After morning basketball, I told them to try this place as I believe they make one of the best tortas. Food (4.5 stars) One actually preferred the Cubana torta. That's the one with the egg, chorizo, ham and hot dogs. It's more of a breakfast sandwich. I'm ok with it, but my preference is the.... Milanesa torta is my hands down favorite. I love the seasoning of the breaded meat. I believe it's pork but could be beef. I think there is a hint of cumin, but whatever the spice is it's great. Just like all of their tortas, they pile on the standard fixings of Mexican cheese, fresh avocado, tomatoes, and jalapeños. Their bread is lightly toasted and buttered. It's a massive sandwich! Service/Ambiance (4 stars) You order at the cashier and each order comes with a drink. We were able to choose between a canned soda or their agua frescas. Of course we want the full on Mexican experience and I got the strawberry pineapple Fresca. The lady was generous enough to allow for less ice which means a lot more drink. My biggest problem when coming here is not being able to order and take home everything I want to eat, because if I did, you'd have to roll me out of the store. The staff are incredibly friendly and from the crack of dawn, at 6am they are open and ready to help. It's a small bakery with only a few tables and seats. I was on the hunt for an authentic chocoflan for my birthday and stumbled across Mexico Bakery. When you enter, you will see a large assortment of sweet bread ranging from conchas to cookies and anything in between. I got myself a piece of chocoflan and I will say it was as good as it gets. The chocolate cake part of it was moist and rich while the flan was creamy and not overly sweet. I also saw they had a food selection and got myself a Torta Cubana. The torta was HUGE! Sweet treat options are colorful, authentic, readily displayed and even artistic. I noticed some new items on display but it was difficult to really know their complete offerings as signage was off. Many years ago we enjoyed the Cubana, Ham or Salchicha Tortas and the wonderful full size Chocoflan. All a hit within my circle. This time we had a coffee, bolillo and a Torta de Jamon, expected the Torta to be cold per the handwritten sign but it came out toasty, hearty and did NOT disappoint. I think hubby was not clear when he ordered it. Each bite of the Torta was muy delicioso. Came here on a Wednesday night and there was no line. We ordered on the kiosk and got the milenesa sandwich and the empanada con crema. The wait time was a bit long as we had to wait 20 minutes for both items even though the empanada con crema should have been ready immediately since it came from the pastry case. The milenesa sandwich was pretty big and was more than enough for 2 people to share. However, the meat was a bit dry and was overcooked as it was hard to bite into. The toppings were also limited as there was only cheese and onions; no lettuce, sour cream, or guac included. The empanada con crema was pretty good as it wasn't too sweet and the cream filling wasn't too light. However, I wish there was a bit more filling in it as I only ate like 4 bites of the empanada before the filling ran out. read more

I've known about three locations around San Jose, and this location has been by far the most popular, yet, most convenient from my house. Though the plaza is small, it is bustling with people coming in and out of the different stores, and Mexico Bakery happens to be one of those panaderías where you just can't get enough. They have a wide array of selections, from pan, to aquas frescos, to atole and champurrado (in the winter), to much more. However, the one season that I enjoy the most is when they make the Rosca de Reyes for Día de Reyes (also known as "Day of the Kings"). Fun fact: did you know that every single rosca they make is ACTUALLY from scratch? Makes for a reason why they're so popular, especially when it's on a holiday. In addition, their arroz con leche is one of the BEST in the region -- probably better than the ones they sell at the supermercados in Eastside. Infused with raisins and bits of cinnamon that you can still taste, it melts RIGHT in with the milk and it's so delicious that you simply can't get enough of it. The people who work at this location are VERY nice and very helpful -- and they create a sense of community for newcomers and regular customers. This has become not only my partner's favorite panadería to come to when he comes to San Jose, but it's also become my favorite panadería as well when I want more cheaper, affordable, yet sweet options. A lot of people say that the atmosphere at Mexico Bakery is not really in its best condition -- but in my opinion, they do a fine job of keeping everything clean in front of the store and at the counter as well. read more
