We tried a few other places after the last review, but missed Mikko so tried it out again last night. We immediately called upon placing the order and explained the last few orders have arrived incorrectly and requested it be double checked prior to pick up. The staff member confirmed they would check, but this was obviously a miss. Paid $17 for a soft shell crab hand roll and received a completely different item, not to mention the price difference. Not sure if requesting green onion in the order notes is requiring staff to reenter the order onsite, but if this is the case perhaps add it back as an option for customers to select when placing the order like before? It's not an uncommon modifier and I'd gladly pay to add it as I do with the cucumber. It's a shame because the quality is great, but not receiving what we paid for now four times in a row is ridiculous. read more

I never write reviews, but I had to. This was one of the worst dining experiences I've had. Our waitress checked on us only once, right when our food arrived. At that moment I was busy cutting my daughter's food, so I hadn't even had a chance to realize my order was wrong. I also had to get up and ask for utensils because we weren't given a fork or knife. After that, she disappeared. She never came back to check on us, never asked how the food was, and never once checked to see if we needed drink refills. By the time she finally returned near the end of our meal, I told her my roll had been made incorrectly. Her only response was, "Oh, sorry about that.And then she walked away When the bill came, I asked her to remove the extra avocado charge because I had specifically requested the avocado on top of the roll, not inside. She didn't ask her manager to remove it--she simply told me they couldn't take it off because I had already eaten it. I had even pointed out the mistake earlier when she saw my last piece, but nothing was done. That response was frustrating. The issue wasn't whether I ate it, The issue was that my order wasn't prepared the way I requested. I only ate it because I was there with my child, it was getting late, and no one ever came back to our table to fix it. To top it off, we had to ask twice just to get a to-go box. Between the lack of service, never checking on our drinks, the incorrect order, and the unwillingness to make things right, this was a very disappointing experience. We won't be returning. read more

Mikko is always a great choice when in Vista. I ordered my food to go but even that experience wasn't lacking. Some restaurants when order to go just had off your food and it doesn't feel like much of a welcome or anything. Just a here ya go and see ya. When I picked my food up, Alina (Hope I got that right) greeted me with a lovely greeting and a nice smile. Was super friendly and helpful :). Now the food. I ordered some miso soup, spicy seafood poke bowl, and a pipeline roll. The miso soup was good (hard to do that wrong haha. The poke bowl, to be honest it was good but nothing to write home about. I feel like the amount of lettuce and cabbage was a little overkill compared to the amount of fish. It was good but I personally probably wouldn't order that again. We've been going to Mikko Sushi for years and really enjoy it. Our go-to order is sharing three rolls for lunch -- the Waimea, Albacore Special, and the Samurai. The fish is fresh, the flavors are well-balanced, and the presentation is always nice. We used to come more often when they offered happy hour specials, which made the pricing feel more reasonable. Since they removed happy hour, it's become more of an occasional treat. For reference, my husband and I typically share three rolls at lunch and it comes out to around $80, with most rolls priced at $20+. We still enjoy coming here and would recommend it, but we do wish they offered a lunch or happy hour menu like some of the other sushi spots nearby to make it easier to visit more often. read more

It's a pretty solid sushi spot overall. It's located in downtown Vista, there's street parking, some lots nearby and also a parking garage a couple blocks down. Depending on the day and time, parking can fill up but there's usually a spot *somewhere* not too far. There's patio seating and also a decent amount of space inside. The times I've gone, the service has been fairly prompt. The biggest plus I'd say about this place is that the nigiri portions are really good. They give you a lot of fish for each piece. Half of the rolls were ready at the promised time, while the rest were still being prepared when we arrived. The rolls were smaller compared to those from other local sushi spots, but they were still flavorful and well-prepared. We enjoyed a few appetizers along with a variety of specialty rolls. Our favorites were the Hawaiian, Pipeline, Yellowtail Maki, and Waimea rolls, they were creative, well-balanced, and delicious. One helpful tip: if you're ordering pickup, use the restaurant's official website to bypass third-party platforms, which often add unnecessary fees and may not reflect the most accurate menu or pricing. Overall, despite the wait and limited space, the quality of the food made up for it. I'd be happy to return, perhaps for dine-in next time to fully enjoy the experience, or really any day but Saturday. It was nice having some privacy in the back. We ordered the stuffed jalapenos and seaweed salad to start, both were amazing. We got the Waimea and Endless Summer rolls for our mains. I have been coming to Mikkos for ~15 years (since Carlsbad was still the OG). Once Carlsbad closed, we opted to try the Vista location when they opened. Happy to say we've been coming here regularly ever since. Food is delicious and consistent and they have plenty of options. They still maintain some traditional Japanese dishes which also reassuring. We visited Mikko on a weekday around 3:30pm with my mother. There were 3 tables sat and we were quickly greeted and seated at a booth. As time went by it got quite busy, which was surprising for a weeknight, but gave me hope! We ordered a shrimp tempura appetizer and 4 rolls to share. My mom ordered the tempura combo dinner. One thing that was quite alarming was the vibe... I don't know how to explain it, but is was feeling of being unwelcome into their restaurant. What made it worse was my mother asked the girl who was expediting to-go orders for a straw when she walked by... and she said sure and walked away to continue doing her order expediting while telling our server something. Our server appeared at our table blank faced and said "you have a problem?" my mom, me AND my boyfriend looked at each other so confused and said "no....? We DID just ask for a straw though....but the other girl said she was bringing it." She then reached in her apron and handed us a straw, said no words, and walked away. Now, what's weird is, the girl we asked originally for a straw had a bunch in HER apron! Hence, why we were just so baffled at the response to our question. I am not one to pull this card lightly, but I felt like we were treated that way because of what they may have thought our ethnic background was? My mom is filipino, but my boyfriend and I look middle eastern to most people... and if thats the reason why we got treated that way (felt like it) then that's terrible. ANYWAYS. That was our restaurant employee experience which honestly knocks down my rating the most because that's just terrible customer service, and almost made us leave if the food hadn't come out shortly after the experience. Let's get into food because we cannot punish the cooks for bad waitresses. The food, was wonderful. Sushi was fresh and ingredients well thought out for each roll. The tempura was some of the BEST I've ever had... and I've had a lot of tempura in my lifetime. I say this because it wasn't overly greasy or overly battered. I added pictures and a caption of what each item is for everyone to look at. Now, would I ever visit again? No. The food was wonderful, but there are a lot of other sushi spots nearby that have BOTH great food AND stellar service consistently. I recommend this restaurant only for their food, so maybe get some to-go, at least we know from this experience that they have someone FULLY attentive to that sole purpose of to-go orders.. read more

So, we love this place. After having sushi at a few new places and giving them a try, we went back to Mikko last week. I don't know why we ever go anywhere else. The food here never disappoints. Thoughtful servers and in a cute walkable downtown location in Vista. Only one thing would make this place better, a sushi bar! Open the bar up!!! This is our "Go To" for all things Sushi and other yummy dishes. We drive a pretty fair distance and are never disappointed. The lunch bento box, (before 4:00 p.m.) is such a treat and the generous portions and variety are a perfect combo for an early dinner or late lunch. I highly recommend the teriyaki salmon, California roll and tempura sampler, while my husband is addicted to the spicy chicken teriyaki and gyoza. Another seemingly minor menu item is their miso soup which is so good that we actually order it to take home for its soothing "comfort food" qualities.
