I dropped in and Deanne was so helpful- showed me a couple new techniques- did not know about barber cords but you should go there and get some for next time you need to slip stitches on scrap yarn or a stitch holder. I've shopped here for 30 years and my grandmother before that. Always had great yarn and tools. I got back into crochet recently and visited the store. Love the new look and curated yarns. Still affordable but a great selection of fibers and ranges. Lots of folks of all ages gathering around the tables working on projects. It's great to see younger folks knitting and crocheting. Nice little shop but less than stellar customer service. I am often in Atlanta but this was my first visit to this shop. I was delighted to see a small but nice range of yarns for every budget and preference - a nice variety of super wash and non-superwash wools, and some acrylics. Wonderful to see several classes taking place in the shop. After purchasing over $100 in yarn (6 skeins) and asking to have two skeins wound into cakes, was shocked when after being told they would, another employee rudely informed us that no that they couldn't wind it then but we could leave it and come back another day to pick it up wound. Having a knitting-related semi-emergency, I blew into Needle Nook about 20 minutes before closing and was able to pick up exactly what I needed. Needle Nook is pretty unassuming. It's nestled between Thai Chili and FooTfittR in the Briar Vista Shopping Center. If you're like me and terrible with the names of all the zillions of shopping centers, it's the one with Red Pepper Taqueria and the freestanding Starbucks, across from Whole Foods. According to their Facebook page, Needle Nook has been around since 1976, so a while. They have a system that signs you up and the yarn you've purchased so in case you forget, they can pull that info up for you. Needle Nook also has classes. I spotted a flyer for a coffee koozie one. A lady offered to help me, and I was glad to see the specific brand of needle I'm familiar with, for a price competitive with online retailers. Good selection overall. I even managed to squeeze in a little browsing time to admire and touch all the soft pretty yarns. read more

I went in this morning and experienced the worst service I've ever had in a yarn store. The employee (who was seated at the knitting table doing her own knitting) said that the yarn needed for my very basic pattern would be hard to find. (I needed a dk yarn for size 8 needles.) She sent me to the back of the store to "bring some yarn to her" so she could see if it worked for my pattern. When I saw the yarn was cheap acrylic, I told her that I would like to try wool instead. She then told me that she didn't think they had any yarn there that would work for me. I continued to look anyway and mentioned adjusting the needle size to use a different yarn. She told that changing the needle size wouldn't help and told me again that they didn't have any yarn I could use. It was like she just didn't want to sell me anything! I left and went to "Yarning for Ewe" instead and received great service and bought some really cute yarn. I'll never go back to Needle Nook even though it's closer to my home. read more

I made my first trip to the Needle Nook during the 2008 Atlanta Shop Hop. I've driven by it several times, but never made it in time before they closed. Their yarn selection left me pleasantly surprised. They pretty much have a bit of everything, upscale fiber, wool, novelty yarn, baby yarn, sock yarn, and even the dreaded acrylic. Some knitters discriminate against the acrylic but not me. I do try not to knit with the super crappy acrylic yarn i.e. Red Heart Super Saver available at most Wal-Marts. But the Needle Nook has a nice selection of softer, better quality acrylics. Which are always nice to make baby blankets out of. Some people say not to make baby blankets out of acrylic, even though it's one of the few machine washable yarns, because the yarn will melt on a baby if the house ever caught on fire. Well the baby will probably die from smoke inhalation before the blanket turns into a gooey plastic-y mess. read more

Overall, there's a good selection of yarn with customer service that's good or bad based on who's working. They do have a good selection of different yarns here. When I visit a yarn store, I usually drift around the store looking at most of the yarn available and picking up and feeing anything that looks fun to work with. I'll usually load up on multiple skeins of different yarns all at once and not need yarn again for months. Because of that, I rarely need much assistance in a store because I'm not looking for anything specific. This store isn't huge, but they have enough products to spend a half hour or so perusing slowly. There is a range of quality at different price points, but I think things are fairly priced. As for service, it's a mixed bag. The first time I went in, I hadn't read any reviews so had no expectations. The younger (a relative term for the typical yarn store customer/employee) woman who was there greeted me as soon as I came in and then let me browse without being intrusive or rude. When I was ready to check out, she was asking questions about my project and introduced me to Ravelry (seems unbelievable, butI had been knitting for about 2 years and somehow had never heard of it before). She took 10 minutes or so and showed me the site and how she uses it. It was amazing customer service. The next time I went in, a different employee was there and she watched me the whole time i shopped in a way that made me feel like she suspected me of stealing. When I asked her questions about some yarn, she spoke to me like I couldn't possibly understand it all. As a male knitter in my early 30s, I'm used to people assuming I'm shopping for someone else or almost treating me like I must be lost. This went beyond that. When I checked out she acted as though I was imposing on her because she had to put down the piece she was working to ring me up. I usually give 2-3 stars if a place has bad service, but the friendly assistance I received the first time I went means I'll still cautiously give 4 stars. If you live or work near here and know your way around fibers, tools, etc. and don't need much assistance in a yarn store then stop on in and hope for the best when it's time to check out. If you're a newer knitter who may have more questions or need help and recommendations you might find that here, but don't get discouraged if you don't. There are other yarn stores around Atlanta that you should visit who will provide you a better experience. read more

I was hesitant to try this store because of some of the reviews about bad customer service. I decided to try then because they are conveniently located. I'm so glad I did! Margie was a great help thinking through a project and finding the yarn that would work best. I was planning to make several items, but she suggested I buy enough yarn for one and come back if I wanted to continue with others. I appreciated her not just trying to sell as much as possible. As others have noted, it is a little hard to get oriented and understand how the yarns are arranged. If the salespeople are busy with other customers, it's hard to self-serve. On the other hand, they have a wide range of yarns and price points and are less expensive than the other small yarn shops in town. I enjoy knitting with nicer yarn than that available at the "big box" stores. If you haven't been in for a while, they are worth another try! read more

To begin, I am a novice in knitting/crochet, and I wonder if this has something to do with my experience. Regardless... As other reviewers have mentioned, walking in here is sort of like a Ross for yarn; you really have to dig. Nothing is clearly labeled (they do have small squares of paper, but these are often hidden by clothes that may or may not be for sale), and while much of their yarn does seem to corral in certain locations (i.e. Much of the wool is in the same area) there are no identifiable sections for different weights or materials. Again, I am a beginner so perhaps this is more frustrating for someone new to this, but I can't help but feel even long time knitters would want some clarity and organization to this mess. As far as prices: yarn seems average to above average (compared to Michaels or Joanne's), tools seem to be below average which is nice. They were having a 1/2 off sale going on, but most items were bulked together and were not to be broken up for sale, which sort of defeated the purpose of the sale in my opinion. Lastly, based on other reviews, service is clearly an issue here. There was an older woman attending the shop today and, like others have said, was very attentive and polite to one other woman who was there knitting. However, instead of ignoring me completely, I felt as though I was being followed like a shoplifter. She almost demanded she help me find something. However, when I actually did have a question, I was met with a "what-do-you-want" attitude. In short, as much as I want to support small businesses, I'd rather go to a commercial chain until I can find a different yarn shop in the city. The prices aren't cheap enough to justify the hassle of finding products and sitting through the awkward tension of the clerk. read more

Like other reviewers have said, Needle Nook is crammed full of yarn that you can spend hours perusing. The yarns include Malabrigo in all weights and lots of Noro, Plymouth Galway and Cascade 220. There are lots of interesting yarns, by which I mean seacell, bamboo, silk and alpaca. There also seems to be a wide selection of laceweight as well. There are also a lot of "interesting" yarns, by which I mean novelty ladder and ribbon yarns, boucle and acrylic. That said, there is a huge range of acrylics blends that are softer than you'd think, and I can see them being used for baby items. There are also tapestry wools and various tools for knitting and crocheting. The prices for all items (as far as I can tell) seem to be spot on and match the MSRP. With the good prices, decent selection, and plentiful free parking, it should be a great place. But while I love looking at all the sock yarn and the great selection of books, the staff, including the owner, can be curt, neglectful of customers, or downright rude. There seems to be a group of older "regulars" who sometimes stare you down while you're just trying to find some damn yarn, and that can intimidate newer or younger knitters who are trying to find a good deal or help with their projects. read more

I'm a knitter and like most knitters I'm obsessed with yarn - the feel of the soft strands skquishing in my palms, the rainbow of colors tumbling together in my stash basket - shear (pun intended) heaven..... a feast for all the senses. I don't know what I like best, collecting the yarn for my stash or sitting down and actually knitting a garment. And this is where the Needle Nook comes in - when I'm jonesing for a yarn fix, I can wander over to Lavista & Briarcliff and pop into this small store and satisfy my needs. They carry a select collection of quality knitting yarns - this is the good stuff, with the good stuff prices, - in wool, silk, cotton and manmade blends. The yarns are beautiful and they carry a lot of colors of each style - it's the only place I've seen the full color range of the Noro Kureyon wool yarns, great for felting projects. They also carry knitting needles and accessories. They sell the best brand of knitting needles I've ever used in my life - and I can't remember the name of the brand - agh! (They come in a green package and two women in Singapore designed them, if you want to try them.) They also carry needlepoint and embroidery supplies, but the main emphasis is knitting. They have a large table in the middle of the store where they hold classes each week - and they offer a monthly e-newsletter as well. Samples of the knitting from the class projects are placed around the store so you can see if you want to try your hand at the class. The staff seems to be friendly and helpful, but I've never taken a class, so I can't say anything about that. But I do love this place - I just have to ration how often I visit. It also happens to be next door to a Tuesday Morning. That makes the shopping trip an even harder hit to my wallet! read more

Cluttered. Scary. And home to buried treasure. If you come here shopping for yarn, prepare for a fantastic voyage. You can find yarns that are neither plastic nor weird and sparkly nor extra chunky. But guess what? There's only going to be one or two hanks of what you like. This place shines, however, when it comes to tools. I highly recommend the Denise interchangeable needle set; it'll save you a *lot* of money and a *lot* of space. And the Needle Nook carries it. Huzzah. read more

This is a wonderful place to shop for both crocheters and knitters. Although I made the mistake of not buying enough yarn two different times. Both times they won't order a small amount with the exception of me needing to finish my project. I wish i had known a certain yarn was not going to going to be ordered again. That project will have to be donated. Depending on the day you'll have a good experience. My biggest complaint is the hours. I wish Needle Nooks hours were extended, after 5:00pm is when the working class is able to shop. So PLEASE Needle Nook stay open later. read more

I've read the reviews with some interest... and I can see some of the points being made. There's a lot of yarn in the NeedleNook but the organization is definitely eclectic. Perhaps especially if you are new to knitting or crocheting. I think it's organized by weight, and then perhaps some special sections within that (wool, sock yarn) etc... It took me a while to get to know the staff at the Needle Nook. That changed when I started to come for knitting sessions, particularly a marathon that was making hats for the Women's March (you know the type). spending time there helped me to get to know everyone, the other customers and the staff, and that changed my experience of the Needle Nook. What it does very well is that it has an amazing selection of yarns for a shop its size. It's got much more stock than many other smaller yarn stores, and it's squeezed in there. One outcome is that yes you do see reviews that talk about the organization, but I think it's a trade-off​... you can organize less stock well, but you then forego selection. So the way I see it is that I'll take more at a good price over a slightly easier to parse layout. read more

I left the needle nook in tears. My grandmother is in town and said she would teach me how to knit so I went to the needle nook to her needles and yarn. When I walk and tell the lady working I had never knit before she made a rude comment about me being clueless and had that I probably had no idea what I was even looking for. I told her what my grandma suggested I get and she proceeded to start asking me a bunch of technical question that I didn't know the answer to then got annoyed. Another customer made a suggestion and she literally SWATTED THEM AWAY. During all of this another customer came in without a mask on and the worker told them they needed to put one on. When the customer asked the worker if she had one she could barrow she loudly said that people should be able to read the signs on the door and that people are so inconsiderate and that "when I'm working if you don't wear a mask I'll kill ya." The worker ended up finding a mask and the customer put it on without complaint but as a bystander to the whole situation it was an extremely rude reaction. Her attitude and customer service skills were so terrible it was like something off an SNL skit. As someone who came in exited to learn a new skill a left feeling very shaken and like I had been treated like a complete idiot. read more

I love going into neighborhood knit shops when in a different city. This shop has been here 41 years. It's very cluttered and musty, but with an excellent selection of yarns at a wide variety of price points. Luxury fibers and acrylics. The owner is quite a character - a bit curmudgeonly in a "i've owned this shop for 41 years" way. I like that. She was very opinionated about my selection and made sure I had the right size needles. She also wanted to make sure I understood potential problems with a variegated yarn I was getting. I saw a number of people who appeared to be regulars. The staff (owner and an employee) were friendly and helpful without being overbearing, for example pointing out some new Malabrigo arrivals when I was browsing the Mal sock offerings, but otherwise content to let me wander around. I do a lot of yarn shopping. Most of it online. But I NEED to go into a store every now and then to 'feel' the yarn and to 'see' the newest colors and compare the weights of a new worsted with a dk. So I accidentally stopped into the Needle Nook again. Why oh why, year after year?? This store is just...blech. Don't hold my hand. Don't say "hi" I'm a self entertaining shopper. Put in my earbuds and me and the yarn can commune for an hour or two. Unless I have a question. Like, "hi, where are the 4 basic most popular colors of this common yarn?" ummm, like, yeah, those are the names of those four colors, cause I'm like totally wearing them in my scarf. See, right here and on my phone?? I know you don't have them, cause they're like, totally not anywhere. I'm asking you if you have any in the back or if you have some on back order or if you're ordering anymore soon or how that works? It would be beyond pointless to tell you how that conversation ended. By then, I had also been severely admonished for walking around with a coffee. So I chugged it; even though my 'sippy cup' had a little spill cap. Being a little wired, and emboldened by caffeine, I asked the person at Needle Nook for a yarn recommendation, just because. This is a fairly simple and typical "yarn store" question; it's the reason why most folks open their own yarn store. The answer I received was so deliberately wrong, that I just left. To say that the "Customer Service" at Needle Nook is abrupt and finicky and snobby and rude would be an understatement. So if you need "help" or "assistance" finding the right yarn for your project, Needle Nook is not your store. If you shop independently and you just need to pick up the right yarn in the right weight in the right color, it's really hit or miss at Needle Nook. They "might" have that color in the worsted, probably not. Call ahead. I had a list of 16 yarns; I was only able to find 5 of them in the right weight at Needle Nook, only 3 of them were "for sale" and ordering those other yarns pretty much got me told off. I do not like leaving negative reviews but I went there today and I was completely ignored. No one asked me if I needed assistance or anything. The lady that worked there was more into talking to someone else that was already there. Then my son touched some yarn and she jumped on him scolding him not to touch it (mind you my son is two years old and being watched by his father). I felt that not only was she out of line but over all I did not feel welcome, I was very upset and left immediately. I am a fiber artist but not a knitter. I do use a fair amount of yarn in my work, though. I've been to the Needle Nook several times and found yarn I've enjoyed using. Recently I purchased a skein of Plymouth Yarn Baby Alpaca Grande. Oops. During the process of making my art work I use cool water and the color of the yarn ran like crazy and ruined the project. I've used lots of hand dyed yarn and commercially dyed yarn and I have never had one run like this one did, I might have expected some dye run if I had been using hot water. But this much dye loss with cold water would ruin anyone's day. So I went back to tell the ladies at Needle Nook, hoping that they would want to warn other customers about the dye running. Okay, it might have been nice of them to offer me some small condolence. I did not think they would refund my money but that would have been especially nice since the ruined project was worth quite a little. I was pretty taken aback when their response was "Too bad. Happens a lot. You should have expected it. It's happened to me and ruined my project." and "No, we don't tell our customers about problems with yarns because that's a manufacturer's issue." Really? I can't afford to buy more products from them since they are more interested in just making the sale than how happy I am with my project. I make stocking caps for the homeless, and spend about $2000 on yarn per year. Needle nook will not get one more penny from me....bought 4 skeins of $17 /skein yarn yesterday and "Arlene" said she was only able to wind 2 of them on the ball winder for me. The store was empty and the ball winder is right in the middle of the store. Horrible, terrible customer service. Going to Sheepish in Decatur!! read more

Rude. I love supporting small local shops; especially for hand-made crafts, but each am every time I've gone to Needle Nook the staff is rude, unhelpful, and inflexible. As a young customer I am always discouraged by being treated poorly since these crafts need the next generation of participants to continue. And, any customer in a small store should be appreciated. Additionally, the store has a $10 min for credit AND debit charges. Imposing a minimum for credit cards is now legal; however, a retailer may NOT impose a minimum for debit cards. When I notified the cashier he held firm and I walked out without my purchase. I was $2 short and had already added an extra $8 purchase to my intended purchase of $2.50.
