The place is a little old school in a nice way! The atmosphere is something out of an old movie but the staff is extremely friendly and very helpful! We've come here for lunch quite often and the food comes quick, so you can be in and out in less than an hour. The best selling point of this place is the food to price ratio. They have generous serving sizes for a decent price and the quality is on point as well. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a high end place but you get what you pay for! For example, most of the cheeses used are standard and they don't have a huge variety but they get the job done! I really loved their chicken salad! I love this restaurant! This has been one of the best Mexican restaurants I have found since moving to Bellingham from SoCal 3 years ago. The guacamole is made from avocados and not that weird spread stuff that some restaurants try to pass off as "fresh guacamole". The carne assada is flavorful, tender and just wonderful. Its what I order every time I eat here. :) The staff is also very friendly and welcoming. Everyone working seems happy to be at work which says a lot about management and the owners. This place was amazing!!! We stopped in Bellingham on our way up to Vancouver. The receptionist at our hotel suggested this place and I could be happier. The staff was very welcoming and friendly . We were greeted and seated right away. The menu is huge and it's hard to pick one they all sounded so good. I finally decided on the steak burrito and it was HUGE!! Not only was the burrito itself large but it was served with a large portion of retried beans and rice. It was all delicious. I love a good Chile Relleno and the one I was served here was only average. Too many seeds and not enough cheese. Also the chorizo on the nachos was off tasting. Like it was rancid. Service was a bit slow but I will give them a break because it was very busy. I liked the colorful decor but the restaurant is in desperate need of a good cleaning. The floor was filthy. Our party ordered the chicken and beef fajitas which was tender and flavorful; and the Camarones Mojo de Ajo (shrimp and mushrooms with garlic sauce) - that garlic sauce was amazing with just a hint of pan-charred garlic. They also have a kids' menu for the kiddos. Though we wished they had horchata for drinks. The fried Ice cream was a delicious finale to a wonderful meal: A great big ball of vanilla ice cream with a deep fried crispy layer on the outside over a deep fried sweet flat bread; it was even too much for four people. This is our favourite place to go for dinner before we get back to Vancouver. There is no decent Mexican cuisine in Vancouver such as this. The menu is extensive- we usually have the large combinations, there is not much of a price difference from a single order. They give you a choice of refried beans or black beans in the dish. I do not like both instead I usually ask for just rice. They are quite nice & accommodating. The service is usually fast & friendly. Except for this time when we went, the server appears to have misinterpreted our orders, luckily I double checked with her & it was corrected. She definitely was not friendly towards us & did not bother to do a follow up check with us, she did do a follow up check with the other tables. She also messed up the other table's order. That kind of service is unusual in that restaurant. Otherwise we love going there for dinner. Your dinner is served with complimentary tortillas chips with salsa, with refills if you like. Parking is decent, it is behind Burger King, you won't miss it. Decorations in the restaurant is very colourful & bright, nice atmosphere to enjoy with your meal. read more

I'm having difficulty understanding how the ratings for this establishment are so high. Maybe it's because the ratings are mostly from Canadians and folks from Washington who have no idea how Mexican food is supposed to taste. Perhaps it's because marijuana is legal here now and everyone is too high to make a decent judgement. All I know is that good Mexican food is so much better than this. To be fair, we're from Texas via Arizona where Mexican food is precious and almost always prepared with great care. Mi Mexico is definitely not good Mexican food and I'd venture to propose that they have trash cans stuffed with Ortega frozen cardboard packages out back. Food: Poor at best. The Tamales were hard, tasteless, and boring. The chile rellanos were so salty and mushy I couldn't eat more than a small bite. The rice was like little pebbles that attempted to break teeth. The beans were OK but nothing to write home about. Finally, the most important part of the meal (Salsa) was watery, runny, and tasted like Ortega tomato juice. Yuck. Margaritas: Awesome. That's the only reason the restaurant didn't get a single star. Service: It's OK but not great. The place was almost empty and the service was pretty slow. Prices: Average for Mexican food but WAY too expensive for the crap they serve. Let's face it. Mexican food isn't that difficult to make but this place is complete crap. Came here for lunch with my boyfriend after shopping at Home Depot. This place was delicious, very lively and fun! The staff are exceptionally nice and outgoing - filling our waters constantly and asking how we were doing. The music was loud and it was very busy but we got our food quickly. Come here during lunch time cause the meals are large and cheap! Even got a little take-home container and had the leftovers for dinner! This is my favourite Mexican place I've been to. I have recommended this place to several friends !!! Basically - here : HUGE portions, cheap/reasonable prices, free salsa and chips (if you are feeling ravenous the moment you enter), delicious flavours, wonderful staff and colourful, interesting decor!! What more could you want?? The food is fantastic - we usually get one of the combinations (variations of tamale/enchilada/taco/tostada) which comes with retired beans, rice, cheese, and coleslaw. All fresh and hot and delicious. This is $10 or less!!!! And it is. Gigantic. I've NEVER finished a full portion. It's great for leftovers. We also usually get the fried ice cream as well - for only around $5, you get a BIG scoop of vanilla ice cream with a cinnamon sugar crust on a crispy tortilla and whipped cream and strawberry sauce and chocolate drizzle!!!! After living in San Francisco for so many years, moving to Vancouver, I found a dearth of good Mexican food. My coworker had suggested coming here to get my craving filled, and I was definitely not let down. Would I say it's the best Mexican food I've ever had? Definitely no, but it's not the worst, and it's better than what I've had (for the most part) in Vancouver. The specials are huge and you get chips and salsa when you're there! I do have to say the food taste good but unfortunately they got it wrong the first time and then brought my daughters food back cold. I specifically asked for no beans, but of course the entire plate was filled with beans. The people that work there are very nice until I said excuse me are you going to continue to vacuum while people are sitting here eating and then he replied to me and said yes we do and we take pride in it. I asked him why would the same lady touch the food, the vacuum the chips and sit people down and he said she washed her hands and I said no she didn't and he argued with me and then wouldn't allow me to speak to a manager. I have never written a negative yelp, and I would probably not have written this, but it was so disgusting to watch. It went on for 20 minutes! We had to talk over each other literally every time someone left she vacuumed and was smoking at me because she could see I was holding my ears. Had heard and read a lot about this place, and so we decided to give it a whirl. It was my choice for Father's Day and I was down for some generous portions of Mexican food, and Mi Mexico seemed like the perfect spot. When the chips & salsa came out, I warned the kids to pace themselves but why would they listen to me...they always know better. The server must have refilled the chips like 4 times while we were deciding what to order, I found myself stuffing my face irresponsibly. This place was still busy when I dropped by around 2pm after some shopping. There was lots of diverse clientele and everyone seemed to be happy with the food. I saw almost everyone holding takeout boxes after their meals and leaving with satiated stomachs. The environment was family friendly and fun with their brightly handcrafted chairs. Lots of servers rushing about. Also, if it's your birthday, you can take a picture with a sombrero and get a free dessert. As the lunch queen, I was happy to find that all their lunch specials were under $10. The portions were ample and we had leftovers. We ordered steak carnitas and the seafood crema. Both were delicious. I also appreciated the fact that I could order the horchata half sweet, which was still good. I think this place is very busy at lunch and crazy in the summers. So, what's up with Mi Mexico? Is it under new ownership? MM has been my favorite Mexican restaurant in Bellingham for years. We were in last night and it was like an entirely different place. Took us a long time to get waited on and a long time to get our water and our food. When the food came, it was wrong -- will spare the details, it was just wrong. My husband looked up from taking his first bite of tamale with a "WTF" expression. Each of us had lumps of congealed rice amongst the rice side. Even the salsa that we have always loved was sub par -- not just for MM, but for any place. I would say Mi Mexico has the best Mexican food in the county, and I've been to them all. I had one horrendous experience when there was no chicken in my dish. The waiter instead of taking the food back in the kitchen and adding the chicken, comes out with it on a cutting board and plops it in-kind of gross. This particular waiter who is a blond haired guy, has given me such horrendous service every time I've had him, I just flat out refuse him as my waiter.And quite frankly, I stopped going there because of this waiter. I've had great service from every other waiter there, and I do like the food,but, fair warning if you get the blonde waiter guy. We met my BIL/ SIL and Nephew here for dinner after checking into our hotel/motel. Since we were a party of 7, I called and made a reservation for 7pm since it was a Friday of a holiday weekend and we were driving up from Seattle. We arrived and were seated at a table in a large room close to a wall, bathrooms and kitchen access. Not the best ambiance here (needs a face-lift) but the rest made up for it. We all ordered something different. Chips and salsa were decent and the food came out faster than I have had food come out in a long time.
