For a few year I've driven by and seen the colorful elephant in front of EggsUp on rt 66. I saw they have biscuits and gravy so we finally decided to get it a try. The lady in the front of house was nice. The prices very good. Every thing else had a difficult time getting to fair. The was little to no sausage in the sausage gravy and zero taste. The biscuit was an undercooked gloopy mess. My wife had the corned beef hash. Looked and tasted just like the canned stuff. We can say we finally checked it out but won't be going back. read more

I've driven by here several times but finally stopped in while visiting CT and the service was great. The food was also delicious and they had the best home fries I've had in years- the perfect amount of crisp! The specialty coffees are also pretty good. Wonderful restaurant! It's been years since I've been, but I'm so glad I came back. The menu is great, and I love that they have a whole gluten-free section with options like French toast, sandwiches, and pancakes! Eggs Up is a small place, not far from highway and easy to get too. It has its own lot as well which is very convenient. The inside has quite a few tables but it does get busy busy . Service is quick, the food is fresh, and the staff is super friendly. You really can't beat the prices either. It's first come, first served, but we didn't have to wait long at all. Gave Eggs Up a second shot, and this visit was a much better experience. We came in around noon on a Saturday, and thankfully it wasn't packed like last time. Service was a highlight--our waitress was running the floor solo but still managed to be super friendly and quick. Big props to her! I kept it classic with eggs, toast, and home fries. Simple, but done right--comforting, flavorful, and hit the spot. Other tables had some seriously tasty-looking dishes, so clearly there's more to explore here. Also appreciated that the prices were reasonable--especially in this post-COVID world where breakfast can cost more than dinner. This is a small, quaint place who seems to be 'stuck in time'. The silverware, decor reflects an era decades ago. Seems like there are regular customers as the servers know their name. One incident, however, left a negative impression, thus this review. The food is average, nothing fancy, nothing more. We frequented this place a lot; mostly on weekends and sometimes during the week. This particular weekday, my husband ordered "hot tea" for me (I drink green tea). We weren't asked what kind of tea, rather, were just given Lipton black tea. I then asked "may I have hot green tea". The server, who is also the owner, gave me a look (that my husband saw-as she was behind my back when this occurred). Cute little breakfast spot. Wait was a little long, but when we saw how tiny the space was, we understood. Menu had a pretty decent selection of savory and sweet. I tried one of the specials, cinnamon roll French toast. My boyfriend wanted to try the house-made hash, but they were out of it and made him some canned corned beef hash instead. Eggs Up has a pretty extensive gluten free menu, which I love. We've tried omelets, pancakes, and the corned beef hash. The gluten free pancakes are delicious, and I love that it comes with a breakfast meat- definitely go for bacon. The prices are super reasonable. Great little spot on the side of a main road. The place is spacious but def a mom and pop. A mix between old diner and small restaurant. They have a little top area that you can sit if you don't want a table. They also offer small candy for sell and donate the money. Service is fenomenal and the food is delicious. Cool little spot in Portland with that classic diner feel. Great food with great prices that has the hometown feel to it. Local businesses featured on the coffee mugs and place mats; I love the support for their backyard businesses throughout the county. I went here with my friends who just purchased a new home and farmland right down the road. This was within walking distance of it. I ordered the eggs Benedict with ham on an English muffin. Poached eggs were awesome and my group all enjoyed their food. Clean plates all around, one which I helped to polish off. Overall, not terribly impressed, although there were some good points to the visit. I'm from out of state, and stopped here with the wife while on a motorcycle ride Sunday morning. We saw the tent outside, and got a table without waiting, which was nice, since we were in a bit of a hurry. The waitress serving the outdoor tables provided good (although basic), service, in a timely manner. My wife and I both ordered corned beef hash (which the menu stated was homemade), with eggs and toast. Perhaps the main reason for the low rating was that the corned beef hash was very disappointing, both in flavor and texture. I had never had corned beef hash anything like theirs before (unfortunately, I don't mean that in a good way). It was very bland, and the 'corned beef' was cut into small cubes, almost like a diced ham steak. It was mixed with diced potatoes, which seemed fried in stale oil, and overcooked to boot. Coffee was equally uninspired. Thankfully, the eggs and toast were much better, and salvaged the meal. Dining outdoors, one must expect a no-frills atmosphere, which is fine, but dodging a very persistent yellowjacket put a damper on the experience. We had assumed they were closed to indoor dining due to the Covid, but we later found out we could have dined indoors. If we are in the area again on a ride, I would probably ride on. read more

Me and my partner ordered an appetizer of biscuits and gravy and waitress came out with 2 which we never asked for! Of course we got charged for that. My partner got one of the big breakfasts and asked for a specialty pancake instead of the regular ones it came with. Waitress came out with his big breakfast with the regular pancakes AND another plate of the specialty pancakes (6 pancakes!!) He told her it wasn't what he ordered and she gave us some attitude back saying he didn't specifically say he wanted a subsitution although he did just used a different word! This restaurant is probably best known for their elephant greeter in front of their building. I have used that elephant, when giving directions to people, many times over the years. You can't help but to smile, when you see this cheerful guy. What you may not know, is that they offer an extensive gluten free breakfast menu. So many people that I know, complain that they have a hard time finding something gluten free, when eating out. Here, there is a whole page of yummy options. If you're a hash lover like me and my husband, I think that you'll like Eggs Up's version. It's a great chop size, not mushy like some. Be sure to ask for the homemade, because they do offer canned as well. My husband had the Irish Benedict, I ordered the homemade hash & eggs and the little guy had a pancake. The meals came out quick and hot. The hash was spot on and my poached eggs were perfectly cooked. The Benedict came out perfect and was consumed quickly. My son enjoyed his pancake. Just started going here a few months ago with my daughter for Sunday breakfast. Wanted to wait to see if the first trip was an aberration or not. it wasn't. GREAT BREAKFAST, I'm not an egg eater but my daughter and wife are and they both loved theirs. Omelet was cooked perfectly and so was the Benedict. Now for me , Ive had the Blueberry Pancakes and the French toast both right on point. perfectly cooked and just the right amount of blueberries. Thats important , too many and it doesn't cook right. The home fries are AMAZING and the bacon is always cooked perfectly, i normally have to be specific about how i like my bacon cooked ( I like to chew bacon not have it explode in my mouth) but forgot to say anything on my first visit. I don't have a lot to say about Eggs Up Grill...other than it was...fine. This place has been on our to do list for a while, since we live in Middletown and it's not too far away in Portland. I've never understood the bizarre elephant out front, and the odd placement directly across from what looks like Bates Motel can scare you away a little bit too. But when a friend of my husband's was raving about the pumpkin French toast on Facebook, we knew we had to try it. We walked in and it was several minutes before anyone spoke to us. It's not clear what you should do upon entering. There is really nowhere to stand, but all of the empty tables had not yet been cleared. Do I sit at a table full of plates? Do I stand awkwardly in the entryway, blocking the servers from passing by? We chose the latter and it was almost humorous how long we were ignored, seeing as we were totally and completely in everyone's way. Finally a server told us to "sit wherever" and we ended up sitting at a dirty table. After a few minutes, I found myself flicking the prior party's old home fries off the table myself, as I couldn't take sitting there staring at them, wondering if I'd stick my arm in it. Finally someone came over and wiped down the table and offered us drinks. The menus are on the table, so they're nice and sticky! We both opted for specials, I got the pumpkin bread french toast stuffed with pumpkin cream cheese (noted as delicious!!!! on the menu) served with cinnamon sugar butter and choice of bacon or sausage for $8.95. My husband got the "egg-ceptional benedict" with Canadian bacon, spinach and feta served on an english muffin and topped with hollandaise, served with home fries for $7.95. The drinks arrived quickly, as did the food. I was given a refill on my water but my husband never got a refill on his coffee. A woman at the table behind us stood up and actually yelled for a waitress in order to get her coffee refilled, and even then, they didn't offer it to other tables in the area. The food was fine. It wasn't great, it wasn't awful. The corned beef hash - homemade available only on the weekends - was odd. It had peppers in it and I'm a purist. I don't want to taste red roasted peppers, I like it to be corned beef and potatoes and maybe some onion and seasoning. The peppers were overwhelming. My husband liked it, but I just didn't think it was a classic corned beef hash. The eggs benedict were good - lacking seasoning, but that was fixed with some salt. The feta was an odd flavor combination, didn't really complement the hollandaise well...but luckily, there wasn't that much there. The pumpkin bread french toast was not the hit I wanted it to be. It's what drew us in there and it was mediocre. It was mushy, like it had been cooked earlier and reheated. The bacon (which I requested extra crispy) was chewy, like it had been cooked earlier and then heated in the microwave. I ate my meal, but I didn't love it. And I wanted to love it! The prices aren't cheap and they'll charge you $1.50 to use your credit card. If I'm spending $25 on breakfast, I want to be able to charge it. Set a minimum so that the folks buying the 2 eggs and toast for $4 have to pay cash...but don't force me to bring cash or pay a premium when I'm spending so much. It's not cute or charming when restaurants are not credit card friendly these days. When I look at it all in totality, it's unlikely we'll be back. I guess if you have the misfortune of staying at the Riverdale Motel in Portland, Eggs Up Grill would make for a convenient breakfast. read more

Went here yesterday it is a small place. I'd you have more than four people seating may be an issue. When I was there a few folks were having cross table conversations after they were done which normally I would never comment on but since we had to wait longer I am. The food is just average. I've had this restaurant bookmarked for quite a while and drive by it all the time. I finally had a chance to get a late breakfast with my youngest daughter. What do you think was the first thing she noticed about this restaurant? Right! The elephant! She also loved the little hotdog statue that she now calls "the ketchup man". This restaurant is small and casual. Every bit of space it utilized for as much storage as possible, dressers, refrigerators, wherever they can fit things throughout the dining room, hallway, and bathrooms to fit all the things they need, it truly makes you feel like you've simply gone to Auntie Franny's house for a nice homemade breakfast. The restaurant was clean and comfortable and we definitely felt like family while we were there. My daughter was thrilled that she was given some crayons to color with on her place mat while we waited for our order. I ordered an Irish omelette with a side of bacon and my daughter asked for 1 egg, 1 piece of toast, 1 pancake, and bacon(she pretty much wanted 1 of everything lol). Our food came out quickly and it was delicious. We were very happy with the wonderful and quick service here. Don't bother. I assume you need to be a local to love this place, but it was extremely disappointing. After much deliberation, I decided on the steak and eggs. My server informed me that the price of the meal had gone up $2, which is actually 20%! That's a big increase. Apparently all of our meal prices went up, it just wasn't reflected until we got the bill. The eggs and sausage were good....pancakes not so much. Service was pretty bad. Arrived at a slower business time. Place was half full. Sat fairly quickly. No idea who my server was, she didn't introduce herself. Received my coffee a mere ten minutes after sitting. Order was taken after 13 minutes. Received scrambled eggs, toast, bacon and home fries a full 25 minutes after sitting. Yup, 25 minutes to get toast and eggs. Bacon had been held way too long. Home fries were ok, could have been crispier. Eggs were fine. Toast was dry and cold. Slow, not so great service, food average at best. We stopped on a Sunday morning. We must have passed this little place over 1,000 times over the years, but it's out of our way. The place is small. You can sit anywhere there is a clean table if there isn't a wait. The menus on the table are sticky with syrup. The special menu was on the table as well. The waitress came and took our coffee order and sad she would come right back to take our order. The cups are clever, some about "a crack." This part really annoys me. If you have a special menu and you are out of something, say so when you get to the table. Don't wait for the customer to decide on a special only to find out that it's not available. He ordered the homemade hash, I ordered the Italian omlette. Then the waitress tells us that they are out of homemade hash but, " would you like the canned hash?" If we wanted canned hash, we could have stayed home. Seriously. Two Italian omlettes later, it was ok. Nothing special. It really lacked the sun dried tomatoes that were advertised. And the ones that actually made it to the omlette were rather tasteless. Potatoes were average...nothing special. Coffee was refilled and we were done. Here is why the 1 rating. We were at the register waiting for the waitress behind us to finish taking an order from a new group who had just come in. The man asks about the hash. The waitress yelled into the kitchen and the chef told her that there was one more order left. Ok so why didn't our waitress ask the chef when we ordered....lazy? bad customer service? Saving it for a regular? Whatever the reason, it's just not good business. Needless to say,,,the tip was altered and we left.
