Keeping in mind that I have only tried Midori once, I can't help but write that it is one of the best Chinese takeout experiences I have ever had (and there have been quite a few). For being just the two of us, we ended up ordering a lot of food (our eyes are so much bigger than our stomachs), which included vegetable fried rice, a quart of won ton soup, crab Rangoon, Kung Pao chicken, and tangerine chicken. With the exception of the soup, the other dishes were much bigger than expected portions. The soup was fantastic by the way, with very many delicious won tons thrown in for good measure. The crab Rangoon were excellent as were the fried rice and tangerine chicken. The Kung Pao was very good, with lots of big chunks of fresh vegetables and chicken, but it could have been more saucier to suit my taste. Overall the entire order was around $43 and we ended up getting at least 10 meals out of it. The delivery itself was quick. With our order we also received good amounts of sweet and sour sauce, hot mustard, and wonton sticks. If you're craving Chinese (or Japanese sushi) takeout in Gloucester, I definitely encourage you to give this place a try . We couldn't have been more impressed and we are looking forward to ordering from them again. read more

I've been in town for over a year and had yet to try Midori. I stopped in to order takeout, and wasn't disappointed. Sesame chicken, fried rice, beef teriaki, crab rangoons, and hot & sour soup for $15 (including $1 and the change thrown in the tip jar.) 15 minutes total time, from pulling into the parking lot to walking out with a bag of food - not bad at all. Everything tasted fresh and was seasoned pretty well for (basically) fast food. The crab rangoons were the best I've ever had and everything else was very good. So, why only 4 stars? I dunno. I think a meal that deserves 5 stars should make me say "holy shit, you HAVE to eat here!" My meal didn't invoke that response. But, it certainly was tasty, fast, and reasonably priced (and enough food for lunch tomorrow too). read more

We moved from NY 6 years ago and have yet to find GOOD chinese food. We came here after a day at Wingaersheek with the kids and find this place on google. We had very low expectations because all the chinese food we've tried thus far the 6 years we have lived in MA were terrible or just less than what we were used to in NY. The host, Mark, is an absolutely wonderful man, very straightforward and no BS. He has another restaurant in Manhattan, so right away I knew the food was going to be good. The food was so good to the point where I ate so much I nearly puked. I have not seen my kids eat so much food in a while (and they are not picky eaters!) The servings were BIG. Mark personally came and helped with our menus and accommodated to our needs. Wonderful service. He even brought us "honorary" Korean kimchi dishes. He was absolutely wonderful to our kids. We went back today for dinner after a beach day because our kids had begged us, and Mark remembered us right away as soon as we walked through the doors. Before we even ordered anything, he brought out kimchi for us again! We tried sushi today, again accommodated to our needs, and new foods on the menu. Like the week before, the food was amazing and very generous servings. Absolutely delicious. Both times we brought home left-overs. Not only is Mark a very nice man, but everyone was so kind and they sent my kids home with little goody bags! We already told ALL our family and friends about this place. We will be coming back again and again even though it takes 40 minutes to get here! read more

This place is a hidden jewel in trashy Gloucester. You really have to hate food to dislike this place. The crab ran goons are AMAZING and super fresh (the problem with the places around THIS town is freshness!) The atmosphere is friendly and inviting, which helps you forget the 7/11-type store next door and the minimal parking. Stay away.... Scary... I am new to Gloucester and this by far the worst Chinese food I have ever had. If you can see my photos below you will understand why. The chicken wings honest to God have this fluorescent green yellowish color to them. My sesame chicken looked like it was 3 days old with no sesame seeds. The chicken looked like glue...... Decided to come here for lunch & was disappointed with the customer service. Girl at the register acted like it was an inconvenience I was there & while waiting for my food another worker came out & was yelling at children sitting at a bar in her language(not English) & seemed angry & was slamming trays down. Midori has become 1 of our favorite places to eat and we eat there at least once a week. The sushi is fresh and I think the best in the north shore. The chef is very artistic and talented and his sushi plates/designs are never the same. The service is outstanding and friendly. The lunch buffet is outstanding and second to none. The resteraunt is small and most times we are there it is not overly crowded and is very quiet. If your looking for chinese/japanese food then Midori should be your 1st choice. read more

Sigh. What a disappointment. This review is for Chinese takeaway, so I can't speak for the Japanese food offered. Sesame chicken which i'm pretty sure was just General Tso's with the sauce wiped off and then sprinkled with sesame seeds. I love a proper, crispy sesame chicken so this made me a sad girl. Mostly meatless spare ribs and strangely brown yet utterly flavorless pork fried rice. Oh well. read more

For lunch they have a buffet but you can order off the menu as well. There is a lot of variety and it looks pretty good. I went with sushi to order. The seaweed salad is decent, not outstanding. The sushi is exactly like the seaweed salad. If you are used to great sushi this will fall short but it isn't bad and it is probably the best around. The atmosphere is nice and the owner is nice as well. I would try it again but I would go for the buffet next time. read more

I have only gotten sushi delivery, so I can't speak for the Chinese, but it's pretty solid. I have yet to have anything but courteous service over the phone, super fast delivery, and everything has been fresh. I tried to order uni (sea urchin) sashimi last night and they were out, but I can't be upset; I appreciate a sushi place taking the hit for being out of something rather than trying to substitute with something frozen or of lower quality. I especially love that they offer a sashimi roll, which is all fish and no rice, with just a little bit of avocado. Highly recommend. Seaweed salad has great flavor, too, but I just wish the portion was slightly larger. Other than that, this place is my healthy delivery go-to! read more

Lipstick on the water glass, lemons in the water (which is very unsanitary (lemons are the number one fruit to carry fecal matter in restaurants)) the shrimp tempura roll wasn't cooked all the way, the batter was still gooey. Unexpectedly nice inside; would be better if there was a screen to close off the restaurant part from the take-out food part. Food was pretty good; sushi was nothing spectacular, but fresh and more than acceptable... Too much avocado in relation to the amount of fish, IMHO. Shrimp Tempura was good, not greasy. Meat wise, they have great dishes- I'm particularly fond of their White Tuna Tataki and Mini Sumo- but vegetarian wise- their veggie dishes suck. I've tried a few of their veggies dishes (several sashimi, and pad thai), and they all genuinely suck. Midori, please improve your veggie dishes. I tried this restaurant for the first time the other day and I am definitely looking forward to going back. I loved all the options they had, especially vegetarian, and enjoyed the veggie fried rice, although my boyfriend thought it was a little over burnt. They offer good food but terrible customer service. Twice I did not get what I ordered. You would think that if a customer calls with a complaint that the manager would be understanding and accommodate but at this place that did not happen. I was blamed for the mistake and he was not willing to remake my order as I initially ordered even though I was willing to bring back the uneaten incorrectly made food. The manager has a very intimidating personality and I will no longer take my business there. Good luck to those that have to encounter the manager over the phone or in person. read more

Midori is a pretty average chinese food place overall. It's biggest draw is that it is the only one in town that features a buffet. But expect to get there early if you want the high quality food. Plus not having it on the weekends is a real draw back to me. I'm far more likely to get chinese food on the weekends... then again that might be the reason... forcing me to get a meal rather than buffet items. The food and prices are somewhat average but manages to have a wonderful selection of chinese and japanese food to choose from. Again, some items are better than others. The tempura shrimp in particular is wonderful. Also this seems to be the only place in the city to purchase Ramune(japanese soda.. and call it as such here if you order it) which to me is a bonus as I enjoy international beverages. Staff is friendly and there is always room for everyone to sit down and enjoy a meal in peace. Check it out if you're looking for a different experience in your chinese food dining. read more

I've enjoyed Midori's luncheon buffet for years. The food is good and the price incredibly reasonable. Just recently we've been ordering their take-out, particularly the combination platters. They give you a ton of food! And it's good, too. Very reasonable and a fun place to eat. read more

I'm old enough to remember when Gloucester was a one horse town when it came to Chinese food. Late party night Chinese was always a must have. After tasting the quality, fresh and tasty food at Midori, I no longer need to be under the influence to enjoy Chinese cuisine. The beef with mushrooms is amazing...tender, melt in your mouth slices of beef and FRESH mushrooms, as opposed to overcooked canned version. The chicken fingers have a nice, light batter that isn't soaked in grease. Every dish I have tried is so vibrant and fresh beyond comparison. Great food for a reasonable price. Can't wait to work my way through the Chinese menu and get to the Japanese menu! read more

We have now had four dinners at Midori - the exterior in a mini- strip is uninspiring and that's a shame because the food is VERY good in our experience - we've really enjoyed their crispy tofu, the sashimi, the beef with sesame and more - in fact no dish we've ordered so far has been disappointing.
