Having a knitting-related semi-emergency, I blew into Needle Nook about 20 minutes before closing and was able to pick up exactly what I needed. Needle Nook is pretty unassuming. It's nestled between Thai Chili and FooTfittR in the Briar Vista Shopping Center. If you're like me and terrible with the names of all the zillions of shopping centers, it's the one with Red Pepper Taqueria and the freestanding Starbucks, across from Whole Foods. According to their Facebook page, Needle Nook has been around since 1976, so a while. They have a system that signs you up and the yarn you've purchased so in case you forget, they can pull that info up for you. Needle Nook also has classes. I spotted a flyer for a coffee koozie one. A lady offered to help me, and I was glad to see the specific brand of needle I'm familiar with, for a price competitive with online retailers. Good selection overall. I even managed to squeeze in a little browsing time to admire and touch all the soft pretty yarns.

I made my first trip to the Needle Nook during the 2008 Atlanta Shop Hop. I've driven by it several times, but never made it in time before they closed. Their yarn selection left me pleasantly surprised. They pretty much have a bit of everything, upscale fiber, wool, novelty yarn, baby yarn, sock yarn, and even the dreaded acrylic. Some knitters discriminate against the acrylic but not me. I do try not to knit with the super crappy acrylic yarn i.e. Red Heart Super Saver available at most Wal-Marts. But the Needle Nook has a nice selection of softer, better quality acrylics. Which are always nice to make baby blankets out of. Some people say not to make baby blankets out of acrylic, even though it's one of the few machine washable yarns, because the yarn will melt on a baby if the house ever caught on fire. Well the baby will probably die from smoke inhalation before the blanket turns into a gooey plastic-y mess.

The purse my wife just bought at the Needle Nook!!

I was visiting ATL for the weekend and wanted to visit some yarn stores so the Craftivist came up in my research. I saw that they host events for people to come in and work on their fiber arts a few times a week so this sold me on visiting! When I stopped in, I was greeted and there was space for me to sit down. I even got some help on my project. It was so nice to be community with people who love the fiber arts for a little while. I look forward to supporting their business since they also ship!

I recently had a private knitting lesson here…read more The instructor begin with telling me the different types of forms yarn comes in, ie. hanks, skeins and balls along with other information about knitting. After the introduction the instructor picked out a wood circular knitting needle for me. The reason for choosing the wood I was told it would help hold the yarn better for a beginner versus a metal needle. When it came time to choose the yarn I was told to make my choice from a small area. I picked a mustard yarn. The next day I received an invoice from the store because I didn't pay for the items. Silly me. I assumed because I was only allowed to pick out from a certain section that it was included with the lesson that I had paid for. Unfortunately, because the yarn I chose was quite small. It has been difficult as a beginner working with it. There have been a lot of starts and stops which I would expect but more so because of the size of the yarn. I have since learned as a beginner I should have a bulkier yarn. When I left that day, I had not gotten the hang of the cast on, or the knit stitch. Five minutes before the class was to end we had just finished casting on and that didn't leave much time for the knitting since the store was opening. Since taking the class I have been able to get the hang of the cast on and the knit stitch thanks to Sheep and Stitch on YouTube. I think the reason I didn't get the hang of it in the store was because of the teaching style. It just didn't mesh with my learning style. I would definitely recommend the classes to anyone here. Very professional staff. Because the yarn I ended up purchasing isn't good for beginners. I did call the store to see if I could exchange it, but I was told they would not accept it because it had already been wound. The staff was very nice. They were very helpful when customers came in.

Such a fun place!!…read more To celebrate my besties birthday recently, we took in an afternoon of fun that ended at All Fired Up. I hadn't done pottery painting in so long, All Fired Up was the perfect choice for us to celebrate our birthday girl. Located on a stip next to a busy street, All Fired Up offers parking behind their building which they share with neighboring businesses. When we went inside, I was surprised at how busy it was but didn't realize that kids were still out of school and enjoying some DIY pottery just like me. We made reservations for four and were surprised to see our name on a table, securing our timing and seating. This spot is also BYOB! We brought in some champagne to toast the occasion as we took in our crafts, such a nice touch whether you're with your girlies or on a solo DIY project. The variety of pottery options was incredible! From tiny pieces like ring holders to massive plates and animal sculptures - there's really something for everybody. The paint color options are clearly displayed with ink blots so that everyone knows what final shades to expect once their pieces are taken from the kiln. There are also a number of supplies such as paintbrushes, pencils, etc., all items needed to channel your inner artist. My girls and I sat at our little table for about 2 hours sipping on our bubbly, chatting and painting away. The place was really all abuzz with excitement from the amateur artists around the studio, never getting too loud or overwhelming. My only complaint is that it would be great to have more elbow room and space, as we were seated in front of some pottery options and other guests had to break their necks sliding behind our chairs/table to pick their pottery. Really close quarters for such fragile pieces! At the end of our visit we had some amazing painted pieces that we absolutely loved creating together and vowed to return to enjoy more pottery time. Worth the visit!

I overheard a guy say "it's like Pinterest except not on the computer screen." The event is held over a weekend at the Ambient + Studio warehouse, and there were probably close to 100 different booths -- plus they had a few food vendors like King of Pops and Good Food Truck, and the fabulous LeahandMark.com photo booth :) I think this was the 3rd time I've gone to ICE. I got a few things this year: - Magic Unicorn Sea Salt from "Beautiful Briny Sea Salt" - after taste testing a few different flavors (e.g., Lavender, Rosemary, and Truffle), my favorite was Magic Unicorn. Haha, suspicious name but honest ingredients - pure ocean salt, celery seed, rosemary, granulated garlic, smoked paprika, and lemon juice powder. I also liked their Truffle Sea Salt. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Beautiful-Briny-Sea/157240431005788 - Port Wine Caramel from "Sweeteeth" - I'd never tasted such good caramel like theirs ... I went w/ the port wine b/c I liked the the smoky "brulee" type flavor and it also tasted kinda chocolately even though there's no chocolate. Can't wait to use the sauce on apples, ice cream, pies, cakes, and more ... just don't tell my doctor. http://www.sweeteethchocolate.com - Cute bonnet and bib from "Owlette Collective" - some lucky baby's going to get this super cute set. I couldn't resist. http://www.etsy.com/shop/owlettecollective - Goat Milk and Lavender Oatmeal Soap from "Belle Terre" - smelled several of their soaps and this one was my favorite. First I love anything lavender, I'd never heard of goat milk used in soap (and the lady said they are sourced from happy goats who are well-treated), plus the oatmeal is supposed to be a good exfoliator :) I need to hurry and finish up my Ivory. http://belleterrenc.com/home/welcome/ What I didn't get but really liked (and may get later): - Red Fascinator Hat from "LaCocoRouge" - they had a great selection of fun mini-hats that looked like something Carrie Bradshaw would wear ... or anyone attending a Royal Wedding. I just need to find an occasion to wear them :) http://www.etsy.com/shop/lacocorouge Definitely worth a visit, esp. if you love "unique" items :) Oh and they always have great jewelry. Last year, I got one of my favorite necklaces from "Katherine Smith Jewelry" that always gets many compliments. http://www.etsy.com/shop/ksmithjewelry FYI - there's $5 admission to get in.
