A very literal hole in the wall delight! Go to the back of the convenience store and ring the doorbell for service. I got 3 tacos (one chicken, one al pastor, and one barbacoa) to go and they were excellent. The green sauce is wicked spicy but an excellent addition. The grocery store was missing some essentials (fresh guava). Rather surprised by how sparsely stocked it was given the photos and rave reviews. The restaurant was not open for dinner last week, which was honestly fine. I ventured over recently during lunchtime hoping to try their tacos. Someone working in the kitchen told me that the restaurant is closed every Tuesday. Having no evidence to the contrary, I meekly accepted their claim to be closed, although I had my doubts (if the restaurant were closed, why was anyone available to answer the kitchen buzzer?). I asked if there were some bags/wrappers for me to at least grab a concha; they said there were none, and that the conchas were not for sale (despite being on display and plentiful). Several employees muttered apologies to me as I left the store with nothing. Giving the establishment the benefit of the doubt, but the experience made me feel unfairly denied service. The place could invest in some signs explaining its restaurant hours, and perhaps it should update its hours on this platform. 2 stars out of deference to the many 5 star reviews, but I did not think the place was special. best tacos in rhode island and I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL (figuratively ofc). i am from california and absolutely live up the stereotypes of being picky about tacos. and i have tried all these spots in rhode island that locals swear up and down by. but nothingggg compared to this spot. i came to buy guava paste and tortillas, and discovered that they have a literal hole in the wall food shop. the servers are the sweetest. there's two cute little tables to sit on and they bring the food out and check on you and bring you extra sauces for no charge and the agua frescas are delightful. i got carne asada tacos the first time and inhaled them before i took a pic. most recently got birria tacos and cried tears of joy. they take card if you check out at the cash register but bring cash to make it easier for them if you can!!! read more

The same food in a restaurant setting at higher prices would merit a four star review. The torta was probably the best anywhere on the east coast that I've tried so far. O...M...G!!! Most legit Latino grocery and food stand I've been to since moving to RI almost one year ago. After seeing the food pics on Yelp, I just had to try it out. Hubby and I ended up going up to Providence from Newport; even though it took almost an hour to get there, the trip was worth it! It was everything I remember about Latino grocery stores when I was growing up and picked up a few Mexican goodies that I haven't seen elsewhere in RI so far. But let's talk about the food... They served all kinds of Mexican dishes such as tacos, tortas, and a green pozole that's typical from the Mexican state of Guerrero (it's just south of Mexico City). I ended up trying the pozole and a couple of carne asada tacos...YUM! I've had pozole many times before but this was first time trying the Guerrero-style green version; and while it doesn't pack as much heat as the red one, it was still flavorful and enjoyed every spoonful. The asada tacos were decent but the homemade spicy green salsa that was on the table made them 100 times better. I've read previous reviews about the al pastor tacos so that's on my to-try list for next time. I'm bummed this place (or that neighborhood for that matter) isn't closer to me, but gives me an excuse to venture out to Providence more often. read more

What a treasure this market place is! Everything you can ask for in Latino groceries. But our most wonderful discovery was the small restaurant/ take out tucked away in the back of the store. The food is fresh and flavors so good. We literally could not stop eating, despite being full. It was that good. There is limited seating - only 2 tables. But you can definitely order to go. When they say fresh "authentic" Mexican, this certainly fits the description.....located in the back of a corner market store, this spot certainly does contain some fresh Mexican treats. I went "safe" and just had Tacos but there were other things posted on the menu. It will help if you speak Spanish or go with someone that does but if your adventurous this is certainly worth a taste! Great store. I went looking for ingredients to make tamales. They have soooo many of the dried chilis I needed! The man working there, not sure is he's the owner, was so helpful as well. The place was somewhat busy when I went, but the service he gave while running around to help others and keep the store stocked was great. The produce was really good and fresh. Got some of the best avocados there that were perfect and lasted at home for awhile, they were big beautiful ones like I'm used to in California. And, I found. Papaya- like good papaya not some of the meh ones I've seen at stores. I like that they have a meat and cheese section as part of the store too! I bought some pre-marinated flank steak (has been hard as heck to find it out here) to make some delicious carne asada. I also bought fresh chorizo, and fresh queso Oaxaca. I drove 50min to come here and I'll do it again to stock up on my Mexican food staples. It has been tricky to find a good Mexican grocery store that has everything like the ones back in California. Now when you see a place with 5 stars average on Yelp, and that on many reviews described as authentic. This is something I needed to check. What should you do when you're at a Mexican grocery store and notice a discrete window with a bell and a menu board nearby? You do the only sane thing you can do, which is you ring that bell and wait for the cook to come out so you can order what will likely be better tacos than you can get at any standard eat-in Mexican restaurant. For some reason I've found that if there is food service tucked away in the back of a Mexican grocery, the tacos will inevitably be cheap and decent and this place is no exception ($2/taco). The tacos I got were so full the fillings were dropping out when trying to pick them up (a good problem to have) and they were really tasty. What a happy accident I came upon this place and caught the taco sign out of the corner of my eye. Always room for more good local options for non-gringo tacos. If you like quality Authentic Tacos, you need to stop by. Everything is made from scratch, when you order. My favorites are the chicken tacos, with a little hot sauce. I've tried the burritos, and some of their breads and pastry. When you eat Mexican, you need to drink Mexican with it. Orange Jarritos are a Mexican soda, and Orange is my favorite flavor. This has to be one of the most hole-in-the-wall restaurants I've ever seen. The "restaurant" (if you want to call it that) is located in the back of a grocery store. There is a large door in the back with two tables, which each have two chairs. You have to ring the doorbell to get the cook's attention and out pops a middle aged woman who directs your attention to the menu on the wall and asks in a heavy Spanish accent, "What would you like to order?" Quickly, I made up my mind and ordered the only thing I could definitely pronounce: A chicken quesadilla. Seven minutes later, the lady reappears with food in hand, holds out her palm and goes "cash only." I think I only paid $4 for what was a rather large quesadilla. I went to the counter and purchased a horchata (a cinnamon-tasting almondy beverage) and we were off to our picnic. Upon eating the quesadilla, I immediately regretted not ordering another one to save for later. My god! It was creamy, warm, melty and just all-around yum! My girlfriend and her family (who are Mexican) used to visit this place regularly when they lived in southeast MA, and after I moved to Providence, I have continued the practice. They have the all the Hispanic groceries that we've needed, and the staff is helpful and welcoming. For whatever reason, I had not tried the attached restaurant until recently, and I must admit I was missing out. The tacos were packed and full of flavor - the pastor especially stood out for me with them being the favorite of that preparation I've ever tried (including compared to pastor tacos I've had in LA, NY, and TX). I visited La Poblanita looking for pan de muerto and I find a lot of food that I didn't see here in my 6 years living in MA. Candy,chips,food,meats and mexican street food!! The place is inside on the right and they have all the menu outside and prices are very good!! $1.50 per taco and the salsas are amazing!! The person that take care of us was Sonia and her friend (Sorry I didn't ask her name) Very friendly ladies :) The menu have tacos,quesadillas,pozole,barbacoa,chorizo,tortas and so many nice things! I will back to try pozole but tacos are really good! The store have cecina and I have to back to get some, the only "bad" thing is the soda I bought there, I think it was either old or outdated, the taste was really strange. Wow, the tacos have the most authentic flavor in the US. Even though I speak very little Spanish, and the ladies who work in the kitchen do not speak much english, whatever comes out their kitchen has multiple layers of flavors. I will try to come back and visit their shop one more time. read more
