We had 2 orders of steak tacos, an order of calamari, and I ordered the chicken mole. The steak tacos come with 4. We asked for some spicy hot sauce and they brought us some house made stuff. Hot. Fantastic flavor. The chicken mole was a thin cutlet of chicken breast. I was a bit bummed because I usually get it with bone in thighs or legs. Buuut the cutlet was super tender. The molé sauce was amazing. Best molé I've had yet. Had a bit of a kick to it The calamari app was in the top 5% of all the calamari apps we've ever tried. Will definitely get them again if I'm here. I liked the interior decorations and this place had ample private parking.

Chips were stale like they were out all day of cinco de mayo. My BF orders steak tacos as his entree. I order the Cochinita Pibil. "Slow cooked pork in achiote. Served with rice, beans and tortillas". We finally get that 30 mins later. His tacos were subpar to say the most. Quote "I wouldn't get tacos here again". My dish was the BLANDEST meal I've ever had in my life. It tasted like nothing. I was visibly upset when the waitress finally walked by 15 mins later and told her I couldn't eat it. She asked if I wanted something else so I told her I'd just have the steak tacos because I was starving at this point. She then asked if I wanted a box for the entree I originally ordered and I said no because it didn't taste good at all and neither of us would eat it. She began to walk away and I politely asked if she would still charge me for the cochinita pibil and she said yes so I told her I wouldn't want anything else and to just give us the check once my bf was done with his meal. She didn't pay attention to me the rest of the time we were there. She did end up charging us for that bland plate. Pretty sad. I regret not asking to talk to someone because I guarantee no one in that kitchen would have enjoyed it either, as they were all Hispanic from what I could tell. I ordered the Burrito Fajita, and it was exactly what I was hoping for. It was generously portioned, served hot, and had plenty of grilled chicken, peppers, and onions. The rice and beans on the side rounded everything out nicely. Nothing about the meal disappointed me. If I'm being fair, restaurants like El Tapatio have a lot of competition. There are plenty of Mexican restaurants around Rhode Island serving very similar menus, and the differences often come down to execution more than originality. That's not a knock on this place. It's simply the reality of the genre. The food here was solid, well prepared, and satisfying, even if there wasn't one particular dish that made me think, "I've never had anything like this before." Where El Tapatio really stood out was the service. Everyone was genuinely friendly without hovering over the table, our food came out quickly, and they made us feel welcome from the moment we walked in. The restaurant was also spotless, which is something I always notice. Would I come back? Absolutely. Maybe it won't reinvent Mexican food, but it doesn't need to.
