Alhough the Ethiopian cuisine at Mesob originated in a country thousands and thousands of miles from where I grew up, the food has such an earthy, homemade feel that I dare call it "comfort food". The casual nature of eating with your hands breaks down any boundaries between you and your fellow diners. Everything at Mesob is just comfortable. I love the energy at this restaurant. The waitstaff is helpful, friendly, and very willing to help you figure out what to order. The sight of a large plate of injera (the crepe-like bread) coming toward a table is quite a novelty. Your waiter or waitress will spoon whatever it is you ordered over the injera, and someone is always walking around with extra injera! Mesob also has a very large selection of vegan entrees, samplers, and even desserts. We tried the wheatless, flourless, eggless, and butterless cookies to end our vegetarian sampler meal. I didn't know what to expect when I came here. It was interesting. It was a group of six of us and a baby. They placed us in an awkward place where my friend's head was touching some ledge. No big deal, we moved the table. The food was good. I ordered the Doro Tibs (medium) which was pretty good. I also ordered it with potatoes and lentils. The potatoes were okay but didn't have much flavor. I ended up not touching the lentils. Since it was a large group of us they asked if we wanted it on one large plate. Of course, I said "suuuuuure," but I do not recommend this. First, if there's a food allergy you cross contaminate, which is what we had to get our waiter to understand for our friend with food allergies. Luckily, he was nice about having to scoop up the food he served on the large plate, despite us telling him a few times. Second, your food is placed totally far from you. It makes no sense. I couldn't reach one of my side, so I didn't have it. Fortunately, I have no problem tasting my friends' sides. Third, the starch they place the food on, which is also your utensil, gets really soggy and you can't use it. Fourth, there will be no leftovers with this kind of experience. The only thing I didn't like from all of the food we had (beef: mild and hot; lentils, carrots and peas; collard greens) was the collard greens. It's not fair to say they weren't prepared well, I just don't like them. My friend said they were good, so if you like collard greens, you may like them here. What I was really annoyed with at this establishment was their lack of informing us that there was a "cake cutting" fee for holding our cupcakes. I understand if you're actually providing cake cutting and plates, but we asked for neither, nor were we informed when he took our cupcakes from us. I never understand places with cake cutting fees on cupcakes. you're not doing anything at all. I can understand the fee for actually cutting the cake, but not in this situation. Anyway...since it was our first time, what's better than samplers. We went for the appetizer sampler and meat and vegetarian samplers for our entrees. Everything was served with this gummy, rolled up bread, which was not my favorite, but different and edible. We were told to put the different "thick stews" into the bread and eat with hands. That's right, no utensils. The decor was stunning, the staff was friendly and attentive. The food was different. The flavors were unique, but it worked. I can't put my hands on any distinct flavors, it's just something that you have to try at least once in your life. I am all about trying new things for the first time and this was one of those good experiences. My only disappointed was the chocolate sample. I came here with my family, a party of 7 on a Saturday night. We reserved a table for 7:30. Once we got there, we had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated even though we had a reservation. The menu was pretty confusing as a lot of it wasn't really in english, but nonetheless I was able to figure out what to order. I never had Ethiopian food so I was pretty excited to try it out. I ordered the Vegetable Sampler for 1 which I included portobello mushrooms, cabbage & potatoes, corn, string bean and carrots on top of the bread thats served with. This restaurant doesn't give you silverware as their culture use their hands to eat so I had to eat with my hands. I am definitely not used to do doing that but I had no choice lol. My food was pretty good although I did not like the sponge bread that you pick up the food with. It was just too salty and the texture was funny. The service was pretty good although it was pretty slow as it was a busy Saturday night. I had a great time. You do need to be a little adventurous as there are no utensils and everything is eaten by scooping up piles with injera bread. The injera is fantastic and the latest super food, for whatever that's worth. Three mushroom tibs are out of this world. Just about everything I've tried there has been excellent. For my monthly dinner with friends, we wanted to try something new. One of the girls suggested Ethiopian and after reading the amazing reviews this place had we all agreed. As soon as we arrived, the staff was very friendly. I checked in on yelp and got the free appetizer, we chose the bread in butter. We couldn't describe the texture of the bread but the combo was good and the butter was flavorful and a bit spicy which I liked. We opted for the lamb dinner with chick peas and potato side, the beef shiro with potato and collard greens and the chicken with chick peas and potato. Everything was delicious. The waitress told is how to eat it and encouraged is not to use utensils but if we really needed them she would bring them. I'm glad we did this because it was a fun and delicious experience! We had to scoop up the food with slices of the bread which made me full pretty quickly since I don't normally eat bread but if I could fit more food in my belly, I would have finished all of my dinner! This should be a four or even five star place. I found the food to be delicious and filling. We came with a group of 8 people, so we kind of sampled off of everyone's plate. The meat sampler and vegetarian sampler seemed to be hits. I had the Lega Tibs (lamb) and it was fabulous. Person right next to me had the Shrimp Tibs, and they were cooked perfectly. You do get two vegetable choices with your entree, so that was nice (quantity of sides seemed small, though). My complaints are as follows. They were actually very accommodating for our birthday group reservation, which arrived a bit late. They are a busy place, so we appreciated that. However, the waitress seemed like it was a big inconvenience to be serving us. I understand a large group can be a hassle, but this is your job; customers aren't trouble when they are providing business. I have a feeling that because our gratuity was going to be included, service didn't have to really excel. There did seem to be a lot of large groups there, so I believe they are used to them. It's unfortunate. The "Sambussa" appetizers are grossly over priced. Two small sized pastries for about $7? There should be at least one more; won't be ordering that again. Also, they did charge us a plating fee per person ($2pp x 8 = $16) to bring a birthday cake. A bit annoying since that essentially doubled the price of the cake, but I understand. Mesob was a neat experience for our first time eating Ethiopian food. Experience:We enjoyed the experience of eating with our hands and ripping off the injera and mixing with the different veggies and meats. Food: We thought the food was good but personally not something we would ever crave. If you're into "slap you in the face with flavor and spiciness" ethnic food like us, you may not dig it. But if you're into more of the "mild flavor, lightly spiced but still good" ethnic scene than this is more for you. We asked for spicy on the scale for our food but didn't feel it was even slightly on the spicy scale. But nothing was unappetizing in flavor either! Just mild for us! Mesob, you've absolutely transported me from suburban New Jersey to the wild, exotic landscape of D.C. Yes, that's right, D.C. Someone told me that D.C. has the second largest Ethiopian population next to the country itself. There are some delicious Ethiopian restaurants there, so my injera fix was always taken care of. Since moving further north, I've not found a restaurant of similar quality. I can't say anything about authenticity, never having traveled to the country myself, but Mesob hits all the right notes on what I do know. Namely: The injera was fabulous and the attentive staff made sure our basket was always full, and we found the flavors to be rich and nuanced. Most importantly, I learned something, which is that I actually like mushrooms when they're served just right. We tried the butcha (chickpeas) ingudai tibs (mushrooms) doro aletcha wat (chicken) gomen (collard greens) dinche wat (potatoes), miser wat (lentils) and shiro and kik aletcha (more peas/beans). The mushrooms were by far our favorite. The lentils were also a hit. A helpful hint from friends who've gone here several times: it's a better deal to choose your own meals rather than do the samplers. Also, the portions are a bit small so you'll want to choose several. The injera *is* filling, but you might be disappointed by the entree sizes. read more

We started off with the Ayib Bemitmita, a cheese and chili pepper concoction that hits your mouth with waves of smooth creaminess and heat. For entree, we ordered the Meat sampler. I highly recommend the sampler, especially if it is your first time eating Ethiopian food. The sampler platter offers two beef dishes, a lamb dish, a chicken dish and a choice of any three vegetarian dishes (we choose the chickpeas, the lentils and the pureed peas). By far the best plate was the lamb; the meat was soft, savory and it's marinade complimented it. Our vegetarian selections were delicious too, however the pureed peas were almost too spicy to be palatable. Overall, we were pleased with the sampler. I love Mesob! My husband found this place for us several months ago. I'm a vegetarian and he is not, so sometimes it is difficult for us to find a place to eat that has good veggie and non-veggie food! Usually it's one or the other. I'm so glad he found this gem though! We've been here several times, all very pleasant. The staff is very kind and polite. The only time we had a problem with slow service was because the fire alarm went off in the building as we were waiting! Obviously not their fault. It smells wonderful inside and the food is always delicious. What really inspired me to give them such a rave review happened last weekend. We had just been brushed off at another restaurant (we had told them we would wait outside the door for our table since it was so crowded inside; after 40 minutes we popped our heads in the door only to be told that they "don't call names outside" and they had passed us up). We wandered around for a bit before deciding just to walk over to Mesob. Being a Saturday night, they were PACKED, and when we asked for a table for 4, the waitress said they were completely booked for the night but that she would see what she could do. After a few minutes of talking with her floor manager, they both came over and said they could squeeze us in if we didn't mind being done in an hour. We had somewhere to be anyway so it was perfect! We all ended up having a really nice dinner and the staff was really gracious and accommodating. They could have just brushed us off like the other restaurant - after all, it wasn't like they were hurting for business! But they fit us in anyway and it was a great night. My wife and I love foods from around the world, but, somehow, we never got around to trying Ethiopian cuisine-- until tonight. A friend recommended the place, so off we went, and we had a very satisfying dinner, full of flavors and textures unlike other cuisines we've tried. Perhaps you could place it somewhere between Morrocan, Middle Eastern, and Indian food, but that would only be an approximation. Anyhow, being no experts in Ethiopian food, we can only say that everything we tried was tasty and enjoyable. For those not familiar with Ethiopian restaurants, no silverware is used-- you scoop up the food with an incredibly thin, spongy bread called Injera, and this can be a bit challenging at first. One drawback to all of this is that it's easy to fill up on too much bread, so you needn't order a lot of different dishes, but like food mavens, we did just that. We started with the appetizer sampler (all vegetarian), which was wonderful, and seemed like a meal in itself. Then it was on to two entrees (each is served with two vegetables) and the whole meal is served on a giant, round plate covered in one giant, round Injira, with more Injira on the side for scooping. We asked for the Shrimp Tibbs (don't ask) to be moderately spiced, and the chicken we chose came in a mild, flavorful sauce with one hard boiled egg. The four vegetables on the platter were delicious as well. Service here was perfect, and the staff are happy to explain all that needs explaining. The bill, with drinks, tip, and tax, came to $80 for two. Next time, when we go back, we may order a little less food, if we can resist. read more

We ordered a meat sampler for 6 and a veggie sampler for 2 (which was mroe than enough for the 10 of us) and just told the waiter to choose for us with a few mild options - all were very good! I don't know the names of anything since it was just brought out, and we did not receive a full explanation - but the spicy beef chunks, lentil side, mild ground beef, potatoes with cabbage, greenbeans and carrots were all delicious! We went here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. We got the vegetarian combo for two, as well as a cup of Ethiopian coffee. The food was good, however nothing standout compared to other Ethiopian restaurants we've tried in the NYC area. The service was slow, but helpful when selecting the items for the meal. Injera was good, having that tanginess it's supposed to have without an overwhelming fermented flavor. Very good. Coffee was alright, yet I expected something more intense. The decor and atmosphere was open, decorated nicely (minus the tacky table tent type things), although the place was very loud. This is the first Ethiopian restaurant that Heather has liked. It had a romantic ambience and plenty of seating. It would be a great date place. We got the vegetarian appetizer sampler platter--it was enough for two for a light dinner. It consisted mostly of cold dishes, most vegan, and all very interesting: - The farmer's cheese was tart and fresh, and really good. The chili powder on top is very spicy, but it's easy to scrape off if you don't want it. - Timatim was smoother than taboulleh, and more tangy and flavorful. It was a cross between some kind of gazpacho and some kind of salad. You can't see injera, but you can taste it. - Mushrooms are spicy and very flavorful. This was the one warm appetizer. Tasted very meaty, but it was vegetarian. - Lentils--these were basically just lentils in a lemon vinaigrette. They were refreshing. - Buticha--this was grainier than hummus, almost like a sort of fine cous cous. It was slightly sweet, and I swear it had sesame oil (although it's not listed.) read more

"I'll try Ethiopian but honestly it doesn't sound like my thing. But I'm open to trying it!" My sister was not enthused, but she didn't have any other ideas on where to eat before the show at the Wellmont Theater (only two blocks away). I was super excited, as it was something out of the ordinary and knew it would be good. We brought beer (it's BYOB); once we were sat, they stored the rest of our beer in their fridge. The dining room is open, warmly lit, and a subtle, spicy smell pervades it. We decided to try "A Taste of Mesob" for three. There were four of us, and, while we didn't understand why they couldn't accommodate the portions accordingly, there was more than enough food for all of us. First up was an appetizer of the farmer's cheese with pepper powder--a spicy feta relative that went well with the injera (served cold; other Ethiopian restaurants serve it warm). We also tried the sambusas, both lentil and meat varieties. Similar to Indian samosas or Arabian sambusak, the fillings were good inside the crisp, pan-fried dough wrapper. When the entree platter came out, our server explained what each course was as she dumped it on the injera-lined platter. Mild chicken with hard-boiled egg, spicy chicken with tomato, jalapeno, garlic and onions, mild lamb, spicy simmered beef, spicy shrimp with onions, jalapeno, tomato and herbs were the proteins; split peas with garlic and onions, cabbage and potatoes, and portobello mushrooms were the vegetarian courses. Some were more successful than others--the Tibs preparation complemented the shrimp perfectly. The spicy beef (Tibs Wat) was by far the standout, as was the chicken (Doro Tibs). The food is reminiscent of Indian, but the flavors and heat are much cleaner. Montclair, NJ is a significant trek from Brooklyn, but we definitely plan to go back. read more

They are always smiling as they demonstrate a good knowledge of the menu. The food comes quickly and is very hot. Meat dishes are not greasy, and flavors are quite nice. I'm not sure how I managed to live the first 24 years of my life without Ethiopian food, but I'm certainly thankful for that chapter coming to a close when Mesob entered the picture. I should note it's the only Ethiopian place I've been to, so I cannot exactly offer any comparisons, but can say it serves up some amazing eats! Things I love: 1. Their menu is VERY vegan friendly. Moreover, they offer gluten free injera! 2. Food is delicious with a side of delectable. I always get the vegetarian sampler for 2 (very affordable at $20--a lot of food) whether I'm alone or with a friend (I have a huge appetite). This option allows for 6 choices of different dishes, and I find it quite difficult to narrow it down most of the time! My favorites, however, that I order every time without fail, are the ingudai tibs (spicy mushroom dish), gomen (collard greens), azifa (awesome lentil salad), and my top choice, Ye'Shimbra Assa Wat (chick pea patties). Their dessert is great, too--a few of the options, to include the chocolate sampler and cookies, are vegan and gluten free. At one point, they had delicious almond butter cookies, but I think they were phased out. 3. Service is good--nothing mind-blowing, but satisfactory, no doubt. 4. I love the interior--from the smell of spices to the dimmed lighting and authentic Ethiopian decor--all good! 5. They offer take-out. Things I wish for: 1. Alcohol on the menu. We typically get the samplers so we can try multiple things and the favorite of my 9 year old is the cheese and the beef wat (sp) which is nice and spicy and flavorful. I truly can not say enough about Mesob. The first thing I notice is the welcoming atmosphere and hostess. It always has a aromatic fragrance that I believe is their tea. I usually get their meat sampler because I am able to sample 4 stewed meats: mild beef, spicy beef, another type of beef, chicken and lamb along with my choice of 3 veggies. It's all served on the ethiopian styled bread called injera, which you also use as a utensil to eat with. It's delicious. The food is cooked to order is a BYOB restaurant. The food is always wonderfully flavorful and I appreciate that the veggie dishes are vegan. The Shrimp Tibs are to die for, and on the veggie side I love the Miser Wat (lentils simmered in sauce) and Tikil Gomen (cabbage and potatoes.) Unfortunately, the service is not up to par. The staff is friendly enough, but often there are not enough servers to handle the number of customers. We've repeatedly had very long waits just to order or to receive our bill. The worst experience for us was during one of the monthly Sunday brunches. The sign in the window, all of the flyers on the tables, and even their Facebook page all advertised a $24.95 brunch sampler for 2, which we ordered. However, the bill showed a $25.95 charge. When we brought this to the attention of our server, he first told us it was tax (it was not - tax was separate) and then after several runarounds informed us that it was a mistake but they could not honor the posted price. We dropped the issue since it was not worth making a scene over $1, but the experience left a very bad taste in our mouths after what had been a pleasant meal. This type of bait-and-switch seems unethical regardless of the monetary amount, and it's very disappointing to feel that Mesob values their customers less than an extra $1. Mesob was one of my favorite restaurants in the area, but I will be looking elsewhere next time. Edit: Received a very prompt and gracious response from owner Berekti apologizing for the mistake after I posted this review. Will update the review if we visit again... Mesob really does have great food and hopefully can remedy these unfortunate service lapses. read more
