Updating our review a few years later now that we've actually been able to come sit down for dinner! Husband and I ordered the Guizhou Style Spicy Beef Mifen and a regular Beef Mifen. Note that both photos look pretty much the same at first glance. The Guizhou style mifen is almost the same but a tad spicer and much much more sour (that's what the Guizhou style means!). After trying both - I preferred the regular beef mifen since I appreciate more hearty, beefy broth but my husband ended up liking the more sour version in the Guizhou. Both soups were great and the mifen had a nice chewy texture. Inside is a bit smaller and I've seen the lines get quite long outside during peak dinner times so would recommend coming a bit earlier. read more

We were looking for some noodles while in the area and decided to check out mifen101. When we arrived for dinner around 6pm on a weekday, the restaurant was packed and a line was forming outside. What I do appreciate is that there isn't a paper waitlist, it's just stand in line and wait your turn type of situation, which is old school and I much prefer it. The line moved quickly and we were seated within 15 minutes. For food, we started off with the pickled cucumber and pork&cabbage dumplings. Both were really tasty and was probably the best part of the meal. For my noodle soup, I went with the beef tendon mifen. The beef tendon in the soup was so tender and delicious. The noodles were good but the broth for me was too salty. I went spicy (but not the spiciest) and I think that was the wrong choice because it made the soup salty to the point where I was good after about 1/3 of the way through the bowl. For the area, I thought the menu was affordable and great value given the portion sizes. Most of the mifen soups were under $15, along with their appetizers and dumplings. Had a chance to visit Mifen - which specializes in Chinese Noodle Soups and is quite authentic. This is a small shop located on Castro Street - easy to miss but definitely give it a try. When we walked in around 8ish all the tables were full but thankfully we were quickly seated. Once we sat down I got to try: *Cabbage/Pork dumplings - these were super juicy and flavorful and came with a soy chili oil sauce which was nice. Super popular spot for noodle soups in downtown Mountain View. My party of 3 came by around 5:45 pm on a Tuesday evening and had to wait a couple minutes for a table, and as we were eating we saw the line get longer. Most of the customers were Chinese; we were one of the two tables speaking English, so you know the food here is legit. The restaurant itself is tiny, with the seating space split into two sides by a wall in the middle. There are 4-5 tables on each side, as well as 2 outdoor tables. The menu is just one page and pretty straightforward. There are a bunch of appetizers and small dishes, like braised dishes and dumplings, and the entrees are various noodle soups with different meats. I had the beef tendon mifen ($14.99) and asked for no cilantro or green onions. It came out very quickly and was piping hot. The remaining toppings other than the meat are raw onions and two types of pickled veggies. I really liked the noodles, which are these silky smooth noodles made from rice. They're great for slurping! The soup had great flavor, and I was really happy they didn't skimp on the beef tendon, which was super tender. Portions were huge as well. I was absolutely stuffed by the end. My one complaint is that I wish they included actual veggies like bokchoy as part of the noodle soup rather than raw onions and pickled vegetables. It was a lot of pickled veggies to the point where I couldn't finish them all. One friend got the signature beef ($13.99) and enjoyed it as well, but my vegetarian friend got the vegetarian mifen soup ($10.99) and absolutely hated it. Said it was super bland and barely had any flavor. It was a bit better after chili oil and vinegar to his soup, but still he didn't like it that much and only finished half. This place is popular in my circle. I dined here a while back but was too busy talking and didn't focus on the food. This time I came with two other friends and ordered quite a few items: three different noodles, pulled pork sandwich, various cold dishes (seaweed, lamb spine, beef). The noodles were good but portion was small. I was on a low carb diet but I ate one full bowl of noodle and two pulled pork sandwiches and I still wasn't full. The pulled pork sandwiches impressed me most and I will actually consider coming back just to pick up some of those. The cold dishes were ordinary, with lamb spine being kinda flavorless and dry so I wouldn't recommend. The restaurant is very small with some outdoor seating, come prepared for a line. I heard some folks working at Google come here regularly and I can see why: the price and the location. I will give it 4 stars. read more

I like how it's a little different compared to your typical beef noodle soup. Love how they give a good amount of beef! I feel like other places usually don't give much beef and skimp on it. It's also nice how the beef cubes are on the smaller side so it's easy to eat. The broth is so flavorful and amazing. I really like the pickled veggies they add in too! I never leave any bad reviews, but this experience was beyond unacceptable. The food tasted absolutely awful -- bland, greasy, disgusting! The mackerel dumpling is awful, beef tripe is even more awful , the flavor and texture are soooo disgusting ! It was as if no one in the kitchen had tasted what they were serving. Nothing was fresh, and some of it even tasted questionable, like it had been sitting out for days The seasoning was either non-existent or overbearing in all the wrong ways. The dish I ordered was supposed to be flavorful, but instead it was a soggy, tasteless mess. Honestly, the frozen dumplings and any brand chili oil sold in supermarkets would've been an upgrade. The mackerel dumplings were a total miss -- in the worst way, with a mushy texture and smelled very wired, that made them hard to even finish. The beef tripe in chili oil sounded promising, but what arrived was a mushy pile drowned in oil. The chili oil lacked of flavor -- just a greasy, flat-tasting mess. We've gotten takeout a few times but definitely recommend dining in as the noodles and broth are much better eaten piping hot. If you're like me and not a spice person, I recommend getting the broth non spicy. I felt adventurous and asked for the lowest spice level and was still overwhelmed. They were super nice though and brought me over a bowl of non spicy soup to dip my food in to lessen the spice.
