I visited Mercat for the second time tonight. My first brunch here was mid at best, and I wouldn't have returned had a friend not arranged a dinner here tonight. But I was hopeful that dinner could be a different experience here. Unfortunately the bar and kitchen were beyond slow - our drinks took over 30 minutes to arrive. Food took a hour. I ordered the mussels, which, I'm not sure if it was now the end of the night, but there was zero broth in the bowl and maybe fifteen salty mussels. It felt like they had to scrape the bottom of the pot to make my dish. The two pieces of bread that accompanied the plate were burnt and very bitter. Only the fries were palatable. Our waitress was amazing and the two stars are for her alone. Will not be coming here again. Completely overpriced and underwhelming. read more

Got to check this place out during the holidays and sat in their Polar Bear room. It was overall good but definitely want to try it again outside of the holidays because service was slightly off but understandable giving the busy time of the year. We were promptly seated when we arrived and for the polar bear room it appears they expanded their seating into the lobby of the building beside it. This is important to note, because as I mentioned earlier, extra seating means more people and more stress on the kitchen and this could have been the cause of delays we experienced. I had some escargot to start and their's was decent. Not the best I've had and not the worst so will put them in the middle. For my entree I got the short rib and that was excellent and highly recommend. Now the issues we had were long wait times in between check ins and food coming out. A good example I can provide is that given the delays between check ins we went ahead and ordered a side of fries to come out before our main food to snack on. After 25 minutes our fries never showed but our main food finally did. Luckily they brought the fries with them but would have been nice to have a snack in between. There were also times we had to ask someone else other than our server for items. Again, I do not fault them for this as it is a busy time of year and with extra tables it can be a lot logistically, especially when larger parties are present outside of our 4 top. So I will definitely be back another time to try them again on a non-holiday evening. read more

I was beyond dissapointed and kind of shocked by our experience here. We had a reservation for over a month and had to pay $150 deposit to keep that reservation. Our group of 6 got there at 5:30, 15 mins early for our reservation, prior to the large crowd about to come in for the concert that night. It took 30 minutes to put 5 martinis on the table. Our food did not come out until 7:30 - almost 2 hours after sitting down. Tables around us were served before we were and finished and left before our food came out. Not once did a manager or our server George come check on us or tell us there was an issue. Every meal that we received was cold, but we had no other choice but to eat it due to how long it took and making it to the concert by 8PM. This was the night of the Andrea Borcelli concert and the restaurant was full. Management should have prepared for a busy night. My party was so excited to eat in the Polar Bear room and head to the concert. How does a Michelin star restaurant let this happen and then force us to pay 20% gratuity? I was a server for 10 years and I would never let this type of experience happen to a party paying $100 a person in food and drinks. This was hands down the worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant. Management - you need to really work on your guest service and experience. Such a disappointment. read more

The service is impeccable, offering recommendations, refilling drinks or some occasional small talk it was a pleasant experience. The location is small and they're always packed, however, they manage to handle the flow of people well. The chefs that curated their menus deserve an award. Everything I've tried has been amazing. The pastry basket was so good I had to order some of them to go -- with their pistachio croissants being the highlight for me. The Mercat Burger is an amazing option if you're feeling something a little heavier for brunch. The drinks provide a nice compliment to their food. The coffee is equally great. I've been to Mercat Bistro twice now, and it's a lovely spot for an intimate brunch or dinner with friends or family. The space is cozy and charming. The first time, I sat inside the main dining room for lunch, and it was beautifully decorated with a great atmosphere. This time, we sat outside for dinner in the gazebo, which was really cute as well. The only thing to keep in mind is that when the doors are closed, there isn't a lot of air circulating inside but it was alright. Service was great- Our appetizers arrived quickly, and as soon as we finished, our entrées followed which made for a nice, well-paced dining experience. We shared a bottle of rosé, and I also ordered an espresso martini, which was fantastic -- one of the better ones I've had in Dallas. To start, we shared the ricotta & honey and the French country salad -- both were fresh and delicious. For my main, I had the moules frites, and the fries were crisp and seasoned. I also tried the gnocchi, which had a rich, buttery flavor that was amazing. The vibe was cozy, and the service was top-notch. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. The food, however, was hit or miss. The beef tartar had too much fat trims and lacked flavor, the foie gras's sides were a bit too sweet and the grilled salmon came out undercooked and took long to replace. We met old friends for supper the other day and, gosh, I'd go back tonight. What a great supper! And what nice people - every single person we encountered at Mercat Bistro was gracious, friendly and helpful. Mercat was calm and beautifully decorated. The tables are close together but the vibe is not crowded (while it certainly feels Parisian, it's nowhere near as tight as you'd find there - just a delightful space); the noise level is lively but mellow, owing to the quality of the clientele and the subtle attention of the staff and management to things like kitchen noise, music and just general feel. We were able to have a couple hours of not-in-any-way rushed conversation to catch up; just a delight. The food was fantastic: I don't say this lightly, but this was the best venison I've ever eaten. Drinks were great and delivered with lightning speed by Oscar D., a most gracious gentleman (who later saved my night by finding my oafishly dropped credit card and telephoning me so I could rush back and reclaim it). All four of us loved the food and all four of us expressed a desire to return soon. read more

This fine dining establishment is in Uptown Dallas. Since we had just viewed the Impressionist exhibit at the Dallas Museum of Art, we thought it fitting to complement that experience by dining at this French cafe. We found free street parking nearby, but it looks like parking could be challenging at other times. It opens at 5:00 p.m. for dinner on Saturday evenings. We arrived when they opened their doors, so the place was empty except for the staff on hand. Consequently, we received excellent service. The staff were well dressed, so expect to wear collared shirts. Business casual is a minimum. Ladies, this is a great reason to get dressed up. They also serve lunch during the week and have brunch on the weekends. It's quite popular for brunch apparently, so make a reservation. We didn't have a dinner reservation, but it appears that is something expected of diners, especially if you plan to arrive later in the evening when it gets busy. The hostess did take our name and phone number and put our information in her database. The cafe is cute, stylish, with a dramatic rustic appearance. The dark wood chairs, the fine white linen table clothes, and white rose blooms with candlelight at each table give it an elevated experience. We started with the Ricotta and Honey. This is such a light, refreshing appetizer which is great for sharing. It was served with small pieces of fresh white bread. It's nice to note that you could order several small plates and enjoy them as tapas shared with your party. First the entree, my husband selected the striped sea bass. It had a crispy outer crunch and a perfectly flaky interior texture. The lemon butter sauce with capers was absolutely perfect atop this fish and grilled asparagus. My husband exercised great restraint in not licking the plate, but he was uncouth by scraping his fork along the ceramic surface to scoop up every morsel of the buttery goodness he could gather. Who has the recipe for this brown butter sauce? My husband will gladly pay you for it. I went for the roasted venison which was served medium rare and sliced in half dollar sized medallions. It was accompanied by a cooked red cabbage and spaetzle, a small egg noodle. The meat was tender and tasty. I would definitely recommend it. I shared a bite with my husband, and he was begging for more. We both ordered desserts. You have the option to get a full portion, which we mistakenly did. These were as big as our main course. You can also ask for an individual portion which is apparently much smaller, more of a sample to taste. We ordered the Caramel Hazelnut Crunch which was sort of a chocolate hazelnut ganache. The menu said mousse, but it was quite dense. It had a hardened shell with crispy bits decorating the outside edge. Some fluffy cream was served on the side. I love hazelnut, but I was not overly impressed with this dessert. My husband enjoyed it. He was drawn to it because the name started with "caramel", but I didn't taste or even see any caramel included in this recipe at all. I opted for the bread pudding. It surprised me that such a low-brow dish graced the menu here, but I love it so much, I always get it when I see it on the menu. It was monstrous in size and topped with chocolate ice cream. It satisfied my sweet tooth, but I doubt I would get it again unless I got the smaller portion to share with someone. I'd like to note that they have a full bar and a lot of wines available. We just had water. The waiter regularly visited our table to top off our water glasses. They were small in size, but they were never left empty. Our meal was about $125. I had two oat milk hazelnut lattes and they were delicious, one was cold and one was hot. Others in my party had a pineapple mimosa and a cranberry mimosa...very good! The decor, feel and ambiance was great. My Quiche Lorraine was yumm with an extra large slice of quiche. We also ordered the eggs benedict, avocado toast and french dip. Parking garage is adjacent to the restaurant and is free! Everything was delicious! I'd recommend it all! During the winter they do have a "winter wonderland" exhibit on the other part of the restaurant that I believe requires a different sort of reservation. The winter wonderland experience includes animated bears that move from time to time as well as a plethora of flocked Christmas trees adorned with lights and beautiful ornaments! The pastry basket was decent but wish it would've come warm and fresh. The Green Chili crepes were bad. The filling was basically just scrambled eggs with no flavor and the sauce on top was thick and congealed. The French Dip was ok. The fries were the best part - thin and crispy! Honestly we were looking for a restaurant with good food that was decorated for Christmas and got super excited about the polar bear room. We made reservations and were super confused because there was a polar bear room option as well as a polar bear table option. In order to reserve the polar bear room it was no cost. To reserve the polar bear table it was $50. No explanation of the difference but you figure it has to be great so we went for it. When we got to the restaurant I told the guy the name for the reservation and he tried to seat us at the regular table inside. I had to tell him we reserved the polar bear table. He then walked us into another separate room. It was absolutely gorgeous with flocked Christmas trees and the polar bears were at the front singing and dancing. We got to sit by them. The downfall of the bears, you had to push a button for every single song. Fun for the first few, but annoying to have to continue so it's not awkwardly silent with only our table talking. The $50 was to sit at the table next to the polar bears. We were the only table in there when we got there. Absolutely ridiculous to be charged $50 for that. It took quite some time before our waitress came to our table. She was friendly enough, but definitely got the feeling that she was not a seasoned waitress. We ordered cocktails and every one that we tried, was absolutely delicious. This deserves the one star. We all got our drinks except one person. She waited an hour and had to ask the waitress and the waitress used the "oh, I've been waiting for them to make it." It felt that she just forgot to enter it. We started with escargot. It was the worst escargot I've ever had in my life. Honestly if that was the first time, I would never eat it again. It was oily, bland & gritty. It was not what I was craving, the garlicky, buttery, deliciousness. It was highly disappointing. The Shishito peppers were delightful! The cheese jam (I forget what it was called) appetizer was delicious. French fries were... French fries. But room temperature. My husband got the duck comfit. We had dinner here at the polar bear table and it was fantastic. Such a fun thing to do over the holidays. We ordered rainbow trout, short ribs, and roasted chicken. They were all exceptional. We also had crème brûlée and chocolate crème pots for dessert. We also ordered La Vie en Rogue drinks which were very delicious. The service was really good and quick especially important since we were dining out with our small children. The only down side is they don't serve kids menus for dinner so the kids ate side dishes and bites of our food. But they loved the musical polar bears so they were happy as clams. read more
