I was visiting my mother and she was craving Chinese so I had fond memories living close to Ocean Garden years ago and wanted to see how they were these days. I used to walk there and order and wait but we went with delivery. The menu online doesn't match up at all with their paper menu which we discovered as we tried to place our order with a woman who had no idea what we wanted based on the online menu numbers. Not sure why there was a discrepancy but it made ordering much harder than it needed to be. We also requested contact less delivery and gave credit card details over the phone and left a tip outside on a bench, however, they totally ignored that and knocked at the door and wouldn't leave the food on the bench which is not ideal when we're trying to social distance because my mother has a medical condition. I had thought the bill was way higher than it should have been based on the online menu's prices and we quickly realized they gave us 3 meals instead of the two we wanted. This worked out for me as my mother wanted chicken chow mein and also sweet and sour chicken so I ordered that as my meal but I'm not a fan. I was just on board for the egg roll and fried rice anyway. Our extra meal consisted of a tub of chicken fingers, a beef teriyaki piece and the pork plus extra rice and crab rangoon. More than enough food. The food was just okay. It was fresh and hot which is nice but I've had better. It was very salty. Usually, I like Chinese better as left overs the next day but this wasn't great the next day. My mother enjoyed her chicken chow mein and had the left over sweet and sour chicken so her wishes were meant. For the price and hassle though, it wasn't worth it. I'd likely try delivery from somewhere else and leave this as an order at the counter type adventure. read more

I don't know how they haven't been shut down already with the number of health code violations and amount of customers who continue to get food poisoning from cross contamination. They leave raw uncooked meat on knives that they will use for everything without cleaning, they'll be seen preparing food on the customer table and often have children helping. read more

Drove from WI to MA for a wedding. Got in to Gloucester late on a Fri night. Ordered combo to go as we arrived. Boneless ribs, chicken fingers, egg roll, and beef on a stick. The food was ready in 10 minutes and she offered us an add on of pork fried rice for an extra $3. It was all so delicious, especially the pork fried rice. If I'm ever back in Gloucester, wouldn't hesitate to quench my hunger with Ocean Garden. read more

This Chinese is one of the best on my toop foods my favorites are chicken lomaine and pork fried rice it is delicioso we just had there food 2 niights in a row now so its beggining to be a routine i think this might be the best Chinese food i have ever had and they always nail the flavors even in this pandemic outbreak!! The texture is perfect too the teriaki sticks dont feel like rubber witch in my opinion its great and thats really it i would definitly recomend it to people who dont know a lot about glouscters food places!! I know it might be a little bit more american food but its not some fancy restraunt that only rich can go to think of it as Mcdonalds its not fancy but there food is delicious so basically what im trying to say s there food is amazing to me! read more

I walked here to get take-out for the first time this past weekend. I wanted to get cold sesame noodles for a picnic I was making and figured I would give it a try. I am new to the neighborhood and this is a little hole in the wall family run place. Sesame noodles weren't on the menu, but they made them for me anyway and they were great! The little daughter of the owner came out from behind the counter and visited with me while I waited and made the 10 minute wait go by quickly. This place has pretty good food. They're really fast with delivery, too. I have never been in the restaurant, so I can't attest to the service, but the guy who answers the phone is really nice. I got the crab rangoon and pineapple shrimp one time and sesame chicken and soup another time. It wasn't anything very special. Every thing has definitely been pre-fried. Always found the small hole in the wall businesses often are the best, Ocean Garden is no different. The flashy places often miss the mark and you want to split and go elsewhere. I've been getting their food for years and without a doubt they do have probably the best general tso chicken. Not only that but for the prices and serving size you can't go wrong.. Especially compared to the other places in Gloucester for Chinese which are in my experience thus far terrible (maybe I've just ordered the wrong items?) Also they do have a website and they will accept credit cards over the phone apparently.. Which is weird but I won't lie it has come in handy in the past. read more

seriously order the french fries. i swear you will be hooked. i've always preferred ocean garden to all the other gloucester chinese food restaurants. for awhile, this was the only place you could get singapore-style rice noodles. their noodles are and continue to be the best in gloucester (now that they have competition). they are spicy and awesome, although pretty oily once you get to the bottom of the container. i don't know how you'd avoid that, though. i mentioned the french fries. are you like me and laugh every time you see french fries on a chinese food menu? my amusement is why i ordered them, and i seriously think they are the best french fries i've ever eaten. they look like mcdonald's fries but taste like a dream come true. i'm sure it's because they're fried in the same vat as the chicken fingers and all the other fatty bits. i wish i could explain their deliciousness. i had them once at my mom's house and my little sister, who had eaten dinner already, ate half the box. haha. i'd say everything is a bit better here than other places around gloucester. plus, the owners are SO NICE. as far as i can tell, it's all family-run. they're always so kind and friendly and i walk out of there with a smile. also, we were douche bags and ordered delivery during a snowstorm and they came with a smile, and quite speedily, too. definitely make ocean garden your number one choice for chinese/asian food in gloucester. read more

I love this place. They're super friendly, the rice is excellent (it's actually got egg/sprouts/peas/onion in it - you know, the way it SHOULD BE!). Is it super gourmet? No, but it's also not the neon scary Chinese food that you get at Dragon Light at the rotary (and oh my God, don't get me started on THEIR rice... blech). HORRIBLE HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. I have been ordering from Ocean Garden for years. Starting in January, they forgot part of my order. When I called them, they refused to deliver the rest of my order and said "you get it free next time". I asked how I do that and they said that I just had to tell them when I ordered next. In February, I put an order in, but I ordered it online so I couldn't get my free food. But that's ok, I figured I'd get it the next time I called an order in. This time (from the online ordering) they made the wrong type of lo mein, but I didn't call, we just ate it (even though it wasn't what we ordered!) Fast forward to tonight. I called my order in. First I asked for my free lo mein. Lady on the phone said "Oh Sorry, owner isn't here, can't have free order" I was annoyed but told her okay, I'd order it when the owner was in and proceeded with my order. It was a smaller order and I asked her to please be certain they triple check the order because my last two orders were wrong. Sure enough, we got the order and they are missing the side of egg roll that comes with one of the two items I ordered. So, I called up the restaurant and told her that she again got my order wrong and I would like the item delivered to me right away. She told me "sorry we too busy". I then told her I didn't care how busy they are, I paid for my order, I should have received the full order. She said "ok, we deliver later" 30 minutes later, still no order, so I call back. This time she hands the phone to the owner. He says "we too busy, I give you free order next time" At this point I was beginning to suspect that they try and pull this will other customers since this is the second time they refused to deliver a full order. I argued with him that that was not acceptable, letting him know that he told me that back in January and then they do not follow through. He then told me that I was lying because they have been in business for 14-15 years and they never had anyone say that they didn't deliver food, just me. I told him I didn't care how long he's been in business, but if he takes money for an order, he needs to deliver the FULL order. Then he tries to tell me he would put it on my account. WHAT ACCOUNT? I don't have an account with them. Then he says my credit card. I didn't pay with a credit card! When I said "Listen, normally this wouldn't be a big issue, but I asked the lady to triple check before sending out the order since you made mistakes on my last two orders. So I expect you to deliver the full order" He then got even more rude and said "Next time you call different restaurant. We no want you to order from us again. You always say nothing is delivered" I was appalled. I do NOT always say that. I said it once before when they admitted that they cancelled part of the online order by mistake but then said that I would get it free next time (which, as above, they did not honor) and the second time they screwed up, I didn't even call to let them know. And this was the third time, and yes I will tell you if you don't deliver my full order because I don't like paying for things that I don't get! Anyway, they do not have to worry. I WILL ALWAYS CALL A DIFFERENT RESTAURANT...I WILL NEVER CALL OR ORDER FROM THIS PLACE EVER AGAIN. Unbelievable! read more

Really bummed because I liked this place until today - had to spit out my food and found a strand of metal about 4 inches long looks to be from a metal scouring pad that was in my wonton soup - really gross. I have been a patron of this restaurant since I moved to Gloucester in 2000 and I have never had a less than delicous meal, for a great price and in huge portions. The owners, Lilly and Bin, work side by side with their employees and are super dedicated to their business. The food is so fresh, service excellent. I really cannot say enough good things about it. The only downside is that the restaurant is take-out only because they have not been able to yet buy a bigger place. I would strongly recommend that someone with some money to invest, go into partnership with them to expand the business to one that has dine-in as well. By far the best Chinese restaurant in Cape Ann, even better than the famous Fortune Palace in Essex. read more

DO NOT ORDER FROM THIS PLACE!!! Worst customer service I have ever experienced. I ordered delivery and had a special instruction on an item that they apparently did not read. I called them and asked if they could send me the correct order and I was told that because they pay for delivery that they couldn't do this. I PAYED FOR THE DELIVERY FEE IN MY ORDER! I was told I couldn't even get it refunded to me until I brought the rice back in to the restaurant myself.
