Went to Carmela's on the Extension for breakfast on a Saturday. We arrived around 11:00am. The vibe is a mix between a nostalgic diner and a local hangout. We were seated right away. Our waitress, I don't think she told us her name, was extremely attentive, checking on us multiple times. We inquired about the bottomless mimosa and she also recommended the mimosa flight and made great suggestions on flavors!! We ordered two flights, one traditional, Tiffany, Margarita and a pomegranate. The other flight was a traditional, Tiffany, peach mango, and blueberry lemon. For our breakfast entrees we ordered Hash & Eggs and a Veggie omelette with a side of bacon. Each order came with a tiny back with the Carmela's brand, which was really cute!! We also ordered a side of cheesy grits. They came in a good sized crock which was more than enough for two. They were okay, but definitely were not cheesy. Came here on a Sunday around 1pm and we got seated immediately. Huge menu. Standard diner food. I love crepes, so I tried their special which was egg and cheese crepes. This was fine but the crepes were more like pancakes so I just unrolled them and put syrup on them. My friend got a single buttermilk pancake, no complaints. I like that they had different syrup flavors. Eggs were ordered over easy but we're way undercooked. Potatoes were very hard. Waitress was a bit rude with us throughout our meal and I even felt like she threw our check at us. I think this place may be used to their regulars and don't know how to talk to new customers. Decided to give Carmela's another chance by taking our kids to their Breakfast with Santa event. While they were short handed that day, the people that were on staff were friendly and trying their best to handle the massive crowd. The wait was a bit long, but with a small kitchen and that crowd, my food was worth the wait. No garlic taste where it shouldn't be. Delicious, huge, fluffy pancakes. Excellent breakfast sausage. (Last visited 3/27/2021.) Well, it must be a streak of bad brunches brewing because this is 2 in a row. A friend of ours found out this place serves bottomless mimosas during Sunday brunch so we had to try it out! Here's how it went... Atmosphere/Appearance: From the outside this place sort of looks like a house. There is a small private parking lot around the side, but there is plenty of street parking right out front that you never really have to pay for. Once inside you can choose to sit upstairs which is nicely decorated, bright, vibrant and lively or you can sit in the basement... Down there it sort of felt like the "overflow" section. It was essentially a finished basement with a decent amount of decoration, but there was an additional bar down there too! Service: It wasn't the best. There seemed to be a disconnect with a lot of the things we were looking for. So obviously we were there for bottomless mimosas, but they took quite a while to check on us between drinks. Our server had to run up and down the stairs to get our drinks, but I did mention there was a bar downstairs... Why weren't they using that? It would've made things much faster seeing as there were 4 of us. But wait for it... they cut us off at FOUR MIMOSAS. That's right. You thought the cutting us off at 7 was bad like in my review of Jealous Monk? Nah, FOUR. Did the bartender think were were children or something? Like, do people who own restaurants that have bottomless mimosas actually participate in bottomless mimosas themselves to know that people CAN DRINK? FOUR. The good news is... one of our friends knew the owner and the owner happened to be there so we were able to continue with our drinking. What if we hadn't been so lucky? Food: The mimosas were decent and for my entrée I went with the Steak Fajita Bowl from the lunch menu. It's sirloin steak, rice, tomatoes, corn, mushrooms, peppers, onions & cilantro all served in a very presentable glass dish. The portion was a bit small, but for the price it made sense. I did enjoy my food and would just order 2 of these next time. Value: My fajita bowl was only $9.90. Say what?! Them's fast-food prices, but the food was worth way more than that! I can't remember how much the mimosas were, but they weren't more than $20.00. In conclusion, I may have been a little harsh on this place, but I take my brunches seriously! Lol. Maybe they just weren't ready for my brunch crew to put their system to the test. Maybe they've gotten better? Who knows, but... I'm not opposed for coming back here to try them out again. I had been wanting to try this place for a long time because of all the delicious looking reviews I saw. It's hard to find a good place that serves biscuits and gravy and I was so excited to give this place a shot. The food was decent, but seemed to lack a little flavor is some aspects. Their portion sizes are huge which I thought was awesome and you get a great deal for the price. The atmosphere was a little off though. We sat downstairs and it was awkwardly silent, no music or anything on. I will say the waitress down there was a rockstar though. Carmela'a was such an awesome surprise for me. My first time here and the second you walk in you are submersed in happy red paint everywhere. And C's! I like it. We were sat at the bar and it was such a fun place to sit. You really get to see and hear all of the action going on. Fun! Janet was our server and she was just great! I ended off getting two specials from the chalkboard and my friend ordered the biscuits and gravy. We started with an order of cherry almond coconut pancakes topped with whipped cream. Their pancakes are huge! And really delicious! What an awesome surprise at how good they are and that flavor combo was amazing. I also got the Cuban Panini special and it was great as well- pulled pork, ham, cheese, pickle and mustard. I would totally recommend it if is a special when you visit. It came with fries. I really wanted to like my food but the big issue is they don't seem to season anything. I got take out and the inside is really cute and spacious. But the eggs, homefries and fried chicken were so bland it was shocking. The best thing was the biscuits and gravy. How have I not been here sooner! What a SCORE! I ended up getting two pancakes (in my defense one was for me and the other for my growing baby belly) - a raspberry drizzle and white chocolate blueberry. I vote for the later yet both with delish. My dad and husband got egg Benedict's. And mom got the lemon poppy seed French toast, which was my second fav item. Service was good, waitresses were very attending and kind on both of my visits. Their breakfast is good! No complaints at all, and very consistent. However, on a separate visit my table ordered two burgers. They were incredibly bland, and the buns were freezing cold. Fries were good, just your typical freezer crinkle fries. I recently moved back to Middletown. So I ordered from here! I have not order food from here in since the first year they open. I ordered a steak fajita omelette( which was not an omelette. It was a big fried egg with chunks of steak with the veggies folded inside of the fried egg. I called to let them know! I had the option to come back or wait for a later date. I choose the later date. 1/31 I called to order my food. Spoke on the previous situation and me calling and my name being written down! They were just rude, yelling and arguing with me about my order! They asked me was I bringing the old omelette back ( I guess I was suppose to save it from 3 weeks ago). Over all my experience was horrible from the rude lady who answer the phone and then called my phone back! read more

Not super impressed with this place. Parking lot is tiny so I had to drive around to get a spot. I almost didn't go in and wish I had listened to my instinct. I waited at the front for the hostess to seat me (like the sign said). Since I was alone she said I could go have a seat at the breakfast bar. There was a young guy sitting the 2d chair in and I didn't want to sit right next to him, so I moved to the other side. This very rude waitress said: well if you give me a minute I will clear this up. The hostess should have told you where to go. I told her the hostess DID tell me to have a seat here. I almost left but it was getting late in the brunch window (they close at 2 and it was 12:30). Thankfully this rude waitress was not my waitress! All she did was stand there talking trash about the other waitresses and one in particular who was apparently downstairs "sitting on her ass". Mind you this waitress was standing up there not doing much of anything but gossiping and being rude to customers. Biscuits and gravy. No biscuits. Gravy pretty lame (aka pretty watery) and tasteless esp someone from the south who knows what it's supposed to taste like. The "home fries" were pretty tasteless and several times I regretted my decision to stay. The 3 stars goes to my waitress Francesca who was sweet and made sure my coffee was filled. She smiled and thanked me for coming in. The other older heavy set waitress needs to learn some manners. I've returned to Carmela's several times over the last couple of years since my last review, and I can honestly say they serve an excellent consistent meal. Breakfast options are plentiful, interesting specials, and the service has been getting better and better. They offer a lot of options from your standard 'diner' -style breakfasts to your atypical dishes. I personally like all the varieties and regional flairs they add to eggs benedict. I've lived in Middletown for five years and only recently did I go to Carmela's for the first time...I have been missing out! I took my grandparents to Carmela's on the Extension for breakfast one morning, as they wanted waffles/pancakes and I am so glad I did. I've driven by this restaurant multiple times a day for the past few years and always thought about stopping in, but never did. It's small, has a small parking lot, and I hate to admit this...but I overlooked it based on size. When we parked and went in, it was cozy and pretty busy. The menu had a lot of fantastic options, but we went with omelettes and a nutella strawberry waffle to split. The omelette and home fries was fantastic and let me tell you...we should have gotten more waffles to share. It was PERFECT! I'm a big dessert for breakfast person and this waffle blew me away. I would eat here every day if I could (I technically can, but I'll continue covering my eyes when I drive by so I don't stop). If you like good breakfast food and hospitality, you have to give Carmela's a try! read more

Heard good things so a couple of friends and I decided to check it out. Food: average. Nothing too special. Pretty much the same options you would get an any breakfast place. Eggs could have been cooked longer but the sausage and pancakes were really good. Service: wait time was very short. Servers were friendly high school teenagers. Parking is kind of tricky. Breakfast was very good. Usually we go to Mitchell's, but I think we've found our new spot for breakfast.

I live nearby but hadn't tried Carmela's because it's easy to miss when driving by. I decided to have breakfast for lunch today at 1:30pm, just before closing time: blueberry pancake (singular, but covered the whole plate), sausage links, fruit cup, coffee. Everything was fresh and top-notch: the pancake nicely thick and satisfying, the fruit ripe and flavorful, real maple syrup, the sausage juicy and not over-salted or dry, a bit of whipped cream on the side, even the coffee was excellent. The space is inviting and quirky (it was a jazz club and the little stage remains), there is no blaring music (thank god: you can hear yourself think), there's a tv on in one corner (but sound off, close-captioned), the bathroom is spotless, and the staff friendly and helpful. Definitely a keeper and I will be back often. There's a connection to Jerry's pizza, evidently, another friendly Middletown gem that favors quality. read more

This review is for the banquet room downstairs in this restaurant. I want to give them 3.5 stars, here are the pros and cons: Pros: Nice space downstairs that can fit a few good size tables. Attended a baby shower of probably about 80 people. There's a bar downstairs, and while our event wasn't alcoholic, I'm assuming you could make it so if you wanted. The food was actually fantastic. We had chicken Parmesan, a nice salad, bread, corn on the cob, potatoes, penne pasta. Everyone thought the food was super delicious. They don't let you bring a cake in from an outside vendor but their cake was actually fantastic and beautifully decorated. Frosting wasn't too sweet and cake was moist, very yummy. Coffee (great) and tea were also offered at the bar. Cons: Service. While the service was ok, in terms of refilling food and people serving drinks, I can't get over how freezing it was downstairs. We literally had to put our coats back on it was so cold. It wasn't warm outside either. When I finally asked the staff if they could turn down the AC because they felt the need to blast it, I was told because there were so many people in the room, it would get hot. I'm sorry, but while that is true, it doesn't make it ok to have a room basically at 50 degrees. There are better ways to manage or at least let it warm up and turn the AC back on. While the woman said she would turn it down, I don't ever think she did. With several people with coats on and shivering, they could've done this better. read more
