There are restaurants where you walk out and say "this place must have incredible management." Mission BBQ is one of them. We were greeted upon arrival and given a rundown of the menu options along with staff recommendations. Not only was the food served hot and delicious, we were gifted an extra piece of cornbread to prevent marital problems. Our 2 year old happily devoured pulled pork while coloring. Staff members were super friendly, checking in with us multiple times throughout our stay and interacting with our toddler. On top of this, the staff used their downtime between customers (we were having lunch at an atypical time) to keep the bathroom amazingly clean. I'll give them one extra star because the staff was actually friendly and professional. Service was probably the only good part of the experience. But the food itself was honestly disappointing. The BBQ tasted bland, dry, and nowhere near worth the prices they charge. For a place that talks so much about authentic American BBQ, military pride, veterans, patriotism, and all the "support our heroes" branding, I expected way better food. Instead it felt like the atmosphere and marketing mattered more than what was actually on the plate. The military and first responder theme is everywhere, but after a while it starts feeling more like a marketing gimmick than a restaurant focused on quality BBQ. Even online, a lot of people seem to say the same thing -- overpriced food, average BBQ, and too much forced patriotic branding. If the food matched the hype, maybe it would make sense. Stopped in for a quick lunch. When you first walk in the smell of bbq makes your mouth water. The menu has a lot to choose from. We ordered the meat sampler that came with two meats and two sides and the kids bbq ribs that came with one side. Everything was delicious. The meat was flavorful. I've driven by the Mission BBQ on Semoran Avenue in Orlando plenty of times but never stopped to try their food. Well, 800 miles away, there's a Mission BBQ right next to my hotel in Virginia. So, I asked myself... why not? Could this be a sign I should give them a try? I walked in, and the first thing you notice is all the military and first responder memorabilia everywhere, which they support through fundraisers. Great ambiance, and the staff seemed to really love what they do. I went with the three-meat plate with mac and cheese and baked beans. I loved the option to choose which part of the brisket you prefer...in my case, the point. Super moist and packed with flavor. I also added the jalapeño sausage, and wow... they were incredible! About a 6 minute walk from Embassy Suites hotel. Tried the meat sampler to check out their food. Ribs were good, moist, tender and tasty. Can be eaten on its own but enhanced with the sauces. Speaking of sauces, there's 6 choices available on the table, which one to choose? Just pour 3 or 6 of them all at the same time and make your own dipping sauce or just pour them on the meat!!! I've been here twice now and it's been great both times. Definitely recommend trying them out. The food is good here. I got the pulled pork both times. It was pretty good but can be dry without any bbq sauce. The jalapeño cheddar sausage was good but. It the best I've had. The brisket is very good. I get the moist brisket and it is really flavorful. The rub they put on it before it's cooked is present and really cooks into the meat. The mac and cheese is delicious! It's my favorite side to order. The baked beans are definitely second. They're sweet and Smokey. The green beans are okay but nothing to write home about. The cornbread is usually pretty tasty but can be a little dry. My girlfriend gets the lean brisket and warns that it can be dry sometimes so take that into account if you prefer lean brisket. The service is pretty standard for fast casual dining. We typically get it to go but they are quick to get the food out so it doesn't eat into our lunch break. The staff are friendly and helpful. The cashier from my first visit told me about the reusable cup that gets me a dollar off each time I take it in and order. The ambiance is different but feels like a bbq place still. They are very forward about supporting military and first responders. They have many pictures on the wall that are from different branches of the military. I recommend coming here if you want quick good bbq. The entrance is off to the side as it shares a larger building with Stone's on the other side. I was looking to try a new option of catered food for superbowl 2024. I ordered bbq chicken & brisket with Cole slaw & mac n cheese. They did a great job delivering before the start of my party . It also came with a large container of corn bread (dry) and small rolls. Unfortunately , I felt the meats were very salty. The macaroni and cheese was so soupy and not cooked so I couldn't put this out till I had to bake it for almost 50 minutes while entertaining during the game! I have eaten at other Mission BBQs but this was my first visit to this location. It was noon time on a weekday and it was busy with eat-in and carryout customers. All that said, I was greeted as I enter and my order taken quickly as two cashiers were working at the same time. My order was available almost immediately. The brisket sandwich was "moist" as I had ordered and had a nice taste. But with six sauces to try, I could not resist trying a few. I asked one of the staff which one was their favorite and they recommended the one they liked the best. This staff member was pleasant and took time to answer my question which made me feel welcomed. We have been to Mission BBQ before but not this location. We remember enjoying it so we figured we would try this one out since it was near our hotel. We arrived a little after 11am on a Friday, which is the time they open. It felt pretty cool that they have parking reserved for veterans! It was not very busy, but there were a couple of tables occupied. They have both inside seating and an outside covered seating area. The way this works is that you go up to the counter, place your order, have a seat and they call your name to pick it up when it is ready. We stood at the counter and checked out the menu board. The kitchen area is exposed right behind the order counter. This is a BBQ place with all the standard BBQ foods like brisket, pulled pork, pulled chicken, mac and cheese, baked beans, green beans, etc. My wife chose the brisket with green beans and it comes with a piece of cornbread. I chose the pulled pork sandwich with fries but I also ordered a side of the mac and cheese because we wanted to try it. We then filled our drinks and had a seat at a booth inside. We noticed the six different BBQ sauces and picked out which ones we wanted to try. Their mission is to remind everyone what makes our country great - its heroes. The men and women who serve our communities and our country. Our name was called a short while later and we went to pick it up at the counter. Everything looked delicious. We had a seat and dug in. Everything tasted delicious. We especially enjoyed the mac and cheese and the green beans. The place really filled up as we sat there and the Friday lunch rush progressed. At 12 noon as they do everyday, we were fortunate enough to participate in the playing of the Star Spangled Banner as everyone faced the flag of this great nation we live. Pretty good BBQ joint all around. On this visit I had the 3 meat platter. The brisket and pulled pork hit the spot. Nice and tender and paired nicely with the variety of sauces they provide (the Tupelo Heat was my favorite). Wasn't a huge fan of the cheesy jalapeno sausage but that is really a matter of personal taste as the quality seemed pretty decent. The real draw here is the awesome sauces that really kick butt. Not only is there good variety but it really does add a lot of nice dimensions to the solid meat offerings. Even their seasonal banana pudding was quite good. All in the food was excellent. Notably the service here was also very friendly and they get the food out pretty fast. This chain also plays close homage to the military and law enforcement as seen by the decor and various police personnel that I saw grabbing food here and in other locations. Customer service is A-1.... and that in itself is deserving of 4 stars alone. I dropped in to get takeout. Even though customer service was exceptional AND they are very military friendly (I appreciated the military decor) but the food was meh.....I tried a tiny (and I mean tiny) bit of everything BUT I wanted to have a good opinion of the food. It was a bit overpriced if you ask me. I also really, really, really wish they had a baked potato option. I love grilled baked potatoes. Anywho...... Meat is not a thing for me so I tried the turkey sandwich. Portion was good to me, way more than I could eat. The fries were weird - I like fresh fries at home but something was missing (not sure what) - I tasted seasoning but something was off. Maybe its the oil used. The two sides that came with the sandwich - mac n cheese & collard greens. These sounded like a good idea - but I am not used to all that was in the greens (I am positive there were tomatoes). I am just not used to them made that way. The mac n cheese was drrrrrry. It had breadcrumbs on top and some burnt parts (yeees) but it was lacking moisture. A bit disappointed since this location was not as "great" as the Columbia location. I tried the pulled pork sandwich and of course got some collard greens (yum!). The pork was super dry, but ay least their KC bbq sauce saved the day and made it more edible. Good news I still loved their collard greens. I also splurged and got a bottled soda. A big red?! I normally just get water but it seemed like a soda day. Service was good but not as personalized as I found at the last place. Guess not every Mission BBQ is equal! Went twice over the past couple of days: the manager was there for dinner and lunch the next day. The Texas twang sauce was my favorite. Had the 3 meet combo for dinner with Cole slaw and beans. The meat was great, moist brisket was on point. Beans were good, Cole slaw was meh....next day had the moist brisket sandwich for lunch with fries and Mac and cheese. The Mac was amazing, fries were just plain fries nothing special. You can't help but think your supporting the military and first responders when your here. Fatty brisket was moist and flavorful. We also tried the smoked prime rib, which was a steal -- a big slab of perfectly medium rare meat for less than $15. Sides were great, especially the creamed corn. Food came out super quick, which was awesome given we had a toddler in tow. Plenty of seating (booths and tables). A well stocked drink and condiment station. And of course, lots of BBQ sauces that are fun to try. Best part was the service. The employees were incredibly friendly and helpful. The meat falls right off the bone, the coleslaw is tasty and the greens and cornbread are surprisingly delicious. Consistently good is my overall comment as I compare this new location with others in the chain Today hubby got a brisket sandwich which he ordered lean but there is also a moist option for those that want a bit more fat ( my preference) and because we prefer it they chopped it for us... there is also a chopped option on the menu but that is in sauce and we prefer getting it sans sauce. We also did that as a XXL combo which is two sides and a fountain drink. Our sides were coleslaw and the "kids" Mac and Cheese. The kids version is without the crumbled topping... Last weekend was our second time at this location (we've also been to the Chantilly location several times). It's my favorite local BBQ place because of their strong support for the military and law enforcement. For food, I usually get the pulled pork, but for a change from my routine, opted for the brisket during the most recent visit. My wife always gets the pulled chicken. For our sides, we always go for the coleslaw, baked beans, and mac & cheese. Our favorite sauce is the Smoky Mountain. The cornbread is the only item that sometimes it's great and other times it's just okay. Finally, kudos to the staff. Every time we come in, they've always been very friendly to us. I just hope it's not only because I'm wearing my USMC hat. Anyway, I'm already looking forward to our next visit! read more

I'm on a "mission" (pun intended lol) to try out and taste test all of the Mission BBQs in the NoVA area thanks to the all around exceptional BBQ experience I had at the Christiansburg (Blacksburg) location not long ago (see my review). Probably just about the best tasting BBQ, especially given the price, cafeteria-style ordering (so it's true you don't have to go full service (and pay the full service price!) to get delicious ribs!!), quick service from cheery, friendly counter staff in a clean, nicely laid out and spacious dining area. Thanks to my Christiansburg experience, I'd say this is the gold standard for a Mission BBQ experience I'm looking to replicate. The Herndon location comes mighty close with one thing I wish they'd do better at (read on). (Thumbs down to the Sterling location which definitely needs improvement.) Thumbs up to: * Great location - in the Clock Tower Shopping Center (where Giant (formerly Shoppers Food Warehouse), Ned Devine's, Breakers, Chuck E. Cheese is) - literally on the corner of Centreville Rd and Sunrise Valley Drive * Easy plentiful lot parking * Large inside seating as well as large covered patio seating * Very clean - this must be a corporate standard (kudos!) - tables are swooped down upon and cleaned almost immediately after a party leaves! * Super friendly staff - lots of cheerful, energetic young people who call out a greeting when you enter, are patient as you peruse the menu boards, offer their recommendations and are just as nice and friendly as can be. So refreshing these days. * Quick, fast service - order at the counter, wait for them to call your name for pick up. You can see the staff work the orders as soon as they're punched into the system. You won't be waiting long for your meal. (We came around 8PM on a weeknight - note they close earlier (that night they closed at 9PM) since the pandemic so plan accordingly. But there was no line, the place was not crowded and only a few people came in after us.) * Decent prices for what you get. Again I say, for real down home authentic smoked meats including baby back ribs, and for a non sit down full service restaurant, you can't beat the prices. * And great value for what you get for the price. And don't we all need that these days?! Generous portions (they don't skimp here). Definitely makes you want to come back for more. * Their seasonal desserts. Oh man their desserts. So, I've had their carrot cake with a healthy dollop of cream cheese frosting - a bit of spice and huge on flavor! This time around, we ordered their Peach Cobbler. Not as good as their carrot cake but still SO GOOD. Pro Tip: we knew we would be full after the meal so we order the cobblers to go and took them home to eat later - when you're ready to eat them, simply put them in a bowl and gently microwave them. Voila! They are still as delicious as the day you got 'em. The Peach Cobbler was juicy, fruity and not too sweet. The crust and crumble on top were a perfect compliment to the fruity cobbler filling. MWAH! * And last but not least, taste....with one caveat (....keep reading!). With this one exception (which is easily fixed), the taste and flavors rock. Expertly spiced and rubbed. And the 6 pack of BBQ sauces at the table kick things up a notch for sure. Goodbye Famous Dave's and Willard's! Needs Improvement: * There was only one thing I would say this location can improve on - don't serve customer's less than quality product. You would think that goes without saying and I hope this was not a "let's see if we can pull one over on this gal - she probably won't notice" (but I did). The 5 rib baby back ribs I was served were not fall-off-the-bone, tender, juicy ribs that I had expected. Some of the ribs had excess fat on them and the top layer on the ribs was over cooked. So for this serving, the value was not there. In hindsight, I should have taken them back. And in the future, I won't hesitate to do that. At the same time, I wonder if because it was an hour from closing, the pickins are slim - ? You get what you get - ? Meaning - don't order ribs close to closing time - ? * The Hawaiian Rib Eye Special was also a little too well done. I don't believe they asked my friend how he wanted it cooked so he never indicated (he would have said Medium Rare) so - is that also a "you-get-what-you-get" type menu item (steaks) - ? I will say the steak (which was more of a brisket type steak than a classic rib eye), for the price, was incredible - you can't beat it. But the icing on the cake would have been a more juicy, less well done steak. So....there you are. Yes, I would definitely come back and WILL be back. And I won't hesitate to call out less-than-quality items right there when I see them at pick up or bring them back up when I cut into them and find an over cooked item. I was pleased with some good quality barbecue. The portions were large. I was starving after playing full tournament of volleyball so I ordered a full sandwich with fries and Mac and cheese and I couldn't finish my meal. But it was good quality comfort food. They didn't skimp on the portion of pork in the sandwiches. I appreciated the variety of sauces you can try. Making sure to ask the counter for the white Alabama sauce.
