Had a taco craving and my favorite taco shop was closed, so I decided to stop in at the Hartford Ave Cali taco location. I ordered the two taco combo and opted for asada and carnitas. The meal also came with a small salad, beans, and Mexican rice. This location has plenty of off street parking, there are a few spots in front of the entrance, and then plenty more in a lot on the side, near The Avenue Bar. Service is friendly and it only took a few minutes for me to receive my order. I found the facos to be just ok - the double tortilla was good, and they were nicely filled, but the meat wasn't particularly flavorful and didn't really taste great. They did provide limes, which I love and the beans and rice were good. This is an ok choice if you don't have time to go into Olneyville, Dyer Ave, Central Falls, Pawtucket, or other areas with great tacos. read more

The food here is amazing!! The kids and I have been back multiple times when we are in the area. We did sit inside the first time we went there, but the seating area is pretty small. We found that most people ordered food for pick up, so we have done that a couple times as well. The people are nice. I love California Taco. I had never been to this location in Johnston but it was very nice. The people are always friendly and it is a nice clean place to go to. They have a limited menu which is fine with me. Their tacos are inexpensive and yet fresh and delicious. They have hard tacos and soft tacos and salads and chicken wings, so a varied menu. I have never had a bad meal at a California Taco and I was happy to see that there was one in Johnston. The food is fresh and good and way better than "Tex Mex" fast food like Chipolte, Moe's, etc. Set up like every other California Taco (chain) , this location is neat and clean. What I don't like is the parking - very tight and limited (try backing out!!!) in the front or have to park in the back. However, the food is just as good. From the reviews, I wanted to really enjoy this place. I struggled to order take out over the phone because the woman who took my order couldn't understand me. When I finally was able to order, I picked up the food with a seamless transaction. She was very friendly in person so it made up for the confusion earlier on the phone. I ordered the chorizo burrito. I was disappointed because it tasted more like ground beef than anything. There was barely any salsa, sour cream or beans. I appreciate the plentiful amounts of meat and rice, I just wish there was more of a balance with the other ingredients. I ordered a side of chips and they didn't taste homemade. The churros, however, were delicious. They were cinnamon churros, sprinkled with powdered sugar and a chocolate dip sauce on the side. My mom ordered chicken tacos and she loved them. This is definitely one of my favorite spots for tacos for multiple reasons! I'll start with the one thing that really is disappointing is the parking situation, its like they don't want you to go there. But besides location, I love this place. My favorite thing to get is the hard tacos, which is crazy because I have never liked hard tacos but theirs is so wonderful and definitely fried in house. What makes it even better? On Wednesdays, my boyfriend and I like to go for the fiesta pack -- which is 7 hard tacos for $5.99 and one more dish to share. there's normally still food left and we eat for less than $20. The only bad experience I have had in terms of food was the chicken. I ordered a chicken burrito as our second dish and the chicken was just plain bland making the whole burrito disappointing. Was looking for local delivery and wasn't feeling up for pizza. Luckily California Taco is nearby and willing to deliver! 2 adults and 2 kids were hungry so we ordered a few different things. My sister got a burrito combo and said it was delicious. I ordered the quesadilla combo for the kids. They shared the quesadilla and both ate the whole thing, which is big cause they were scared of the peppers in it at first. Normally they find sauces "too spicy" but they were eating the chips & salsa and asked for more! One of them ate the hard taco too. I ordered the enchilada combo because I was craving some enchiladas. California Taco satisfied my craving! I only ate about half of my meal and was SO FULL. Everything was delicious. Whenever I go to this part of Rhode Island I HAVE to stop at this spot and get food. Having moved to New England from California I NEED tacos and Jarrito's. They've got really good Al Pastor, they're very quick with service and if you have any questions they'll always answer you. This Mexican food chain is pretty darn good. When I'm in the mood for some taco goodness this has been my spot especially since they have locations pretty much across RI. My favorite is the small soft tacos that's pretty much all I ever get. The marinated pork, chicken and steak are my usuals. The prices are very affordable as well! The chili's that you can get with it are awesome! I They are both very different however the green one is my favorite but I enjoy mixing the both of them together! **Carne asada food poison**Went to The johnston location for the first time after being a loyal customer of the Plainfield ave one in cranston. My wife and I sat in to dine around 4pm. First off. We waited at the table for almost 10 minutes before they asked us what we wanted to drink. Then I had walked up to the counter to ask if we were getting the usual complimentary house chips and salsa. The little tubby guy behind the counter was extremely rude and gave me a short and loud "NO" while not even looking at me. I stood there and stared at him waiting for a reason why and until I asked him he said "we don't do that here, at this location we charge so I can add it to your bill if you like" That should have been our que to leave but we were starving and both ordered the Carne Asada steak for $13 The wait time for that was about 10 minutes. Pretty fast for a steak.... Whatever you do don't get the carne asada steak. The meat was grade D cuts with tonsssss of fat! My wife only ate half of her steak and it made her sick for a week!!! Instant bubble guts for her the whole following week and a Fever everyday for 7 days and counting. I'm never going there or recommending that location to anyone. Beware the steak carne asada was undercooked. I wonder how long they had that nasty piece of meat sittingin the kitchen before they got rid of it by serving us. I had a terrible experience here. They mixed my ground beef into my chicken taco. The issue is I don't eat red meat. When I tried to speak with the server she was abrasive and unreceptive to the fact that the meal looked like she put everything in a box shook it up and gave it to me. Great great nachos! I'd say some of the best I've had in a while. Chicken was extremely flavorful, the chips we thick and crunchy. Just overall a fun little atmosphere. However, when I attempted to order what I got the first two times -- a burrito with chorizo, rice, and french fries -- I was advised by the gentlemen who answered the phone that this wasn't an option. When I asked him when that changed, he then stated that it's not something the chefs make, ever. A bit disgruntled with the situation, I then asked why, as the customer, I could not order food to my liking, only to have the same information already stated to me reiterated for the 3rd time. The roughly 3 minute interaction ended with me telling the employee this would make for a really bad review, to which he replied condescendingly, "Go ahead." I used to live in California and eating at California Taco literally brought tears to my eyes. The food is not only delicious and amazingly fresh, it is exactly what you will find should you ever be lucky enough to travel to San Diego. The steak nacho fries are carne asada fries, the California burrito is what you'd be handed if you pulled up to a small taco shop in San Diego and the hot sauce... omg the hot sauce. It is authentic and flavorful and actually tastes like the magical concoction you get in tiny little cups on the West Coast. We could easily have spent tons of money here -- not because it's expensive, it's *very* reasonably priced -- but because we wanted to try one of everything.
