    h. chem chap hap - steam mussels in lemongrass and basil broth. (12) 10.95

Family-owned restaurant, very kind and welcoming. I had the chem chep hap as an appetizer, which is basically mussels in a lemongrass and basil broth. Loved it. Would pair it with rice. Great starter on a chilly day. For an entree, I had the tom muc xao lan, consisting of squid, vermicelli noodles, mushrooms, onions, and coconut milk. The ingredients paired well together, however, I wish there were fewer onions and more squid. Unique rice dish that I'd recommend, not too spicy either. I also tried the pho, which was okay. Nothing to brag about. I think it would be better to try more traditional Vietnamese dishes here. Lastly, service is slower because it is essentially a two-person team, however, it's worth a try if you want authentic Viet food.

I moved to RI about two years ago and has been on the hunt for a good Vietnamese restaurant. I miss my mom's cooking dearly, but I'm so glad Minh Hai exists here. Bonus: it's BYOB! First of all, I love that it's such a humble place because it reminds me so much of home (both MN and Vietnam). The couple is adorable and reminded me of my parents lol. If you're here expecting fine dining services, then it's not the place for you. It did take some time for us to get the menus and to put in our orders, but understandable because the lady had to tend to 8 tables at a time. If you go during non-rush hours though, it's not too long of a wait. Anyways, I love the pho here. The broth is aromatic and flavorful. Most restaurants will serve you broth that are multipurpose for multiple noodles dishes, but the pho broth here is definitely not. I also love the crispy egg rolls as appetizer and their fresh squeeze lemonade. "Home" is the word I would describe the vibe and food this place gives off. Highly recommend!

I'm rather disappointed I never gave Minh Hai a chance in the past. Before moving to Providence I even lived in Cranston, but I would rather go to Hon's. Now don't get my wrong and I mean it when I say Hon's is a great place, but Minh Hai will give it a run for it's money. The broth in the pho was absolutely wonderful and worth waiting for! Very rich in flavor and seasons perfectly and very fresh. They do have a larger menu with other offerings that I will certainly be exploring as we go. My girlfriend had the Pad Thai which she loved, and as an appetizer we ordered some of the Vietnamese egg rolls which came out hot, delicious and fresh. I am not sure if he's the owner but a fantastic gentleman came out and greeted us as we were eating and spoke with us which gave a nice personal touch to it. We never felt rushed or forgotten while we ate. Prices were exceptional and well within anyone's budget. We will certainly be coming back as we've been missing out for so long, and the menu has a lot to explore.

Absolutely delicious and authentic Vietnamese food! We had the goi cuon (both the shrimp and the tofu), pho tai and bun cha gio with pork. They were all excellent. The husband and wife who run the restaurant are lovely and we will definitely be back soon!

I've been craving pho because of the cold weather so I decided to give this place a chance. I read tons of reviews about how it takes awhile to get your food because the only employees are the owner and his wife. This is still true! It took 45 minutes to get our food in a Saturday night even though there were only 3 tables that were full when we got there. However, after we got our food, people who arrived 30 minutes after us got their food shortly. So it seems like it depends on what you order! The broth was delicious and very flavorful. I also loved their mango and peach bubble tea. Definitely would come back again but next time, I will pick up the order instead of eating there. It seems like the pick up orders get there food faster as well.

We've been here many times and it was good, but were pleasantly surprised to find out that it is better!! In my experience, restaurants are generally broken down into 3 categories as time passes: maintain quality, lower quality and improve their quality. Most are in the maintain quality camp, but I will give them a round of applause for getting better. The food: the Bahn Mi bread had a crispy exterior while having a soft center. The veggies were super fresh and flavorful. Everything came together perfectly! The Vietnamese Iced Coffee was bold, sweet and very craveworthy. The staff were very nice and theres definitely room to eat inside, but I wanted to take these back home so I can make an absolute beautiful mess of the crispy, flakey Bahn Mi Bread. Come on ... how much does it cost you to actually throw in a tiny cup of hot mustard? I mean, who doesn't eat hot mustard with Chinese food? It used to be that Chinese food was a fast and cheap dinner ... a combo meal here is $18, after substitution. I want to know ... who the fuck has ever actually eaten a shitty chicken wing from a Chinese restaurant without substituting it out? Probably nobody. You eat fresh BBQ chicken wings at a tailgate, not from a dirty restaurant the size of a college dorm room. Of course they know any sane person with working taste buds will substitute nasty skimpy wings for something else ... so they include them in every combo meal knowing people will pony up the extra $1.50 - $2.50. A combo with 3 crab rangoon, 3 chicken fingers (substituted for wings) and an egg roll now costs almost $20. The quality here is on par with a mall food court ... which is to say, not great. Dry AF fried rice with fatty cubes of pork which have the consistency and taste of a pencil eraser. The rice was almost chewy it was so dry amd barely tasted like pencil shavings it was so bland. The crab rangoon was decent ... filled with fake cream cheese and almost no crab. If you are drunk, it's fine and filling. Nothing you couldn't throw in an air fryer from a frozen box. The chicken fingers were okay. Likeky frozen a year ago and thrown into a deep fat frier hours before you ordered and kept under a heat lamp. If you are drunk or high, you'll leave a 4/5 star review. If you are unfortunately sober when you eat this, it will remind you of the dsys you'd scrape your lawn mowing money together and splurge on Chinese food from the mall food court when you were in middle school. Overall, this is buffet food served as fresh made. The fact that everything had almost zero taste ... they better start putting hot mustard and soy sauce in orders unless that want continued 2/3 stars. Bottom line ... I was hoping for good old fashioned American style strip mall Chinese food. What I got ... sucked.
