Milton's is always a good choice and the service is always great, super friendly too! We ordered the Pastrami Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich - I would 100% recommend! So much flavor and it comes with a ton of food, side of fires and potato salad. read more

A dismal, bland meal was rescued by excellent service from our lady server last week. I've had better hot turkey, stuffing, and gravy from an olive drab colored can out of a box marked Meal, Combat, Individual. The onion rings tasted funky, as in funky from the ass region. For me, the best part of the meal was the giant black and white cookie. read more

I am a very big fan of this restaurant. It's a little pricey, but the food is consistently good. I tried the Italian Beef sandwich and the Philly Cheese Steak, both were on point. Their French fries could be better, but they are passable. The desserts are the real treat. Try the Carrot Cake. It's tied for one of the best I have ever had. Would prefer not having Cole slaw given with the sandwiches because it gets thrown away. read more

Second time here, the food and ambiance is good. The food selection is excellent. But today I was a bit taken aback. Mom and I went to the bakery area. My mom picked up a jar of peaches! I got a variety of cookies about a dozen. Mom goes to pay for her peaches, 17.95 plus tax. I pay for the cookies and another bag of Milton's crackers after that. The lady charges me, I pay with a card. When we get back to the car my hubby asks what I bought and when I tell him $36 dollars he exclaims wow! That's a bit pricey! He looks at the receipt and notices that I was charged a jar of peaches. Immediately I return to get my account credited but that won't show up in my account for at least three days. Why the younger girl charged me for something I never placed in the counter. I cannot seem to understand since I told her to charge me for cookies and bag of crackers. My mom and her peaches were long gone, paid for, and bagged. I'm not sure if that was just a simple mistake...or is something else going on here???? read more

Solid corned beef and pastrami sandwiches!! I've been looking for a good deli for quite some time, will definitely be coming back.

Order to pick up. This is so good. I ordered the knackwurst and they have their to go game down. A little everything extra packed up for me. The knackwurst is grilled on a bun with relish and kraut. Fries still crisp and hot even after transport home. Thanks Milton's! read more

Milton's is back open for dine in service. Stopped in on Memorial Weekend Sunday for lunch. Well worth it. The staff did a great job following all their new protocols and did it with a great attitude. The lean corned beef stacked high on Jewish rye topped with coleslaw and gently melted Swiss cheese was GREAT! My absolute favorite. Sharing, not gonna happen. The wife enjoyed a piping hot bowl of Matzah ball soup loaded with carrots, noodles and chicken. After 2 months of lock down this was a real treat. read more

I really wanted this review to be a good one, because my family has been coming to Milton's off and on for years. Through we hadn't been to the deli in over a year, we decided to visit again on a Thursday after July 4th. Unfortunately, it wasn't Milton's finest hour. Something new that caught me off guard since my last visit was the pictures of the food on the walls. They felt oddly placed and gave me the feeling of a more low-budget diner appearance, something you might see at Denny's or Norm's. That was one red flag. Also, we were almost aloofly asked to seat ourselves by the person behind the deli counter. That was the 2nd red flag. The third was the overwhelmingly chaotic menu filled with near-endless choices. Any time I've seen a restaurant switch to a fuller, more busy menu, it almost always shows as a warning sign for problems. Big menus mean the cooks have a tremendous burden of preparing dozens and dozens of different meals adequately, instead of specializing in a handful of really great options. I hoped it wasn't the case here, but I was fearful. I love chicken and waffles. If a restaurant has it on the menu, I'm likely to try it. I don't recall Milton's offering it before, but it's there now, so I ordered it. My wife had a two egg breakfast, my father-in-law had a waffle combo, and my son ordered silver-dollar pancakes off the kid's menu. When the server asked my son how he wanted his egg, I looked sideways for a minute, because I didn't see eggs as an option for the silver dollars, but maybe it was off the menu. I told the server, "scrambled." Because I knew I would be the one eating it. The food arrives, and everything looks great, but my son's meal looks off. It has eggs, bacon, and two regular pancakes. Apparently, the server thought my son had ordered the regular pancake breakfast instead of the silver dollars. No real harm was done, because he didn't mind, and the meals cost the same. I took my son's eggs and turned them over on my plate, showing they were heavily browned and overcooked. I tasted them regardless, but they were bad. No worries because I had beautiful chicken and waffles in front of me. The Belgian waffle was good, soft yet crispy on the outside, with a wonderful taste. The chicken though was not so great. The outside was golden and crispy, but the meat inside was dry and overcooked. It seems to me that the kitchen let these pieces sit in the warmer way too long, which was strange because it was only just past 10 am. I immediately thought that the chicken must have been from the previous day, and the thought turned my stomach so much, I stopped eating. Overall, between the four of us, not a 100% bad meal, but not nearly as good as we have had in the past from Milton's. The server was accommodating and removed my meal from the order (we made sure to tip accordingly). Thank goodness for his attentive service, because this could have been a much different review. I'm not sure when or if we will visit again, but I have high hopes for the place because they've been so good in the past. Also, I know the owner reads these notes, so I am encouraged that he'll take some of this to heart. read more

Service was excellent and food was delicious!! Was a bit pricy but it was worth it. I got the smoked turkey sandwich with potato salad and it was tasty on a gluten free bread. I would go back again for sure! And the snickerdoodle cookie was amazing! read more

Milton's - Delis Near Me - Del Mar, California

We were looking forward to trying Milton's Deli on our way back down to San Diego from Escondido; the county has a dearth of real Jewish delis with quality food, great service, and a fun busy atmosphere. This wasn't it. The experience was mediocre at best. We ordered the combo smoked fish platter and chicken wrap. The portions were on the small side, curious because we did see some large sandwiches go by. The service was middling, the manager (in the role of maitre'd) was welcoming when we arrived and didn't tardy in finding us a table. Our waiter was affable but not outstanding. The restaurant was also freezing, with many keeping on their coats. I told a server/busboy about it, and he snapped at me to tell the manager, pointing at him. The ambiance is a far cry from an authentic deli, more like a pretentious pizza parlor--none of the murals, comfortable big booths, or photos of local celebrities old-school delis like DZ Akins provides. The menu is a far cry from the multi-page laundry list I expect of a deli. Definitely not kosher--they serve meat with cheese and pork products (I'll give DZ Akins and the once-decent Samson's a pass on this, but seriously--you need to be a master at keeping a straight face to put ham and cheese sandwiches on the same menu as potato knishes and blintzes. Not cool, dude). The baker/deli section was small and rather sad, with very basic and overpriced offerings. Management skimped on the bathrooms: dark, dingy, not restocked (only one soap dispenser was filled), and could have been straight from a middle school. Anyone who's ever visited Junior's in NYC will weep. read more

A friend and I stopped in here for a late lunch after going to a craft fair at the Fairgrounds. Parking was busy, but possible. You're welcomed by the deli and it's seat yourself dining in. We shared a bowl of matzo ball soup and the triple decker corned beef, pastrami and Swiss sandwich. Everything was delicious, and we walked out with full bellies without breaking the bank. read more

While I love this place - its clear the restaurant has been on "auto-pilot" for some time now, and this means before COVID. First if you charge premium prices which they do, one is going to get high quality reasonable portions or average/mediocre quality monster portions. This restaurant focuses on the latter. I ordered a lox bagel sandwich on an everything bagel, the bagel was not toasted and doughy but the rest was fine. The latkes were ok but seemed like they were cooked prior and reheated. The restroom, except the lavatory, looks straight out of 1970 and last cleaned in 1980. This should be a 4 star place if they could just clean it up and focus a bit more on quality. read more

First visit to Milton's after driving by many times. It's a bit of an unusual entry as the restaurant is located below ground level and one must descend a staircase to reach the front door. Upon entering, there is a small deli counter and grocery section directly in front with the actual restaurant positioned to the side. I was immediately greeted and shown to a table in the attractive, high-ceilinged dining area. The walls were adorned with photographs of vintage San Diego scenes and personalities and a high mounted TV was tuned to sports programming, but at a respectably low volume, thank you. My waiter arrived at the table immediately to drop off the menu and take my beverage order. When visiting a deli-style restaurant or sandwich shop for the first time, I typically order a classic cold roast beef sandwich, as I find this item to be a fairly accurate indicator of how they stack up to other similar places I have visited. My beverage was quickly delivered and my sandwich order taken. After about five minutes my plate arrived and looked very appealing upon first glance. In addition to the sandwich, my plate came with the freshly-made house coleslaw and a couple of dill pickle spears. The first bite of the sandwich was fantastic! Certainly one of the best cold roast beef sandwiches I have had. I lifted the top slice of the fresh rye bread to examine the contents within. The thinly-sliced rare roast beef was an attractive bright pink color as one would hope for, however it was rolled into a ball-shape that only covered about half of the bread leaving the end-points without any meat. It seemed the chef was trying to give the impression of having a generous amount of roast beef which, was the appearance at the middle where it was sliced. The accompanying lettuce and sliced tomato were crisp and very fresh, and the right amount of house mayo complimented the rest. After working on the very tasty sandwich, I sampled the house-made coleslaw, and sampled, and sampled. Milton's has one of the best versions of classic coleslaw I have ever tasted. Wonderfully fresh and crisp, with a delightful, creamy dressing. I enjoyed it so much, I forgot about the other half of my sandwich. The friendly waiter came by a couple of times to check on things, and keep my beverage topped off. Overall, a very enjoyable first visit to Milton's that will certainly see me back again before long. Four solid stars for a great meal and good service. For the $25 charge, Milton's needs to up the roast beef quantity to cover the entire sandwich, and it easily goes to five stars. read more

I really want to give this place 5 stars and I can't understand how a restaurant that's been around so long and is loved by so many, cannot get this whole - running a restaurant thing right. Tuesday night was my first dine-in experience at Milton's. The only other time I went I ordered online, went to pickup and still had to wait about 45 minutes for my take out order. Although, I was picking up food on a Saturday afternoon and the place was packed. But still...over an hour for take out!?! And they got the order wrong. Came here on Tuesday at 7:30 pm and was so happy to see the place was dead - with literally the ability to choose whatever table was there. The hostess was very nice but we ended up having to call her over to get the waitress to come out. It's like - what are you doing back there that you can't come and take our order? Order was wrong - meal stated that it came with fries for an upgrade and I specifically stated - I'd like to upgrade to fries. Waitress first tried to pretend that I read the menu wrong and the monte cristo didn't come with it. Then I read the menu to her. Not sure why she had to question me on it. The food is great but service is very poor. Not sure why this can't be fixed. From the outside, it seems like an easy fix. read more

Used to be one of the best Jewish Delis in SD OMG what happened? Had to wait 30 min for a corn beef on rye to go today at 11 - wasn't totally crowded. Found 2 - 2!! toothpicks in my sandwich. And $19 on top of that. Sad and good luck. read more

Food and service always excellent! Super Reuben is a go to authentic NYC style sandwich! Delicious. Gluten free bread is a lifesaver for those with Celiac that still hope to enjoy a proper sandwich. Homemade pickles are amazing, best I've had, honestly. Homemade potato salad is awesome, as is the coleslaw (even if you don't typcially like coleslaw you may be surprised how delicious!) read more

My wife and I went in on Saturday am for breakfast. We ordered one breakfast and asked for an extra plate. We told the server we will split the meal. When order came it was split. We thought nothing of it. Once we finished and the server brought the check there was a three dollar split meal fee. We asked to please remove since we had told her we would split the meal. She stated that two people can not sit at a table and order one meal even if the other person doesn't eat. So the split fee has to be charged. We asked why she did not state that? She said very sarcastically "well it is written in the menu". Truly disappointed with Milton's. I would think they want to keep customers and not drive them away! read more

Milton's - Biggest clock ever. - Delis Near Me - Del Mar, California

Came here to pick up a whole cheese cake for my son's birthday. So decided to check it out for lunch while picking it up. First off the wait staff and hostess were fantastic and super nice. But here's the odd thing that I'm not sure how to process. I came down stairs with my dog and looked for a place to tie him up before I went in. Barely got to the bottom of the stairs when this gentleman comes bolting out the front door "excuse me can I help you!" He says. Then mansplains that I needed to come inside and check in before sitting down. Told him yes I assumed that but wanted to tie up my dog as he is probably not allowed inside the restaurant.. Anyhow, after a fantastic sandwich, and being told that they will have the cheese cake waiting when I was done with my meal. the waitress says "I'm sorry we can't serve you the cheese cake because we only have two left!". Confused as ok. So u have 2 left and I want to buy one. ‍ Then she proceeded to ask me if I wanted to pay for the cake because it cost $x? Even more confused as I already said I wanted to buy one and why I came there. After groveling as my only reason for coming was to get the cheese cake for my son's birthday. They finally "let" let me purchase it after a conversation with the same guy who approached me when I arrived. Even the hostess wondered out loud with me. "What difference did it make if I wanted to buy a slice or a whole cake if they are available and not reserved?" Hate to even say that something must have triggered the guy just by the way I looked. If he had done the same thing to the 5 sets of other customers who came after me I would have thought differently. But couldn't think of any other reason for now. I will for sure be back either way. Can't let one guy spoil the rest of the great experience, food, and otherwise friendly and pro wait staff. Also just learned that they charged me more for a whole cheesecake than if I bought it by the slice. WTAF? read more

I went back to Milton's two more time and God knows I've had the worst experience ever. The first time I went back I went in and the hostess instead of helping me and seating me was in the deli cursing at the cashier, and the poor cashier was just standing there taking it. I felt so uncomfortable since I had my niece with us who heard a lot of f bombs she shouldn't have heard. We sat down and the food was way too average this time for the price. I was so embarrassed infront of my guests for the terrible experience. But I tried and gave it another try. Second time we went there we were waiting to get a table and the SAME HOSTESS started speaking in a very rude manner to a costumer and she refused to seat a costumer. When we sat down I wondered why she isn't getting fired and later on I found out from our server that she is the managers daughter. If you want to hire ur relatives you have to fire them if they do something wrong. I have a business of my own and favoritism is the thing that makes a business go down. The food again was very bad compared to the price. Milton's is going downhill without a doubt. I'd never eat there or recommend it to anyone else. read more

Milton's is a deli - seems like an attempt at a Jewish deli. We went with a big group of people and it was fine - service was pretty prompt and the food was good - I mean this is no Langers or Russ n Daughters. The pastrami on rye is good. Definitely good and worth the order. It was that nice smoky crust and delicious texture. Best thing on the menu. The matzo ball soup was meh. I've had way better. It was a little mushy and the chicken broth didn't have any memorable flavor. The cole slaw - it was good, but a little heavy-handed on the mayo. what was weird was that this deli also offered ham sandwiches... wha? read more

Love this place! and the food is delicious. I highly recommend, so much to choose from.

If you're in the mood for a Monte Cristo look no further! This sandwich is deep fried with both ham and turkey and cheesy goodness with strawberry jelly on the side. It also happened to be the lunch special for today with a choice of a side coleslaw or potato salad. A bargain for $9.99. We also opted to get a small side of onion rings to share $3. The Monte Cristo was delicious and the onion rings were nice and crispy, hot and fresh tasting. Challah bread and pickles were brought to table before meal at no extra charge, both were fresh and pickles very crispy and flavorful. They were very busy as it was a Saturday however wait wasn't longer than 10 minutes. They have a huge selection of fresh baked goods and deli meats available for purchase at front of restaurant, nice touch. The only drawback for me is the restaurant itself is quite loud making it hard to hear and carry on a conversation with those at your table. I'd definitely go back and you should stop in if you're in the area. read more

Met my sister and her husband there for lunch. We were seated right next to the kitchen door and the traffic coming out of the kitchen for the entire time we were there was very distracting. My brother in law was in a wheelchair and I wondered if that was the only table available for the handicapped. The server took our order right away and our food arrived timely but that was the last time anyone bothered to stop by our table. We were there for 1 hour and not once were asked if everything was ok or do we need refills. We were completely ignored until the check arrived. We were not asked if we wanted desert or anything. It's like they were trying to hurry us. The food was just average and very overpriced. I don't think we will back. It's as if they don't really care about their guests.! We wert to Miltons on a recommendation of friends. We are from Az and have a great deli there. We had a great waitress, she knew the menu well and was attentive. We ordered a pastrami sandwich on rye, with potato salad and French fries as sides. We asked for fatty pastrami. We were not disappointed in the pastrami! Very flavorful. The bread was a lighter version of rye and felt too soft. The fries were great! I enjoyed the potato salad but my husband did not. We ordered MishMosh soup to go, as well as a slice of carrot cake. Here's where things really fell apart. The soup was so salty we were unable to eat it. The matzo ball was separate and not salty at all. We had to throw it all away. The carrot cake looked delicious and the frosting was very good. It's too bad it was an older, stale cake. I bet it is very good when fresh. Overall, we were very disappointed in the food. My husband called the restaurant and spoke to the manager and she was apologetic and sent us a gift card for our trouble. We are going to give it another chance. read more

In the past we have enjoyed this place. Table service was good. We ordered a brisket dip to share. It arrived and looked rather hastily put together. About half way through we realized it was not brisket...it was roast beef and not very tender. Plus, we were charged for the spilt, an extra $3, which I always find to be a tacky move. As Philly natives with a year and a few months under our belt my family of 5 kids and sweetheart wife figured it was time we checked out what San Diego has to offer regarding a good old-fashioned Delicatessen Restaurant! I was surprised to find out Milton's had Chicago roots so I still need to check out a Deli native in origin to San Diego... That said the staff was incredible! The jovial server who helped get us started with complimentary pickles, water, and bread had me smiling with her quirky humor until our actual server Judy was ready to take our drinks and order. The picked and bread hit the spot! My kids are critics of pickles and these passed with flying colors. Judy was also super-friendly and sincere as she also had no problem winning over my kids. This seems to be a specialty of theirs. We were one of the last party to be sat and at no time did Judy or the staff rush us. In fact, Shannon, who I believe was the owner or manager came over and also chatted with us answering my questions about Milton's. She also had no problem rolling up her sleeves and pitched in to help with our plates. Shannon gave free cookies to my kids and also gave us an order of fries to take home. I got the sense the staff had been together a long time and I always feel that's a good sign and they genuinely liked to work with each other. The kids menu had much to offer and my girls got grilled cheese and my son got a burger. My wife got a Chicken Caesar wrap and I got the Reuben opting for Pastrami. The food was spot on and we were all extremely pleased. Maybe it's just me but my favorite places back home not only had great food, but the staff made us feel like we were regulars from the start and treated us as such. In turn we soon became actual regulars. With so many places to spend our money it means a lot for me to feel welcome and not just another tip to fill a seat. I'm not looking for a Seinfeld soup nazi experience, but a place where my family can enjoy a great meal with great people and not be viewed as odd for having a large family. Speaking of soup... the menu looks to have some wonderful options as well as pot pie options and even Chicago Deep Dish served on select days. There's also a bakery and the bread warms the soul. Hope you enjoyed this review and found it helpful. If you go ask for Judy and tell Shannon she brings some East Coast charm to a Mid West Deli that feels right at home in SoCal or anywhere USA for that matter! My family will soon be calling it home:) read more

Really fantastic place! After your meal you can stop by at the deli to pick up meats and pastries for home * Cute vintage pictures as decor and a paper tablecloth to draw on. Yay! In itself, these factors give the place an extra star. Love colouring while waiting for food. * Appetisers here are really cool: you get glazed rolls and brined pickles - none of that vinegar pickled nonsense! The rolls taste a bit like challah. Would come here for appetisers alone. * Dishes are large! The price may make you squirm a little if you're like me and hate spending more than $10 on a meal, but it's easily 2, maybe even 3 meals worth. Aside from the price, though, the taste and richness of the food more than explains the cost. Fantastic stuff! read more
