    Great location near the water, make sure you get a reservation! The salmon "box" sushi was great, although a bit light on the fish and heavy on the rice. The soft shell crab was fun, although I have had better brussel sprouts elsewhere. My friend got the mushroom risotto--mushrooms came fried, dusted and savory. Overall lots of fun and great drinks.

    Miku is one of those restaurants that comes up again and again when you're researching where to eat in Vancouver--and for good reason. It's beautifully situated right on Coal Harbor, featured on the Michelin Guide, and widely credited with putting Aburi (flame-seared) style cuisine on the map in the city. If you've ever had aburi sushi in Vancouver, there's a good chance you can trace that experience back to Miku's influence. We didn't have reservations and stopped by for a late lunch during an off time, which worked out in our favor. The wait was only about 15 minutes. I would have loved a window seat overlooking the bay (note to self: make a reservation next time), but even without the view the space felt polished, clean, and very spacious. The open kitchen also allowed us to see the chefs carefully assembling and preparing dishes, which added to the experience. The menu featured a variety of options without feeling overwhelming: raw bar, small plates, sushi, aburi oshi, rolls, nigiri, entrées, plus a solid drink list with wines and seasonal cocktails. There was a lot to explore. We started with miso soup and then moved into what I really came for: the salmon aburi oshi sushi. When I travel, I like ordering something that reflects or is unique to the country or city I'm visiting, and pressed BC wild sockeye salmon done in aburi style felt like the perfect Vancouver bite. Creamy, lightly smoky, and beautifully balanced, it was easily my favorite dish. Knowing that Miku helped start Vancouver's aburi story made it even more special. You could feel each individual grain of rice--my chef other half pointed out that this is exactly what you want in high-quality sushi. We also had the Miku roll (salmon, crab, cucumber, Miku sauce, rolled in tobiko), which was fresh and flavorful, and the bluefin trio--akami, chutoro, and otoro--which my guy loved. He commented how fresh it was and how it just melted as soon as you ate it. The only miss for me was the Kyoto saikyo miso sablefish. I wanted to love it, but the pearl millet didn't quite work for my palate and the flavors felt a bit muted compared to everything else on the table. That said, the overall experience was excellent--friendly service, thoughtful food, and a clear sense of why Miku has the reputation it does. If you're visiting Vancouver and want to try the city's signature aburi cuisine at the place that helped define it, I'd check out Miku. It is a bit on the pricier end, but well worth it to try aburi oshi sushi.

    Some of the best sushi I've ever had. Omakase quality for a reasonable price. I paid $45 for the sushi lunch which came with 12 pieces so I got to try a little of everything. It was absolutely amazing.

    Came here for a date night. It's overlooking the water so a prime location in downtown Vancouver. They're recognized in the Michelin Guide and known for Aburi-oshi sushi. It's a type of sushi where the fish is pressed into the rice and then flame seared with charcoal. We got the salmon one and it was definitely the highlight of our meal. Everything else we tried (seafood tower, nigiri) wasn't too memorable or out of the ordinary from other sushi places. I definitely think Miku is more for the ambiance and overall upscale experience than it is for the food.

    Came here with my family to celebrate my daughters birthday. This is a great place for special events. The setting is gorgeous, right next to the water, and the service and wine list befits a Michelin restaurant. They aren't able to sit bigger parties next to a window though. The sushi is spectacular. They specialize in Aburi and that does not disappoint. We had four: - Miku roll, with torched fish eggs, the texture and flavour are incredible. - surf and turf, this has beef tataki and da really different but good flavour - salmon and saba Oshi Aburi. My kids favourite. The flavour - it just melts in your mouth and it is sooo good. The flavour is what really stands out. It's not a huge portion. All the appetizers are excellent. In particular our group loved the tofu salad. My daughter says it's the best salad she ever had. Ebi fritters were outstanding too. Crunchy and delish but somehow light at the same time. The brussel sprouts were a bit spicy. Spinach Gomae has an amazing flavour. The desserts are great too. The banana mousse in particular was sublime. You can't go wrong here for your next occasion.

    The food is absolutely good. Top notch. From the sushi to the grilled fish to the dessert. Even the water tastes good (ie not tap water). The service is good. You can feel there are a few people paying attention to the needs. Although when it's busy, it may take some time to clean the dishes. I knocked out one stat because the restaurant had some serious cleanness issues. We were a bit shocked when seeing a group of flies wondering inside the restaurant near the entrance. There were visible stains on both the glasses and the napkin. There are left over food on the floor when we arrived. It's very unexpected to see things like that in a lovely restaurant like Miku.

    They have a Michelin star. They are located in a fantastic waterfront location. I made reservations for my family about a months in advance, yet with all the walk-ins, all they could give us was a high top at the front entrance next to the hostesses checking people in. The waiter was good. He explained how his restaurant was famous for Aburi sushi. He gave us ideas of what to order. We ended up going with his suggestion of an aburi sampler, their signature selection sushi, and also a spicy kaisen soba peperoncino. The food was okay. The aburi sushi had a thinly sliced piece of protein on it. I've had better salmon aburi sushi at a different restaurant. The rolls were just cut rolls. It was like rolls that I could get anywhere else. The spicy kasen soba was a seafood soba with lots of arugula, some shrimp and mussels. My wife was not that thrilled about it. The location would've been fantastic if we arrived an 2 hours earlier at sundown with its view of the harbor. Instead, we arrived after the sun was down, and everything was dark outside. No view to see from our table. It's okay sushi in a fantastic location. The Michelin star didn't make it taste any better.

    We went to Miku for my birthday in August. We had difficulties to choose what to get so we decided to try both tasting menus to be able to try the most dishes. Loved everything we ate. Food was very tasty, especially fish and seafood. The wagyu was to die for. Best meat I have ever had! The cocktails were delicate with great flavours. I was not disappointed. What could be improved are the desserts. The were ok but I expected better. The were a bit basic. The location near Canada Place makes it a great restaurant to take family and friends coming to visit Vancouver. Enjoy a nice meal while exploring downtown!

    My husband and I had a serendipitous dining experience at Miku after going to the Christmas market downtown. It was pouring outside and Miku was the closest sushi restuaraunt nearby. It was not too busy for a Monday night and we got seated without having to wait, however I would expect it to be very busy in the peak dining days/times. I had this restaurant on my bookmarks but did not realize that they are a Michelin (4 star) restaurant! We were told about the "ABURI" flame broil technique and it was like a very delicate sear on the fish without cooking the fish and still keeping it fresh while elevating the taste. The aburi oysters with truffle was DELICIOUS and I usually love raw oysters but ended up ordering two orders of these oysters because it was SO GOOD. It was probably one of the best oysters I've ever had. We were told by our server that we could not say we have dined in Miku unless we tried the Oishi Miku roll which was like a little bento box sushi with the aburi flame technique. It was also delicious and just warm enough to melt in your mouth. Like a sushi burger. My husband ordered two orders. My husband and I usually like to get nigiri and got the aburi nigiri and found it so much more flavorful than the raw fish. We were also provided two soy sauces: a miku soy sauce which had a sweeter flavor and bonito flake umami and a lighter soy sauce and different fish paired better with each. I highly recommend Miku if you want a unique sushi dining experience - PLEASE get aburi sushi, aburi oysters and oishi miku roll. I am still dreaming of those oysters.

    Came here for dinner after our conference and it was amazing. Was solo inside at the bar. The restaurant was busy and buzzing. Great view of the harbor. The food was delicious and well crafted. The waiter was very attentive, and he honestly looked a lot like Tom Hiddleston. If you get a chance to come here, check it out.

    Everything we had at Miku was amazing -- from the lobster ceviche to the sashimi and sushi, it did not disappoint. The wine list was excellent as well, and we especially enjoyed a beautiful Sancerre. Wonderful atmosphere and service. We'll definitely be back next time we're in Vancouver!

    I met a group of friends here for a leisurely post-holiday lunch. We ordered an assortment of sushi, sashimi and appetizers to share. Expectations were high due to Miku's reputation, and we were (mostly) not disappointed. Standouts: the steamed mussels in a buttery sake sauce, the ebi fritters in a well-seasoned, paper-thin crisp crust, and the deeply umami saba oshi sushi. Not so much: the highly- anticipated Miku and Red Wave rolls. Visually they were stunning but the rice was hard and refrigerator cold. Service was attentive and considerate, the booth was comfy and the view of the water was spectacular.

    Yet another sushi delight at Miku over New Year's. We managed to grab a last-minute lunch reservation New Year's Eve Day, and order the Signature Shokai (of course). The appetizer was Ebi fritters and miso-glazed sablefish, which were both delicious and substantial. The sushi was delicious as well. Our service this time was improved over our last visit--the server was attentive and friendly, and I think it also helped to be seated at a table vs. at the sushi bar (where we were last time). Do give Miku a try!

But in other parts of the world the meal is what's important and so is a quick turn around. Guu with Garlic reminded me a lot of the Izakaya restaurants I found under the train lines of Tokyo in many ways, including the amount of time it felt right to stay. The food came out quick, the servers took orders quicker, and the alcohol came out chilled and as nice contrast to the hot food. Looking around and you see the hand written menu on blackboard surfaces on the walls and this feeling of authenticity. The heat of the flames from the kitchen can be felt and seen if you sit at the bar. And the flavors just hit all the right notes. Starting with appetizers, a section izakayas shine at, the first dish we got was their scallop and mayo pizza. With a crispy crunch on the bottom and crust, this reminds you of the flavors of a baked volcano roll or scallop roll you can find in almost any North American sushi restaurant. Just like that dish, it's important to eat it while it's still hot so it doesn't get gross and 느끼 에. Then came the yellowtail tuna "tempura" pieces. Thick pieces of yellowtail tuna flash fried for just the right crisp on the outside with slight pink of the fish inside. It is meaty without being oily or fatty. Great bite. The beef tongue after was interesting. From the color of the sauce it accompanies it you would think it would be heavy in flavor but it is actually light and citrusy. A good cut into the richer tones of the beef tongue. The yaki udon was one of the best I ever had. It was smokey without being overpowering. The beef was thin and tender and balanced well with the mushrooms it also came with. The udon noodles stayed bouncy and chewy which I didn't expect from being grilled. Very tasty and highly recommend this dish. For our final bite we shared a hot stone bowl of their pork and cabbage rice. With the hot stone bowl constantly cooking even after this dish arrived it was imperative to stir the ingredients together constantly for the first two minutes. It allowed for the runny egg to meld with the rice and the crispy texture of some ingredients was a nice bonus. All in all, I loved eating here and if my appetite was bigger I would've tried more on their menu. A solid place to eat with a great atmosphere, if you're looking for delicious food that won't take too much of your time but still lingers in your memories you have to check out Guu with Garlic.

But since they serve it in a broth, it does get soggy really quick. Still good, but after a few minutes its just soggy. The broth is nice with rice; comforting kind of meal. The unlimited rice/soup/cabbage is just icing on the cake. My dining partner had the Kake udon (pretty good, noodles good texture and slightly smaller strands than most places) and Menchi Cheese side - basically a pork meatball with cheese and deep fried katsu-style, served with katsu sauce. This was excellent. My original review still stands. Excellent katsu, plus they have the consistency and reliability. $28-30/meal and its plenty of food for 1, especially with unlimited cabbage/rice/soup. Restaurant is nice and comfortable, good spacing and not cramped. Easy recommend. 5/5.

Okeya Kyujiro is a Michelin one-star theatrical omakase restaurant, and when they say theatrical, they mean it! From the moment you're welcomed by smiling ushers in kimono to the closing tea ceremony, every movement feels intentional, precise, and elevated. The ambiance is serene and anticipatory. At the start, guests sit in silence as a black screen conceals the chefs. You see their shadows moving behind it. A bell rings, the screen lifts, and the performance begins. Dinner is a 25+ course experience priced at $325 per person. It's undeniably a splurge, but for a milestone celebration, it feels justified. The menu is seafood-forward, with many ingredients flown in from Japan. Each ingredient is presented before preparation, then carefully assembled and served directly from chef to guest. Courses arrive one by one, never rushed. The service team moves seamlessly in the background, refilling water and attending to drinks (available as an add-on) without disrupting the flow. The finale is a matcha ceremony, whisked in front of you with the same quiet precision that defines the evening. When the final sip is taken, the bell chimes once more, the chefs and staff bow, and the screens close. It was a beautifully choreographed dining experience, perfect for marking a special moment, and one I'd gladly return to for the next celebration.

This is a more theatrical style so expect louder music and a more theatrical experience (eg one of the servers played the flute for the guests celebrating birthdays). I prefer a more intimidate and interactive style of omakase where you can talk with the chefs. This lunch also felt a little fast in terms of progression of the meal. Some of the dishes were very tasty while others didn't wow us. With drinks, we were quite full despite some reviews saying portion is on the smaller size. Our total was around $500 with drinks for 2 people. A really good experience for omakase, especially if you are looking for a unique experience though not my favourite one I've tried.

I noted how small this place was, and crowded, with the tables close together and a long bar with a counter and barstools there (also close together). Our reserved table was right by the front door - literally, - so every time the door opened, we got a gust of cold air (and it was a cold February night when we were there). I kept my coat on. Truth be known, I was not very comfortable. Also, it was loud. Very loud. I like how the staff shout Japanese greetings to diners whenever they enter but between the frequent shouts and the sheer volume of chatter from all the diners, all sitting close together in close proximity, it was kinda hard to hear what my friends were saying during our dinner. That said, the environment was super vibrant and, again, my friends said this was very typical of an Izakaya in Japan. Food-wise, I have no idea what my friends ordered. The menu was primarily available by way of a QR code and I had no idea what the dishes were, so I deferred to my friends' knowledge. But I can attest that all the dishes were DELICIOUS. We had some sort of Japanese street food "pancakes" (they were wonderful). We had some sort of stirfry beef with noodles (amazing). We had two types of sashimi (omg both were so fresh and so so good!). We had a few other dishes that I can't recall, but I remember I loved them. So.... the food here was GREAT. Service was also attentive which I hadn't expected, being as busy as the restaurant was. I really liked this place but I'll probably go back in the summertime when the weather is nicer as I was cold there, and I'd dine at an off-time, when the volume wasn't so loud. (I'm too old for the loudness!).

We picked up the 16-piece Premium Cut Rolls (toro, yellowtail, scallop, and truffle lobster), and the quality really showed in the taste. Everything was clean, fresh, and well-balanced -- no heavy sauces, no distractions, just really good fish. The toro was rich and smooth, the scallop was buttery, and the truffle lobster added a nice depth without overpowering the roll. Pickup was quick and seamless, and the food was packaged well for eating on the go before a flight. Portions are standard, but the flavor and quality are absolutely the highlight here. If you care more about how sushi tastes than flashy extras, Hello Nori is a great choice. Would happily come back next time.
