Kudos to places who provide space for people to come together to do things they love like work on fiber arts! I was visiting ATL for the weekend and wanted to visit some yarn stores so the Craftivist came up in my research. I saw that they host events for people to come in and work on their fiber arts a few times a week so this sold me on visiting! When I stopped in, I was greeted and there was space for me to sit down. I even got some help on my project. It was so nice to be community with people who love the fiber arts for a little while. I look forward to supporting their business since they also ship! read more

I recently had a private knitting lesson here. The instructor begin with telling me the different types of forms yarn comes in, ie. hanks, skeins and balls along with other information about knitting. After the introduction the instructor picked out a wood circular knitting needle for me. The reason for choosing the wood I was told it would help hold the yarn better for a beginner versus a metal needle. When it came time to choose the yarn I was told to make my choice from a small area. I picked a mustard yarn. The next day I received an invoice from the store because I didn't pay for the items. Silly me. I assumed because I was only allowed to pick out from a certain section that it was included with the lesson that I had paid for. Unfortunately, because the yarn I chose was quite small. It has been difficult as a beginner working with it. There have been a lot of starts and stops which I would expect but more so because of the size of the yarn. I have since learned as a beginner I should have a bulkier yarn. When I left that day, I had not gotten the hang of the cast on, or the knit stitch. Five minutes before the class was to end we had just finished casting on and that didn't leave much time for the knitting since the store was opening. Since taking the class I have been able to get the hang of the cast on and the knit stitch thanks to Sheep and Stitch on YouTube. I think the reason I didn't get the hang of it in the store was because of the teaching style. It just didn't mesh with my learning style. I would definitely recommend the classes to anyone here. Very professional staff. Because the yarn I ended up purchasing isn't good for beginners. I did call the store to see if I could exchange it, but I was told they would not accept it because it had already been wound. The staff was very nice. I love this store! I wanted to find an intro knitting class and it was the perfect place. Kathy was a patient and kind teacher to us beginners. They have lots of classes available and "open table" time. And the store is beautiful and full of quality yarns and tools. This will be my knitting and craft place from now on!! The Craftivist is a local yarn store (LYS) located a brief stroll from Krog Street Market. It's next door to Revolution Doughnuts, with the Kadampa Meditation Center on the other side. Free street parking is available along Edgewood Avenue. I am all for online ordering, but there's nothing like going to an actual store to look at what you're buying. With yarn, colors and textures are so critical, and we all know how computer monitors and digital photographs can unintentionally misrepresent shades and hues. The Craftivist seems to perhaps sell fewer yarns than this other LYS I occasionally frequent. But it's less cluttered and ancient-feeling and much brighter and modern. I blissed out touching and admiring all the gorgeous dazzling and soft yarns. And in case you're wondering, the prices seemed comparable to what you'd order online. Though it was tempting to buy up the whole store, I bought some yarn in hanks, and the woman working kindly offered to wind them into balls free of charge. Excellent. And also excellent, The Craftivist hosts numerous crafting hours and knitting classes that sound cool. Regarding the name The Craftivist (from the website): "We are inspired by craftivism, a term coined by Betsy Greer in 2002, connecting the terms craft and activism. Love, love, love this shop. Browsing the colorful shelves brings me such joy. This shop is clearly a labor of love, with a beautifully curated product selection. Vincent has helped a number of times with my purchases at Craftivist. He was extremely patient and kind with a toilsome winding task on some yarn he helped me select. My favorite LYS ITP! Jennifer and everyone else on staff are incredibly warm and helpful. They have knitting circles (knit togethers) 4x/week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. I've also taken one of the classes offered (Intro to Brioche). There are usually 2-4 types of classes offered per month. The shop is always well stocked with yarn and I love that they feature local makers' wares as well as more mainstream brands. My one teensy complaint is that sometimes the needles I need are not in stock, but that's usually not a huge deal and I'm there for the squishy and unique yarn anyways. Cute store but not easy for a novice to shop in. There were no beginner books or patterns and was told the book the did have was not for beginners. It took about 1.5 hours to leave with yarn and a hook but this place seems great for people who aren't novices and know what they want, I'm definitely going to give it another chance read more

This is what's been missing! Since Knitch left a niche in my heart and intown Atlanta, I've been longing for a great local yarn store intown. This fits the bill and gets bonus points for being walking distance from my house! The space is really nice and well-appointed. The yarn selection ranges from Cascade 220 to Malabrigo and Madelinetosh, with some additional brands I wasn't previously familiar with. There were a few batts of Malabrigo roving as well. They also carry some fun embroidery kits that were not easy to pass up. There is a table in the back and their Facebook page has hours for folks to sit & knit throughout the week. I couldn't be more stoked to welcome this little shop to the neighborhood. I'm hoping that their fantastic location (directly next to Revolution Donuts in Inman Park, so near the Beltline, Krog Street Market, and walking distance to MARTA) will mean they'll be around for a good long while. read more

After Christmas my sister and I stopped by this store to get everything I'd need to start knitting. As a brand new knitter, I was afraid I'd be overwhelmed. Not so with the awesome help from the peeps at Craftivist! They helped us select a good yarn and needles, and I was on my way (my sister was teaching me). Unfortunately we chose a pattern that was simple but ended up frustrating me. I found a simpler pattern and ventured back to this lovely store on my own for yarn. I admit I was super nervous. But Vincent was amazing. I showed him the pattern, he showed me appropriate yarn weights, helped me get right sized needles, chatted with me about life, and explained what and why about the process of winding the yarn. He even explained how this particular yarn was dyed. He totally made me comfortable. His awesomeness doesn't stop there. I got started on the new project and made great progress. And then I dropped a stitch and something else happened when I tried to figure that out, and very soon I had a big ole mess. I stopped by the store today to ask for help, and Vincent was there. He made me feel welcome, invited me to sit at the table, and took a look at my mess. He patiently explained what was wrong and how he was fixing it. It took him no time to straighten it out, and now I feel more educated on how to fix things myself the next time I create a mess. He took things one step further and asked me to show him how I was purling so he could see if I was doing something wrong. I was pretty sure my problem was lack of tension in the yarn; I appreciate him double checking to help me avoid more messes. Thank you Vincent! read more

Like one of the other reviewers, I was sad when the Knitch went out of business. An LYS is a really big part of my happiness, and such an amazing way to find a community of people. The Craftivist is all that and then some more. I love their yarn selections. They have some of the standards, and what amazing standards they are (Cascade, Malabrigo, Madelinetosh) and then some ones that I don't see as often, the popular now Hedgehog, Spud and Chloe. Wow. Then there's the support of other local enterprises. Republica Unicornia for example is a local yarn producer, and her skeins and project bags are also available through the Craftivist, which is awesome... local businesses empowering others. Finally there's their spirit of activism and community. Whether it's Welcome Blankets or Hats, I appreciate that they want to work on projects that are meaningful commitments to others who have less. I know it's a privilege to be able to afford yarn, and I am happy to spend the time turning it into something that I hope will make a difference in someone else's life. The Craftivist allows me to do that, and so much more. If you've made it this far, and you wish you could knit or crochet, they've got that covered too. Lots of classes, and a perfect environment for learning. I've been in the store crocheting during one of their classes and i can say that it's hands on and interactive and exactly the right balance of learning and chatting. I love having a LYS that is so close to home (well, a few miles away, but that's pretty close in Atlanta). I'm new to knitting and they've been great to both me and my partner. They're incredibly helpful and are especially savvy in picking out yarn. Their selection is increasing and they are supposed to carry Hedgehog Fibers soon, so I'm really looking forward to that! I'm not sure that I'd love knitting as much as I do now without having the Craftivist nearby. read more

I've visited twice and the owner and staff are exceedingly friendly and helpful. The selection is well chosen and has a nice price range from middle of the road and good quality, to high end luxury fibers. It can truly be wonderful to walk in and feel everything and fall in love with a new yarn, in a way that is impossible to do online. The store is spacious and has plenty of natural light, which is very nice when picking colors. As a nice bonus, it's a short walk from Krog Street Market and next door to Revolution Coffee and Doughnuts! This is my go-to shop from now on. read more

I am taking a class here next week, and in advance of the class I went in today to pick up my supplies. I don't know much about yarns, but I do know that the owner, Jennifer, was friendly and welcoming. The yarn types and colors look abundant, and the store is roomy with a big table at the back. Tons of types of needles and other supplies. They have classes and knit togethers. We found a place to park on the street on a Saturday at noon. I'm looking forward to buying and hanging. Went on a day I didnt have a ton of money because if I did I would have spent it. The woman behind the counter offered to ball up the yarn which was very sweet. My son watched an l said "that's what you help me do, but you're free!" Lol ball winders can be pricey. Lots of gift ideas for the crochet/knitting person in your life.
