This used to be such a staple. An Atlanta institution. I grew up with an interior designer mom so I spent a lot of time here as a child (the old location). AS an adult I have spent far less time, but I recently moved out of state and we have nothing like this in my new area so I was looking forward to my stop here on a recent visit to collect swatches for the many projects I have planed for or new house. Wow is it different. First and most clearly it's a much smaller footprint. Many of the options have been reduced to sample books that you cannot take a sample of yourself to see in our space and lighting. How is this helpful? They used to have scissors, labels and pencils at every bay so that you could take distinctive notes for each sample you got. Not anymore. I had to take a photo of the swatch with label and sku and try to get a bit of the roll in to get a larger look at the sample. By the tome I got them all home I had no idea what each was or how to reference it. So the entire visit ended up was a wast of my time and energy and frankly, their resources. The samples are all precut (and tiny). So if you want a swatch f a print or embroidered material good luck getting a clear swatch with all the colors and/or details in it. They also were out of a lot of of the swatches. I mentioned they are precut now?...well if you are going to do that then you need to make sure that you are keeping them stocked regularly. I would say about half of what I wanted a swatch of, I had to walk to the front, ask a staff member to get up from her work, walk back with me and find what I was looking at, and cut me a swatch because they aren't checking it regularly. This is such a waste of my time and theirs (staff seemed to also be annoyed at this and my constant asking them to stop what they were doing to walk around the store to cut a single swatch) and never used to be an issue under the old system. They have also taken a huge portion of the space for cheep furniture. Think like Homegoods level stuff. Nothing special or particularly interesting. It is all very inexpensive (and it looks it-it all looked kind of junky) but like why? They significantly downgraded the footprint of the store and used a huge portion of the smaller space...for this? What is the purpose when you could use that space to being back some of the rolls of actual material? They did not have a lot of patterns & prints, embroidered materials, beaded fabrics, or anything really textural or interesting. They used to have so much diversity and what was there was mostly variations of plain textiles or really "southern" feeling prints...So it just lost a lot of what used to make this place so good. While chatting with staff I found out that the store was sold some years ago which seems to be the root of the issue. So if the owners or management see this, please for the love of all that is holy go back to the old systems because this isn't working. I can understand making changes and economizing but the way they have done this isn't positive, especially as your prices have gone way up and your offerings have deteriorated so dramatically. I was just window shopping (with the intent to place a large order for shipment) and if this is the new experience to get swatches to consider, I can't imagine the ordering process would be any less frustrating. It just making a much more frustrating experience for you customer. If I had never been here prior to this experience I wouldn't be returning. I hope it is a one off, but after seeing some other recent reviews, it seems to be the new normal. Shame on the new owners. read more

We needed fabric to reupholster our dining room chairs and figure I would check this place out. There's ample of parking on the lot. They require you to wear masks and social distance. We were greeted immediately upon entry. We have no idea what we were looking for and everyone was so helpful. All the fabrics are arranged by color scheme. They have custom order fabric to the right and trims all the way to the left. Clearances are also to the left. They have so many choices and patterns. Everyone was nicely displayed. We picked out a few prints that we liked and asked if it would be good for upholstery. The gentleman that helped us was so patient and gave us his honest opinion. We were able to get some nice fabric on sale (which was additional 50% off). We will find another excuse to visit soon. So miss the old Forsyth Fabric owners and staff!! Was a customer for over 25 years and now NO MORE!! The male owner is the most unfriendly person and there seems to be no one in the store anymore! You can tell their business is nothing like it use to be. They are overly priced with no great fabrics on premises any longer. Long gone are the days of happy designers and customers joyously shopping and tons of staff helping with smiling faces! This new location/ownership is sad and cold. read more

Forsyth Fabrics is an Atlanta staple if you are looking for great fabrics. There is a decent selection of fabrics that are available immediately but an even larger selection of fabrics that can be custom ordered. The only downside to orders that there is an additional charge for doing so. The store is arranged by color so that is really helpful and they do a good job of putting fabrics together that will make a beautiful statement in your room. When I'm needing fabrics I always stop by here. It's worth the drive. read more

In the middle of cutting my fabric the employee stopped, cut someone else's fabric left the area, wrapped it in paper took it to the front desk. I typically write reviews much sooner but with a busy schedule being a business owner, I typically check in and then write the reviews on the weekends when I have time. My spouse and I bought fabric from this place last year and then decided to take our 50+ year old Pierre Cardin MCM chairs there to be reupholstered. Let's just say other than the "clerk" the rest of the entire experience was a nightmare which ended with me having to get legal counsel who represents my business to to step in and start legal action. We dropped off these chairs in perfect condition however we didn't like the color of fabric on them when we bought them and wanted to update the color. The fabric we purchased from there was great but the "upholstery job" was a nightmare. When we dropped them off we were very specific that we did want the "vintage" and "original" Pierre Cardin labels removed from the bottom of the chair. When they did the job the literally bolted the back of the chairs back on thru the new fabric and removed the original labels. Had they done them correctly the bolts should have been underneath the fabric and not thru the fabric and the original labels in tack. After learning of this I had to start dealing with the owner which was a nightmare. He agreed that the job was botched but that we must still pay full price for the work even though they caused damages to the chair by removing the antique labels that resulted in a great lose of value. This is where our attorney's had to step in and mediate for us. Ultimately the owner wanted fully compensated for their botched job even though they caused our chairs to loose over $1000 in value much more than the upholstery cost. I truly believe we would still be dealing with this today had our attorney not intervened and held his feet to the fire. We ended up not having to sue them because the owner finally got over his cocky arrogance and understood harm had been done to our property. He finally agreed to turn over the chairs and we would go our separate ways. I WOULD NOT recommend taking any items to be upholstered to this shop. There are other shops in the area such as Century Upholstery or Lewis & Sharon Textiles that do amazing jobs...BEWARE this place botched a job on our 50+ year MCM chairs which resulted in loss of value and they didn't believe they did anything wrong even though they didn't follow directions on the work order. read more

This fabric store has a wide selection of fabrics, and is very well organizer by color. I came here looking for fabric for a dress, and some zippers and buttons, and they only had upholstery fabric. It is a good store for home decor but not for your average sewer. I think they should mark it as upholstery. The service was good, and it had a nice quiet atmosphere. Very pricey, $50 for some simple fabric. read more

Didn't have an incredible first time experience here today, here's why: When I entered, no one bothered to greet me nor after wandering around, asked if I needed any assistance or help. But that's neither here or there, let's talk about the fabric. It's mostly drapery and upholstery, not sewing fabric (from what I could see). The lights went out in one section, so IDK. Apparently the owners are new. We called in advance to verify availability of a rug from their website. Upon arriving (a very big trip!), the greeter told us they don't sell rugs. I had to argue with her until someone else came over and said, "Yes, we have rugs!" The rug he showed us from the website was a MISREPRESENTATION and was a small section of a rug photo-shopped inaccurately. We totally wasted our time. So disappointed that Forsyth Fabrics has changed ownership! It was an Atlanta landmark for years & years. The family members who had owned it for (3) generations were always on the floor and available to advise and help customer and designers. Now, while the staff is friendly and attempts to be helpful, they are far less knowledgeable. Historically, the prices were discounted and the selection extraordinary. Very poor customer service. Was provided a quote and when my drapes were complete, the final charge was $600 more than the original. The team told me "they don't usually do drapes and fabric together" and weren't used to all-in pricing. They were unwilling to offer the original price (or come down at all). Fabrics 4 stars. Customer service 1 star. I have not been to this store since the early 2000's. So, when I was in the area to avoid any traffic that the I-85 may cause, I decided to visit. I found the fabric that I wanted. The store seemed short handed on this busy Sunday with 2 people cutting fabric. That wasn't the problem. The issue was when I went to ths front to retrieve and pay for the fabric, I stood at the counter, IN FRONT OF THE CASHIER (older African American female), for about 3 minutes before she even said anything. Totally a rude person. And, yes Rude Ass, I know I was purchasing vinyl as opposed to leather as you pointed out as if to belittle my purchase. Actually, I should have just walked out. I did not know it was more for home decorating (curtain, chair, ottoman fabric). I was looking for some fabric to make a cape for Halloween. So I just asked an associate and she kindly took me what she thought might work. She also gently directed me to Hancock's. She was wonderful! Because I know just enough about sewing to know their beautiful heavy fabrics are not what I wanted. Anyone that will send you to another store for the best outcome of your project is good people. Forsyth Fabrics is a great place to find fabrics and trim for all your home decorating projects. The people are nice and there's a great selection. They've done a pretty good job of organizing and making the most of their old and oddly shaped building. Some of the rooms/aisles are pretty dark and slightly creepy, but the selection is hard to beat, particularly when it comes to fabric for decorating kids rooms. Fabrics are sorted by type and color. They've got lots of fabrics at the front where the pattern comes in assorted colors that you can order by the yard online. Then they've got the warehouse like room at the back with the richer silks, velvets, suedes, etc. There trim selection is extensive. They've got a room for outdoor fabrics, with special instructions not to use them inside because the special treatments will cause them to wear faster with everyday indoor use. Check with the men at the cutting table for stuff that is on the bolt. There's a sign that says to press the button for service, but they'd really prefer that you wait the short time until someone will be back to help you... There is a warning sign about the valuables in the car just outside the front door. Hopefully it's more a reminder of days past, but you've been warned. Then again, my car doesn't compare to those of the Buckhead Betty's in the parking lot who come here to design their dream houses, so maybe I don't need to worry too much about the bars on the windows. read more

I have shopped at Forsyth Fabrics for over 25 years. It's my go-to place for upholstery fabric. They are taking COVID very seriously. All of the employees are wearing masks and some even have face shields on. There is hand sanitizer available (and candy, too!). They require masks on all customers. Bravo! I purchased 14 yards of a fabric from the back room and had some left over so I decided to use it to cover an additional chair. I ran out of fabric and so I came back to Forsyth to order more. It turns out the fabric was discontinued. But, Marcellon and Andres called the supplier multiple times are were able to secure 15 more yards ! I was so amazed at the great customer service. Marcellon called me and I ordered the fabric over the phone. She apologized for my inconvenience (it was not inconvenient, she was doing me a favor) and was very polite and helpful. Recently I found a pair of Candice Olsen chairs at a Hotel Liquidation center. Well that happened at Forsyth!! Okay not LITERALLY, but i do think I heard birdies singing. The staff was very helpful, extremely courteous and friendly. I found this beautiful geometric viscose and silk velvet fabric for $13.99 a yard. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the price. It came in many different colors, and they were all on sale that day. I bought a total of 6 yards for the backs of my chairs. I can't wait too see how they turn out, when my upholstery guy Walt finishes them!! What did I do before Forsyth? I found a fabulous ottoman at The Goodwill for $25 and was looking for the perfect covering to compliment its salvaged structure. Lo and behold, I found a cool damask orange-ish fabric that was just made for this piece of furniture. Originally $30/yard, I scored it for $10/yard. Today I went in, asked about the location of certain items and was told "we would have to order that, we don't have that here." I was in mid-sentence trying to explain what I wanted when this same woman (at the counter) turned to speak to a co-worker and wouldn't acknowledge I was still standing there. I'm not artsy craftsy, but this place makes me wish I was. The selection is kinda overwhelming at first, but it's cool that they have such a range of stuff. I just wish there were more ethnic fabrics - some African or Indian prints are definitely missing. I took my mom there and we got yards and yards of fabric so she can make me curtains and upholster a chair. They are gonna be so awesome and the prices were super reasonable says my mom, the artsy crafty seamstress. The staff was really nice and answered my stupid questions and engaged in seamstress banter with my mom. There's a big bowl of candy up front with tootsie rolls and lollipops, too. If you're the type of person who makes her own purses or covers pillows, or anything creative - you should check it out. read more

I took some drapes in to be refined. I gave them all the time they needed. When I started to hang them I noticed that one side was not completed. Some one stitched to within three inches from the top. The thread was hanging down and had not been finished. I had heard good things, and honestly at this price, there is no excuse for sloppy workmanship. read more

Under new ownership according to a sign out front; very few customers. I bought some very expensive trim today and found that it didn't match the fabric I intended to pair it with. I took it back the same day, and they refused to take it back because "we don't take trim back once it's cut". No signs are posted saying that, and none of the 3 guys who helped me told me about that policy. Nice customer service, new owners! read more
