The food was excellent. Tried the bee meatball soup in a kid size for the little one. I got the ginger tilapia, which was cook so nice. The fish meat was still soft with a little crunchy exterior. I love this place so much. It is so authentic and the couple that owns it makes you feel so welcome, it's like you're sitting in their home. It is really just those 2 running the restaurant, as you see in other comments due to this, it's not super quick service but it's worth the wait, and it adds to the charm of the place. Great starter on a chilly day. For an entree, I had the tom muc xao lan, consisting of squid, vermicelli noodles, mushrooms, onions, and coconut milk. The ingredients paired well together, however, I wish there were fewer onions and more squid. Unique rice dish that I'd recommend, not too spicy either. I also tried the pho, which was okay. Nothing to brag about. I think it would be better to try more traditional Vietnamese dishes here. I moved to RI about two years ago and has been on the hunt for a good Vietnamese restaurant. I miss my mom's cooking dearly, but I'm so glad Minh Hai exists here. Bonus: it's BYOB! First of all, I love that it's such a humble place because it reminds me so much of home (both MN and Vietnam). The couple is adorable and reminded me of my parents lol. If you're here expecting fine dining services, then it's not the place for you. It did take some time for us to get the menus and to put in our orders, but understandable because the lady had to tend to 8 tables at a time. If you go during non-rush hours though, it's not too long of a wait. Anyways, I love the pho here. The broth is aromatic and flavorful. Most restaurants will serve you broth that are multipurpose for multiple noodles dishes, but the pho broth here is definitely not. I also love the crispy egg rolls as appetizer and their fresh squeeze lemonade. "Home" is the word I would describe the vibe and food this place gives off. Highly recommend! read more

I'm rather disappointed I never gave Minh Hai a chance in the past. Before moving to Providence I even lived in Cranston, but I would rather go to Hon's. Now don't get my wrong and I mean it when I say Hon's is a great place, but Minh Hai will give it a run for it's money. The broth in the pho was absolutely wonderful and worth waiting for! Very rich in flavor and seasons perfectly and very fresh. They do have a larger menu with other offerings that I will certainly be exploring as we go. My girlfriend had the Pad Thai which she loved, and as an appetizer we ordered some of the Vietnamese egg rolls which came out hot, delicious and fresh. I am not sure if he's the owner but a fantastic gentleman came out and greeted us as we were eating and spoke with us which gave a nice personal touch to it. We never felt rushed or forgotten while we ate. Prices were exceptional and well within anyone's budget. While it was full of veggie goodness it was not spicy at all. The server, one of the owners?, forgot to pack a noodle. With that in mind, expect that service can be slower than the other pho restaurants in the greater Providence area. Even with the wait, I am all the more willing to wait for it! With most Vietnamese restaurants, the pho stands as the star of the show. With Minh Hai, this is with no exception and the pure clean flavor of the broth stands at the top amongst the competitors. I wouldn't say this place over or undercuts on portion size. I've been craving pho because of the cold weather so I decided to give this place a chance. I read tons of reviews about how it takes awhile to get your food because the only employees are the owner and his wife. This is still true! It took 45 minutes to get our food in a Saturday night even though there were only 3 tables that were full when we got there. However, after we got our food, people who arrived 30 minutes after us got their food shortly. So it seems like it depends on what you order! The broth was delicious and very flavorful. I also loved their mango and peach bubble tea. Definitely would come back again but next time, I will pick up the order instead of eating there. They have the best Vietnamese food around and one of the best pho noodles in RI. This place is not your average place at all . It definitely is a hidden gem a hole in the wall in other words. The aroma of fresh pho broth smacks you right away upon entering. You will see Minhs wife running around serving tables as her husband is cooking fresh ingredients in the back. They are always always consistent with their dishes and I have never ever had a bad dish and I've been coming here since they opened! This is hands down our favorite pho place in Rhode Island. The pho broth is so fragrant and umami, and pretty much the best thing ever on a rainy or cold day. They're also BYOB, which is nice. TBH, I have driven by this restaurant on and off for about 6 years and have mostly assumed that it is closed for business permanently. Imagine my surprise when one evening, I drove by and saw lights on and a few cars on the parking lot. That was my cue to go in. The couple who own and run this joint, multi-tasking as servers and cooks, are sweet until they get overwhelmed and then they start making mistakes. It almost seems like they assume they will never be too busy. Well, I've dined here 3x and I have seen the occupancy go up to about 4 tables in the early evening, and things start to go awry. Just saying...we waited for a long time for an Iced tea with condensed milk that never came, and then were served Vietnamese cold, not hot as asked for, coffee. Sadly, the owner was nowhere near apologetic even though it was her hubby who committed the faux pas. Anyhoo, let's talk about the food because that is where it's at. The food is really delicious that it is easy for me to ignore the little service slips. I especially like that they have fish on the menu-- 3 kinds to choose from: the humble tilapia, the staple salmon, and then there's catfish fillet-- and squid. File under "more-than-just-shrimp" for seafood. I do not like how a catfish looks but I do like its delicately sweet flesh. Especially in this dish called "Ca Chien Mam Me" which is pan fried fillet with tamarind fish sauce. Very authentic. You can't go wrong with the Seafood Noodle Soup. I highly recommend the Special Rice, cooked in lightly flavored chicken broth with onions and garlic. The Pho Tai Nam-- beef noodle soup with eye round steak and well-done flank is satisfying. A must to try is the Clay Pot cooked rice with shrimp, chicken, broccoli, among others. There are also vegetarian dishes for non-meat eaters (not vegan). We will be returning to Mihh Hai as soon as possible. This long term staple of vietnamese dining in Cranston was such a pleasant experience. Inside and out, this establishment is nothing to look at. But the formica tables and utilitarian stainless ware set the agenda for what is valued at Minh Hai - the food! Delicious in every way. Our group had a fresh vegetable and chicken salad and fresh rolls (nime chow) for starters. Both were so fresh and tasty. Then we each ordered individual dishes - a pho, two clay pots, a prawn and pork over rice with fresh vegetables, and an eggplant and prawn dish. We all dug in with great gusto and just couldn't stop! Each and every dish was outstanding in its own way. As other reviewers have noted, the pho was outstanding - perhaps the best in Rhode Island. We also experimented with the various homemade chili condements - with warnings from the owner/server/husband! We also had a discussion with the chef/owner/wife on how to make our own versions at home. The total bill for 5 was under $75 for the entire meal. In this day and age, that's an incredible value. I must take a moment to acknowledge the extremely welcoming husband and wife owners; they were so kind, informative, and showed us a great senses of humor. Granted, part of our group had been visiting Minh Hai for many years and knew the owners well, but I quickly felt at home in the establishment. We hope to return very soon to explore more of their traditional Vietmanese dishes. One final note, Minh Hai is BYOB. read more

So I'd order the large and save the extra 49¢. We also got the grilled pork chops and that was delicious too. But they said they give 2 pork chops but we only got one and a tiny second piece. After my last two visits, I have to reduce my rating from 4-stars to 3-stars (possibly 2). It took 15 mins after ordering to tell us that they were out of rice and it would take 10-15 mins for rice to be done cooking. The food is still good but the service is too slow to recommend. So, if you have at least an hour, Minh Hai would be good (though we were there 1.5 hours a couple of months ago; we're fast eaters as well). Don't get me wrong, the food is very good (though some items are unavailable at times). I prefer Hon's over Minh Hai for pho but the rices dishes are amazing here. read more
