This is an all time favorite for our family and friends. It's small but not too small and it's our favorite go to place when we have an occasional splurge dinner by ourselves or when we are entertaining a small group. Everything on the menu is excellent and cooked to perfection. Our favorites are the French Onion Soup and the Roasted Chicken. If interested, they have an excellent selection of beers and wines to enjoy with your meal. The cooks and wait staff are very friendly too. This place will not disappoint. 6-27-19 - This isn't my first review of the Millbrook Cafe and as always, no disappointments! Here is a small, rather intimate setting--with the added pleasure of viewing the wood fired brick oven & grill in the back end of the dining area. There's only a very faint burning odor, barely noticeable, and the A/C is set properly to keep it comfortable even on the hottest days. Alex, the owner/chef mans the grill and cooks pretty much everything in that oven--if you can sit to watch him do his thing, try to, it's fun. Staff is always efficient and friendly. This particular day Patricia was our server and she was lovely. My husband and I weren't really very hungry this afternoon, but we had business in Hudson NY and when returning south to our home, we just couldn't pass by the Millbrook Cafe! Decided on a bottle of Alamos Malbec, an Argentinian wine. $28, and we both enjoyed the dry, fruity and crisp taste. As always, we start with the shrimp cocktail. We think Alex makes the best shrimp cocktail we've ever had--and we order them everywhere we eat. He bakes the shrimp in the oven, then chills them and serves with a lemon and an orange slice and cocktail sauce that's perfect! Six large shrimp, made to order, $12. Awesome. After that, we just ordered a small garden salad each. Fresh, crisp lettuces, cherry tomatoes, carrots and onion. If you like bleu cheese dressing, please try their homemade--soo good! This is one of the best restaurants in Dutchess County. I had the French Onion soup and the NY Strip Steak and it was one of the best meals I've had in a long time. All the entrees are cooked in a wood fired oven which adds a unique flavor to the food. The steak was a great cut of Black Angus and was delicious. Horrible experience, smokers outside the place, you have pass through the gauntlet before you get in. You are greeted with way over priced food, a bartender who can't make a drink because again, no mixers and horrible service. Go to Rhinebeck. Millbrook has no food places to speak of, all want to charge 20+ for a dinner with no drink service, it's a shame as a cute downtown with horrible food. read more

Staying at a friend's in Clinton Corners, Millbrook is closest town with restos so we had lunch and dinner in town. Our dinner at Millbrook cafe exceeded expectations, from my perfect martini to satisfying pork chop to heavenly chocolate lava cake. Nice atmosphere and gracious service all add up to a great meal. read more

The service was slow and the experience was awful. It took an hour and 15 minutes to have lunch. The waitress was in a hurry and kept throwing plates and glasses on the table. I'm amazed she didn't spill anything. I ordered a burger to be cooked medium rare and it came out well done and very dry. It's the first time I've seen a place that serves burgers but no fries. This is one of the best restaurants around!! From a romantic evening out to a family gathering in their private back room...never a disappointment. The unique talent of the chef to prepare your meal in a wooded fireplace makes this a place not to be missed. Whether it is the fillet mignon or the sea bass, it is cooked to perfection. All soups are homemade as are the desserts. The staff is so attentive. Drinks are flowing always(special beers and wines are great!) and their salads and hot rolls are always complementary. Made res for Friday evening but got there Saturday (yesterday) evening as a walk-in. They are hospitable, accommodating. Very nice, friendly owner & staff. Thought the portabella mushroom app was a bit expensive but it was good...just a question, was that jarred garlic or fresh garlic used....tasted like jarred. Had the salmon, shrimp, scallop dinner. It was good; shrimp a bit over cooked, scallops were nice...maybe a minute less "broiling" of the salmon but it was not over cooked. Veggies/rice standard, meh...spotlight is on the meats, seafood & fish broiled in the brick oven. Love their concept of the brick oven...unique...have only seen this in pizza joints. The place became packed...even though the staff did not rush me at all...I felt a bit rushed 'cause the staff rushed around a bit....they had to, it was busy. I would have preferred to sit in the front rather than the area of the bar unless I could have sat along the wall...out of the way of the staff... The prices were decent. The complimentary chocolate fondue a pleasant idea; didn't have dessert 'cause I had the fondue. Thank you for the complimentary anisette. Would like to bring my sis here for lunch. read more

Had a great lunch today. We were a group of 10. The service was very good. My salad and chicken were excellent. Everyone was pleased with their meals. The atmosphere is old European and delightful. The menu was good with prices were reasonable. This is my third visit, and I always enjoyed my meal. Included with lunch was a fruit & chocolate sauce bar. It really hit the spot. Well i guess my stars really fall between two and three stars for this place....it just is nothing special....the atmosphere is very nice...that is the good part....the food is just okay....i had the chicken dish for lunch and it just wasn't anything special....i felt like the chicken was a patty i have purchased at sam's club and added spices to...and the veggies were like what i buy at sams, veggie medley but they added pieces of cabbage....the rice was just okay....the chocolate fondue was nice but only had two melon choices for fruit or a cookie for dipping....to back track, the salad was very nice in the beginning of the meal....just a mixed bag of feelings about this place....probably will not go back... read more

7 of us went for dinner last weekend (Halloween night) and had a really nice time. My wife and I haven't been there for a number of years so we thought we'd try it again. We took about 3 hours and relaxed and had a really good meal. Amongst us we had rack of lamb, haddock, chopped steak, etc. I had a spicy crab and corn chowder that I thought was excellent. Everything is cooked in a wood fired oven which of course has only so much capacity, so if it's busy (and it was), the meals come out a few at a time. It's not McDonald's. For us this is fine as we were having a nice time sampling their pretty decent wine and beer menu and appetizers. The noise level is nice, you can actually have a conversation with someone and it feels very intimate. I had the garlic crusted haddock special for my entree, that was very good - had a nice sear due to the heat of the oven, but maybe only slightly over cooked -- but very tasty. The wood fired oven smells great and gives a nice flavor to the meals but I think if the timing isn't perfect things may end up on the "well done" side quickly - as was my wife's chopped steak (from a local Farm, which we think is great), which could have used some seasoning, or a sauce of some kind, and less cooking. That's the only ding I'd give them don't be shy about some fresh herbs, salt and pepper. The vegetables and starch were very nice, as were the salads. The service was excellent. We were watching the 3 servers working the restaurant and they moved like they were on a mission and really coordinated. Our server was very friendly and attentive and seemed to really know what she was doing. I got a sense she'd worked there for a long time and enjoyed it. Desserts were very good and they have a fun chocolate fondue that comes with your meal as well. After dinner drinks were great, and a nice healthy pour. All in all I felt it was a great value, good food, really nice atmosphere and would go back in a heartbeat. So glad the Millbrook Cafe is around hopefully to stay. :) read more

Visited the restraunt for the first time. The wood fire oven caught my attention . The restraunt was quaint. Noise level wasn't bad. The food was great . Had the seared scallops for an appetizer. Was delicious ! Steak was cook to perfection. They can use another waitress. Service could have been better,waitress seem overwhelmed. Cozy restaurant, excellent service, and expert chef in the kitchen. Everything we ordered was amazing. Most of the food was prepared in a wood fire that you can see from the dining area. We were impressed and will be back. Perfect for just a couple, but there were many families there as well. Well worth the money. Went last night and had an excellent meal, as we usually do. I had the rack of lamb and my wife had the pork dish. Both were prepared well and were accompanied by well seasoned veggies and potatoes. Salad,Dressing was well made. Chocolate fondue and fruit at the end was a nice touch. Only problem I had was the coffee was a little weak.
