothing else. Straight up old el paso taco kit. Aside from them bringing my kids nametags & beads (mardi gras?), the service was lackluster. Waited 10 minutes at the door to be seated, once we ordered, nobody came back until we were finished eating to check on us. $20 after coupon. Horrible value for what we got, it seems as if you're not a regular here, they could care less about you. Best Breakfast Dinner in the area! What's my fav.? Best French toast (very homemade style), waffles, and home fries. They cup of orange juice is huge. Bacon is very good too, cook to perfection. And the price is very reasonable. Tips, if you go on a weekend around 10 AM, you probably have to wait around 20-30 min to be seated. if you go around 12:00, you are good. I don't know about if you go too early because we can never get up that early to test it out. All waitress and waiter are very very friendly, we only went twice, and the third time they already remember my chocolate milk :) Highly and highly and highly recommended! Get the Waffle! read more

Whenever I am in Connecticut, I come here every morning for breakfast. (Cromwell location) The owner is a wonderful individual and my favorite waitress Lisa always gives excellent service. This is a charming classic eatery and there is something called 'consistency' which is not found in other diners. Waffles are made with real Waffle batter and not pancake batter which is a major plus. Food is cooked to order and not sitting around in trays. read more

The Irish Benedict was good although the eggs didn't have much runny stuff left. The staff is very friendly and quite efficient for a slammed Sunday. The hollandaise sauce was perfect and the spuds were great. The seedless rye was more like wheat though. Met a dear friend here for breakfast the other morning - it's her favorite spot - and was very pleasantly surprised. It's your typical "Mom and Pop" local type of place, and apparently has a loyal following - we had to wait to be seated. The menu had some interesting specials - including a very tempting blackberry pancake - but I went for an omelet filled with feta cheese and asparagus. It wasn't overdone, like some places I've been to - it was fluffy and light, and looked incredibly appetizing. It tasted as good as it looked. I also asked for a fresh fruit bowl, which was full of pineapple, melon, watermelon, strawberries, and grapes, which was nice considering that some places serve canned fruit or serve only the cheapest fruit they can find. The prices were reasonable, which was another happy surprise. I'll be back. If you're looking for a basic, good breakfast that will satisfy at reasonable prices, this is the place. read more

My wife and I joined a group that goes here every Sunday after church, and after being in Cromwell for just over a month, I know why. The people at Mitchell's are awesome and the food is good. Plus, we bring our 8 month old baby, and he always makes a big mess. I always try and clean up as best I can when we leave, but still, it's a mess. The people that work here have never, not once, have complained about it, and usually jump to do it themselves. Sometimes restaurants aren't so kid-friendly, so it's nice to know we don't have to worry when we join the group here. Food-wise it's good. They always have come creative breakfast specials going on. I got the banana walnut pancakes and they were awesome. I've also had good club and chicken parm sandwiches here. Their curly fries are exquisite. A great local gem, and there are 3 of them within 15 mins of each other! The original is on the Silas Deane in Rocky Hill, and they run the awesome Pilot House summer shack at the ferry landing on the Rocky Hill side of the river. Mitchell's is a gem. It's that place that reminds me of when my dad and I use to go out for breakfast or lunch on Sunday's when I was little. For lunch I like any of their deli sandwiches on rye (KEY!). Toasted bread, yummy thinly sliced deli meat, and curly fries (or sweet potato!). Breakfast last week I had a Lobster Asparagus Egg's Benedict...perfection! Breakfast potatoes, toast, and those awesome mugs with the advertisements on the sides. The first few times we stopped here on the weekend for brunch I couldn't say enough good things about this place. At that point, I had only had the waffles and had only been here on a Sunday. A couple weeks ago we went for breakfast on a Monday. Much less crowded, fewer specials--all of which was expected. But it turned into one of the worst experiences I've ever had at breakfast. Formula to make this happen? Disgruntled waitress + several mistakes on the bill + canned potatoes being passed off as home fries. We didn't made a fuss over those things, but maybe we should have. It's just that I prefer breakfast not to be a battle... The waitress tossed our plates down having toast burned to a complete crisp (seriously, it was the most charred piece of toast I've ever seen in my life). It's a bit funny now because right before it came out I said, "Man, what's going on? It smells like the kitchen is on fire." Our waitress never came back once to check on us even though we could see her attending to other tables. Normally, we would never do the following but we had no choice. We finally had to ask the waitress serving the table next to us for more coffee and tea. Then we had to take our credit card to our waitress to get the bill after we waited and waited. We thought she'd at least come back for the check. Bottom line: Go here and try the waffles. Especially the chocolate chip strawberry one. Avoid egg dishes, toast, and homefries. Ick. We woke up Saturday morning and thought we`d check out a local dinner. After researching on YELP, we decided to check out Mitchel's on Main. We ordered a variety in hopes of tasting lots of yummy things.... we were sorley dissapointed. We ordered eggs benadict, a pancake, the house special (shaved potatoes, ham, onion, peppers and cheese), a biscut, oj, and a side of corned beef hash. Where to start... The house special was god awful. Burnt beyond belief. 3/4 was ineatible- burned black with greasy chease mounded on top. I can't belive they let that peice of crap out of the kitchen! It was disgusting. Seriously regretting not sending it back. Pancake- chewy, flat and tiny. Where's the yummy, fluffy buttermilk pancake??? Not here. That's for sure. Bisquick is better than that pot hole cover. Eggs benaddict- english muffin was not toasted. Halandaise had no lemon in it. Afterwards, we looked into the kitchen and saw a dirty coatainer with all of the shocked poached eggs floating in it. Gross and unsanitary. It came with potatoes that were burned and unseasoned. Biscut- dry, tastless, burned and dreanched in butter. Disgusting. Again... bisquick wins out on these. Perhaps I'm spoiled since I grew up with home made buttermilk biscuts and pancakes. Oj- acidic and from concentrate. Bleh. Corned beef hash- eadible, but how hard is it to screw that up. It came from a can and got put on the grill. Would have been better if it was HOT! This place was expensive for a diner too. $30 for a stomach ache. I can't belive how many people were croweded in there eating burned food! So dissapointed fellow yelpers. You've lead us astray. This is pretty much your classic greasy spoon-type breakfast diner. While it is always busy, we always seem just lucky enough to get a table without having to wait. The waitresses are always quick to bring coffees (THANK YOU!) which goes a long way in my book. I've gotten a variety of breakfasts here and they always seem to taste good -- good eggs, spuds, and crispy bacon (I think soggy bacon is a crime of some sort). read more

I loved this place! The service is 5 stars, the menu is 5 stars, and the price is 5 stars. I love that they appeal to basic dinner as well as brunchy folks. My mom got chicken and waffles and my dad got a classic eggs and pancakes combo and everyone was happy. Here's my only criticism: I have been searching for a place that offers hash browns and thought I finally found a place in Ct that made them. The waitress told me their version is called spuds. While their spuds certainly are wonderful, they're not hash browns and I hope one day they offer hash browns!:) read more

After our experience last saturday, my family and I will never return to mitchells. If you like slow service, forgotten food, and burnt food this is your place. My wife ordered a ruben with spuds, it came with chips instead. I was never offered a refill on my soda. My fries with my hamburger were burnt like they had been sitting in the fryer since yesterday. My daughter never got her ice cream with her kids meal. To top it off, no one came by to pick up my credit card to pay the bill. The majority of the workers were talking to eachother by the kitcken. Kudos for breakfast all day, and the service was decent, but let's be honest. The place is kept up like a dump. It's downright filthy in there. Dust caked up on the wall hangings, dried hunks of food and God knows what else in the space between the booth and the wall, a bathroom that seems as though it's not been updated since 1950 - wow. They could overcome their dirt ugly space with some simple attention to cleaning and decor. Excuse my stereotyping, but I've got to believe there is not a woman involved in ownership or senior management of this joint. Breakfast food was decent, though other offerings were somewhat limited compared to the typical diner if you're there for lunch or dinner. Not a place we'll be returning to though. read more

Our new favorite breakfast spot in Cromwell. This place has incredibly fast service and delicious breakfast dishes. The Florentine Eggs Benedict were amazing and my husband enjoyed the ridiculous amount of food that came with his special (pancakes, sausage, eggs, the works). Plenty of seating, but get their early as it tends to get very busy! There is an open kitchen allowing you to see the cooks in action, which is pretty cool. My cup of coffee was always kept fresh and hot. Would highly recommend. read more

This restaurant has pretty basic but good food. While the menu and food is nothing to write home about the items prepared are still pretty good. However, I will say that I did have a bad experience with a waiter one day who was rude to my dining party when we asked to move tables. This was a one time experience though. Was looking for a local place where I could get a quality breakfast and my friends could get lunch, and didn't want to hit up the generic diners. Knowing that the Sunday brunch hour would be busy anywhere, I expected a long wait. I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly we were sat. The place was packed and the food took a little while to get to us, but we were promptly served with coffee and beverages which were topped off regularly while we waited. The food did not disappoint! Two of us got specials, the others got regular menu items and requested a few alterations. No problem! This is, by far, my favorite diner in CT. The staff is always super friendly and even though they're very busy on the weekends, they work hard to get you your food quickly. Anytime I bring my daughter, they come by with crayons & coloring books. Just very accommodating overall. They have a fairly large menu of specials every weekend (at least 10+ meals) and I've not been disappointed. The food is tasty and it's very reasonably priced. I ate at Mitchell's for the first time this past weekend due to a family friend recommendation. My family lives in the area and it seemed family friendly enough to bring a one year old. We all ordered the eggs Benedict and while the egg was perfectly poached the sauce was lacking. As someone who makes her own sauce, I found theirs to be too buttery and it needed more cayenne and lemon juice to give it a kick. It was ok but I've made and had better. The wait wasn't bad but this is coming from someone who lived in NYC so 15 minutes is nothing for me. I liked the high chair that was given and my son loved his pancake and scrambled eggs. I will be back though cause the service was great, it's like to try something else on the menu, and it's a good place to take kids. read more
