Unfortunately The May Flower was hit by Bidenomics. The quality of the food kept on going down both on the Chinese and Japanese sides. Rotten vegetables, old sushi rice, old fish, to name a few. We liked ordering from here but I think we may have to bow down and save our guts and wallets. read more

You will need a reservation on Tuesday nights, when musical impresario and trumpeter Tom Palance leads the fabulous jazz combo. North Shore legend Dave Sag lays down the bass line, with Roomful of Blues alum Mark Earley adding a great tenor sax. The Chinese food is pretty good, too. read more

I needed a break from seafood, burgers and pizza and after considerable back and forth I decided to give the Mayflower a shot despite the occasional very terrible review. I am very glad that I did. It had been a while since I lived in Ipswich and so it's been a while since I tried visited the mayflower. As I walked in it was very pleased to see furniture sparkly and despite the fact that appears very dark from the outside it was light and crisp and clean on the inside. Lucy a beautiful bartender and server was attendant to my seating in menu selection very promptly. She appeared at my table regularly during my meal and made sure that my glass was full And always asked if I needed anything. She refilled my glass promptly, And brought me hot mustard properly. The service was beyond excellent. The soup was flavorful and very fresh. I ordered a combination plate, a luncheon special and it was excellent rice was perfectly cooked with fresh scrambled eggs and fresh vegetables mixed in with pork That was not dried out. The chicken wings were very crispy on the outside and tender on the inside and very flavorful. The crab Rangoon's were very crispy on the outside and very creamy on the inside. I'm not sure what the problem is. I found the staff pleasant, attentive, swift and highly competent. The food was excellent and very fresh. read more

I will start off by saying that I'm a creature of habit. I like what I like and very rarely do I stray. That being said, the local joint I go to was closed. So through friends, this was recommended. Drove about 30 minutes to get here. Wasn't busy. Waitress was great, attentive, no issues there. The menu is a take out menu, which alot of places do, that's fine. Was just tiny. Got some things I get fairly often at other places, we all have our favorites! Tried moo shu, i think thats the name. Never had it before anywhere was really good, comes qith wraps. The pad thai was always really good, peanut sauce was thin which isn't always bad. The hot and sour soup was very tasty. Got 2 pieces of Ebi (cooked shrimp over rice) also spicy edamame and beef teriyaki. I'm a big beef teriyaki fan, this wasn't my favorite but not the worst either. Also sea weed salad. Mai tai drinks come in pint glasses which is a nice change from a short glass. Hot saki was standard, but good non the less. I would recommend it for sure. One thing to note, I dont know if the sign was broken and not lit, or if it is ever lit up. Wouldn't know it was there. Overall, give it a whirl. I'll be back for sure. read more

Note: Review based just on pupu platter but it was god awful. I can't believe any of this food originates fresh in the kitchen, more like it's trucked up here just like the fortune cookie still wrapped in its Brooklyn addressed wrapper offered at end of this stale, tasteless meal. Egg rolls awful, greasy, thickly wrapped with stale cabbage the only thing I could see inside. Fried chicken tenders and shrimp tasteless and the fried part thick like fried dough at an amusement park. Same with veggie tempura, small portion and it's really stretching it to call it tempura. Chicken wings probably originated at a Market Basket. This food no way restaurant quality. read more

Went for sushi, and the plate was not worth the price paid. My plate had maki rolls, and where the fish is where they cut it, the amount of tuna/salmon looked like a period at the end of this sentence. Seems like they cater to heavy drinkers and gambling degenerates that venture no father than a Poo Poo platter to eat. read more

Spent $40 on horrible, horrible food. The sushi was clearly not fresh, the overpriced sweet and sour shrimp was just hilarious. $15 for almost nonexistent shrimp in HUGE balls of deep friend dough with a cheap sauce on the side. The cherry on top was there were a few staples in my food!! I called the restaurant and explained the situation the nicest way possible. The woman on the line was extremely rude, unapologetic and basically called me a liar. After numerous times of spending money supporting a local business..this is how you thank us? What a shame. This is our go to for take out in the area. However, perhaps no more. Today I picked up a lunch combo, one I picked up many time before. It did not look or taste anything like what I had before from this same restaurant. I ordered sesame chicken and I what I got was a watery orange chicken with a few sesame seeds sprinkled on it. For them to think a consumer wouldn't know the difference is very arrogant and disappointing. You know I have noticed minor inconsistencies before. I wanted to stop for some sushi before work, and decided to go here since it was (somewhat) close to where I work. The building is in keeping with the architecture of downtown Ipswitch. The posters for beer and football on the front indicated more of a bar atmosphere, and the bar is half the restaurant. There was already a large gathering of people in the bar section when I stopped in at 3:30, seems to be a popular place! After being seated an inquiry was made for the sushi of the day. Amazing Tuna, spicy yellow tail wrapped and then tuna on top with avocado. I opted for the special and Unagi (I love eel) with some crab rangoon and tea. Tea came out first, a whole pot to me-little onesome. It was a charming porcelain teapot. I wasn't expecting so many crab rangoon for the appetizer. I'm used to places giving 6-8 pieces. There were at least a dozen. Fried just right and the filling well balanced in flavor (some places the cream cheese isn't balanced out, and I get sick after 2 or 3 if the cream cheese flavor is too strong), I killed most of the plate. I had to save room for the sushi now! Beautiful presentation for the sushi. There was this white sauce drizzled on the Amazing Tuna, and I'm not sure if it was panko but there was some crust dusted on top the tuna. The sushi of the day was excellent. The Unagi Nigiri had nice big pieces of eel, that was really good also. I left the restaurant quite happy and satiated. Crab rangoon were boxed up, and I had them when I got home from work. I went to the May Flower and really liked it. First off, don't be intimidated by the appearance. It may look a little bit run down and dingy, but when you go inside, it is clean and modern. The food was fresh and tasty. They had french fries for an appetizer (which I found a little bit surprising), but they were still excellent. Great restaurant. Note: this is about the service, not the food... Ordered pickup and was not told how long so I had to call to find out when it was available for pickup. At that point the food was ready and cold. I walked to pick it up and they put 3 items in 3 different bags so I asked for a larger bag and the male bartender begrudgingly went to the kitchen to get me a bag and then handed it to me to put my own items in the bag. Customer service is well below my expectations and I'm very disappointed in how they treated me AFTER I gave them a generous tip. read more

This is really good Chinese! Light, fresh and tasty. Full of spices and fresh meats (not that gross chewey, fatty, kind that makes you want to spit it out on your plate) this place was a pleasant surprise. I am a firm believer it is hard to find a good Chinese place that values quality but I think these guys do and it shows. The inside is nicely decorated not that tacky red plastic you expect to find but a nice upscale feel; separate dining and bar areas, big screen TV and really good food. This is one of those "Diamond In The Rough" Restaurants. Not that Ipswich is 'in the rough' but the exterior of the building is unassuming, nothing really makes you drive by and NEED to check it out. I have been dining here since they opened. The sushi is fresh, very very fresh. Which, in my opinion, is the most important part of Sushi. You see familiar faces when at May Flower, which I believe is important. They serve Chinese & Japanese. Both are exceptional. Truly. Some of the best crab rangoons you will ever eat. They offer a "Crispy Chicken" with a variety of sauces... so, you General Gau, Tso, Chow fans, don't you worry. This is some of the best tasting, crispy chicken you will ever eat! There are something like 6 or 7 different sauces you can combine with the chicken. Sushi: This is where may Flower ears the 5 stars. I have been eating sushi for almost 25 years & may Flower continually makes some of the best, FRESHEST, sushi you will ever eat. Having grown up in an adjacent North shore town, I was reluctant to try a new Asian restaurant that solicited business by way of U.S. mail. I ended up taking a risk, and was handsomely rewarded. This chic, small Asian bistro produced an impressive wine and beer list, in conjunction with its' comprehensive menu of both Chinese and Japanese fare. Presentation was top notch, and the Hot & Sour soup and the Vegetable Maki I ordered were terrific. Decided to try something new based upon the reviews, what a mistake. The other reviews must have been written be the bar crowd who stand outside all the time and smoke and then go back in a play Keni. It really deserves no stars except the the spicy crab was the only good dish. To start with this place is mostly a bar with very loud and foul mouthed patrons. The waitress was nice but she hovered over use while we made up our minds. The sushi was mostly a miss. Spicy tuna mostly mayo. Spicy crab tasty but the rice tasted very old and dry. Other rolls had the same problem. The worst dish was the chicken and string beans which left my partner sick the rest of the evening because of how greasy it was. Never again. read more

I use this restaurant as my go to place when I'm in need of a quick meal after work or to pick up when I find myself suddenly entertaining unexpected guests. The quality is as to be expected with this fare. Mayflower is very consistent with food quality and priced what I consider very fairly. I almost didn't write this review because I am going to merely reiterate what everyone is saying. THE BEST SUSHI and what a diverse menu of it! The fried crab sushi, the grilled Hamachi tuna (yes, I know not technically sushi) and the maki rolls are superb. I'm like a kid in a candy store. My son and I go there and we sit at the small portion of the bar right in front of the sushi station. I guess this review is somewhat incomplete because I really haven't tried the staples like the pu pu platter, appetizers and the routine Chinese fare but I can't get away from the Sushi! my friends and I went to may flower for the all-you-can eat sushi (and appetizer) dinner, and this is a pretty fantastic deal. it was $25 on a Saturday night, but I believe as cheap as $15 for lunches or some weeknights. the all-you-can-eat menu includes made to order sushi rolls and sashimi, as well as all of the regular appetizers such as soups, salads, and some lo meins. one thing that I really liked was that the sushi rolls were on the smaller size and each had only 4 pieces, so it made it easier for me to select 2 rolls that I wanted, knowing that I could eat that much. I chose the snow white roll and the dragon roll, and both were very good although they were a little heavy with some of the tempura. I also got about 5 pieces of sashimi, including tuna, salmon, and 3 new fishes that I hadn't tried before. it was all pretty fresh and delicious. I love wasabi, but theirs is extremely strong so just a word of caution on this! along the way, I also had a miso soup, seaweed salad, house salad, crab rangoon, edamame, and ice cream (we were all running a half marathon the next day so we had to fuel up). the miso soup was a bit cloudy, but I appreciated how much tofu and seaweed there was. I liked that the dressing on the house salad was light in weight but bright in flavor, and the seaweed salad was delicious. the crab rangoon were crispy and creamy, and actually had a lot of filling. my husband got the shrimp lo mein and I assume he liked it because he ate the whole thing. for dessert, we got the strawberry, green tea, and vanilla ice creams. all had a lot of flavor, and I think we were each pleased with our own chosen flavor. read more

Fried rice very flavorful and the Orange Chicken was tasty. The inside of the restaurant looked inviting if you ignore the 'regulars' at the bar- they seemed a bit dodgy! An absolute Hidden Jewel! I have both eaten in the restaurant and had take-out and am shocked that I never knew about May Flower until now. The sushi is fresh, the Miso soup and salad are flavorful, and tonight I had the best Orange Chicken I have ever had. The service is friendly, the kitchen is fast, the food is fresh and hot, and the restaurant is immaculate. I've got to agree with the other yelpers. This is as good as it gets for Chinese food on the north shore. I've been going here since they opened with my kids and they love it too. I've never had a bad meal yet. Great hot and sour soup which is one of my tests of a place. Also they give you a lot of food for each portion. Their lunch deal is awesome.
