Once we entered the restaurant, a friendly waiter greeted us right away. They have an extensive menu. We ordered two lunch specials, which came with rice and jasmine iced tea. We had the Melaka seafood and green curry chicken. The sauce for the Melaka seafood was more like a sweet and sour sauce, which was ok. It also came with some sad looking broccoli and carrots, which we didn't eat. The green curry chicken was definitely the highlight of our meal. They gave us a generous portion of chicken and veggies. It was also very flavorful. The jasmine iced teas were refreshing. There were many entrees and appetizers on the menu that we wanted to try. If someone invites you out to Mingala, don't ask any questions and just say "Yes!". My friends took me here for the first time, they mentioned this is another location, they have had the Burmese/Malaysian restaurant before and really enjoyed it. Where I live an option like this is very rare so I was pretty excited to try a new experience. We decided to share a few items together, family style, which based on the configuration of tables and booths this is best experienced by bringing a group of folks and splitting all the wonderful dishes. We ordered the following items Burmese Tea Leaf Salad (Fermented Tea Leaf, Fried Lentils, Peanuts, Chili, Tomatoes, Cabbage, Sesame Seeds) So refreshing and had a perfect texture and flavor combination. This would be perfect on a warm day to beat the heat and bring some freshness to your day and pallette. The mix of flavors made me wanting to keep digging in for more. Be wary as there are chilis which can have a bite as my friend found out the hard way. Otherwise it's a tame salad that is a mouth pleasing experience. Tofu Rendang (Tofu, Mixed Curry Spices, Onion, Galangal, Turmeric, Cucumbers, Cilantro) Perfectly fried tofu tossed in a curry sauce and served with refreshing cucumbers. This with some rice could be a perfect bite on its own. The curry was so good and mellow, despite it not listing it coconut it definitely had a consistency of a coconut based curry. I think this was our favorite overall from the three dishes and is perfect for sharing. Tom Yum Bee Hoon (Hot & Sour Soup, Vermicelli, Tomatoes, Carrots,String Beans, Baby Corn, Broccoli, Cabbage) And another great dish. I commented how interesting that this hot and sour soup is so prevalent in different Asian countries , for any Vietnamese food lovers this was very similar to canh chua (sour soup). The vermicelli noodles and vegetables were food for the soul and I really enjoyed the broth. Not overly sour or greasy, the soup base was quite pleasant and this was definitely something I would order again. The steamed broccoli- nice and crunchy but full of flavor The black pepper tofu- the tofu absorbed the flavor beautifully and the veggies were nice and crunchy The Burmese tea leaf salad- an ABSOLUTE must if you come here!! Service was quick and simple, and the staff smiled frequently while being very polite. Inside, there is a good amount of seating, and the decor is simple yet colorful. Malaysian food always hits hard with its depth of flavors, but I think the Hokkien Mee while flavorful and abundant in portion was just good, but not insanely good. Fremont/Newark residency are a bit spoil by all the great burmese options around! Mingala seem to be a combination of thai/burmese/malay restaurant. This is my first time here since they moved from warmspring to newark. I tried their burmese style coconut chicken noodle this time, the taste is good, is much less spicy or strong compare to the thai style curry laksa, so is a good option if you want a lighter taste option. The service is great, very friendly and attentive, and the ambiance is also cozy, so we tend to dine in over take out. My favorite dishes are the Curry Laksa Mee and the Singapore Bee Hoon. I am a big noodles girl and I love the combinations of veggies they add to their dishes. We've also had their red curry with rice and pad Thai. Overall, everything we have had here has been a hit. A bit of contemplation whether to give this place four or five stars, but considering that the food was good for the most part, and that the service was great, i'll settle for five. we ordered: 1. Hainam chicken rice set- delicious!! really tender and fragrant chicken that pairs extremely well with both the soy sauce and the chili sauce they give. For Malaysian food standard and flavor, it was a let down. I have high expectations when it comes south East Asian food flavor. Mingala missed in every of that aspects. There's ample seating and service was good. Staffs are friendly and attentive. The sambal belacan fried rice was ok but the belacan is not a good grade Malaysian belacan. There's also turmeric added to the fried rice. Huat Dan Ho (egg chow fun) is probably the better ones and the pickled jalapeños goes well with it. The kaosoi was the least favorite. Too creamy and the coconut milk used has a strong added flavoring. The broth has no other flavors and the dish tasted too sweet. Hokkien Mee was an absolute miss. There's no charred flavor and no pork lard used. Noodles were too el dente and did not have any cabbage which is a typical addition. Sambal condiment was watery and did not have enough belacan flavor (considering the quality of belacan used is not good, I'm not surprised) Pretty disappointed :( read more

Trying to relive my trip to Singapore two years ago, I had to try this place! First off, the curry laksa me brought me right back. Good chew on the noodles, and the toppings were plentiful! The chicken satay was seasoned well and the peanut sauce was delicious, though I thought it was priced a little high for an appetizer. And interestingly enough it was not skewered, and considered a cutlet with crisp but not dry pieces of chicken. The roti paratha with curry sauce was good. Good enough that my mom bought one to go! The roti was hot, flaky and crispy, with a thin curry sauce that compliments it well. My mom ordered the pineapple fried rice, I can't say it was a winner, but it was decent. Overall a nice reminder that I need to get back to Singapore! But more so, it's nice to have a little bit of Singapore close to home in Newark with good food and great service! read more

It was pretty busy when we came, but service was still very attentive and nice. -curry fish head claypot: this is a must order! Although I wish there were more pieces of fish in it, the claypot itself was massive. It had all my favorite stuff: tofu, okra, fried green beans, eggplant, and fish head. All the ingredients soaked up the flavor of the curry so well to make up a hot, hearty dish. -roti pratha: my favorite type of roti! so buttery and came piping hot -- pairs so nicely with the curry dipping sauce -cafe baby short rib: sweet short ribs with a coffee flavor. Almost all of the same great menu items, plus some new updates. Mingala Restaurant takes over the old Happy Kitchen space in the Lion Food Center in Newark. Upon returning from San Diego, I went to Lion Food Center. I was surprised to learn Happy Kitchen had closed. I was also surprised that Mingala was renovating the space, moving from the Fremont Warm Springs area. A couple weeks later I learned that they had opened their doors. I decided to try it out. I had not been inside since the pandemic hit. There was a fresh coat of paint and new seating arrangements. The staff were friendly and accommodating (and the same from their previous location). I placed my order, and I took in the decor while waiting. Soon I got my drink, followed closely by my food. Nine of us went here for lunch on a Saturday for a birthday meal. I am typically pretty excited for Malaysian food but I gotta say, this was a bit of a let down. Not bad per se, but not particularly impressive. The Chow Kuey Teow and the Green Curry were quite good. The latter is a bit spicy but in a good way. The Cafe Ribs were kind of odd. Pretty much everyone at the table didn't like it, so I ended up eating most of it. The coffee was too bitter and it seemed like they tried to mask it / counter-balance it with sweetness. But it just ended up being really really sweet and then a not particularly pleasant bitterness. The Hainan Chicken was also a bit of a let-down. The chicken was extremely boney. The typical ginger oil sauce looked kind of off and came in a to-go plastic container. The chicken wings were cooked ok, but lacked any flavor outside of the sauce it came with. The Green Curry + their steamed rice was good though. I suppose if I came with a small group and perhaps just got their lunch special or something it would've been a better experience.
