Most of the inks cost the same as they would online but you don't have to pay shipping and you can view the swatches to get a good idea of the color you're buying. With that said, try your best to find some street parking, which is hopefully cheaper. Anyway, great store and I'd definitely recommend!

Both Elaine & her husband Hiroshi will be more than happy to help you find what you're needing. Having both lived in Japan for many years, they are very particular in what they sell. Both of them select each style of Japanese washi paper for its individual characteristics - beauty, variety and versatility. Most of their stock comes from Japan, where ancient traditions still reign. Their stamp images focus primarily on Japanese culture, both classical and contemporary. They import special stencils from Japan which use persimmon juice died Kaki Shibu paper. They also offer many kinds of rice paper and brushes, most of which have been developed primarily for various styles of brush calligraphy and for Sumi-e, an ancient style of Oriental painting renowned for its simplicity, grace and beauty. If you're into Ikebana (the art of Japanese flower arranging), make sure to inquire about the Ichiyo School of Ikebana, taught by Executive Master, Elaine Jo. I've been taking lessons from Elaine for almost two years now, and I've learned so much from her teachings. You couldn't have a better instructor to learn this sculptural artform. Her talent constantly inspires me each week I learn something new.

I even got some help on my project. It was so nice to be community with people who love the fiber arts for a little while. I look forward to supporting their business since they also ship!

I recently had a private knitting lesson here…read more The instructor begin with telling me the different types of forms yarn comes in, ie. hanks, skeins and balls along with other information about knitting. After the introduction the instructor picked out a wood circular knitting needle for me. The reason for choosing the wood I was told it would help hold the yarn better for a beginner versus a metal needle. When it came time to choose the yarn I was told to make my choice from a small area. I picked a mustard yarn. The next day I received an invoice from the store because I didn't pay for the items. Silly me. I assumed because I was only allowed to pick out from a certain section that it was included with the lesson that I had paid for. Unfortunately, because the yarn I chose was quite small. It has been difficult as a beginner working with it. There have been a lot of starts and stops which I would expect but more so because of the size of the yarn. I have since learned as a beginner I should have a bulkier yarn. When I left that day, I had not gotten the hang of the cast on, or the knit stitch. Five minutes before the class was to end we had just finished casting on and that didn't leave much time for the knitting since the store was opening. Since taking the class I have been able to get the hang of the cast on and the knit stitch thanks to Sheep and Stitch on YouTube. I think the reason I didn't get the hang of it in the store was because of the teaching style. It just didn't mesh with my learning style. I would definitely recommend the classes to anyone here. Very professional staff. Because the yarn I ended up purchasing isn't good for beginners. I did call the store to see if I could exchange it, but I was told they would not accept it because it had already been wound. The staff was very nice. They were very helpful when customers came in.
