My friend and I each ordered our own small bowls of the classic spicy fish soup with the lotus roots (highly recommend the lotus roots instead of the lettuce-- super nice crunch and flavor). The fish was tender and moist with a really nice flavor from the broth. Broth was delicious and comforting. Each bowl comes with a bowl of rice too. You definitely won't leave hungry. 2/16/2026 Fish With You 156 Castro St Mountain View, CA 94041 I went on a rainy Presidents Day and parking was not a problem in the city structure behind the restaurant. The place has a huge orange fish on the Castro Street sidewalk. The interior is long and narrow with a modernistic table, chair and bench setup. Since there were only two other parties I was seated promptly and ordered the recommended Signature Hot-oil Sauerkraut Fish soup. It came in a large shallow bowl swimming with dried chili peppers and Szechuan peppercorns with a bowl of rice on the side. The soup and contents were super hot and stayed warm until I was finished about 20 minutes later. The soup and fish were noticeably salty and the soup was not that spicy and did not have any vinegary taste. The crunchy pickles were thinly sliced wide planks and did not have much taste. The similarly wide rice noodles were slippery and hard to handle. The fish was mild and a little rubbery, probably to hold together in the soup. This is a brightly lit restaurant that is quite busy and has a giant fiberglass fish sitting out front. Now you'd think that I'd realize that a restaurant with a giant fish out front and with the word "fish" in the title the thing to order here was FISH and not chicken. Well, I ordered the chicken dish. The chicken was tasty but they sure skimped on it. There were only a few very small pieces of chicken in the bowl. For $18 there should have been a lot more chicken present. Maybe they are feeding the chicken to the fish! Also beware of the spiciness of the broth. The menu showed that it was at a level 2 but I requested a level 1. The first thing I did was take a sip of the broth and it was VERY spicy! Thank goodness for the glass of water in front of me. The fish was really tasty of course, but I prefer the basa fish over the snakehead. Overall, I would come back just for this! The Princess Tomato Soup was decent and worth a try, but it's much more thick in consistency compared to the Signature. A really solid non-spicy option, but similar to other Chinese soup spots. I also loved how it included bean sprouts, onions, and celtuce which surprisingly stayed really nice and crisp. The dish looked A LOT spicier than it actually was. I promise that you shouldn't shy away from trying it even if you have a lower spice tolerance. I actually wish that they had made it a lot more spicy. This is the same chain as wei's fish in Cupertino, just with a different name. not sure why, and not sure i love the name. the chinese name is way better (a pun). also, not sure why they call it sauerkraut fish, when i would probably translate it more as pickled greens. anyways, enough with the name, onto the food. i've tried a couple of different dishes both at this location and the cupertino location. my favorite has been and remains the sichuan green peppercorn fish. with either basa or snakehead. basa is a bit more meaty and a tiny bit cheaper, snakehead is more of a silky texture. both are good and work with the soup, depending on the mood. the soup itself has a nice numbing sichuan flavor (ma la), and it includes some actual green peppercorn garnish. i like to munch on them for that extra numbing pop, but they are bitter so might not suite everybody's taste. my second favorite is the lao tan fish (old soup fish), which is very similar with similar options, but the fish is more pickle forward and numbing secondary, whereas the green peppercorn soup is more numbing forward and pickle secondary. whichever soup you pick, you can customize with additional toppings. here's a quick guide for some of the perhaps more confusing items for those who are less familiar with chinese/asian cuisine. yuba - this is tofu skin. there are dozens and dozens of kinds of tofu skin, but this is the very tender kind, which is also one of my favorites. i always add this to my soup. celtuce - this is the stem of lettuce that is sliced into bamboo like strips. has a nice texture that i quite enjoy. last time i ordered, the celtuce was overcooked and mushy, but normally should have a bit of firmness. lotus root - in addition to adding some nice aesthetics to the bowl, they add a nice bit of crunchy texture to a bowl that some might enjoy. wood ears - a kind of mushroom (fungus, actually) eaten primarily for their texture - crunchy and chewy at the same time enoki - a kind of mushroom that grows noodle like - long and thin. eaten in bunches, they have a really nice texture that i love. all the toppings above don't have a lot of taste to themselves, but are great at absorbing the flavors around them, kind of like tofu, which is also what makes them perfect for these types of soup. one other dish of note for me personally: i like the duck blood soup. it satisfies the craving i get for wu gen chang wang (5 stick intestines and blood), a taiwanese dish that is similar. overall a very enjoyable meal that is cheaper and more convenient than going to Tai Er. read more
