We were in Newport for the weekend and decided to detour to Providence on our way back home to eat at this place. We found street parking close to the restaurant and that worked well for us. We had about a 25 minute wait before we were seated as we expected. There were tons of people waiting for a table but they have a good system going and we got our table by the promised time. You are first provided complimentary chips with 3 warm dips (black beans and mild and spicy salsa) - they were really good. For appetizers we shared a garnacha and a chicharron and cheese pupusa. Portions were large and they were very tasty. We considered getting one main course to share but since we don't live close by decided to go for 2. This allowed us to have a lot of leftovers - enough for another dinner at home. One entree was aire, mar y tierra - delicious fried fish filet, well seasoned and grilled steak and chicken breast. That came with salad, rice, beans and a side of tortillas. We also had the caldo de marisco (seafood soup) and although not mentioned on the menu, our server mentioned that we could order a medium or large size. That came with a side order of rice. Fantastic soup! Restaurant is very lively and the noise level is high with groups enjoying their meals and having conversations. They have several televisions that were playing soccer games in the background as well as music playing in the background. A very energetic vibe. Amazing every time!! Food - The food is always fresh & delicious. Upon arrival you are greeted with complimentary chips, salsa & beans. So yummy! I ordered a pupusa with pork to start it comes with cabbage and red sauce they are so good! For entrees we ordered 2 steak tacos that were filled with so much steak, we ordered chicken nachos and it was a great size 2 kids shared them, lastly we ordered parrillada mi Guatemala which is a platter with filers chicken, steak, pork, sausage white rice beans & salad it was big enough for 2 adults to share and have left overs! Having been to Guatemala many times I love their cuisine, especially the black bean purée. I have had more than my fair share of black bean and no place perfected like in Guatemala. Saying that my friend took me here I was pleasantly surprised. We had an array of dishes, including, the pupusa and the breakfast platter and every single dish was excellent and very well-made. The best of it is that the black beans that came with the breakfast platter that the excellent beans I had in Guatemala. I have lots of people from all races dining on this excellent food Prices were very good There is only street parking. If I'm back in the area, I would love to come back here. Recently we had dinner at Mi Guatemala again....the Churrasquito is still my favorite dish....it comes with rice, black beans, salad and tortillas (I asked for ripe plantains instead). The dish was really tasty, unfortunately, the ripe plantains were not ripe nor sweet...what a let down. They do offer complementary chips and salsa to start, the spicy one is really spicy, so be careful if you can not handle spice...Scoville scale warning.....LOL... The Churrasquito was $16.99, still a good deal for all you get....some friends got the Camarones Empanizados and the Mojarra frita and both loved their seafood dishes... Merary was our server and she was sweet, efficient and very pleasant. Small private lot to park, but lots of street parking in front of the restaurant. read more

Don't even think about it to hard, this place is worth trying ! Food/Drink: First of all a place that has complimentary chips and salsa is a place for me, and they give spicy and mild salsa! Delicious! The food is to die for specially the churasco which btw they offer a mini size aswell. It comes with a soup, salad to start ! Then they bring the entree which came with the meat, rice, roll taco , beans, and a side of tortillas. Like let's be forreal now all that included for one entree like how can you go wrong ? My friend said his fish meal that also came with the sides was delicious. The drinks were delicious ! The margaritas were amazing ! I got a little buzz with one and decided to get another, i jokely told our waiter "strong" and the second round he brought us they did just that STRONG! And I loved it because most places will not even do that for you. I definitely recommend the margaritas and also there slushee lemonade is one of my favorites and it's the same size as the margs ! Location: There parking lot is pretty small, but there is plenty of street parking so no need to worry ! The place itself has traditional Guatemalan decor , and has plenty of tables. It's casual , but also nice for a first casual date Service: 10/10 our server was amazing, he was extremely attentive and I wish I remembered his name for him to get credit, but honestly he's the best server there ! 10/10 for everything! Service was great and atmosphere was very relaxing. We were greeted immediately and soon after tortilla chips were brought out for the table. We ordered two plates, el paisano and el granjero and some drinks. Both dishes were delicious perfect and had all the right flavors. The plantains were perfectttt because it wasn't too soggy, to burnt, or too sweet either. (Yes, I'm super picky about plantains lol). The plates were huge, but the food is addicting that you can't help eat another bite. For drinks we ordered Jicama, Tamarindo, and Horchata. Hands down best horchata drink I ever had. I enjoy this place every time they have a friendly staff, mainly Spanish speaking (best to know some spanish), their helpuful with any menu questions. Delicious authentic Guatemalan food with large portions, good service, but be aware going there for brunch on the weekend they can get pretty packed and service can be very slow orders taken within 10-15min, 40min-1hr for food to arrive. This was a delightful spot to check out with friends. Without having been to Guatemala, I got the feeling from the atmosphere in the restaurant that this is probably as authentic as you can get in Rhode Island. I ordered a few small plates (or what I thought would be small, given the prices) and ended up with two full meals worth of food, rather than a small meal built of small plates. Mangonada w/tamarind straw is the real reason I come here. Soooo good! My sister tried the strawberry frozen drink and even my picky 5yr old loved it. Bf had the strawberry coronita and that was bomb too. We Love the complimentary tortilla chips w/2 salsas as well - 1 spicy, 1 not. The Tostadas both ck & steak are good! fried ck plate is good on flavor but kind of dry. Bf had Steak grilled w/sides of rice and salad, he said steak wasn't too dry, gave him 2 thin flanks. Portion sizes are fair here for the price. Garlic shrimp tho, soooo good on flavor!!! Oh and the ceviche! Love!!! I also like the Jukebox you can put money in and choose a song digitally. For starters, they bring out crispy chips with 2 tomato based salsas. One is spicier then the other. The chips have a delicious fresh crunch. I ordered an agua fresca de marañon, first time trying this so I didn't know what to expect. I'm not a fan of really sweet drinks, but this was amazing. I also ordered a pupusa de chicharron only to realize that it was big enough for a meal but I ordered it as an appetizer. The food is freshly made and it does not lack flavor. As a meal I ordered the ranchero breakfast, which consists of 2 eggs, with black beans, sweet plantain, cheese and cream. If you want chicken or steak there's an up charge. I ordered the steak just to try it. Again....amazing. The steak was cooked to perfection, I ordered my eggs over easy and they were cooked to order. The meal also comes accompanied by 3 hand made thick tortillas. The service was great. My server was very attentive and nice about giving me tips on the menu. The environment was busy. I did go right at 12pm for lunch but I didn't have to wait for a table. It's a little darker than normal but very homely. read more

A good place for casual Guatemalan food in a bustling atmosphere. I tried the Churarasquito and Chuchitos, both of which were very flavorful. I especially liked the char on the steak of the Churarasquito. The corn dough for the Chuchitos was smooth with a slightly smoky taste. They also give you complimentary tortilla chips with mild and hot salsa that I gobbled down before the (unexpectedly!) large mains came around. Got the next day's lunch taken care of. read more

Where I'm mesmerized by literally every single dish being served around me because it all looks, smells, and presumably tastes freaking amazing. The kind of place that I don't mind waiting to be seated, or served (eat delicious Nachos while you wait), where I just don't have a care in the world because I'm at Mi Guatemala and life is good. I am always up for authentic food - this place seems legit. I had no clue it existed until a friend suggested it for dinner on a week night. We décor is cute; we were seated promptly and offered chips and salsa. If I go to a Guatemalan restaurant, I want to see Guatemalans eating there - and I did, and got all excited. It signals that the food is good and authentic! Our first waitress did not speak English. Despite my best efforts in high school, I can only ask for the library and the bathroom in Spanish sooo, the first waitress called over another one and we ordered - no big deal, wicked smooth transition. Our second waitress was great, nice, quick - within no time we were sipping on margaritas. My friend ordered Churrasco and I ordered the Fish - oh man, both were so good. I would recommend the Churrasco because it's a little less messy. The salad that came with it was meh. Margarita was okay, I stopped after the first one. The prices are a bit higher than I expected, but the food was good so it is what it is. I would recommend this place to my friends, and I did already to some people at work. Mi Guatemala Restaurant - Piece of nail found in food - Latin American Near Me - Providence, Rhode Island

Providence has some surprising breadth and depth in its variety of cuisine options, and Mi Guatemala is certainly a good example of this. Its unassuming location belies its fun ambiance -- a little kitschy, yes, but it has a fun look and style, sort of like a ranch, and totally unironic. The service is very sweet, and even though they don't speak much English, they are patient, attentive, and helpful. I ordered the carne adobada and a side of platanos. Before my food came out, we were given a platter of house-made tortilla chips with two sauces that were unexpectedly different. What I thought was salsa turned out to be something more like warm marinara sauce, and it was accompanied by a dark chili paste in oil (which the waitress warned was "very spicy" but which I found only mildly so). These two sauces worked nicely in concert. I also liked that they put a wheel of lime on my glass of water instead of the typical lemon. My carne adobada was pretty good -- well-done, as previous reviews have said, but also nicely seasoned, flavorful, and pretty tender, if a little dry. The rice and salad accompanying it were nothing special, but the plantains were terrific -- just the right ripeness, and perfectly sweet, charred, and yielding. We also got tortillas to accompany our entrees, and a small pot of pickled jalapenos that I enjoyed spooning over my rice. The bill for three people came out to around $15 each with tip, which I thought was pretty reasonable given how overstuffed and content I felt as I was leaving. Though there are some other Central/South American restaurants I like a little bit more in this area (El Rancho Grande, Los Andes, El Taconazo), Mi Guatemala is a good find, too, with a strong menu and pleasant service. read more

My first time eating Guatemalan food left a great impression. Mi Guatemala is a fabulous restaurant tucked away on Atwells Ave., but once you find it, get excited, because it's delicious. The chips and salsa were very good, especially since two types of salsa were offered. Both were relatively smooth and thin, and the spicy salsa was thankfully very spicy! I got a beef dish with a side salad and some rice. The rice wasn't anything incredible, but the salad was fine, and the beef was thin and very flavorful. It was also under $10! That was exciting to me. Service is friendly and attentive as well. I would definitely recommend Mi Guatemala. read more
