Great bbq priced well. Have stopped by the weekend stand several times now and always got great ribs. Woodsmoke is prevalent throughout the meat, and it's real honest barbecue. There's no fussing about or pretentious gussied-up-ness with this roadside stand that sits in the Shell gas station lot. Talked to the owner a little bit, and he told me about his bbq technique and how he loves to do it. This is how they do it in the South, and I'm glad it's here right around the corner. PS - I never go to Red,Hot & Blue and Famous Dave's. Having lived in South Carolina for a summer, I'd like to think I have a good handle on what real good barbecue is, and those chains aren't it. read more

It's been several months since I last had a chance to grab some food here. So I hop in my car, drove a good 20+ miles to satiate my hankering for bbq and boy have things changed. Last I was here, they had a little tent that was at the mercy wind. Now, there's a nice truck to keep them out of the weather. Also, instead of dripping sauce in my car like before, I can now eat at a couple of new high tables and seats next to the truck. Fantastic improvements from before. The best part is of course is the menu. I noticed some new items have been added to it. That menu really does change from week to week and that's keeps me coming back. I had the dry rub ribs which were phenomenal when you dip it in their sauce which was sweet and vinegary at the same time. Not dry but crisp outside and moist inside. I also tried the beef rib which was new and I really enjoyed it. They serve a single beef rib that's so big it won't even fit in the damn container. Tender, juicy, and has that fantastic wood grill smell to it. Crispy exterior but inside is very moist. Very tender and cuts easily. If you get this, don't bother getting anything else. It's a whole lotta lotta meat. Then top everything off with their delicious baked beans that comes with the order. It may seem pricey but for the quality and quantity, this is a great deal compared to other locations found within the walls of a restaurant. This is how I've imagined roadside bbq should be and I'm not disappointed. This place is just worth every mile of that 20 I travel to get here. And I'll gladly travel it any weekend just to see what DD BBQ has has up on its marker board next. read more

DD Barbeque - a food truck parked in a parking lot - Barbeque Near Me - Sterling, Virginia

DD Barbeque might be the most serious barbeque joint in the DC area. Located on Rt. 7 (west bound lane & Lakeland Dr.) in a Shell gas station parking lot DD has no indoor seating, only 2 tables, no chairs and no drinks. What do have are limited hours (weekends) friendly staffs, one seriously major kick ass BBQ pit and great BBQ. There are a number of pretty good places to get BBQ in the area; all require a little effort to seek out. DD is the best I have found yet. Take one look at his pit and you know you have a serious pit master at work, the pit it's self is a work of art. Looking at the pics in the gallery it seems the pit master has upgraded his equipment, it's not surprising. My guess is he needs more capacity. At DD you'll find pork in the form of chopped pork and ribs, beef in the form of brisket, chicken and lamb...yes lamb. I have sampled the chopped pork and ribs, both excellent with perfect smoke flavor and a nice smoke ring. The ribs which are spares not baby back are huge and meaty, they are not fall off the bone mush found in too many chain restaurants. They are very tender while still have a bit of chew. Ribs are served dry with sauce on the side. The pork comes chopped verses pulled, I prefer my pork pulled but regardless it's perfectly cooked with a delicious smoky flavor. It's impossible to go wrong with either. I can't wait to try the brisket, chicken and lamb. This is more the style of BBQ found in Texas vs. Carolina, Kansas City or Memphis. FYI - If you need a drink you'll need to get it from the gas station. Also you can call ahead for larger orders to take home. Call ahead orders: 571-926-4019 It's hard to find fault with DD's but if nitpicking they are as follows. 1. Prices - high, however given the amount of food that comes with an order it's hard to complain. $9 for chopped pork sandwich, $17 for 1/2 rack of ribs. You'll have plenty left over for midnight refrigerator raiding. 2. The sides are really nothing special, they were good, just not to the level of the meats. 3. Very limited parking. 4. Limited hours, Sat and Sun only, closing at 6:00PM or until the food runs out. For all of these I'll drop a 1/2 star, just keep in mind the BBQ rates an easy 5. For local Q' joints this place is a 5, if located in Carolina, KC or Memphis a very solid 4, so given the area 5 stars. If you love smoked meats you'll be looking a long time to find better than DD's Barbeque. Eat here get fat. read more

Don't think you are seeing things - DD Barbeque is indeed at a gas station. But doesn't that just make the experience that much more... real? DD BBQ is the bee's knees. Their pulled pork sandwiches are so delicious that it's making my mouth water now. The very nice owner has a giant smoker right there at the gas station, and all of the meat is tender and fall-off-the-bone, a style that is hard to replicate up here in VA. The prices are very fair - I ordered a pulled pork sandwich and a small beans, and it came out to under 10 dollars. Oh yes, the beans are amazing as well. They have pineapple in them! Very unique. Also, drinks can be bought inside the gas station store, as he does not stock them. This is as simple and raw as it gets. Come get your car gassed up, or come grab a quick and awesome meal. There is not a whole lot of good barbeque in the DC/VA area, and the only other place I can think of is possibly Carolina Bros. I hate to give him 2 stars, as I've really loved it the past two years, but this time, it seems like all of his meats and sides have been rubbed and drowned in super spiciness and I can't really distinguish between them anymore through the burn. I'll be the first to say that I'm a spice wimp, but my hubby isn't, and even HE said everything was too spicy, even the previously to-die-for beans, which previously had tons of flavor and only a *hint* of heat. Now they're just inedible, and all taste like the BBQ sauce that comes on the side. We managed to hit DD on his last weekend before closing for the year (our only time this year), and the ribs, pulled pork (with sauce--without the sauce, they weren't spicy, so one exception) and beans were all the same too-spicy one note. Really disappointing and we ended up having to throw most of it out because it was just too hot to eat. My poor dog was looking at me like 'what ARE you doing?' but had I given any of the meat to him, he'd have had flames coming out of his butt on our walks! DD, PLEASE go back to your old recipes! I'll try it again next summer, but if it's still too spicy, that'll be my last visit. Pains me to say. read more

This is what a BBQ pit should be. A giant smoker with a service trailer, a few pop up tables, and maybe a tent when the gas station isn't under construction. $11.95 for a brisket sandwich seems steep but it's well worth your money. Forget about the sandwich. It looks like a pound of beef with two buns added for decoration. The beef is so tender and savory that it's an insult to add sauce. But I'm from Texas and we love our sauce regardless. So if you must, add some DD BBQ sauce that's perfectly balanced between smokey, tangy, and sweet. And let's not forget the wonderfully smokey smell that perfumes from the meat. The half slab of ribs are just as good but I digress. BBQ Beans with ground meat and chunks of pineapple? Pass me a pale because I could eat this all day! This is perhaps the most ingenious concept for BBQ that I've ever experienced. Bottom line - 5 star worthy but I'll save that for a follow-up visit. read more

When I think about this place, my mind is flooded with the tasted of their wood smoked spare ribs. The smoky flavor will literally embed itself into the back of your flavor memory banks permanantly, only to immediately rush back through to your consciousness whenever you hear the word barbeque. This place sells the sort of tastes that create nostalgia when it comes to comfort food; you can't put a price on that. The food here is pricey though. Love it! It was my first time to try it. I've seen there sign every Sunday after leaving church so finally decided to try it out. Tried the Ribs and the Sandwich and both were very good. Being from Memphis, some would argue the BBQ Capital, I'm very picky about my BBQ needless to say. I really liked their beans and the BBQ Sauce. Only open Saturday and Sunday. No place to park, so expect to eat in your car or try to make a picnic at the shopping mall across the street. Keep in mind that I'm not complaining that this is in a gas station. The best ribs I ever had were at a Kansas City gas station. The food here was good, but it's not something I'd rave about. I'm giving this four stars on a DC-area curve: worth a try if you live here and have a craving and can't do better. If you're visiting from KC or Texas, it's not worth the trip or the premium prices. In fact, if you're in DC and live near a Rocklands, you're probably better off there than schlepping here. And it's better than the even more expensive place in Crystal City. I travel enough that I get my BBQ fix out of town, and haven't been back here since the summer of 2012. read more

We were driving and saw this place on the side of the road. In line, I asked the owner about the wood he was using to smoke and on the day that I was there, it was a blend of pecan, oak and hickory woods. He seemed to be pretty passionate about doing BBQ right. I had the brisket sandwich and the ribs. The brisket was pretty good and certainly filling. The ribs however were amazing. They were really thick, cooked well throughout and had excellent smoky flavour throughout. The outside of the ribs were strongest in flavour and really blew me away. $12.50 for a half rack of ribs is comparable in price to a chain restaurant (Tuesday's, Friday's, Applebee's, etc) but the chains can't hold a candle to these bad boys. The beans were good but they didn't stand out like the ribs did. There is no where to sit to eat the food so you'll have to take it in your car somewhere else. We picked up our food and headed down the road to 7-11 for a slurpee to go with it. read more

We went in early January after reading the great reviews on here. Got ribs and a pork sandwich. The ribs were a little tough to get off the bone, but the meet was delicious. Well, popularity has changed things at DDQ a bit--the $12 brisket sandwich is now $16, so I guess what they taught me in college about supply and demand was true after all. But I digress. Having been scared off by the $16 brisket sandwich, I opted for the more reasonably priced pulled pork option instead. This was a huge sandwich and the pork was fantastic--best gas station 'Q ever, and perhaps better than most you would find here in the Commonwealth. With some slaw (excellent, seemed to be mustard-based) and cornbread (very good as well), I had one of the best $10 meals in recent memory. Worth a return trip, several in fact. As others have pointed out this place is in a gas station parking lot. i got the meat sampler which came with chopped beef, pulled pork and two ribs. The pork and beef were both smoky and moist. But why do they only give you one bun when you have both chopped beef and pulled pork? BBQ sauce was sweet, smoky and spicy. Loved it. Ribs were not meaty and didn't have much spice on them. Having passed by this place for months, I finally decided to take the plunge. I really wanted to like it. Nice guy, good rig. The sauces are wonderful. That said, it ended there. The prices were extremely high: for a half rack $17.50 or so. The rub on them was grainy and the ribs had a so so smoke to them. The hot box must not have been working--they were luke warm when served. The sausage: $6:00 and it tasted like a 7-11 dog with zero flavor. Clearly this was not home made nor ground by the owner (hint, hint--either find a blended sausage or do it yourself. It is easy). The saving grace, IMHO was the beans. Damn.....onions, pieces of sausage. Just the bomb. I will go back and give it another try but was really bummed about this. The ribs should be in the $12 range. The dog, $3 tops. First timer this past weekend. Had the pork sandwich and will say I will most definately return. High quality in that the meat was not comprised of chuncks of fat. Also enough meat for two sandwiches... wish he would provide a second bun. My 11 year old had the same and loved it. My only suggestion for improvement would be using buns that are a little more "artisan". read more

Great place you would hardly notice if you weren't looking for it. Food was delicious. We got the pork sandwiches and were pleasantly surprised by the quality & quantity of the meal. Husband is from the South and said it was the best BBQ he's had since living up here. Price was a little expensive, but the portion size was big enough to get two sandwiches out of it ... and everything is more expensive in Northern Virginia. The coleslaw was great also, had a kick to it that I enjoyed. We are looking forward to trying the ribs next. Too bad they are only open on Saturday & Sunday! On the recommendations of my fellow Yelpers, I went and tried out the Q at DD's BBQ. And yeah, it's really good. I've since tried the babyback ribs, the pork, and the brisket. I like the brisket the most of the 3. All three have a lot of smoke throughout, and it's delish! It's in the parking lot of a gasoline station (Shell, I think?), lol, so be careful you don't get run over by the folks trying to get gas. read more

After reading the reviews last week, I decided to give DD BBQ a try. Arrived at the gas station yesterday (8/12) to find absolutely nothing other than the gas station. Tried asking the gas station clerk what was going on, but, he didn't speak English. Then, jumped back in the car and drove further West up Rt. 7 to no avail, could not locate the portable trailer. Went to another gas station just East of the supposed location, they said they hadn't seen the grill trailer in weeks. This place is the real deal. Wood smoked BBQ that'll keep you coming back for more. Plus their coleslaw and baked beans are really good too! We've only been there once but we tried both types of ribs, the brisket, the slaw, beans and corn bread. I wanted the tips but they were sold out and they recommended either coming in early or calling ahead so they could some aside. They were very polite and helpful and I actually met the Chef the night before for a very quick chat. The brisket was hands down the family favorite with the ribs tying for second. I'm a fan of St. Louis style ribs so I was excited to try them, but I felt the flavor was a little lacking that day. I can't put my finger on it but they didn't knock my socks off like the brisket. The slaw was really good with a nice 'mustardy' base. The beans were fantastic with pineapple and meat, and not overly sweet like some other places. And their BBQ sauce? Wowzers pretty dang good. Not super thick, not super sweet, just the right amount of zing, bite and heat. The only negative experience was that it took a while to get the complete order, and I think it had more to with the number of people floating at the order/pickup window. Once I had a chance to explain, they apologized and gave us an extra order of slaw and beans. To be candid, I was taken aback by the fact that this was at a gas station. But after seeing them there for a few months, I decided to give it a shot and it was worth the visit. So there are some menu changes to report after reading the reviews. The biggest comment was that the brisket sandwich was just to priceu. as a result, they no longer have it. In its place they have the chopped beef sandwich it features big chunks of beer which seem like brisket or roast, not sure. Either way, it's very good! I ordered that and the rib tips. I liked the sandwich, wish I would have ordered some saw and beans with it instead of the tips. The ribs were okay, nothing spectaular. Real light rub and decent smoke flavor. The bbq sauce fell short for me though. Really strong acid or vinegar taste which I just want a fan of. Not like Carolina style vinegar, seemed to have a decent tomato base. If you like that style you'll love thisnthough. Definitely worth checking out! I'll probably go back to try the pork sandwich, slaw, and beans. They do sell brisket by the pound, so you could theoretically make your own. read more

I would love to try and eat here, but they always seem to be closed. We tried a couple of years ago to no avail and decided to try again recently. We went last Saturday at 5:30, but they were closed. We went again Sunday and they were out of most everything, because of the football game. So, my husband was able to try the brisket (which he liked) and a few of the sides (which were good). The woman there suggested calling in the morning to place an order to ensure we'd have what we wanted. So, I called this morning (Sunday, mind you, they're only open Saturday and Sunday) and the guy said that they're not open today. Even though their hours said they are. I give up.
