I thought there would be a wait once inside. Happily, I was seated right away. Liz provided caffeine. I was intrigued by the menu cover listing Croissant French Toast Breakfast. Considering the crowd, I was amazed by how fast the food came from the kitchen. Less than 10 minutes, and perfectly prepared. Traditionally, you expect a diner that is off the highway and advertises on the highway to be open somewhat late. This one closes at 8pm. We walked in at 7:25pm and were told it was too late to be seated. That is ridiculous. read more

It's a great diner in Connecticut. The waffles from Belgium are good, you can add butter and syrup and to put sugar on the unsweetened iced tea to make it taste like Gold Peak. They made the food very good and fresh. It's pretty epic. Also, that diner is fire! read more

I stopped at Cromwell Diner after a 3-hour drive on the Saturday before Easter, expecting a simple breakfast. What I experienced instead was disorganized, dismissive, and honestly unacceptable. As a Black woman who does not eat pork, I made a clear and reasonable request: I asked if they could guarantee no cross-contamination between turkey and pork. This is not an unusual ask -- and your own menu literally tells customers to inform the server of any food accommodations. I was immediately told, "we can't guarantee that." No attempt to offer alternatives, no effort to work with me, nothing. Then the story changed. One waitress told me there was no manager available. Another waitress came over and said they do guarantee accommodations. So which is the truth? Because from my perspective, it felt like I was being dismissed rather than helped. Let's be clear -- when a business advertises accommodations but then refuses to stand on that when a customer actually needs it, that's a problem. When staff give completely different answers and no one takes ownership, that's a bigger problem. And when a Black woman raises a legitimate dietary concern and is met with confusion and a lack of effort, it doesn't feel neutral -- it feels disrespectful. After a 3-hour drive, that was the last thing I needed. I left without ordering. If you're going to say you accommodate customers, then do it -- consistently, clearly, and respectfully. My "California omelet" came out cold with lumps of hard old bacon inside and cold avocado, resembling something from the Exorcist. My toast was burnt too. I love this diner. The breakfast menu offers some nice additions that you wouldn't expect to see at a diner. Everything had a fresh taste. The wait staff was friendly and conversational. I didn't have to request any refills for my coffee because the waitress checked in and refilled without prompting. I ordered the try 2 menu which I love because it mixes in breakfast and lunch items. My choice was unconventional. I had clam chowder, eggs Benedict on a crabcake, and I ordered a pancake on the side. Not too many places allow you to add just one pancake. The clam chowder is made fresh daily and the veggies were perfect- had a hint of crunch. They were able to substitute my eggs over hard to my liking and that was such a great concept (Eggs with hollaindaise and old bay over top a crabcake and English muffin). Everything tasted great and I had leftovers that my children loved. My friend loved her food as well and we even split some home fries. This year I came during lunch and was craving a salad (per usual). Food quality? 10/10. Packing? 10/10. I ordered from Cromwell Diner 5 out of the 7 days that I was visiting. While the food is always tasty and amazing, the quality, preparation, and sometimes the service is different. This is a garden Greek salad and loaded breakfast potatoes that I ordered Wednesday. It looked and tasted amazing. But by the time the weekend came, unfortunately service and preparation took a hit. While I wasn't a fan of the restaurant over the weekend, I enjoyed them Monday through Thursday. I've only taken photos of the food from Wednesday. And I will say the food that I was served from Monday through Wednesday looked like this. I will definitely be back bc they have the BEST Greek salad that I've had in a very long time. In addition the wait staff are incredibly friendly and always come around to see if we need anything! I love diners, and Cromwell Diner was one of the few open on a Sunday evening. If I'm going to a diner, you can bet I'm either getting breakfast or a burger. If you know me at all, you know I am all about the burger! The first thing I noticed was the amazing lawn out front. Whoever they have for landscaping is doing an outstanding job. Second, there are tables outside if you want to grab your meal and eat outside. My server was Lionel L, and he was great. Attentive without being over the top. I was seated quickly, served quickly, ate quickly, and was out the door in 35-40 minutes. I got the 1/2 lb 'Name Your Burger' that came with fries, and both were delicious. I added bacon for an extra charge and ordered a strawberry shake. I ended it all with a piece of chocolate layer cake, which Lionel offered to top with whipped cream and chocolate sauce. Naturally, I assented. I have to be honest that the cake was good, but not great. It was a little dry and tasted like one of those frozen cakes from a box. What a disappointing experience. The manager was extremely rude from the very start. I was talking to the hostess, explaining that our group would be dining together but that everyone would be paying their own check -- and he jumped in, talking over her in a very disrespectful way. When I asked if he was refusing to give us service, he fake laughed and, with a sarcastic tone, said "It's up to you," instead of simply helping us get a table. That kind of attitude is completely unprofessional and unnecessary. What was supposed to be a nice meal with friends -- even though we're not always seated together -- was ruined by this guy before we even sat down. No server or manager should ever talk or act that way, or get stressed out over split checks. Money is money, and yes, we are good tippers if that was their concern. But The real issue was the lack of communication and professionalism on his part. Screw this place -- we walked out upset . Worst customer service experience we had in Connecticut. This is a diner that should be boycotted by anyone with a social conscience but in particular anyone with a disability. Diner could not provide dietary information for a diabetic child to determine what the child could eat, but even more astonishing was the fact they refused to allow the child to bring in a muffin for his breakfast while others would order from their menu. The ignorance and insensitivity demonstrated by the manager/owner is disgraceful and shameful to say the least and for this reason I urge not to support this establishment. They are terrible community citizens that need to educate themselves on how to treat people with medical challenges. read more

Got takeout recently at Cromwell diner. Ordered the crabcake dinner which came with two sides. I selected the salad and tomato soup for my sides. It was $19. When I got home, there were two small crabcakes in a small container with lettuce garnish, and a side of sauce. It was like an appetizer. And the soup came in a normal sized small soup container, but it was only half full! Like it was literally probably about 3/4 of a cup of soup. The salad was fine. It was so surprising. I even called about it, and they laughed and admitted that it was embarrassing that their crabcake dinner only contains two small crabcakes. Walked in at 8a and was seated immediately. I perused the menu and settled on my staple...PANCAKES with a meaty omelet and coffee. It was GOOOOD! My companion ordered a muffin and fruit cup. I recently came with my husband and ordered seasonal Pumpkin Spice Pancakes with a side of home fries. The pancakes were fluffy, flavorful and big - I couldn't finish them. Came here with my mother and sister after a family workout sesh on a Saturday. We were all feeling steak and eggs but didn't want to make it so decided to give this place a try after seeing an ad in the highway. We were seated promptly and water was brought within seconds after seating. Our server took our order and food was brought promptly and as ordered. My sister and I both got medium well steak with 3 over easy eggs. My mom opted for the steak and veggie of the day which was broccoli and a salad. We had a terrible experience at Cromwell diner today. Our hockey team came here after a game. The kids all sat at a table, and the parents sat at another table. The manager even helped putting the adult tables together. we requested to use the kids jersey numbers for the bill, as this is what we have always done. We were told it was not possible. groups over 20 were not permitted. We were told all the kids at one table HAD to be 1 payment, and the adults at the other table HAD to be 1 payment. They will NOT allow multiple payments at 1 table, only 1 transaction allowed. The manager wanted to sit us each individually, and separate us, which he ended up doing. Ive never experienced this EVER!!!! I ended up at a table with 2 other payers. We went to the till with 3 payments and they REFUSED them!! our server was kind, the menu was great, and our food was delicious. its too bad they have such an idiot manager with stupid rules, as we will not be returning. I just wanted to warn other friends, family's and teams that this is not where you want to go. its inconvenient to not split payment. They need to reconsider their stupid policy and make changes, as its going to effect their business. read more

They seemed to be understaffed, or contain an underutilized staff, and we knew we were in trouble when they handed pre-made numbers to us for the pleasure of getting on the wait list. Once seated, our server was inattentive and forgetful. We had to ask for the basics, such as place settings, she forgot my whole milk for the coffee, she needed to be reminded to give us plates for our shared appetizer, and I got through 2 cups of coffee before our meal was delivered. The server was apologetic, and I gave her a more than fair tip, but it was undeserving. Their menu has diner-staple options to please nearly anyone and is only further enhanced by the ability to order off the breakfast menu all day. Our group opted for a couple tuna melts, a chicken salad melt, and a chicken tender platter. All of these came to the table ridiculously quickly and had heaping portions of sides - I couldn't get through all the tater tots myself (they were perfectly done btw). This place has been recommended highly and we finally got to try them out. We went on a Tuesday afternoon and the place was very calm with few customers. When you walk in, you notice immediately just how neat and clean everything is. I liked that even though it's a diner, it did not smell like grease and oil being fried in the kitchen like most diners do. Our food was very good, nice sized portions and plenty of flavor. I was very impressed by the quality and quantity which was enough to fill you up. The prices weren't bad either, with each of our entrees being less than $20. Even the Coca Cola was that "good Coke," you know... the one that's a little extra sweet and fresher than others. I also liked that their menu is diverse with enough options, but it doesn't have TOO much either. I'd definitely check this place out again. Travelling in Conneticut stopped into the Diner in Cromwell. The place has a nice fresh appearance on the outside and plenty of parking. The inside is typical diner decor with some nice retro art and touches. The menu is rypical - lots of breakfast choices- served all day, butgers, wraps, salads, sandwiches , hot and cold and entree dinners like meatloaf , turkey , fish and chips and more. We opted for the Chicken Salad with fruit and the Shepards pie. Both were served promptly. Portion size was large. The Shepards pie was piping hot. While very tasty it was more potatoes than meat. The Chicken Salad was slightly to the dry side, but very tasty. When it came time for dessert we discovered they did not have any of the cakes or piea on the menu. They did have a Lemon pie- we declined. The staff was friendly and the meal was tasty but nothing to write home about. Good comfort food could use some improvement. read more

We stopped into the Cromwell Diner on our way up to Boston, and it was a blast from my prior college days when I used to do the same. The dining area was completely renovated, leaving it now modern and super clean. The staff was friendly and speedy. I ordered some black coffee, which was rich, flavorful, and continuously refilled. My Grilled Chicken Greek Salad was phenomenal! The all-natural chicken was tender and flavorful. It was served over a bed of iceberg and romaine lettuce, as well as traditional toppings like feta cheese, Kalamata olives, grape tomatoes, cucumbers, pepperoncini, and red onions. A side of garlicky Greek dressing allowed me to pour the perfect amount over my healthy lunch. The quality of the food at the Cromwell Diner far exceeded typical diner fare. read more
