I'm not from the area but travel to the VA every once in a while. It's up the street. I told myself I would stop sometime. I mean.... steak sub! Today I stopped. Friendly staff. I wasn't disappointed. This steak sub is one of the best!

The only "Mike's Steak" I used to know is the "Mics Take" that those people at that club on the West Side (or was it Black Rock) did when they stole my microphone after I played for free at a benefit there. Grrr. I guess they really did benefit from my presence. In England, when you make fun of someone it's called a Mickey-Take. (Or a P... never mind). In America, a Mickey Take is known colloquially as a Mike's Take. Ok now I'm just rambling. It's been a long time since I had a cheesesteak from Mike's Steak Joint, but I remember that it was really delicious. I don't think I like it as much as Shia's which is downtown on Jefferson, but it's very good, and an excellent alternative to Jim's Steak Out. I'll need to try it again sometime soon so I can make a proper comparison and decide if it's a 5/5. Edit: So I tried it again, and I really liked it. I ordered the wrong thing, and when I changed it, they charged me for the wrong thing that they made (negative point) but only half-price (positive point) and it turned out that I really enjoyed trying both of them anyway, and the one I didn't mean to order was actually even better. The Beef In The Hood is the really good one, it's made with smoked sausage. The Steak In The Hood is made with Italian Sausage and it's a little less tasty, other than that they are identical so I recommend the former, not the latter. Just because of high-ish prices and because it doesn't taste as good as Shia's to me (and maybe not as good as the Diavlo at Jim's), I'm keeping it as a 4-star but it is a very very high 4-star. Still, if you are a fan of Mike's, try Shia's near downtown and see what you think. On Jefferson, I think. As for Mike's... It's in an area that a lot of people don't go to, yet it's only a short distance south of UB South, so I wish it was more popular. Bailey Seafood is this direction too, you could get a delicious Cheesesteak and the best Fish Sandwich in the Universe all in one fell swoop! That's like, when a bird tries to do a nose dive and then hits the ground accidentally. A fell swoop, because it fell during a swoop. No?

I just have to point out this part of town was very affluent in the 80s. Huge homes and pretty girls were a staple until the cocaine hit the East Side like a ton of bricks. Literally. The East Side blessed with some really great street foods and the Italians with their passion for customer service and flavor made street foods a way of art and culinary genius. I am not being over the top when I say genius. I've been to other cities and the street foods are not the same. Even in Philadelphia the steak and cheese sandwich is hit or miss. Leaving me to wonderwhy do they bare the namesake? Buffalo has the best grill action on the East Coast. Pizza the best. Hoagies the best. Cheese Steaks the best. Hot Dogs the best. Burgers too easy. We Do Street Food, because it's what we do. I worked Mikes grill back in 91'. I learned so much in a short time. Feeding drunk college kids from UB, made me a better cook indeed. This neighborhood deserves some respect. East of Main Street has felt a lot of hard times. Its a huge part of the foods and flavors of Western New York. The special sauce is Scotty's very own yellow steak sauce. He deserves more credit. A true street food legend in every right. I love Mikes Steak Hoagies. This review is in memory of the legendary Scotty's Steak Hoagies on Jefferson Ave.

A friend of mine was looking for a ChopBurger.. this is something that I've never had.. so I did some research and came across this place.. the lady who took the order was so nice and professional, that is the only reason for the 2 stars.. The subs were dry and had no flavor..I also asked for mayo and I didn't see that on my sub.. on my photo you will see cheese but it literally was only in that 1 area of the sub.. this was just a disappointment and a waste of money..

I have been making my rounds to the steak hoagies spots in the inner city of Buffalo and almost forgot about this spot. Yes it is in the inner city. Yes you may not be used to the neighborhood but it is not far from where I grew up. And yes we have some of the best food around!!!! :) This spot is a few blocks from UB's south campus and Veterans Hospital at bailey and Minnesota Ave . If you want a great steak hoagie this is one of the places you must go to. I have added a picture of the menu. There specialties are Steak Hoagies, Chicken Hoagies, Turkey Hoagies and Steak with pork or beef sausage. They also have tacos and claim to have invented the steak taco. Hots subs, wings and other items grace the menu. Today I ordered a "Steak in the hood" with pork sausage. It included cheese, lettuce, tomato, cooked onions, mayo and their special sauce. Yes, Yes, Yes! I am still in heaven. They have daily Lunch specials and also accept credit cards for those who don't want to carry cash...lol

Steak in the Hood with Pork Sausage! Omfg it's good. Right along the Steak Taco. An people the small is good for a bunch I'll assume with either. You're not here for the anterior. The ambiance is minimalistic. The staff is amazing, very courteous and friendly. It's the food though..mmmmm perfect bite to eat in a hurry. Or in a drunken slumber.. Or btw classes consider ub is like 5 min away. That steak taco was great, nice amount of meat and veggies but the Steak in Hood really hit the spot. So utterly delicious. Def a place I'd come back to!

I worked here back in 91'. Do the young guy still own it ? I think his name was Mike lol. I learned a lot from this place about working the grill. Greatest hole in the wall in NY.

No, Mike is not the owner any longer.

This food was so good it's making me come out of Yelp semi-retirement…read more A certain hot chicken sandwich chain was giving out free sandwiches with a download of their app today, and as we drove by the restaurant I knew it was not in the cards - that place was PACKED. So instead, I perused Yelp for other fast dinner options. Here I came across HCK Hot Chicken, skimmed reviews (I rarely let other people sway my opinions anyway) and after checking the small-ish menu we decided to check it out. THANK GOODNESS WE DID. The space only had a few people when we got here, and after sitting and waiting for food I did notice many to-go/takeout orders come and go. They have a SOLID menu, with many staple chicken dishes (chicken sandwich, chicken & waffles, even a mac & cheese bowl), and of course, hot sauce of varying degrees. There's also a big ol' neon sign that says "HALAL" over their menu, so I'm assuming they ARE halal to some extent (would ask to confirm). I ain't no pansy, so I got a medium heat chicken sandwich. If that's not your baseline, you don't know hot chicken baby!! One of two combos (the other being just tenders) comes with the sandwich, fries, and a drink for about $15. My husband ordered the mac and cheese bowl, also medium. Now, you know how sometimes you order medium heat, and it's more like a warmer mild? Well, that's definitely not the case here. This is where HKC would get an extra star from me if it could. SIX stars for a medium hot chicken sandwich that was ACTUALLY medium, ACTUALLY cleared out my sinuses pretty well, and the fact that I slammed that sandwich down like it was my job speaks volumes. I tried my husband's Mac too, and it was so, so good. Y'all underestimate how much I've fallen for this place. I don't even live in the area anymore, and I'm already plotting ways and reasons for me to come over here so I can stop by for lunch when so desired. Staff was also very pleasant! We didn't spend too much time waiting in the lobby, an our food was out within 10 minutes of ordering. They're advertising as "made to order" and I can concur with that - our meals were fresh, and of course, HOT! I need these guys to move next door to my house! Until then, I'll be back to visit soon for sure.

Getting there just after 1PM on a Monday there was a line inside, to the door to place orders... the wait afterwards was about 10 minutes. I love bologna sandwiches and I also really enjoy a nice beef on Weck, so I was happy they offered a mini beef sandwich, still on kummelweck, which I got along with their bologna sandwich with provolone, onions, and peppers on it. The bologna sandwich was flame grilled and tasted excellent! I added jalapeños to it for a little kick, as well as some mayo and that made the sandwich really tasty! I started with their split pea soup - It was really good! It had big chunks of smokey, flavorful ham in it and the texture was thick and the flavor was great! I also tried a side of their mustard potato salad and it was decent, but I think it had pimentos or pickles in it, which I don't prefer. Last up - That mini beef sandwich - AWESOME! The bun really added the excellent flavor you'd expect from having the meat on that type of roll. The beef was tender and so flavorful! They also have horseradish on the tables, so I added a bunch of it and that really made the flavor pop! Service was excellent and very friendly here. I'd highly recommend stopping in!
