Ordered a chicken finger sub during a hectic work day. I have to admit it was good, but the menu said it came plain or with hot sauce (hot, med, mild). There was no option for this in the order menu, only for extra sauce on the side for 92 cents? You also have to pay extra for blue cheese, but I guess the sub itself is a fair price, so no biggie. Also, I should've read it more carefully, but did NOT expect mayo on a chicken finger sub in Buffalo. Nevertheless it got here quick, still hot, not soggy or anything, tasted good. When I say that steak was a 2. That's it hunn. We all ordered steak subs. All of us were disappointed and we got different kinds. None of ours were made correctly. The extra topping we paid for were placed in any of our subs. We waited a significant amount of time for our good. The cashier was nice. The food was just disappointing and lacked flavor. I got steak and sausage it was supposed to have extra sauce and extra cheese onions and lettuce and tomatoes. It had no extra anything the steak was dang near dry and no lettuce and tomato. The only "Mike's Steak" I used to know is the "Mics Take" that those people at that club on the West Side (or was it Black Rock) did when they stole my microphone after I played for free at a benefit there. Grrr. I guess they really did benefit from my presence. In England, when you make fun of someone it's called a Mickey-Take. (Or a P... never mind). In America, a Mickey Take is known colloquially as a Mike's Take. Ok now I'm just rambling. It's been a long time since I had a cheesesteak from Mike's Steak Joint, but I remember that it was really delicious. I don't think I like it as much as Shia's which is downtown on Jefferson, but it's very good, and an excellent alternative to Jim's Steak Out. I'll need to try it again sometime soon so I can make a proper comparison and decide if it's a 5/5. Edit: So I tried it again, and I really liked it. I ordered the wrong thing, and when I changed it, they charged me for the wrong thing that they made (negative point) but only half-price (positive point) and it turned out that I really enjoyed trying both of them anyway, and the one I didn't mean to order was actually even better. The Beef In The Hood is the really good one, it's made with smoked sausage. The Steak In The Hood is made with Italian Sausage and it's a little less tasty, other than that they are identical so I recommend the former, not the latter. Just because of high-ish prices and because it doesn't taste as good as Shia's to me (and maybe not as good as the Diavlo at Jim's), I'm keeping it as a 4-star but it is a very very high 4-star. Still, if you are a fan of Mike's, try Shia's near downtown and see what you think. On Jefferson, I think. As for Mike's... It's in an area that a lot of people don't go to, yet it's only a short distance south of UB South, so I wish it was more popular. Bailey Seafood is this direction too, you could get a delicious Cheesesteak and the best Fish Sandwich in the Universe all in one fell swoop! I recently ordered steak hoagies for the first time from Mikes. I was very underwhelmed. the steak was mushy like wet ground beef and the texture was completely off. The taste was nothing left to be desired of and the sauce was not impressionable at all. definitely one of the worst I've ever had. I definitely would never ever order from there anything at all. I just have to point out this part of town was very affluent in the 80s. Huge homes and pretty girls were a staple until the cocaine hit the East Side like a ton of bricks. Literally. The East Side blessed with some really great street foods and the Italians with their passion for customer service and flavor made street foods a way of art and culinary genius. I am not being over the top when I say genius. I've been to other cities and the street foods are not the same. Even in Philadelphia the steak and cheese sandwich is hit or miss. Leaving me to wonderwhy do they bare the namesake? Buffalo has the best grill action on the East Coast. Pizza the best. Hoagies the best. Cheese Steaks the best. Hot Dogs the best. Burgers too easy. We Do Street Food, because it's what we do. I worked Mikes grill back in 91'. I learned so much in a short time. Feeding drunk college kids from UB, made me a better cook indeed. This neighborhood deserves some respect. East of Main Street has felt a lot of hard times. Its a huge part of the foods and flavors of Western New York. The special sauce is Scotty's very own yellow steak sauce. He deserves more credit. A true street food legend in every right. I love Mikes Steak Hoagies. I have been making my rounds to the steak hoagies spots in the inner city of Buffalo and almost forgot about this spot. Yes it is in the inner city. Yes you may not be used to the neighborhood but it is not far from where I grew up. And yes we have some of the best food around!!!! :) This spot is a few blocks from UB's south campus and Veterans Hospital at bailey and Minnesota Ave . If you want a great steak hoagie this is one of the places you must go to. I have added a picture of the menu. There specialties are Steak Hoagies, Chicken Hoagies, Turkey Hoagies and Steak with pork or beef sausage. They also have tacos and claim to have invented the steak taco. Hots subs, wings and other items grace the menu. Today I ordered a "Steak in the hood" with pork sausage. It included cheese, lettuce, tomato, cooked onions, mayo and their special sauce. A friend of mine was looking for a ChopBurger.. this is something that I've never had.. so I did some research and came across this place.. the lady who took the order was so nice and professional, that is the only reason for the 2 stars.. The subs were dry and had no flavor..I also asked for mayo and I didn't see that on my sub.. on my photo you will see cheese but it literally was only in that 1 area of the sub.. this was just a disappointment and a waste of money.. read more

Steak in the Hood with Pork Sausage! Omfg it's good. Right along the Steak Taco. An people the small is good for a bunch I'll assume with either. You're not here for the anterior. The ambiance is minimalistic. The staff is amazing, very courteous and friendly. It's the food though..mmmmm perfect bite to eat in a hurry. Or in a drunken slumber.. Got a steak hoagie and a turkey hoagie both were very good. The steak was a little bit too greasy but still one of the best in buffalo. I have had a chicken souvlaki before and it was kind of plain but did have a generous amount of chicken. I would recommend they make some type of sauce for the souvlaki maybe like a garlic sauce that souvlaki places often have. read more

Picture Buffalo, NY circa 1999. My roommate and I were driving home from the bars at 3AM. We were hungry. We resigned ourselves to eating peanut butter out of a jar with spoons. Then I saw a light. M! Pull over! I see food! She looked at me like I was crazy. Inna I am NOT pulling over in this neighborhood she says to me. Whatever. I told her to stay in the car and lock her doors and I was going to go in and get food. Thinking back, I guess the neighborhood was kind of rough then (it's gotten a lot better over the years) compared with the rest of Buffalo. I find the best food comes from rough neighborhoods. Best steak subs in Buffalo. I kept coming back for years for the steak, onion and cheese version with their special sauce. It's so big it could feed 3 people. Everyone I brought there got addicted. Luckily for me my brother ended up living just up the street from it a few years later, so I had plenty of excuses to come often. I miss it! read more

I would change nothing about the steak sub. So delicious. Packed with meat that's diced to shreds. Perfect ratio of ingredients. The steak really speaks for itself. The steak sauce we got on the side was delicious too. Sort of like a mustardy feel but not. The French fries were pretty straight forward. Nice crunch to them. The people working were beyond friendly. The atmosphere ain't much to look at, but let's be real, you wouldn't expect that from this kind of place. Some may be wary of the location, but after you've had just one bite of their immaculately delicious and low priced Subs I can personally guarantee you that if this sub joint was in the center of a Gulag in Pyongyang, North Korea where the only way to get to it was via helicopter drop, after which you had to personally karate fight the entire North Korean army with nothing but a plastic butter knife, you'd sell your children's health insurance policies just so you could afford that helicopter ticket. read more

Another ghetto looking spot on Bailey but surprisingly legit on the inside. I was skeptical as I read the sign in the parking lot: "Parking restricted ACCEPT for Mike's Steak Joint customers." Thankfully, their food was a notch above their spelling prowess. My $7 footlong steak sub on a white roll was "Subway-esque" but much more flavorful. The only downside was that it was dripping with oil - not the point where my bread was getting soggy but be prepared to have a lot of spillage below your sub. Nevertheless, this place seems like a good drunk late-night spot if it wasn't for the sketch area. I wouldn't dare be stumbling in this area at night but if you happen to find yourself tipsy during the daytime and looking for something that hits the spot and does a number on your GI tract, Mike's is there. read more

After a late night hankering for a chicken hoagie and fed up with the overpriced sloppy sandwiches that are Jim's, memory brought me back to my college days when I lived right down the street from Mike's Steak Joint. Delivery of my chicken hoagie and fries was prompt and the price was right. The toasted bun was still crispy when it arrived, and it was made correctly with the modifications I requested (no lettuce, tomato and mayo). The fries were well seasoned with a Lawry's-like blend and not soggy. My only issue with my order that night was the absence of my extra side of "special sauce", which cost .65 cents. I ordered from Mike's again today, but for pick up this time. I ordered the lunch special which included an 8" chicken hoagie, small order of fries and a can of soda. They had given me a ten minute wait time and it was ready right on time, being packed up moments after I walked in. The fries weren't quite as crispy by the time I arrived home and were less seasoned than when I had ordered delivery but all is forgiven because I walked out with all this food for $7.01!! A similar meal at JSO would probably cost double what I paid at Mike's plus JSO, as most of you probably know, does not deliver. Their menu isn't quite as extensive as I remember from my college days, but the quality of the food is better and the interior of the establishment has also improved from my recollection.
