Spent a lot of money on sand and pavers for a backyard project. Then added $100 delivery fee on so that we wouldn't have to haul ourselves and could have them end up as close to the project site as possible. Well, Menards sent AN EMAIL saying they would be delivering the supplies in 5 minutes! No phone call to ask where to put the supplies or say they were on the way and no door bell ring once they arrived(i was working from home at the time). They just proceeded to dump 2 stacked pallets full of our heavy supplies right in front of our garage door and left. When we alerted the store to this and that we did not receive a call, the response was less than impressive stating 'my driver always calls when on his way' and apologized for any inconvenience. Basically, management called us a liar. So much for the customer is always right. Zero attempt to make their wrong a right, and a very unprofessional to essentially call their paying customer a liar. It's been a long like/hate experience with this chain of hardware outlets. As a supplier it's great. Or at least very good. But the 11% rebate scam/policy sucks. Some of my customers ask me to make most/all materials purchases at Menards and to give them the purchase receipts. This is fine by me. I typically don't bother with up-charging by inflating prices, and in the instances the customer requests the receipts because they intend to mail in the required papers to receive an 11% rebate, I even often buy any tools I need so it raises their refund money a bit. A few weeks back a client that I saved all this stuff for, figuring she'd appreciate the rebate, surprised me and told me she didn't want the bother. So since it was about $400 I decided receiving about $40 rebate might be worth a stamp. Today the 'rebate check' came in the mail. It wasn't a rebate check, it was a MENARDS ONLY VOUCHER. This is the same as old western or factory town company scrip. Bullshit is what it is. Sure, it's something. But I'd prefer to be receiving what I was made to believe I'd get eventually. I do buy stuff at this store, but mostly only because: A- The client specified it. B- It's only sold at this place. C- Menards was much closer. Perhaps other reasons as well, but in general as a rule I avoid Menards in the same way I avoid Walmart. It feels like if Walmart was to go into the hardware store business, it would be no more complicated than changing the sign and making the employees take a pay cut and wear the company trademark blue and yellow asterisk (which if you remember reading Vonnegut, you should be able to connect the dot to decipher my inference. It took 17 days for a ship-to-store order of simple backing rod to arrive for pick up. Fine, no big deal. I go to pick it up, a drive of about 15 miles for me, and wait for 20 minutes only to find out that somehow the order isn't there, and they have none in stock. Oh, but they have a bunch at the Monona location, another 16 miles further out of my way. No thank you. They should have offered to have it delivered from Monona to my home instead of expecting me to waste more of my time and gas money. Ridiculous. I'd give it more stars except I can never find what I'm looking for and the staff always seem to want to avoid eye contact (except once--that one guy was super nice--he didn't know what the hell we were talking about, but he was super nice). If I could find out what dept the product I was looking at online was in, that'd be a huge help. However, their website fails to illuminate almost as badly as their parking lot lights. The irony of half the store being lit up like Christmas with hanging light fixtures mocking you while you walk in from the nearly pitch-black parking lot isn't lost on me. Do you want copper wire? Check out the electrical section. Oh, unless you wanted something smaller than 12-gauge. Then you'll have to try your luck in hardware. Did they say hardware? Oops--they meant automotive... Because that makes sense. And don't expect a selection: It's 22-gauge or nothin'. Did you want soldering iron tips? Ha. Only if you buy a brand new soldering iron. Because they sell refillable soldering irons, but no refill tips--because heaven forbid you should actually want to use the thing repeatedly. I've used the bathroom here twice now. Both times, I thought I must have just narrowly missed a gut blowout. There's no ventilation and the ladies room smells awful. Save yourself. Last time I went, I bought a stone floor tile. It wasn't marked, and the cashier spent about 10 minutes looking through the garden section of her price book, as I repeatedly told her it was a piece of stone floor tile... From the flooring section. She finally called her manager over because she couldn't find it, and I explained again to the manager that it was from the flooring section, that it was $1.88, and that it was a 6" x 18" piece of natural slate (as I'd stated previously to the cashier who was hell-bent on calling it a garden stone). BAM. There it was in the freaking computer (under "flooring," in case you were wondering). Takeaway: Make sure you've got time and patience. Knowledge of the store helps too. Have never seen such a bunch of disinterested, demoralizing bunch of people. It starts at the front desk with an unfriendly management staff more interested in looking busy than taking time to acknowledge a person seeking their attention. No smile or greeting. They act as if they hate their job and that it is more of a sentence to be there than a job to project a favorable image of caring for the customer. Checkout process can be maddening if one buys something that is stocked in the yard. I made multiple trips, first from service desk to ask where the product is located, then out to yard searching everywhere (yard employees very unhelpful), then to checkout to have a ticket printed, then back to yard gate to checkout, only to be told that when I went through checkout, the item hadn't been paid for because I'd needed a pick-ticket from the service desk, then back to checkout again to pay, then finally back to the gate to leave gets old to say the least! The Madison West Menards where I went yesterday is the poorest-run home supply store I've ever been in. Even the gate check employee said he was transferring to the Menona store because the management is so bad here. I've been a great fan of Menards. But that was until yesterday. The service in this store doesn't even compare to the rattiest, local Mom & Pop hardware in Bum-fucked Egypt! Get a new manager before the present one runs your store into the ground! read more

Too big. I once went here to buy some paint and didn't find my way out till two days later. Good selection but the constant jingle is awful. I don't know how the employees stand it. This Menards (430 Commerce Drive, Madison, WI) is a great home improvement store. The store is very clean and organized. The shelves are always stocked and item are always available. Anything for home improvement you can find at this store. They also have a food section and matresses which is strange for a home improvement store. Excellent location just off beltline highway. Easy to get to. Prices are very reasonable. The bathrooms are very clean and maintained. Bathrooms are designed in a way that they have no entry doors...excellent for health reasons...no handles to touch. Above all, the employees are exceptional. They are helpful, friendly, courteous, helpful, and very knowledgeably...they are great! Great job Menards and staff!!! read more

In my recent move to Madison I noticed how many little daily items I somehow either forgot to move or didn't need at my old apartment. Although you can think my many stores that pump out generic home furnishings I knew I wanted a variety to choose from, and at this location, you'll definitely get variety! This store is huge and I'm sure the staff knows that all too well, but each person I met on my journey to buying light bulbs and felt pads was very kind. Most of the time Menards is a GOOD place to go. I prefer them over the other big box competitors. But when it comes to going through a 3rd party for something I would be careful. We used the Key Me Kiosk for thankfully only 3 keys. After receiving them in the mail, only 1 worked. We contacted the company via email and did receive a refund. I used to regard Menards favorably. When I wanted a saw, they couldn't just ship it to my home & have done with it. Oh, no, it had to go to a store 25 miles away. OK, I understand they want me in their store. I waited many weeks & no email notification of arrival as promised. But they said I couldn't cancel because the order had been processed. OK, I told them, call it whatever you want. It's too late. I'm not taking it. But they couldn't simply credit my card, they held back the rebate amount of $9.90. That couldn't be tracked by name; I had to type in about 40 digits. Issued 5/5/20. So where is the rebate certificate? God forbid they dare publish a phone number. I may get the rebate, or I may not. If I do, I may visit a store & spend just above $9.90. And that'll be the last time Menards gets a penny from me. They've been nothing but a needless irritation. read more

Just fine. I needed a cart for moving boxes, etc. and after doing some browsing on their website I saw this location had what I needed. As with most large home improvement stores, there are about a million or so aisles so if you don't know where to start you may spend fifteen minutes just making circles trying to find what you need. I opted to ask someone stocking what direction I should head toward instead. He wasn't sure, but was kind enough to take me on a walking tour. While he didn't know enough to say "oh, you need aisle xx," he did figure it out by walking around a lot faster than I would have due to his general familiarity with the store. I have much better luck here than at Home Depot. Staff are easier to find, experienced, knowledgeable about locations, because let's be honest, this place is huge. I've been here a million times and I still don't have the whole place mapped out; this can be time consuming. Grocery section is fun; I find great steals when it comes to mints, gum, cereal, condiments, chips, nuts, dried fruit. In this sense, it's similar to Blaine's F&F. Extra large carts are available for XL items. Staff do not make customers empty their carts if items are large. They will also load you car! Trucks and delivery available. read more

I have always like Menards but I am now even more impressed with them. My daughter was preparing for her upcoming move with a garage full of new purchases including 3 brand new ceiling fans. During our recent flash flood her garage was flooded ruining multiple things, including her new fans still in the boxes. She went to Menards, explained what happened, and they said "get them out of your car will exchange them"!!! We go to Menards regularly -- they have everything! The staff is hit or miss, but if you hunt around you can find someone who is helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. We wanted some advice on a custom project and we wandered into the paint section of the store late on a Thursday night and found a patient and knowledgeable clerk that listened to our description, looked at our very basic drawing, and then recommended a specific product for every component AND walked us around the whole store to help us find everything. He also gave us some tips on putting it together. Now that's great service! The prices are competitive and the store is well-organized and clean. Checkout is always very fast, never had to wait more than 5 minutes. Best place to go for big and small projects alike. read more

Two months ago I had Logan in the kitchen cabinet department help me design a kitchen for our vacation home in Kentucky. I selected Medallion Cabinets since I have them in my current home and I am pleased with how they have stood up over 17 years. This is a clean and spacious Menards store. One of my good friends seems to go here multiple times per week, so it must have a decent selection of in-stock items and friendly staff. I had bought our washer and dryer from here and later found out our dryer was faulty. I called LG who refused to help fix the issue. I later called Menards and spoke to the manager. I cannot recall his name but he was AMAZING. He helped us get a new dryer and called me every day to update me of the status of the new dryer. The staff couldn't have been more accommodating and helpful. BEST MENARDS EVER! Would definitely recommend this store to anyone for home improvement needs. We just bought an artificial Christmas tree at the West Madison location. It was inside of a sealed box on the shelf (not a display model.) When we opened the box at home, it became clear that the tree had been used. It was covered in dirt/leaves/glitter, which got all over our floor. (Glitter is a pain to clean up!) And the included tree stand was missing...so we couldn't use it. When we called customer service, all they could say was that a different location had plenty in stock (because the 1 other unit available got sold since we were there.) But yea, that location is an hour away. So we asked if there was something else they could provide besides the simple refund...to compensate for the wasted time, the mess, and the extra effort of going far away to exchange. Ya know, like perhaps 1 strand of garland...which only costs $3.50 right now..? The customer service woman replied, "I can't just give you a random write-off for no reason." So apparently...significant lack of quality control (since that return would have been repackaged at their store) that inconveniences and frustrates paying customers isn't a reason to be compensated. read more

I used to go to menards quite often 10-15 years ago because my dad went. I started going to Home Depot after that because of the pricing and service. Recently I went back to menards to see what they've improved over the years. Basically all they've done is get incompetent workers who don't help you and couldn't help if they tried. They're also selling out and putting anything on the floor that sells. They carry toiletries and groceries now which basically makes them a Walmart with some tools. Their prices don't beat Home Depot or Ace and that mixed with their bad service and terrible store layout makes them the last choice as far as hardware stores go (if you want to call them a hardware store anymore). Go somewhere where they know what they're talking about like HD or Ace. You'll be better off. I expect menards will either become another Walmart or go out of business soon enough. read more
