I can be really particular about GOOD Mexican food - but this exceeded my expectations as GREAT Mexican food! Just a little hole-in-the-wall place right off the UNR campus, and adjacent to a Mexican market, Mi Ranchito is authentic, customer-friendly, and most importantly, DELICIOUS. Although the surrounding neighborhood isn't the best, it's definitely worth it and I didn't feel unsafe going there, at least not in the daylight. I walked in at an early dinner time, around 5 pm, and was greeted immediately by the cashier. The restaurant was small, but with a decent amount of seating, and smelled amazing when I first walked in. I was shocked at how cheap the burritos were on the menu, so I asked how big the burritos were. She said they were big so I went ahead and ordered a regular chicken burrito with added cheese (BIG PLUS! It already comes with guacamole!) I ordered it to go and asked for extra chili verde on the side just in case it wasn't flavorful enough for me. I was wrong - I didn't even need the extra chili verde because the burrito was SO PERFECT. Soft, handmade tortillas, juicy shredded chicken, delicious homemade rice all held together by the cheese, guacamole, and sour cream - this place is everything I need from a Mexican restaurant. I'll definitely be going back the next time I'm craving Mexican food, and the price can't be beat! read more

One of my co-workers, who is from Mexico, said Mi Ranchito had the most authentic Mexican food in town and I can't say I disagree. I visited here on a Friday night around 7:30pm. It was not busy. The table my boyfriend and I chose to sit at hadn't been wiped down yet, but the cashier wiped it down right after he brought us our drinks. This place can be easy to miss because they do not have a giant sign above the establishment (or maybe they do and I couldn't see it because it was dark out). Food: B I ordered the Burrito with 2 Tacos, under the "Daily Specials", for $8. What a good deal! (A la carte, tacos are $1.35- best price I've seen in town.) The meat I chose for the tacos were Lengua (beef tongue) and Carne Asada and for the burrito, Chorizo. Both the tacos were delicious. I don't know which was which, but one of them was really wet because a sauce was drizzled on it. I felt I had to eat that one first so the corn tortilla wouldn't get soggy. It was messy but tasty. The burrito was the worst part of my meal only because of my meat choice. I was not a fan of the chorizo at all; it was minced, slightly dry, and not flavored well. My boyfriend tried it and also did not like the chorizo. In addtion, the burrito was stuffed to the max with chorizo. I'd say 90% of the filling was chorizo; it was also filled with rice, cheese, lettuce, and sour cream but I could barely taste any of them. I ate every bite of the burrito with Salsa Huichol, a new hot sauce to me. I really like it! It's like a better Cholula. I also tried their horchata- no complaints here. Atmosphere: B Mi Ranchito is a small place- the seating area is 1 room and I believe there were only 2 staff working when I was there- 1 cashier/waiter and 1 cook. Despite their humble look, Mi Ranchito provides great service with great food. The only complaint I have is that I didn't get any chips and salsa at the beginning but I did see a party that came in later receive some. Amazing find, a hidden hotspot with excellent food and service. I admit I'm hooked on the child Rellenos, they make these right with lots of cheese and poblano peppers. The carne asada tacos are authentic and delicious with just the right amount of onion, cilantro and salsa. We've eaten several items from the menu and everything is excellent, they pay attention to quality and detail so it's a no brainer that this is our go to place for Mexican food. Yesterday my friend and I stopped by here because the reviews were the best out of the three I looked at. It was a hole in the wall. But very nice as we walked in. The server was the waiter as well. It took me over two years of passing this place by to finally try it. It's barely noticeable on the end of a strip mall, a tiny hole in the wall place. And it is SO good. I called in an order tonight and she said "is five minutes okay?" Yes of course that's okay! I couldn't imagine they'd have it ready that fast, but I showed up six minutes later and she greeted me with my bag. For 5.92 I walked out with a huge, heavy carnitas burrito. The sole employee I interacted with was super friendly and the service was prompt. The interior is small but clean and nicely decorated. The burrito itself is huge and WONDERFUL. I very, very rarely eat meat, for a variety of reasons. When I do occasionally give up the meatless life for a meal, I'm usually disappointed - I just don't really "get" meat. But this burrito was incredible. It comes standard with a ton of stuff on it, including guacamole - when is that ever not extra? I got everything except sour cream on it, because sour cream is gross (sorry) and it was fantastically flavorful and very filling. I still have leftover for breakfast! tl;dr this place is amazing. This is my favorite hole in the wall mexican food place. Ive never had a bad experience here or have never had food that disappointed my tastes and expextations. I really can't say enough good things about this place. Their horchata isnt too sweet, they have the large coke in a bottle, and really delicious food. From burritos that have guacamole included, to suculent chicken tacos, crazy deliciois nachos, and fantastic daily specials, they will fulfill all your cravings. Normally i get at least 2 chicken tacos every time i go, but today i changed it up. I went for the pozole and let me tell you, it didnt disappoint. Im still salivating thinking of the pork that was in it. It was packed full of hominy and pork, plus the addition of onion, lettuce, and radish. I wish i could have added some stored oregano but it was still good without. But seriously, i dont think ive ever had better pork. It was like the best carnitas ever. You must eat here. read more

Great prices and even better service! This was a spur of the moment forgot my lunch starving to death stop. From the outside one might think they where walking into a dive bar or a shady pawn shop. Once you reach the doors you are greeted with the delightful smell of fresh limes, cilantro and salsa! Beyond the doors you quickly forget the outside and embrace the traditional decor and friendly smiles that welcome you in. I always take it as a good sign if the place is packed but often fear the service will reflect how busy they are. I was surprised when my chips, drink, and salsa where at my table before I finished deciding what to eat. I decided on the burrito with two tacos special. The portions are huge, enough to share and it was only $7.50!! The owner works along side her staff always with a smile. Checking on each table visiting with the regulars and offering refills. The overall feel was like being at your grandma's house for dinner! Everything was fresh and cooked to perfection! I highly recommend this place! I ordered bean enchiladas-- I needed the protein but didn't want to risk greasy meats. They don't usually make bean enchiladas but made them without issue for me. There are few soft spots in my heart. Okay probably more than a few, but good Mexican food is definitely one of them. My inability to have patience in the kitchen and my continuation of the burrito diet has led me here with good friends. And what can I say - delicious, and inexpensive for what you get. (But seriously, where can you get a carne Asada burrito that you stuff yourself with because it's too good to even save any for leftovers for just six bucks?!?) The location is not immediately on the way but super close to North Reno landmarks such as the University and many college hangs but not too on the main path so you're not dealing with crazy college students (Sorry college students - you're welcome to come, but the Wal is a special place for a reason). The food is authentic and the owner will greet you with a smile and be more than willing to recommend something if needed. They have a wide assortment of tacos, burritos and another personal favorite chile rellenos as well. It's a quaint location, and definitely on the casual side, but clean and welcoming. Still on the hunt for our go-to Mexican spot in Reno, we tried Mi Ranchito with high hopes due to all the great reviews. Unfortunately, this one isn't it. I had the carne asada burrito. Although the meat was a little chewy, I thought the flavor of it was great. But the tortilla was flimsy and undercooked to the point of still being sticky and squishy, the beans were flavorless and mushy and seemingly from a can, and the guac was straight up bad. I also had the chips and guac and the guacamole was very noticeably old, as it was all brown with blackened spots. I've seen some spotty guacs before, but nothing anywhere near this bad. I can't believe the kitchen actually saw that and decided to serve it. Big disappointment. read more

This makes me SO sad to write. Prior to ownership changing, the food was consistent, delicious, and a great price for the portion sizes. I live in the same neighborhood as Mi Ranchito, and had been going consistently twice a week for almost three years. Now that the ownership has changed, the quality of food has gone down DRASTICALLY. I ordered the armadillo as I have many times before and I received all chicken, no asada, two pieces of shrimp, and barely anything else. The wet burritos, chimichangas, etc have also been extremely disappointing. They've also stopped adding sour cream, guac, radish, etc on the side without requesting it. The beans were extremely runny and the rice has been cold every time I've gone since ownership changed. Unfortunately, for the price and quality I will not be returning any longer. Daily combos are good deals. Good value for your money. I got the chicken torta---it was very tasty. I liked the combination of flavors and the little spice from the jalapeños. It was big so I only ate half and was full. We also shared the Johnny Fries which were an interesting alternative to traditional carne fries. They used al pastor and some type of sauce with ketchup. Burrito/taco combo is listed as $8 online but I was charged $14 when picking up! Maybe gringo price? They typically give 2 salsa cups per burrito but when I asked for more than 2 tiny cups for 2 tacos/burrito I was told NO and quoted $10 for extra salsa! Whaaaa??? Horrible. Help yourself don't go there. I read these yelp reviews and had high expectation. It's located in a low end strip mall, which is fine. We ordered a fried whole fish, guac+chips, and a few tacos to go. We waited for 35mins in the car, because the chef accidentally burned our food and had to recook. Which was fine. We took our food to realize the lady forgot our guac and chips! We called them right away and she asked us to come back next time to get those (which I will not). The fish was stale and disgusting, even if it was fried! I had two bites and had to throw it away. The beans and cheese were also disgusting I didn't eat. I had a bite of the rice but they were so dry and flavorless. The tacos were also meh but not as disgusting, we ate two of them and throw away the rest. 90% of the food end up in the trash can. We didn't want food poisoning. Will I go back to get my guac and chips? No way. I'm not sure if it's a COVID-19 issue or what, but if you're open, then I expect you can serve food. read more

The food was great and exactly what I was craving for. I usually judge a place on the Chile Relleno, as i feel if you can't cook that right you can't cook anything. It hit the spot, and my wife ordered the Carne Asada which was also on point. I didn't even think about horchata until i read another review, will definitely have to get that next time. The only thing is you need to get past how torn down the outside looks, as they clearly focus on the inside and the food. I thought about 4 stars, but i'm judge on food and not an outside paint job. Pros: carne asada fries are enormous and carne asada buritto was not bad I give it a 3 out of 5. Cons: during this pandemic a lot of people are on edge about contracting the corona virus so the reason I gave it two stars is because the lady that was cooking did not wash her hands at all and she is touching the food that are being served. So if you are a germophobe don't eat here you will be grossed out. I ate my mines cause I was hungry as shit from a 4 hour drive. I'm not really sure if you can get the virus through cook food but the wrapper and styrofoam container, you can definitely get it from especially if you touch your orifices. This place is a diamond in the rough. My wife and I stopped by here because we were in the area around UNR but didn't want to eat at Cane's or Jimmy Johns. Definitely check this place out. We split a super quesadilla (it's thick!!), two tacos pollos, and two carne asada tacos all for about $13. The meat was juicy and plentiful and the ingredients were excellent. We came here since Carlitos was closed. Really clean, authentic Mexican restaurant with friendly service. Very inexpensive. Hubby ordered the pork chili verde which was extra tender and great flavor. I had the chorizo and eggs which I would pass on next time. The style chorizo was dry and crispy and reminded me of corned beef and hash.
